[Bug 1128428] [NEW] linkhard option disappeared again

2013-02-17 Thread Andreas Kotes
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Version 1.50-PR2_4 removes --linkhard again, while it was (still)
present in 1.50-PR2_3.

While there may be various reasons to remove it there are most likely
plenty of users quite happily using the option as-is, thus willing and
wanting to keep it.

Ubuntu should keep this option.

2013-02-17 Thread Pablo
Try this (it worked for me with ubuntu 12.04 64 bits):
1) using gedit create a text file with the following commands:
  modprobe -r option
  modprobe -r usb_wwan
  modprobe -r usbserial
  modprobe usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1003
2) save it anywhere (I've saved it as /opt/modem.sh)
3) asign execut permission
4) in a terminal type: sudo gedit /etc/rc.local
5) add the following lines at the end of the file
/opt/modem.sh ## or the path and name you choosed for your
file
   exit 0
6) save and exit
7) reboot
8) try your modem

Hi Jason and thanks for your report. You have marked this report as
public, even if it contained some sensible information, such as the
CoreDump (which I have promptly removed) and the ProcCmdline. I'm
marking this bug as private, to avoid further disclosure, however it's
possible that some web archives have copied and stored the contents of
this page.

Please, next time do not mark bugs as public if they are not reviewed by
a bug triager. Some bug reports (especially the ones with CoreDumps) may
contain many sensible information, including email addresses and

[Bug 1128315] Re: I don't Know

2013-02-17 Thread Edward Donovan
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 1128412] [NEW] problems oinfull-screen in Unity

2013-02-17 Thread Tony Houghton
Public bug reported:

When running vdr-sxfe in Unity it has difficulty going full-screen. It
starts off in a window as normal, then I double-click to go full-screen.
It does take over the whole screen but most of it is black with the
video at its original size in the top-left corner.

With "Unredirect fullscreen windows" enabled in compiz I can eventually
get it fullscreen by toggling between FS and windowed several times, but
it deos some weird things in between, such as scaling the video as if
full-screen, but only showing part of it in a rectangle or window at the
original size, and then the window accidentally gets maximized.

I also have to hide Unity's dock/launcher, otherwise it doesn't go quite
full-screen, but leaves a black border on the right the same width as
the dock, scaling down both horizontally and vertically to fit the whole
picture at the correct aspect ratio.

FWIW I'm using VDPAU, which is essential on this system for HDTV.

So the fix was not released in Ubuntu, it was released in libfprint. But
the bug report indicates that it's released in Ubuntu, and not in
libfprint. That's why the bug report is being spammed; it says a fix was
released when it wasn't, and it's leading to confusion.

and doubly for being on our side.

P.S. big ups to Jono as well, for your invaluable work in keeping Canonical
in touch with community viewpoints on this issue.

[Bug 1124282] Re: screen lock by timeout does not affect vm

2013-02-17 Thread Marc Deslauriers
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 49579 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49579

The virtual machine window is grabbing the keyboard and mouse, which
prevents the screensaver process from starting properly. While the
screensaver is stuck waiting to grab the keyboard or mouse, DPMI blanks
the screen. When you get back, by moving the mouse you clear the
keyboard/mouse grab and then the screensaver process grabs them and
starts up. This is a longstanding issue, and there's nothing that can be
done to fix this with the current design of xorg. This is a dupe of bug
49579

[Bug 1126560] Re: /etc/networking/* are executed multiple times

2013-02-17 Thread Sworddragon
> Interfaces are brought up as they show up from the kernel, so they can
indeed be brought up in parallel.

I have tested this and it seems to be false (assuming there is a bug on
booting). I have written a script which helps me debugging this problem
and placed it in /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/ and /etc/network/if-up.d/.
The script delays itself to 5 seconds and logs at which PID it is
currently running. So it is possible to say in which order ifupdown has
called the scripts and if they are running sequentially or parallel.

network_reboot.log contains the information what happens after a system reboot.
In this log if-pre-up.d and if-up.d were called parallelized 3 times.
network_restart contains the information what happens after calling
/etc/init.d/networking restart. In this log if-pre-up.d and if-up.d were called
sequentially 2 times.

Because I'm having only 2 network devices I'm assuming the second
variant is the correct one. It would be a little easier to know for
which network device the scripts were running. But I have already opened
a feature request for this
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ifupdown/+bug/1128403).

[Bug 1090770] Re: file browsing causes memory leaks

2013-02-17 Thread Tigran Gabrielyan
I can confirm this on Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit, Files 3.6.3

After opening and closing nautilus the memory keeps rising.

I modified a script I found online to open and close nautilus, log the
mem, and then graph it using:

#!/bin/bash
rm /tmp/mem.log
for (( c=1; c<=100; c++ ))
do
nautilus
sleep 2
wmctrl -c Home
sleep 1
ps -C nautilus -o pid=,rss= >> /tmp/mem.log
clear
echo "$c/100..."
done
echo "Plotting..."
gnuplot gnuplot.script
echo "Done"

I hope my test isn't invalid.

[Bug 1073433] Re: Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10

2013-02-17 Thread Bernd Schubert
I fail to understand why so many people are insisting this is a kernel
bug. It isn't. What basically happens is that the network-manager
process is not killed by killall5. This process also has an open file
descriptor and therefore the root partitions cannot be mounted read-only
before shutdown, as the kernel reports it is busy. Network-manager will
not be killed due to the ubuntu patch add_sendsigs_omissions.patch,
which was added to NM for a similar reason:

From: Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Subject: Move NM's spawns pid files to /run/sendsigs.omit.d.
Bug-Ubuntu:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/869635

The pidfiles are only used by NM to start and be able to stop the same process,
their actual location doesn't overly matter. In this case, putting them
under /run/sendsigs.omit.d allows shutdown to skip over those as handled by
an upstart job, and in fact they are (although indirectly).

I have no idea what Mathieu actually intended with this patch, but it is
entirely wrong and made everything worse. Instead of refusing to kill NM, it
needs to be killed, which is just the other way around than what the patch is
doing.
The only way to fix this from kernel point of view would be to write a kernel
patch to allow to mount read-only while there are still file descriptors, which
have write access. All those FDs would need to be closed from the kernel side
and propably would cause application crashes.

[Bug 1128403] [NEW] Passing the network device as argument to the scripts

2013-02-17 Thread Sworddragon
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 dev with ifupdown 0.7.5ubuntu2. Because of this
ticket (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ifupdown/+bug/1126560)
I had the idea that it would be useful if ifupdown passes the related
network device as argument to the scripts in /etc/network/*. This would
it make easier to debug problems and the scripts could maybe profit from
the information for which network device they are running.

*** EXPLANATION OF THE BUG ***
When I copy (Ctrl + C, or right click and "Copy") text from somewhere and
after that close the program where it is, the clipboard gets empty.

Steps to reproduce in gedit :
  1. Pick any text field that supports copying, copy some text.
  2. Paste into any other text field.
  3. It works.
  4. Close the source window or program.
  5. Paste now does nothing.

This bug will happen in any application that doesn't comply with the
clipboard specification from FreeDesktop.
  http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/ClipboardManager

There was also previous considerations about improving xserver-xorg
clipboard, which would reduce adaptation work from upstream projects to comply
with the specification.

[Bug 1126002] Re: Ubuntu 12.10 Nvidia (Geforce G210m) Fail

2013-02-17 Thread j b guldmand
Here is a little update on how i disabled intel card and fixed the bug
(wtith x / nvidia-settings) ...

This should be done from a terminal without a gui running so either do it via
1) recovery mode > terminal as root or 2) logout > alt+ctrl+f1
..if a sudo command isnt accepted run it as root with gksu (or gksudo)

1)Changed (downgrade) kernel to supported version (i do it using grub since my
linux-headers-3.7.0.7-generic is not supported by nvidia drivers yet)
2)Remove all existing nvidia drivers // using sudo apt-get purge
3)Disable Intel gfx in bios (on my asus ul30vt its done by changing IDE
CONFIGURATION to "compatible")
4)Install nvidia driver (i chose nvidia-current-updates, but any driver will do)
5)sudo update-alternatives –config gl_conf
6)sudo ldconfig
7)sudo update-initramfs -u
8)Configure your xorg.conf
9)sudo nvidia-xconfig
10)Reboot

And ubuntu will boot up with nvidia gfx running, showing a "NVIDIA
SPLASH SCREEN" just after userlogin!

So Dave Lentz, it could be done without bumblebee, although I must say it was a
bit harder than just reinstalling bumblebee.
The check i mentioned, was something like this:
("I'm not really sure what hardware check you're referring to and why it would
check the laptop vendor.")
//I do this by memory so it may not be 100% correct

enable: nvidia-current-updates
...
INFO: enable nvidia-current-updates

Unloading nvidia-current-updates

Imo it should be an option to disable the intel card totally via a
terminal command, to force the accept of the nvidia-xconfig since
everything works perfect the second the intelcard hardware isnt detected
by the system

:)

X.org fails to start with Segmentation Fault if EXA acceleration is

It works fine with XAA in both 16 and 24 bit modes.

The hardware is Lemote Fuloong2F (Loongson2 little-endian MIPS CPU).
So it is possible the bug can be MIPS-specific.

According to a comment in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9611, SiS driver EXA
support was broken at some point. Is it still not supposed to be
working?

Can't believe this has been reported 2 years ago and there isn't even a

So, this is to confirm: the bug is still there, wild and furious.

[Bug 1066496] Re: fit-pc2 on Ubuntu 10.04 hangs/freezes after high network load

2013-02-17 Thread Martin Gamwell Dawids
In comment 19 I said that this was fixed by an _upgrade_ from 10.04LTS
to 12.04LTS. It was _not_ fixed by an update of 10.04LTS and the bug is
still existing in 10.04LTS.

On https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/ you can read what Invalid means:
* This status should be used when the bug report does not contain adequate
information to determine whether or not it is a bug even if it is resolved for
the reporter
* This should also be used if the reported problem is not a bug at all, but for
example user error
* It should be used conservatively as bugs marked as Invalid no longer show up
in default searches
* Be sure to triple-check a bug before you invalidate it

After reading this, I really don't understand why this bug is a
candidate for being invalid and marking it invalid makes it disappear
from default searches (according to the above) meaning that other users
with the same problem will not be able to find it.

[Bug 1128236] Re: Moving an icon on the launcher implies locking it

2013-02-17 Thread Nekhelesh Ramananthan
I cannot find the bug report, but this is actually an intended feature
and not a bug. The reasoning was that if the user moved the launcher
icon, he most probably wants to lock it for easy access in the future.
Again maybe someone else can add the link to the other bug report I am
referring to.

[Bug 1037055] Re: winbind does not refresh kerberos tickets

2013-02-17 Thread styro
After further testing, I'm certain the updated packages have fixed the
bug.

Leaving two machines running logged in and idle over the weekend, the
unpatched machine lost its credential cache (again) while the patched
one succesfully renewed its TGT all weekend. And it also successfully
got a new one after the renewal limit was reached.

Thanks. It would be great if these updates could make their way into
precise and quantal. I gather raring already has them from upstream.

I have re-installed the nvidia-current driver after trying the open

I can watch video fine as well.

[Bug 1128359] [NEW] with encryption+UEFI, no opportunity to select keymap before entering passphrase

2013-02-17 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

While investigating bug #1128257, I found that when using the 'install
ubuntu' option I'm given no opportunity to set the keymap before the
prompt for my passphrase. This is a combination of:

 - UEFI boots with grub rather than syslinux, so there's no keymap prompt in
the bootloader
 - the keymap question appears to happen too late

It's problematic to prompt for any text before the user has an
opportunity to choose their keymap (and not just their language).

[Bug 1128348] [NEW] Unity starts without panels

2013-02-17 Thread Israel Dahl
Public bug reported:

Unity version 6.12.0daily13.02.08-0ubuntu1
Ubuntu version 13.04 (developmental) 3.8.0-6-generic i686

Ubuntu boots and logs in automatically to the Unity interface, however there
are no panels and no window decorations.
I installed Lubuntu alongside Unity when this bug first occurred. I also
installed xcompmgr to get compositing effects in Lubuntu (because
semi-transparent terminals are very useful!!). So I am not entirely sure if
Unity broke in an update, or because I installed Lxde next to it.
If I Ctrl + Alt + T to open a terminal and run
$ unity --replace ||$ compiz --replace

I can click where the cog in the upper right corner should be to Logout
of Unity and log into Lubuntu where things work fine.

This bug is not present in 12.04.1 on an old slow amd64 machine

[Bug 1085500] Re: GeForce 6200 extremely slow opengl performance

2013-02-17 Thread Richard Bilonick
I use the GeForce 6200 Nvidia card on two Ubuntu computers (12.10 and
11.10). I use the nvidia-current driver. Seems to run fine on both
machines for viewing HDTV. Your output seems to indicate that although
nvidia-current is installed it's not activated.
