[Bug 986973] Re: Facter bug causes puppet to hang

2013-07-28 Thread Robie Basak
In the ten days before applying the -proposed update (1.6.5-1ubuntu1.2),
one of my affected servers had nine failures (I haven't been testing any
others). In the ten days since applying the -proposed update, the same
server has had no failures at all. I haven't made any other changes in
this time.

I still need to verify bug 1170325 by hand since it seems that nobody
else will, and then this SRU can land.

[Bug 1205875] [NEW] apparmor.d profile for usr.sbin.ntpd -- access to samba gencache and capability block_suspend

2013-07-28 Thread J G Miller
Public bug reported:

PRETTY_NAME=Ubuntu quantal (12.10)
VERSION=12.10, Quantal Quetzal

Package: ntp
Priority: optional
Section: net
Installed-Size: 1384
Origin: Ubuntu
Maintainer: Ubuntu Developers ubuntu-devel-disc...@lists.ubuntu.com
Bugs: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug
Architecture: i386
Version: 1:4.2.6.p3+dfsg-1ubuntu5

In the system auth log files and dmesg the following apparmor messages
are seen --

type=1400 audit(1375004313.012:40): apparmor=DENIED operation=open
parent=1 profile=/usr/sbin/ntpd name=/run/samba/gencache.tdb
pid=2540 comm=ntpd requested_mask=wc denied_mask=wc fsuid=0 ouid=0

type=1400 audit(1375004313.016:41): apparmor=DENIED
operation=capable parent=1 profile=/usr/sbin/ntpd pid=2540
comm=ntpd pid=2540 comm=ntpd capability=36  capname=block_suspend

type=1400 audit(1375004322.652:42): apparmor=DENIED
operation=capable parent=1 profile=/usr/sbin/ntpd pid=2540
comm=ntpd pid=2540 comm=ntpd capability=36  capname=block_suspend

Does ntpd really need WRITE privileges on /run/samba/gencache.tdb ? Should
not READ be sufficient?

Also why does ntpd need block_suspend capability?

At a minimum read access to the gencache should be enabled for ntp in
its profile, and probably read+write in the samba profile which is also
missing for usr.sbin.smbd in the samba 2:3.6.6-3ubuntu5 package.

ok. just verified as fixed inside saucy daily image on azure.

I'm not really sure what to think about that. we basically added 18 seconds to
boot in order to publish the hostname :-(.
I wonder if there is any other way to do this.

Ugh. Bouncing the interface seems ripe for problems, although that
should be mitigated by the fact that services won't be up. I will pursue
talking to MS about seeing if there is a better way to do this.

[Bug 1205769] [NEW] Keyboard shortcut dialog hangs when backspacing

2013-07-28 Thread srihari sriraman
Public bug reported:

This bug was reported to Gimp first

But I was asked to report it here because it could be distro specific.

Procedure to reproduce:

- Open the keyboard shortcuts dialog
- Type in something 3 characters long
- backspace all the way

It takes a very long time, close to 30 seconds, to backspace till the last
character and type again.

Some system information:

[Bug 1205713] Re: unable to type Greek characters to the dash

2013-07-28 Thread Filippos Kolyvas
Ok, i checked some more things:
My locale settings is el_GR.UTF-8. I dont have a problem with the translation
visibility, Unity and the Dash are translated in Greek and everything appears
as it should, in Greek.
I tried to use the OnBoard screen keyboard to input some greek characters, but
summoning the Dash seems to close the OnBoard application (is that a feature or
a bug?), so i could not test this.
I also tried to type some ASCII-extended characters (eg the ϕ character)
using the keyboard, but that was also not possible.
On the other side, copying some text containing greek characters pasteing it
to the Dash search field works. Characters appear as they normally should, and
search also works (eg. if i copy a filename with greek characters and paste it
to the Dash, the Dash finds it).
Should i add those additional information to the original description?

Works for me too :). Still getting some weird errors for input, but
that's another bug ^_^.

@sheridan: There's a PPA here that has the old fglrx drivers... be sure
to heed his warning about Unity though as I did have a bit of issues
getting unity running on my laptop after installing it:

[Bug 792947] Re: The application cannot be started. A general error occurred while accessing your central configuration.

2013-07-28 Thread KingPommes
I had the same problem with my LibreOffice 4 version.

The solution was to reassign the ownership of the directory .config.

kingpommes@Karlsruhe:~$ sudo chown -hR kingpommes .config

My guess is that my userID changed after I reinstalled my ubuntu some
time ago. So although I used the same user name kingpommes in the new
installation, the userID in the probably changed.

Anyway, the command I mentioned above solved the access problem of
LibreOffice.

[Bug 1048805] Re: xfrun4 launches very slowly

2013-07-28 Thread Snild
It happened again.

The last note in my previous comment was wrong; there _is_ an appfinder
instance running:
$ ps -Tg 4030
  PID SPID TTY TIME CMD
 4030 4030 ?00:00:00 xfce4-appfinder
 4030 4031 ?00:00:00 gdbus
 4030 4032 ?00:00:00 xfce4-appfinder

Like before, DBus has another PID (4029) for the owner of
org.xfce.Appfinder, which is probably the case because of
daemonization.

Attached to it with gdb.

(gdb) info threads
  Id Target Id Frame
  3Thread 0x7faf4897d700 (LWP 4031) gdbus 0x7faf5c8c83cd in poll ()
   from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
  2Thread 0x7faf43fff700 (LWP 4032) xfce4-appfinder 0x7faf5cbb182c in
__lll_lock_wait () from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0
* 1Thread 0x7faf5f0189c0 (LWP 4030) xfce4-appfinder 0x7faf5cbb182c in
__lll_lock_wait () from /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0

Two normal threads, and one gdbus thread. The two first threads are
waiting on a lock (or a condition?). The gdbus thread, which is
currently polling for an event, would have to be the one to awaken at
least one of these threads. That's reasonable -- no reason to do stuff
until an event comes in.

I set a breakpoint on the next instruction in poll (after the syscall
returns). It appears it doesn't recieve any events; starting another
appfinder instance doesn't cause any breaks in the gdb-attached process.
Hm. Looks like I may have to learn some DBus. :)

Installed d-feet, tried to look at the org.xfce.Appfinder bus. It shows
nothing for a while, then pops up an error message saying
org.xfce.Appfinder : Timeout was reached. I guess that rules out any
problem in the client code (well, maybe it could be made more robust
by trying to check for this condition first, but it shouldn't be
needed).

At this point, I wasn't sure what to do next, so I figured I'd kill the
running appfinder daemon and see what happens.

Well, the next start was fine. It daemonized successfully, too. And all
following starts worked fine as well. So at least the problem isn't
persistent in the dbus-daemon. It could still be a dbus problem, of
course, but it seems unlikely. So, what causes the appfinder service to
stop responding? I still have no idea.

It would be extremely convenient to prepare Fedora USB disks on Ubuntu

Both tools are Python and GPL. I am sure people can learn a lot from a
process of merging them.

[Bug 1205791] [NEW] Dell Vostro V131: special keys not working

2013-07-28 Thread Whoopie
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I own a Dell Vostro V131. This model has 3 special hotkeys (quick launch keys,
see http://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/_migrated/pics/v131tastatur_01.jpg).
The keys are:
1. Windows mobility center (this hotkey generates Mod+X)
2. Dell support center
3. Dell instant launch manager

The Dell support center key generates keycode 0xEE, but misses release
event. I got it working with an udev keyboard force release quirk, see
attached patch.

The Dell instant launch manager key doesn't generate anything, neither
through dell-wmi nor i8042. It's the rightmost button in the right upper
corner of the keyboard.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Incomplete

[Bug 1172852] Re: USB keyboard and mouse don't work

2013-07-28 Thread Ger Luijten
I also confirm the solution given by Nikolai. Installing the
linux-image-extra-3.8.0.26-generic pachage solved the USB port problem.
Hopefully my update proces description may help in further debugging.
Laptop: IBM Thinkpad T42 with Kubuntu 12.04. Distribution upgrade through Muon
package manager to 12.10. No problem.
Distribution upgrade to 13.04 failed because I had to install the Fake-PAE
patch because this old laptop has a Pentium-M processor.
After installing 13.04 the touchpad and keyboard worked but the USB-ports didn'
t so the USB-mouse and USB-drives did not work.
After installing the suggested linux-image-extra package and a reboot the
USB-ports work fine again.

Whoopie: please can you attach a copy of 'lspnp'.

** Description changed:

- Hi,
+ Bug filed, following conversation on IRC at:

- I own a Dell Vostro V131. This model has 3 special hotkeys (quick launch
keys, see
http://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/_migrated/pics/v131tastatur_01.jpg).
- The keys are:
- 1. Windows mobility center (this hotkey generates Mod+X)
- 2. Dell support center

[Bug 1205791] Re: Dell Vostro V131: special keys not working

2013-07-28 Thread Paul Sladen
Page 12 of:

http://odm.ubuntu.com/uhs/2011/Enabling%20Hotkey%20Features%20on%20Ubuntu.pdf

gives this as the Dell WMI GUID:

  9DBB5994-A997-11DA-B012-B622A1EF5492 dell_wmi

Whoopie: are you seeing unhandled WMI event at the same time as the
key is pressed?

If this is not obviously the case it worth poking Seth Forshee
(Canonical) and Rezwanul Kabir (Dell) to find out if a knock-code or
something else is required.

[Bug 1205810] [NEW] cups printing an offset

2013-07-28 Thread Francis Greaves
Public bug reported:

I am using an up to date Gentoo Lynux system, but got here using the
link from www.cups.org to report Bugs in Linux.

I have discovered what I think is a bug in net-print/cups-1.6.2-r5
All printing has an X offset of -3mm and a Y offset of -20mm
My printer is a Lexmark X543 network printer.
Previewing printing is normal in for instance LibreOffice or a PDF in Evince.
but when printed to the Lexmark printer there is the offset. Same offset when
printing a test page.

I downgraded to version net-print/cups-1.6.3-r2 with the same result.

I then downgraded to version 1.5.3 which uninstalls net-print/cups-
filters-1.0.34-r1 and app-text/qpdf-4.1.0:0/10 and printing is back to
normal.

[Bug 1205816] [NEW] Linux software raid + usb3 storage + heavy disk activity = recipe for disaster in raring?

2013-07-28 Thread Sergio Callegari
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I have a system with a Nec PCI USB 3 adapter (Renesas Technology Corp.
uPD720201 USB 3.0 Host Controller) with a Lindy USB3 disk case for 2
disks attached to it (JMicron Technology Corp. chipset) and two 1TB
disks inside. The Lindy disk case is configured to show the 2 disk
units (in windows it supports fake raid to with proper dip-switch
configuration).

Linux is configured to see the two disks as a software raid 1 unit. LVM
is set up on top of the raid. Ext4 partitions are created in LVM.

Apparently things work just fine. However, if I have heavy disk
activity (e.g. copy a large iso file to the raid storage), there are
very frequent issues. In the worst case the machine freezes (flashing
leds) trashing all the last data written on the raid storage. When the
machine comes up the raid starts resync which is a painful activity. No
visible oops, nothing in syslog. In the best case, the array simply
looses sync.

Even when things work fine, the disks in the array make clunky noise
that does not seem proper.

Also tried with a VIA USB3 controller and with the motherboard
integrated USB2 controllers. With USB2 things are much slowlier, but the
result is invariably the same.

Probably the problem isn't the ethernet, this is a WLAN problem. You
can't run the ethernet and WLAN simultaneously, they are incompatible.

[Bug 1205633] Re: Xorg stalls out the whole system when surfing with firefox

2013-07-28 Thread Mirko Gustony
Hi Dave,

I've just tested. Before I started Firefox Xorg.0.log's last line was [
188.082]. After I experienced the stall the last line was still [
188.082]. So nothing had been added to it. In today's log file there's
also no trace of those errors you've spotted. So they could be
unrelated.

[Bug 1205633] Re: Xorg stalls out the whole system when surfing with firefox

2013-07-28 Thread Mirko Gustony
Hi Dave,

one possible way to trigger this behaviour is to visit the web page

http://urfin.soup.io/post/328152007/Hans-Peter-Uhl-Fordert-zu-jeder-
Gelegenheit

with Firefox 22.0. I guess something on this webpage makes Firefox
trigger the problem.

Opening only the main image on that page

http://0.asset.soup.io/asset/4713/1040_f146_500.png

with Firefox does not cause any problems.

Also I found out that visiting

http://urfin.soup.io/post/328152007/Hans-Peter-Uhl-Fordert-zu-jeder-
Gelegenheit

with 28.0.1500.71 Ubuntu 13.04 (28.0.1500.71-0ubuntu1.13.04.1) shows the
same behaviour plus Chromium after some time shows a He's dead Jim
page. WTF?!

[Bug 1160177] Re: guake starts with abnormal indentation

2013-07-28 Thread Robie Basak
Thanks, uploaded.

As this seems to affect just about every user of guake on Raring, I
think an SRU is justified.

Since the fix is cherry-picked from upstream, we know that Debian will
get the fix eventually. But you could still file a bug in Debian if you
feel it is appropriate.

Since this introduces a new delta in Ubuntu for this package, and we
know that Debian will fix the problem eventually, please keep an eye on
any updates from Debian and request a package sync
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SyncRequestProcess) so that we don't fall
behind future updates. You can speed this up by filing a bug in Debian
;)

[Bug 1205813] Re: ia32-libs can not be set to saucy

The ia32-libs-multiarch package is an i386 transitional package. You
must have the i386 architecture enabled on your system to use it - which
well be the case by default door all recent installs.
