[Bug 1266746] Re: x86_64: Fails to start using EFI firmware

2014-01-11 Thread Dana Goyette
I can confirm this, though in my case, I'm using 3.13-rc5 kernel plus
Trusty's qemu-related packages.

The following command works (though gives no isa-debugcon output):
qemu-system-x86_64 -M pc -m 5120 -boot menu=on -monitor stdio -chardev
stdio,id=seabios -device isa-debugcon,iobase=0x402,chardev=seabios -bios
/usr/share/ovmf/OVMF.fd

The following command hangs:
qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -M pc -m 5120 -boot menu=on -monitor stdio
-chardev stdio,id=seabios -device isa-debugcon,iobase=0x402,chardev=seabios
-bios /usr/share/ovmf/OVMF.fd

[Bug 1268180] [NEW] net join doesn't work by default since switch to 4.x

2014-01-11 Thread Stéphane Graber
Public bug reported:

I just installed a new clean 14.04 system and it looks like the default
samba doesn't work by default for a standard net join:

root@rproxy01:~# net join -U stgraber stgraber.net
Enter stgraber's password:
Failed to open /var/lib/samba/private/secrets.tdb
Failed to join domain: Unable to open secrets database
ADS join did not work, falling back to RPC...
Unable to find a suitable server for domain STGRABER
Unable to find a suitable server for domain STGRABER

This appears to be entirely linked to the first error. Creating the
missing /var/lib/samba/private directory and attempting the join again
succeeds.

The configuration I'm using is quite minimal and simple:
[global]
workgroup = STGRABER
realm = stgraber.net
server string = %h
security = ads
kerberos method = system keytab
load printers = No

I suspect fixing this should be as simple as having /var/lib/samba/private
shipped by samba-common.

Oh and since I couldn't use ubuntu-bug from that system (single stack IPv6 and
Launchpad doesn't support IPv6), here are some package information:
ii  python-samba  2:4.0.13+dfsg-1ubuntu1
amd64Python bindings for Samba
ii  samba-common  2:4.0.13+dfsg-1ubuntu1   all
common files used by both the Samba server and client
ii  samba-common-bin  2:4.0.13+dfsg-1ubuntu1
amd64Samba common files used by both the server and the client
ii  samba-libs:amd64  2:4.0.13+dfsg-1ubuntu1
amd64Samba core libraries

Hitting ^D at the monitor console tells the VM to continue and allows the
system to boot. I don't know why ovmf behaves this way, but it seems to be
the expected behavior; when running the VM under virt-manager, it starts up
without hesitation.

Because of Ubuntu's polititics to replace crucial parts of its Linux

[Bug 1073433] Re: Ext4 corruption associated with shutdown of Ubuntu 12.10

2014-01-11 Thread Øyvind Stegard
In my case it's a dhclient process that likely respawns and prevents
remount to read-only of root fs, due to a lease file opened for writing
under /var/lib/NetworkManager/.. Result is unclean shutdown and recovery
of dirty root file system on next boot.

Attaching lsof output obtained just before call to umount in
/etc/init.d/umountroot.
As far as I can see, the only process having a regular file opened for writing
on the root file system is dhclient:
dhclient  1317 root4w  REG8,5  578 530637
/var/lib/NetworkManager/dhclient-90ac51b1-a118-416f-a126-0ad83a2c7b9c-eth0.lease

Clean Ubuntu 13.10 installation. This has certainly become an annoying
and long lasting bug now.

[Bug 1247873] Re: on startup upper panel is black(lower is ok)only on ubuntu 13.10

2014-01-11 Thread Jeffery Eman
Hi.. anybody working on this bug?

it is kind of annoying bug.. i've been using a workaround..
Ctrl+Alt+F1.. login to my ID.. and run 'DISPLAY=:0 gnome-panel' - if
start the gnome-panel from first terminal it is working fine.

to automate the above step: i tried to put a shell script on startup to
call gnome-panel. But it still show the blank upper pannel.

looks like the gnome-panel can only be called from first terminal.

this happens after i upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10...

[Bug 1268093] [NEW] Sync syslinux 3:4.05+dfsg-6+deb8u1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2014-01-11 Thread Logan Rosen
Public bug reported:

Please sync syslinux 3:4.05+dfsg-6+deb8u1 (main) from Debian unstable
(main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Resynchronise with Debian. Remaining changes:
- Backport from upstream:
  + Handle constructors/destructors via .init_array and .fini_array, as
generated by newer gccs.
- Stop forcing the use of gcc-4.6, since the above backport allows the
  use of gcc-4.7.
The above changes were to fix an FTBFS with the current version of GCC in
Ubuntu, which was GCC 4.7 at the time. Debian's version builds perfectly on a
local amd64 pbuilder with GCC 4.8, the default version in Trusty, so the delta
can be dropped.

Changelog entries since current trusty version
3:4.05+dfsg-6+deb7u3ubuntu1:

syslinux (3:4.05+dfsg-6+deb8u1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Applying patch from Tom Jampen jam...@cryptography.ch to add a
workaround in root device detection of extlinux' postinst for bugs in
df (see #656067 and #656333) in connection with UUIDs.
  * Using findmnt instead of df-parsing in extlinux.postinst to find root
partition, thanks to Marcin Szewczyk debian.bugrep...@wodny.org
(Closes: #670515).
  * Adding patch from upstream to fix build with newer gcc.

[Bug 1169614] Re: /etc/init.d/umountroot: mount: / is busy due to dhclient is not stopped

2014-01-11 Thread Øyvind Stegard

.. and unclean shutdown as a result.

On a clean and up-to-date Ubuntu 13.10 installation. When patch exists
since april of 2013, why is this bug still present ?

[Bug 1262299] Re: [MIR] libopenwsman1

2014-01-11 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed openwsman version 2.3.6-0ubuntu1 as checked into Trusty. This
should not be considered a full security audit, but rather a quick gauge
of maintainability.

The build depended upon libcimcclient0-dev from universe source package
sblim-sfcc; does this package have a MIR already underway?

- It's difficult to figure out what this package does. It bundles a
  webserver, manages plugins, generates XML, generates SWIG bindings, but
  the overall purpose is difficult to discern either from source code
  analysis or from reading documentation.
- Build-depends on cmake, libssl, libpam0g, libxml2, libcurl4-opeenssl,
  libcimcclient0-dev, swig, python-dev (ruby bindings are disabled)
- Uses OpenSSL in the embedded web server; does no certificate validation
- Uses libcurl to load remote resources; does not correctly validate
  hostnames
- Uses an embedded version of shttpd to serve HTTP and HTTPS
- Provides a pam module that can be used for authentication
- shttpd daemonizes correctly
- Simple pre/post inst/rm scripts are automatically generated content
- No initscripts
- No setuid executables
- No Dbus services
- openwsman package provides openwsmand, owsmangencert binaries
- No sudo fragments
- No udev rules
- Test suite, not enabled during build
- No cron jobs
- Build logs are clean but only by accident -- most useful compiler
  warnings are disabled, very few files are compiled with -Wall or
  -Wextra. Many oddities in the code could have been caught by asking the
  compiler for help.

- Subprocesses are spawned, looked careful
- Some memory management is overly complicated, much string manipulation
  code is awkward, some allocations are used without checking.
- Files are written to, many might be under control of remote systems via
  the web server
- Most logging functions were safe, only unsafe debug() is stubbed out
- Environment variable handling looked safe
- No privileged portions of code
- Extensive use of networking, looked safe
- No temp file handling
- No WebKit
- No PolicyKit

The code quality is highly variable. This codebase was cobbled together
out of several different projects and while some portions, particularly
the embedded webserver, look good, much of the code base is rough and
unpolished. There are many odd decisions throughout, and some of them
would have been reported by the compiler's built-in warnings, if only
they were enabled.

Many string handling functions allocate more memory than is necessary.
String duplicates are created and destroyed often. Memory management is
awkward with heap storage being used for objects with only call-chain
lifetimes. This significantly complicated looking for errors because usual
idioms are not observed.

Some memory allocations are used without checking for success. Very
rarely are structures zeroed after allocation -- and the plugin-based
architecture makes it very difficult to determine if there are information
leaks due to incomplete object initialization or structure holes.

Libcurl has a poor design -- to properly verify host names against X.509
certificates, a parameter must be set to 2. Due to this bad design,
libcurl versions greater than 7.28.0 return an error if the value 1 is
passed as a parameter. This library has made this mistake. Due to this
mistake, I suspect no one has executed this code in this package in
Raring, Saucy, or Trusty, otherwise this bug would have been discovered
earlier. In 10.04 LTS, 12.04 LTS, and 12.10, this library simply does
not perform hostname validation as it intended.

Overall, this code feels like it was debugged into existence and works
just well enough to be thrown over the fence to the next team. Much
of the code is complicated and shows a lot of motion but it is far from
clear what a lot of it does. It does not feel like this project has had a
curator to tend to it, and simple quality steps like turning on compiler
warnings are completely lacking, let alone a comprehensive test suite,
valgrind runs, or Coverity scans.

The package has not been modified since 13.04. It is not packaged in
Debian.

As this package currently stands, we cannot include it in main.

However, I understand the importance of CIM to some ecosystems, and
I can understand that this package may be the easiest way to provide
CIM infrastructure. I would be willing to accept this package if the
following issues are addressed:

- ws_xml_make_default_prefix() can overflow buf parameter via sprintf()
- wsmc_create_request() potential buf[20] overflow via WSMAN_ACTION_RENEW
  - Note especially that %f formatting of -DBL_MAX is 317 bytes long
- init_curl_transport() uses the cl-authentication.verify_host value
  directly when setting CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST. wsmc_create() sets
  verify_host=1. curl_easy_setopt() should throw an error return in 13.04,
  13.10, and trusty, because the only legal values in those versions are
  '0' and '2'. (In earlier releases, '1' was a debugging option that led
  to no shortage of bugs.)
- redirect.c

Yes, that is the problem, and I think you are using the libvirt with my
workaround, :-)

Even '-cpu host' isn't needed for previous qemy from openvirtualsystem

[Bug 1243233] Re: Holding Super key doesn't bring up shortcut overlay.

2014-01-11 Thread Bruno Nova
You're right! When the workspaces are disabled, the shortcuts overlay
does appear in my laptop!

But, previously I said that the shortcuts overlay was appearing on an external
monitor (bigger resolution), and I didn't disable workspaces then. I'm pretty
sure the overlay was a lot bigger in the external monitor.
I bet the overlay also displays the shortcuts to manage workspaces when they
are enabled, making it bigger, which would explain why the overlay doesn't
appear in laptops when the workspaces are enabled.
I'll test this in a few days, then I'll add a comment to confirm if my bet was
correct.

BTW, I found this bug report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1245101 reporting
what you said, Fred.

Yes it is still an issue. I tested with the daily live image and the bug
is also in trusty.

@FiNeX: I don't know :-( Dolphin uses KDiskFreeSpaceInfo for getting
this information. I had a short look at the code, but I'm not sure. I
guess David or Sebastian might be able to answer this question off the
bat.

If SMB provides this info, then we also have to make it available as a kioslave
special() command, but that's the 2nd step (which I can do). First step: how
could kio_smb find out the available space on a share? Reassigning to kio_smb.

After some googling I've found the following links:

They talk about [get server info] Get total and free space for server

Could this info be useful in some way?

smbclient shows the free space on remote shares (I just checked in
interactive mode)

It outputs it in a bit strange way, but it's correct:

34175 blocks of size 8388608. 2269 blocks available

8388608 = 8192 * 1024, so each block is 8MB

I have absolutely no idea why it uses 8MB blocks, but that's not the
point :)

Sorry to comment on such an old bug, but this is still not implemented in KDE
4.12. I know this can be done as I've done it myself using libsmbclient. Here
is an example implementation that works just fine:
void auth_fn(const char *server, const char *share,
 char *workgroup, int wgmaxlen, char *username, int unmaxlen,
 char *password, int pwmaxlen)
{
strcpy(username, guest);
}

bool calculateSMBSpace(char *url, unsigned long long spaceTotal, unsigned long
long spaceFree) {
int err = smbc_init(auth_fn,  0);
if (err  0) {
return false;
}

int handle = smbc_opendir(url);
if(handle  0) {
return false;
}

struct statvfs dirStat;
err = smbc_fstatvfs(handle, dirStat);
smbc_closedir(handle);

if (err  0) {
return false;
}

spaceTotal = dirStat.f_bsize * dirStat.f_blocks;
spaceFree = dirStat.f_bsize * dirStat.f_bavail;

return true;
}

I would write the implementation myself, but I don't know my way around
the KDE code too well and I'm not sure if libsmbclient is cross-platform
which might mean that some OSes would be left out.

[Bug 1268113] [NEW] [LENOVO 3626AZ8] suspend/resume failure

2014-01-11 Thread SixedUp
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of 13.10 on new SSD. System previously running 12.10 (on
a HDD) without problem.

Symptoms are that system is now extremely fragile when using suspend/resume to
memory. Symptoms exhibit themselves in two main ways:
(a) System will often (~ more than 1 time in 3) fail to fully resume from
suspend. When the error occurs, the graphical console appears to always hang at
a black screen, at which point text consoles (CTRL-ALT-F1 etc) are no longer
responsive either. Only option at this point is to force a power-off-restart.
Often (about 50% of the time) this first restart also fails to boot cleanly,
and fails to get as far as the greeter screen. However, CTRL-ALT-F1 etc are
active at this point, and the system appears to be up, just NOT the graphical
subsystem. A further reboot from one of the text consoles *usually* (but not
always) brings up the system cleanly.

(b) System will sometimes apparently power off during suspend. Suspend
appears to work correctly, but on returning to the system some time
later, the system will be powered completely off.

In both cases, the use of a docking station appears to exacerbate the
problem (so, suspending in the docking station, then removing the laptop
from the dock, and then resuming *seems* to increase the likelihood of
(a), and suspending off the docking station, plugging back into the dock
*seems* to increase the likelihood of (b)).

I'm on the latest Lenovo BIOS, and all OS fixes/updates are applied.

Hi Guys,

I know this bug has been fixed one year ago, but here is one further point for
the /wishlist/:

== Add documentation of the new features (specify devices by UUID e.g.) to
hdparm manual page
and to the description header text in /etc/hdparm.conf...

[Bug 837196] Re: Cannot change bluetooth name

2014-01-11 Thread Steve White
Hi Mathieu,

In my latest distro, Ubuntu 13.10, there is a field for setting the
Bluetooth Friendly Name in the blueman-adapters panel. I think it
works, at least on the system I'm using now. (However, this isn't a
fresh installation, and I may have performed some work-around last
year.)

But this was very problematic even last year. Something like: you could
set the friendly name in one place, but somehow it didn't *take*, so
that other devices would still see it as ubuntu0.

As always, it's immaterial to the user whose fault it is--and enough
glitches like this drive users to the competition.

Thanks for your time!

[Bug 1268119] [NEW] ICC color profile application lost during login

2014-01-11 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

I assume colord is the correct package to report this bug against, but
to be honest I really don't know!

Symptoms:
I have an ICC color profile which is not being applied at login. Upon logging
in, the system (Unity) appears to use it for a second or so, but then something
happens which results in it being unloaded. This never happened in Ubuntu
13.10.

Workaround:
Go to system settings, color. Note the correct profile is selected (your custom
profile). Choose the default (system) profile (i.e. not your custom profile),
and then again choose the profile that is meant to be used. The correct color
profile will now be used until logout.

[Bug 1268120] [NEW] apt-build generates en error message in update-manager

2014-01-11 Thread Kenneth Wrede
Public bug reported:

This bug might affect or have it's source in another package. I just
putted it where I found the troubble. Feel free to change if you like.
(This might affect unattended-upgrades as well, i don't know.)

I will first tell what I found, and then what I expect instead. Last of
all, a workaround.

PROBLEM
I'm running a fulle updated Saucy 13.10, with critical and recomended repos
enabled. Not backports or proposed.
update-manager version 1:0.194.1

I have lately found out about the apt-build package. When I install that
package it also installs several others. It also, this is crucial, ads a
line in the sources list. But there is no change in
/etc/apt/sources.list. (Suprinsing) So the change is made somewere else
thats affects the sources-manager. The new row is file:/var/cache/apt-
build/repository. I don't know where the actual addition is made, but
it's visible in tha update-manager-GUI.

This new line complicates thing. When I run update-manager it complains
that it could not download all files. If I uncheck that line in the
sources-manager, then the software-updater works as normal again. The
error message looks like this:

W:Failed to fetch
file:/var/cache/apt-build/repository/dists/apt-build/main/binary-i386/Packages
File not found
, E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.
---

WHAT I EXPECT TO HAPPEN
I expect that the software-updater can tell difference of local and remote
files, and only demand download and updated of the later. The local ones can be
used as they are.

WORKAROUND
Keep the row file:/var/cache/apt-build/repository deactivated in sources
manager. Only enable it when you are messing around with apt-build, then
deactivate it again. The own-build packages doesn't seem to be classified as
obolsete/local in synaptic on this account.

[Bug 1268121] [NEW] AMD Radeon HD 8450G flickering screen other display issues

2014-01-11 Thread Wayne
Public bug reported:

screen flickers, especially icons in the laucher bar, or when changing
workspaces.
GUI widgets(menu bars, text fields etc.) often disappear or become orange
blocks.
Corner of a app will sometimes be stretched on a sharp angle to one of the
corners of the monitor.

NOTE: there has been some improvement in this over the last couple
months. When initially installed, hiding the laucher bar would leave a
discoloured block along the left side of the screen, this is no longer
the case.

NOTE 2: Screen shots taken when these problems occur do not show the
aforementioned display issues.
