[Bug 1018015] Re: Regression: the update including linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic breaks suspend on Dell m4300

2014-03-08 Thread selkovjr
The issue came and went multiple times. I was able to avoid it for
several months by running with everything current under funtoo with a
3.10 kernel. When an update broke it again (around Dec 2013), I switched
back to 12.04 in the form of Elementary OS Luna. Everything has been
working fine since then. The machine goes to sleep and wakes up several
times a day.

[Bug 1157914] [NEW] time never catches up to reality after VM sleep

2014-03-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I run Ubuntu in a VM, then sleep the VM for a little while, I
expect time to eventually catch up to reality, because I have Set the
time ... Automatically from the Internet. However, time never does
catch up.

I can trigger a catch up by toggling the datetime indicator to
Manually, wait a little bit, then toggle back to Automatically from
the Internet. I may have to do this a couple of times to fix the time.

This tells me that it's not a problem with the VM environment
specifically, but a problem with coordinating time over the internet.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04
Package: indicator-datetime 12.10.3daily13.03.07-0ubuntu1

[Bug 1157914] Re: time never catches up to reality after VM sleep

2014-03-08 Thread Martin Pitt
This is first and foremost a QEMU or linux bug (not sure which), it
should really update its internal time after suspend. But I suppose ntp
could also listen to resume events (perhaps through pm-utils' /usr/lib
/pm-utils/sleep.d/ scripts); although this should already be covered by
its existing if-up.d script, i. e. as soon as the VM gets back online
after resuming /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate ought to run. It doesn't in
your case?

2014-03-08 Thread pst007x
I was using Nvidia graphics card and the Nouveau display driver, this seemed to
cause the problem.

I moved to a proprietary Nvidia driver, rebooted and suspend now works
fine.

So I would suggest checking what driver you are using and changing to
the proprietary driver available for your system.

Check in: SYSTEM SETTINGS / SOFTWARE UPDATES / ADDITIONAL DRIVERS

Please note that this is a VMware Fusion VM. ntp is not installed, but if you
go to System Settings - Time Date, you will see that Set the time is set
to Automatically from the Internet. Shouldn't this be enough to have time
catch up after resume from VM suspend? If not, and ntp is actually required
(as was the case way back when), then I rather think that the System Setting
is misleading. I can handle installing and running ntp, as I used to do, but
I think this is a regression (hard for me to remember exactly).

So, if ntp is required not installed, what effect does the Time Date dialog
actually have, other than dimming the Time and Date widgets?

[Bug 1289719] [NEW] Wifi Problem HP DV7 After Windows 7 Dual Boot Installation

2014-03-08 Thread Mike Garner
Public bug reported:

Background Info, how the problem came about:

I am writing on behalf of a customer/friend who I've wiped Windows 7 in
yet another ugly mess that I come across often (Windows in general), backed up
user files' and reinstalled with “13.10, Saucy Salamander”. I myself run
Gentoo, but it's not for everybody. I will get straight to the point. He wants
his Locomotive Train Simulation Games to work. I do not like the idea of him
running Windows software under Linux (WINE), and know that can be buggy as well
working half-*** or not at all.

So what I did is, I took a Linux Live DVD (USB actually) and ran
Gparted, resized the only partition (1 Primary, no swap needed with the
amount of ram), and made the free space before the Ext4 Partition for
Linux, and placed an NTFS Partition that would be /dev/sda1. I am doing
everything possible to prevent the Windows installer from doing anything
to wipe out Linux.

I then went to installing Windows 7. Upon reaching the
partitioner, it recognized the newly created NTFS Partition, and I had
it install there. Yes, knowingly, it would wipe out the MBR of Grub2
with it's own BS that I later fixed using some Gentoo skills (refer to
the Gentoo Handbook if interested).

Skip ahead...

Windows 7 and Linux are now both dual booting just fine with Grub2.
However, a problem exists with Wifi working under Linux. I have a couple
of options:

1. Solve the problem myself, reconfigure make menuconfig, patch if necessary,
etc. etc., or
2. Make a bug report, so that when updates come in through Ubuntu Repositories,
the issue is fixed and remains fixed not only for this customer, but all others
that run into the problem and would run into the problem if a bug fix had not
been made.

Problem in More Detail:

Boot Linux to GUI desktop. Automatic connecting to the WPA2 Wireless Network by
Network Manager does not happen. Then go into Network Manager's Settings and
find out

Airplane mode is enabled. It will toggle off. Wireless is toggled off,
and refuses to toggle on.

Temporary workaround that gets around the issue:

Suspend the computer in Linux (did so through the GUI), and wake it from
Suspend. Now everything works and behaves as expected, but the problem
will persist after a reboot.

Troubleshooting:

Check dmesg # // /* Attachment of dmesg output below */
sudo passwd root
su -
mike-HP-Pavilion-dv7-Notebook-PC BugReport # rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: Yes
rfkill unblock wifi # Check with list again, same results
rfkill unblock all# Same as above
rfkill block all
rfkill unblock all# Same results still persist
halt/poweroff/reboot
# Booted back up in no time on this ssd drive, command line again
su -
dmesg dmesg_before
# Suspend work-around mentioned earlier
dmesg dmesg_after
# Examine with the best editor known to existence, SORRY EMACS FANS!
vimdiff dmesg_before dmesg_after # Files are included as attachments

[Bug 571229]

2014-03-08 Thread Petercraigmartin
I'm running Firefox 27.0.1 on Windows 7 with the US-International
keyboard. In full-screen mode, the Menu Bar is permanently hidden
rather than auto-hidden, and it is completely nonfunctional. There is no
way to display or access it in full-screen mode, whether by moving the
pointer to the top of the screen, pressing F10, pressing and releasing
the leftAlt key, or pressing a leftAlt keyboard shortcut (e.g.,
leftAlt+v for the View menu or leftAlt+T for the Tools menu). (The
rightAlt key is used for typing special characters in the US-
International keyboard.) The only way to regain access to the Menu Bar
(and its menus) is to exit full-screen mode.

This is a MAJOR inconvenience for me, for two reasons:

(1) I am using Tab Mix Plus's multi-row Tab Bar option, which eats up
vertical webpage space in regular display mode. Full-screen display mode
is very useful in recovering that space. (NOTE: changing the Tab Bar to
a single row display in Tab Mix Plus does not eliminate the permanently
hidden Menu Bar problem.)

(2) I have placed most of my toolbar buttons on the Menu Bar. (I gather
that that particular customization may be limited or eliminated in
Australis, but I'm planning on restoring it with extensions). I use my
toolbar buttons extremely frequently, and having to toggle back and
forth between full-screen and regular display modes is not a practical
option.

For me, this qualifies as a MAJOR bug.

Would an Ubuntu Developer like me to run something with strace? valgrind
is useful, but I don't believe the issue is memory leakage.

The computer was purchase while this practice was (and still is) in
affect. The computer may have been afflicted at the BIOS level.

[Bug 1289730] [NEW] systemd-udev fails to execute alsactl during start-up if /usr and/or /var are separate volumes

2014-03-08 Thread Dominik Kubla
Public bug reported:

During system startup systemd-udev will print the following error
messages:

[ 15.089778] systemd-udevd[683]: failed to execute '/usr/sbin/alsactl'
'/usr/sbin/alsactl -E HOME=/var/run/alsa restore 0': No such file or directory
[ 15.090130] systemd-udevd[684]: failed to execute '/usr/sbin/alsactl'
'/usr/sbin/alsactl -E HOME=/var/run/alsa restore 1': No such file or directory

alsactl is present:

$ which alsactl
/usr/sbin/alsactl

but on a separate partition:
$ df -h /usr/sbin/alsactl
DateisystemGröße Benutzt Verf. Verw% Eingehängt auf
/dev/mapper/scaleo-usr 12G6,6G 4,1G 62% /usr

$ df -h /var
DateisystemGröße Benutzt Verf. Verw% Eingehängt auf
/dev/mapper/scaleo-var 7,3G2,5G 4,4G 37% /var

This suggests that systemd-udev is called before all local partitions
have been mounted.

[Bug 763823] Re: Add Luxembourgish hunspell

2014-03-08 Thread Michel Weimerskirch
Although I'm still updating the dictionary every two months, the quality has
become rather good, so I would also support including it in a distribution now.
If there is interest in getting this into Ubuntu, I would be interested in
maintaining it myself. So I'd appreciate if you would contact me.

The dictionaries are available here:
https://downloads.spellchecker.lu/source/ (lb_LU.zip, EUPL license) and
there's a .deb repository here (the packages are not signed yet though):
deb http://downloads.spellchecker.lu/packages/Ubuntu/ ./

[Bug 1289739] [NEW] vagrant JujuBox times out

2014-03-08 Thread kklepper
Public bug reported:

As given by https://juju.ubuntu.com/docs/config-vagrant.html:

-

vagrant box add JujuBox http://cloud-
images.ubuntu.com/vagrant/precise/current/precise-server-cloudimg-amd64
-juju-vagrant-disk1.box

-

Result:

[default] Booting VM...
[default] Waiting for machine to boot. This may take a few minutes...
DL is deprecated, please use Fiddle
Timed out while waiting for the machine to boot. This means that
Vagrant was unable to communicate with the guest machine within
the configured (config.vm.boot_timeout value) time period. This can
mean a number of things.

If you're using a custom box, make sure that networking is properly
working and you're able to connect to the machine. It is a common
problem that networking isn't setup properly in these boxes.
Verify that authentication configurations are also setup properly,
as well.

If the box appears to be booting properly, you may want to increase
the timeout (config.vm.boot_timeout) value.

-

config.vm.boot_timeout is set by default to 300. Changing to 600 didn't
change anything, as expected, using the 32-bit-version either.

No way to use the box, although it is running:

-

D:\vagrant\jujuvagrant ssh
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host

D:\vagrant\jujuvagrant status
Current machine states:

default running (virtualbox)

The VM is running. To stop this VM, you can run `vagrant halt` to
shut it down forcefully, or you can run `vagrant suspend` to simply
suspend the virtual machine. In either case, to restart it again,
simply run `vagrant up`.

[Bug 1276379] Re: fglrx-installer 2:13.101-0ubuntu0.0.1 fails with some legacy devices (Radeon HD 2000 3000 4000)

2014-03-08 Thread Eduard Hasenleithner
I suffered from the fglrx SRU in 12.04 too. Being forced to fix the
problem I tried the saucy enablement stack
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack). In order for radeon
to work properly, fglrx has to be uninstalled. I had to blacklist the
vesafb driver, otherwise I'd get a GPU lockup during boot.

WARNING: fglrx-8.x is incompatible with the saucy stack! In order to
operate fglrx-8.x after experimenting with the saucy enablement stack,
one has to downgrade back to the precise stack (kernel+X11+mesa).

I was positively surprised by the performance of the open source radeon
driver in saucy. 3D unity performance is on par with the fglrx, while
things which did not work before (e.g. DVI output on docking station)
work now like a charm. I don't do gaming on the laptop, so I can't tell
how well the open source radeon driver performs with 3D in general.

[Bug 1278062] Re: firefox crashes on startup (but apparently layunched properly to enable me to post this)

2014-03-08 Thread Julien Lavergne
More investigations, and it seems that it's the interaction between upstart
session and lxsession.
For the short term, the work around is to :
- sudo cp /usr/share/xsession/Lubuntu.desktop /usr/share/xsession/test.desktop
- Open /usr/share/xsession/test.desktop and change Name=Lubuntu by Name=test
- Log out and log in with test session name

[Bug 1289746] [NEW] BCM4313 not working with some wireless AP

2014-03-08 Thread LennartP
Public bug reported:

1) lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Trusty Tahr (development branch)
Release:14.04

N.B: The same problem existed in 13.10 with this computer about a month
ago.

2) From software center: broadcom-sta-source 6.30.223.141-1.

3) What i expected to happen: Once the driver connects to my AP at home,
i expect it to forward IP-packets between the AP and my computer.

4) What happened instead: Almost nothing. There is a valid ARP entry for
the AP in the ARP cache, but there are no replies from ping.

The AP is a DLINK DIR-645. I've got two Android devices of different
versions using the AP w/o problems, so the AP is not broken. The
driver works with an AP from Huawei. This computer has been able to use
the AP w/o problems running 12.04 until abount six months ago, when no
longer connect to it.

brand-new laptop, with either of the two batteries supplied with the
machine. The batteries are holding charge, and an LED on the machine
correctly indicates charging/charged (orange/green). On right-click -
Power Information - Battery, zeros are shown for Energy full design,
Energy full, Energy empty and Voltage. The numerical entries at
/sys/class/power_supply/BAT0 are also all 0.

Information from ubuntu-bug is hopefully attached; I also attach the
output of acpidump.

Adding the boot option acpi_osi=Linux (confirmed as appearing in
/proc/cmdline) has not helped.

[Bug 1279388] Re: [MIR] thermald

2014-03-08 Thread Colin King
Thanks Seth for that very instructive list of issues. I will work on
these as soon as I can next week. BTW, what is the suggested correct
way to daemonize? Any examples I can look at?

Thanks again!
