[Bug 1323758] Re: Mouse stops working when connected usb-storage-device

2014-06-01 Thread Ruben Portier
** Description changed:

  I'm running a guest that has Windows 8 Pro (x64) installed. Every time I
  pass through a usb storage device from the host to the guest, the mouse
  stops working in the vnc client. When I remove the usb-device the mouse
  works again.

  The mouse only stops working when I pass through a usb storage device
  and then make the vlc viewer (client) inactive by clicking on another
  program on the local computer (where I'm running the vnc viewer
  (client)). As long as I keep the vnc viewer active, the mouse works
  without any problems. But as soon as I make the vnc viewer inactive and
  then active again, the mouse will no longer work. I have to reboot the
  guest or remove the usb storage device.

  I can't find any related problems on the internet, so it may be just me?

  I hope someone can help me with this.
+
+ EDIT: I posted the extra/new information in comments. But as I know see
+ it might be wrong and maybe I should've posted them in this bug
+ description container (by editing)? Please tell me if I did it wrong and
+ I will change it. Sorry for this misunderstanding.

file from other directory, it will succeed.

This setup is working under Ubuntu 10.04 lts, but do not work under

[Bug 1325470] [NEW] [systemd] error 5 creating /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/dev/lxc/console

2014-06-01 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

LXC containers fail to start up with systemd. After setting up lxcbr0
manually (bug 1312532) and adjusting the AppArmor profile (bug 1325468)
they fail with:

$ sudo strace -fvvs1024 -o /tmp/t lxc-start -n debci
lxc-start: Device or resource busy - failed to set memory.use_hierarchy to 1;
continuing
lxc-start: Device or resource busy - failed to set memory.use_hierarchy to 1;
continuing
lxc-start: Input/output error - error 5 creating
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/dev/lxc/console
lxc-start: failed to setup the console for 'debci'
lxc-start: failed to setup the container
lxc-start: invalid sequence number 1. expected 2
lxc-start: failed to spawn 'debci'

strace shows:
10421 mkdir(/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/dev/lxc, 0755) = -1 EEXIST (File
exists)
10421 unlink(/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/dev/console) = -1 ENOENT (No such
file or directory)
10421 creat(/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/dev/lxc/console, 0660) = -1 EIO
(Input/output error)

Indeed /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/dev/ does not have a console
(while my /dev does).

There is no relevant error in dmesg:
[ 1238.586524] device vethLLNW81 entered promiscuous mode

[Bug 1214482] Re: Not-grouping dependent packages in Phased Updates changes propability distribution for entire group of dependent packages.

2014-06-01 Thread Marek Wrzosek
Extending this Linux packages example. What if some proprietary device driver
called X? This driver is not from Linux source package, but every update of
Linux will cause the need of rebuilding X's deb packages. Sources are
independent but deb packages of X depends on Linux's deb packages. If you
change RNG's probability distribution from uniform to normal, then probability
distribution will stay normal, but parameters will change (e.g. average).
You can compare this two m-files:
uniform.m:

figure(1)
hist(rand(1,10),100,1)
for i = 2:10
 figure(i)
 hist(max(rand(i,10)),100,1)
endfor

normal.m:

figure(1)
hist(randn(1,10),100,1)
for i = 2:10
 figure(i)
 hist(max(randn(i,10)),100,1)
endfor

If you combine normal distribution with seeding RNG with (source package name,
update version, client-machine-id), then this will keep number of random
variables to low values and combined probability distribution will be closer to
normal.
In this scenario Linux's packages probability distribution will be normal
(because it is independent) and X's will be like for i = 2 from 'normal.m'
file. You can calculate parameters of probability distributions for dependent
groups of deb packages (coming from the same source packages) using lists of
installed packages from users that report bugs.

[Bug 1325321] [NEW] Wifi/Wlan on Acer Aspire keeps switching on / off

2014-06-01 Thread Maximilian Lang
Public bug reported:

Iḿ on an Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830 TG Laptop (64bit), on which i have
Ubuntu 12.04 Precise 64bit installed, and all works fine. Now i
installed Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty (32bit !) as a portable OS on a USB Stick
(LVM,encrypted) with no Problems, but it has this weird problem with
Wifi: The Atheros Wireless Adapter, more precisely the the hard block
option, keeps turning on and off within about 10 seconds. Tried loads of
things concerning acer_wmi, ath9k, software/hardware encryption etc. to
no avail. The Laptop doesnt have any hardware switch, only Fn+F3, which
doesnt do anything (in 12.04 it works correctly). Bluetooth works fine.

rfkill list gives this:

0: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: acer-bluetooth: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
2: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: YES
3: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
 Ten seconds later:
0: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
1: acer-bluetooth: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
2: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: NO
3: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

Another 10 seconds later back to the first output. During the second
phase i can shortly see my wifi router and others, it attempts to
connect but never seems to accomplish before Wifi goes off again...

It doesnt have anything to do with the router as this beheaviour stays
when i remove my wifi from the network-manager.

Now the interesting part: when i reboot into my well working 12.04, i
get the exact same behaviour! Must be some Initialisation of the Wifi
adapter that stays in the hardware on reboot. couldnt find anyone else
via google with this exact issue. Help appreciated!

[Bug 1317125] Re: Xfburn crashes when trying to add files to data composition on Lubuntu 14.04

2014-06-01 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

this bug is also discussed at the german Ubuntu forum
and brought to the attention of the upstream programmer
of xfburn. It appears as if it was depending on particular
installation environment.

We can believe that the author tested this use case before
release. I myself worked with it on non-standard xfce equipment
on Debian 6.
The german bug is with Lubuntu 14.04.
  http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/brasero-3-10-0-schliesst-cd-dvd-nicht-ab/2/
(The thread began about Brasero. But since i do not know
 how to get the attention of Brasero maintainers, i
 proposed to hunt down the mentioned bug in xfburn.)

There is some problem indicated by valgrind on the machine
of the german user:
  ==3172== Invalid read of size 4
  ==3172==at 0x5217370: ??? (in
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgobject-2.0.so.0.4000.0)
  ...
  ==3172==by 0x4B8A7DD: gtk_object_destroy (in
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2400.23)
  ==3172==by 0x12BC9B: ??? (in /usr/bin/xfburn)
  ==3172==by 0x521E728: g_cclosure_marshal_VOID__VOIDv (in
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgobject-2.0.so.0.4000.0)
  ==3172==by 0x521CCCD: ??? (in
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgobject-2.0.so.0.40
  ==3172==  Address 0x150 is not stack'd, malloc'd or (recently) free'd

If Ubuntu could provide an xfburn package with debugging
information, then valgrind could probably tell more.

An apport crash file of a different run indicates a stack
trace without any xfburn function call in it.
So i (as bystanding libburn programmer) suspect that the
memory management gets damaged by the valgrind catch, and
that it stumbles ahead until it finally crashes.

It might still be some way to go after we learn about the
xfburn parameters in the valgrind report.
It is unclear whether xfburn or the desktop libraries are
to blame.

Very helpful would be a valgrind run of xfburn on some other
Ubuntu desktop, in order to see whether similar memory access
errors are detected. (Would help even without debugging-ready
xfburn.)
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

[Bug 1214482] Re: Not-grouping dependent packages in Phased Updates changes propability distribution for entire group of dependent packages.

2014-06-01 Thread Marek Wrzosek
After some consideration - maybe real life scenario will be better. Regard
Linux, Nvidia, ATI and some DVB-T dongle without driver in current kernel.
There will be 6 groups of users:
a) only Linux, (i=1)
b) Linux and Nvidia, (i=2)
c) Linux and ATI, (i=2)
d) Linux and DVB-T dongle, (i=2)
e) Linux, Nvidia and DVB-T dongle, (i=3)
f) Linux, ATI and DVB-T dongle. (i=3)
These are all kernel or kernel modules so they could share the same threshold
value. You can calculate percentage of users for Linux-only using normal
distribution and use it directly for group a), for other groups will be easy to
calculate parameters of their distribution using the i value (number of random
variables) and recalculate pristine threshold for all packages from b) to f)
groups accordingly, then compare it with maximum value of random generated
numbers for Linux, graphics and DVB-T. That way will be possible to determine
percentage of users that installed newer versions of packages and this
percentage can be equal for all groups (from a) to f)). The value of i can be
estimated using list of installed packages for every user reporting bug.
For other software packages it should be similar as for Linux example.

I can be wrong, so correct me if you find any mistake.

[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux

2014-06-01 Thread sudodus
Sorry for the confusion,

*I asked*

 I have a couple of questions about your Sony Vaio with Pentium M:

 What happens when you try to boot a PAE kernel with forcepae? Do you get
 an error message? Black screen?

 Are you sure it is not 'only' a problem with some other hardware, for
 example graphics or wifi? You could try to boot with the boot option
 'text' and switch off the wifi if possible.

*The owner replied*

   Most of my 'nonpae' observations have come inside VirtualBox where I
   noticed the 'pae/nx' checkbox is greyed out and every distro. I try that
   is pae only, informs me that I have a cpu that doesn't support the pae
   option. Trying 'forcepae' using a recent kernel eventually ended with a
   blank black screen.

   I tried to use a Gparted live CD recently and that gave me a similar
   message when it attempted to boot.

   Yesterday I squeezed some unused space out of my HDD using Gparted and
   created an empty new extra linux partition (about 9 GiB) and I'll try a
   'real metal' install of a pae kernel sometime later today.

*I replied*

 You can test that it is not problems with the graphics chip using the
 boot options 'forcepae text' in a 'standard Lubuntu 14.04 LTS installer'.

*And the owner solved the problem*

You were quite correct to keep asking questions.

Using the 'forcepae' parameter I have now successfully installed Lubuntu
14.04 on 'baremetal'.

I'm happy with that as you can imagine. There are many ways that I tried
before that failed but
obviously there is nothing that replaces a 'baremetal' install. My first clue
that it may work was
when I used 'forcepae' to boot from the LiveCD that I made and that worked.

Apologies for causing you extra work and innocently misleading your research.
All's well that
ends well, as the saying goes.

[Bug 1323822] Re: Firefox can not play some WebM videos generated by avconv on Trusty

2014-06-01 Thread Mossroy
After a few tests, I suspect the issue might come from the audio track.

If I encode without the audio track :
avconv -i P5270914.MOV -an P5270914-trusty-no-audio.webm

It gives me the attached file, and it plays fine on Firefox

When comparing both mkvinfo (the ones generated with libav, on Precise and
Trusty), you can notice that the audio track has a different bit depth (32 vs
16).
Maybe the header bit depth could not correspond to the actual bit depth of the
track, or something similar?

audio track

[Bug 1323822] Re: Firefox can not play some WebM videos generated by avconv on Trusty

2014-06-01 Thread Mossroy
And if I remove the video instead of the audio (-vn option instead of -an), it
does not play either and jumps to the end of the stram.
I tried to tweak the libvorbis options on bitrate and quality values, but it
does not seem to make any difference.

I also tried to manually modify the header properties with mkvpropedit,
but it always seems to delete both audio and video tracks in the header,
giving a file considered corrupted by Firefox (but still playable on
Totem, VLC and Chromium... It looks like these players are less
dependent on the mkv header)

[Bug 958520] Re: [Toshiba Satellite LD350-11S] Suspend on lid close works only after one manual suspend

As for me, the bug is still present in 14.04., after BIOS upgrade to the

It is not only the lid close, but also FN keys which magically start

[Bug 1325343] [NEW] Sync libvsqlitepp 0.3.13-3 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2014-06-01 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Public bug reported:

Please sync libvsqlitepp 0.3.13-3 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of Ubuntu changes and why they can be dropped:
  * Bump to Boost 1.54.

The Debian package has changed to versionless dependency on boost
library, so the version number no longer needs to be adjusted for a new
boost release.

New changelog entries since 0.3.12-1ubuntu1:

libvsqlitepp (0.3.13-3) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Dropped obsolete libboost1.53-dev from Build-Depends (Closes:
#749862).

 -- Dmitry Smirnov only...@debian.org  Fri, 30 May 2014 21:57:54 +1000

libvsqlitepp (0.3.13-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Dropped custom build flags -Wl,-O1 to fix FTBFS in mysql-workbench
(Closes: #747795).
  * Build with +all hardening.
  * Added debian/gbp.conf.

 -- Dmitry Smirnov only...@debian.org  Fri, 30 May 2014 04:16:05 +1000

libvsqlitepp (0.3.13-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release [April 2014].
  * Standards to 3.9.5.
  * Build-Depends:
+ graphviz
  * Added lintian-override for no-symbols-control-file.
  * Minor rules clean-up and improvements; better de-duplication.

[Bug 1325309] Re: User can't suspend laptop/control wireless via dbus/systemd-logind if cgroups are disabled in kernel

2014-06-01 Thread Martin Pitt
I'm afraid logind does require cgroups to be available. The init script
reflects that, as without the cgroup mount logind wouldn't work. You
already noticed the failure to suspend etc., but I'm quite surprised
that you get a desktop session at all. I expect that dynamic ACLs to
devices (sound, USB, etc.) are also not working.

So I recommend enabling cgroups in your custom kernels. This should
hardly have any power usage effect?

[Bug 1325348] [NEW] Top xfce panel does not auto-hide once action button is pressed

2014-06-01 Thread MBonne
Public bug reported:

To replicate the bug:

- install xubuntu 14.04 from iso;
- upgrade to latest stable packages as per logs attached;
- set top panel to auto hide;
- add action buttons to the panel, just to the right of the wisker menu;

Expected behaviour, tested on the wisker menu:
- click on the wisker menu, but then, instead of clicking on an icon from the
menu, click anywhere on the desktop: the panel auto hides.

Unexpected behaviour, on the action button:
- click on the action button, but then, instead of clicking on an icon from the
menu, click anywhere on the desktop: the panel does not auto hides and stays
visible as if the panel setting was always visible.

The work around xfce4-panel -r from terminal or as a shortcut works
well.

I have not been able to replicate this behaviour on any other item on
the panel.

[Bug 430224] Re: init: support chroots

2014-06-01 Thread gouri
# Workaround and future

It may be of interest to observe that future releases of Ubuntu (after 14.04)
will no longer use upstart but systemd.
Ref: [Mark Shuttleworth » Blog Archive » Losing
graciously](http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/1316)

In the strict context of this bug report which aims at having traditional
chroot work in an upstart context, this information should be considered a
workaround at best.
In the broader context of making some software future-proof, systemd seems like
the target to study. Systemd provides containers which can be thought of like
chroot done right.

Good news is: it appears one can test systemd with existing Ubuntu
releases (from 13.04 onward, I haven't tested myself):

* [How can I replace upstart with systemd? - Ask
Ubuntu](http://askubuntu.com/questions/420917/how-can-i-replace-upstart-with-systemd)
* [systemd - Ubuntu Wiki](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/systemd)

Thank you for your attention.

[Bug 1325350] [NEW] MP3 extraction, cover editor, library... regressions ?

2014-06-01 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04 upgraded from 13.10

Rhythmbox 3.0.2ubuntu2

The tool cover editor does not show any text.

The library is not automatically updated - have to import manually each
new file or folder;

Eject a CD makes Rhythmbox crash.

And most annoying : Rhythmbox is unable to extract audio CD to mp3
because it never finds the right plugin BUT the gstreamer-bad-
ugly-a.s.o. are installed in my system. Asunder extracts correctly CD to
mp3 for example, as other applications (ffmpeg, avconv, sox...)

I did not have those problems on either ubuntu 12.04 or 13.10.

Possible regressions or do I need to go through a full new 14.04 install
instead of upgrading ?

** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1018367] Re: Unable to remove unattended-upgrades

2014-06-01 Thread goldencut
Stumbled onto this bug just in Lubuntu 14.04. Did a Lubuntu minimal

ISO
(http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/trusty/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/mini.iso)
install on x86 PC and searched two days for the solution. Had to remove
that one file. Is there a massively effective corporate (MS?) sabotage
unit working inseide the core of linux community?

[Bug 371897]

2014-06-01 Thread Susan Cragin
 Please post your test results here, or email me directly if you
prefer.

Andrew, Hello.
I compiled biarch wine using your patch, and I am very pleased with it.
Background.
I use wine to run Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
NatSpeak is a resource hog and works best with Lubuntu and a low-latency
kernel, which I have. But I had installed pulseaudio just to get wine sound
working.
NatSpeak needs to be installed in a 32-bit wine prefix because it is a 32-bit
program with handles to make it run on 64-bit systems.
Test.
You patch installed problem-free.
I tried running NatSpeak with my current wineprefix. It worked and then it
didn't... I'm not sure what the problem was. So I created a new wine prefix and
re-installed NatSpeak.
Success.
Winecfg showed me default and my two sound cards, including my Sennheiser
PC363D headset. I have .asoundconfrc set to call up Card 1, so the default
setting called up my headset. Hooray. Selecting the Sennheiser option in
winecfg did NOT work. Boo.
So then I tested it.
Great sound. Great accuracy.
Checked alsamixer. The settings showed it was being accessed and had set the
volume in the microphone.
Then, I opened a browser and tried a youtube video at the same time as NatSpeak
on wine. Both worked simultaneously.

logout-prompt=false

This works fine except there is no value for suppress-lock-menuitem or
suppress-switch-menuitem or suppress-lock-switch-menuitem, and the
Lock/Switch User menuitem still appears; even though it is non-
functional. Clicking on it blacks out the screen for a second and then
shows the desktop again.
