[Bug 1325847] [NEW] Improvement: initscript enhancement with support for conf.d and configtest on startup

2014-06-03 Thread born2chill
Public bug reported:

The haproxy initscript misses a configtest option, which haproxy natively
supports. It also does not warn the user, if haproxy has been disabled in the
default file, but exits silently.
Also, it has become a de-facto standard for daemons to include conf.d
configuration file support.
I attached a patch for the current init script, which remedies all these issues
and should be forward/backward compatible to haproxy 1.3/1.4/1.5.

** Affects: haproxy (Ubuntu)

[Bug 715141] Re: Default NTP servers do not have AAAA records

2014-06-03 Thread dino99
I'm using 'systemd' to boot with Utopic. Recently ntpdate has failed. So
googling around i have found that:
- ntpdate is the default ubuntu-minimal choice, even if deprecated. Should use
ntp instead.
- the servers used (ntp.ubuntu.com) has issue with ipv6
- records default servers can be easily changed :

only 2.pool.ntp.org (and 2.debian.pool.ntp.org, etc) returns records
currently.
http://www.pool.ntp.org/en/

So on my system, i have updated /etc/ntp.conf with the
2.debian.pool.ntp.org

Also, I didn't check if the init.d script is provided by packaging or
comes directly from upstream. If it comes directly from upstream, then
sending the patch upstream directly would be best.

[Bug 1325847] Re: Improvement: initscript enhancement with support for conf.d and configtest on startup

2014-06-03 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

haproxy in Ubuntu is currently identical to the Debian haproxy package
from which it is derived, so it seems likely to me that Debian will
benefit from this patch, too. I would also like to avoid the additional
maintenance burden of forking Debian's packaging if possible, and this
is better community etiquette anyway.

Please could you verify if this patch is suitable for Debian also, and
if so, forward it to the Debian bug tracker? Then Ubuntu will
automatically sync the patch after it is uploaded to Debian.

2014-06-03 Thread Robert C Jennings
Regarding the missing build dependency, libdumbnet-dev, in main. This
package was promoted from universe to main for Trusty, the MIR is in bug
#1220950. The only dependency for libdumbnet-dev or libdumbnet1 is
libc6 which is already in main.

Hi,
From ubuntu's perspective, this is fix-released (as it is fixed in Trusty).
From cloud-init's perspective, this is fixed in trunk (I think).

I'm going to close this as fix-released. If either of those statements are
not true, feel free to re-open the bug.
Thanks for taking the time to file the bug and sorry it has taken so long to
get around to triaging it.

[Bug 1325943] Re: open vm tools cannot be installed

2014-06-03 Thread Robert C Jennings
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1083719 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1083719

Marking this as a duplicate of bug #1083719. open-vm-tools with an HWE
kernel (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack) is broken.
You are running with the HWE kernel from Raring.

As an alternative to 1083719 if you can upgrade to a Saucy or Trusty HWE
kernel you could try the new open-vm-tools-lts-trusty packages which are
being introduced in bug #1275656. That package is a backport from
Trusty but it requires a Saucy HWE kernel or newer; your Raring (3.8)
kernel is insufficient.

2014-06-03 Thread Robert C Jennings
open-vm-dkms is unable to build drivers on Precise currently for both
the stock 3.2 kernel and the newer HWE
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack) kernels.

For those needing an HWE kernel in your Precise installation, the Saucy
or newer HWE kernels are supported by a new open-vm-tools-lts-trusty
package being introduced in bug #1275656.

Older kernels, which are still supported, will still require a fix in
open-vm-dkms as the newer packages mentioned above require a v3.9 or
newer kernel.

[Bug 1257435] Re: Chef does not run with all install types

2014-06-03 Thread Scott Moser
It does seem that the bug you're reporting is valid. I'm not very familiar at
all with chef, though.
Had I looked at this code, I would have just expected that something would run
that automatically in the other install paths (packages or omnibus).

It really looks like we're expecting for the install path to hook up the
running of chef-client. I just verified that the package install of
'chef' from the ubuntu archive will install a /etc/init.d/chef-client
script. That script will then either run at the appropriate time later
in boot (if cloud-init does nothing) or via the package's postinst
script (if cloud-init installs something).

So heres the table of conditions as I see them, looking at the current trunk
version of cloudinit/config/cc_chef.py:
1.) /usr/bin/chef-client exists and force_install not set
 packages's /etc/init.d/chef-client will run chef-client.
for other install path, generally *assumed* that there is some mechanism
for running on boot.
2.) /usr/bin/chef-client does not exist or force-install set.
 2A) gems:
 cloud-init runs chef-client -d -i 1800 -s 20

 2B) packages:
package's postinst script will run chef-client via /etc/init.d/chef-client

 2C) omnibus:
assumption is that executing 'omnibus_url' would result in chef-client
being executed *or* setting up execution to work on first boot that would
 happen later.

So which of those cases is wrong?

Sorry its taken so long to get a look at this, but the code generally
seems sane to me at this point. Theres no reason to run chef-client
if its going to be run elsewhere.

Please answer and set this back to 'new' or 'triaged' . Thanks.

get it, then this is bad news and we should do everythign we can to alert the

[Bug 1303934] Re: traceback when unable to reach metadata server

2014-06-03 Thread Scott Moser
I have to mark this as fix-released. I'm not really sure how you could have
seen the output you saw, and I just verified that cloud-init in trusty gives a
saner message. Heres how:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure cloud-init # select 'Azure' on an openstack instance,
something that iwll not be found
 sudo cloud-init init --local
 sudo cloud-init init

this shows on stderr:
 2014-06-03 13:28:56,208 - util.py[WARNING]: No instance datasource found!
Likely bad things to come!
the /var/log/cloud-init.log shows:

Jun 3 13:27:10 inst-trusty-20140602-191433 [CLOUDINIT] util.py[DEBUG]:
No instance datasource found! Likely bad things to come!#012Traceback

raise DataSourceNotFoundException(msg)#012DataSourceNotFoundException:

See here, the 'searched classes' is not empty.

The other part of this bug (what I actually think happened) is that
cloud-init did not sanely warn that it tried to read something from the
cloud_config_url and was unable to get it.

I'm just going to re-purpose this bug to that.

[Bug 1316357] Re: Network interface IP address not set on first boot if config drive used

2014-06-03 Thread Scott Moser
So I tihnk that the real solution for this bug is to somehow stop network
devices from coming up until after cloud-init has searched for local
datasources. There is still a case that would be odd if:
  - instance has /etc/network/interfaces configured for 'auto eth0'
 - instance has no local datasource
 - network datasource (openstack) had a network interfaces config for eth0.

at that point, the network would have already been up, and I'm really
just not keen on bouncing networking. Perhaps in that case, write the
network config and then reboot, to come back up configured correctly.

[Bug 1326049] [NEW] init script deletes /dev/ipmi0

2014-06-03 Thread Benjamin Rodgers
Public bug reported:

According to the init script, it deletes '/dev/ipmi0' whether or not
udev is in use for compatibility with kernels compiled for other
distributions.

# NOTES:
# * /dev/ipmi0 is unconditionally deleted here on ipmi_devintf unload,
# because SLES9 and RHEL4 kernels don't send a message for udev to delete
# it for us.

If you boot up with ipmi modules compiled into the kernel, the init
script will delete out '/dev/ipmi0' and never re-create it since it
tries to re-create the device by re-inserting the module. I'm currently
working around this problem by using the same check for udev used
elsewhere in the script, and never deleting the device files in the
first place.

Here's some standard information about the distribution we're running on and
package version.

~# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Release:12.04
~# apt-cache policy openipmi

[Bug 1322498] Re: Unable to set swift container ACL's on existing containers

2014-06-03 Thread Stéphane Graber
Hello James, or anyone else affected,

Accepted ceph into trusty-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ceph/0.80.1-0ubuntu1.1
in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 1313450] Re: Unable to start vsftpd on Ubuntu 14.04 (Amazon/EC2 or Xen) with default configuration

2014-06-03 Thread Ryan Finnie
I can confirm that 29c7787075c92ca8af353acd5301481e6f37082f applies
cleanly again the latest trusty tree (3.13.0-27.50), and does indeed fix
the vsftpd problem without apparent side effects.

[Bug 1325560] Re: kvm vm loses network connectivity under enough load

2014-06-03 Thread Izhar ul Hassan
yes, i've used the same virtual machines in both cases. everything is
the same except the driver. I switch from virtio to e1000

 glance image-update --property hw_vif_model=e1000 image-id

Now I relaunch the virtual cluster and everything works perfectly fine.
I've tested with 5 times the load but it doesnt crash anymore.

I have tested the same cluster configuration with virtio on Centos 6.5 kernel
2.6.32-431.17.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed May 7 23:32:49 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux and that crashes too.
I will test the centos version with e1000 and see if that works.

[Bug 1136110] Re: USB Audio Codec choppy playback

2014-06-03 Thread Alan Stern
I can't tell what's happening with daphile. Maybe it's simply a matter
of how much network activity or disk activity or graphics activity is
going on at the time. (Of course, storing a usbmon trace creates some
disk activity of its own...)

You can check whether graphics is the issue by switching to a VT console
while the audio is playing.

There is no way to reconfigure the PCI bus.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We noticed that you were installing the LTS version of
Ubuntu using an older version of the installation media. The latest
point release of 12.04 is 12.04.4. Please try installing from that
version of the installation media and see if that resolves your issue.
Thanks in advance!
