[Bug 1369224] [NEW] rsync preserve permission does not work

2014-09-14 Thread Gerben
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I am a regular user of rsync on various systems, giving parameters
'-prH' or '-prHl' to shift data over to other locations while retaining
correct permissions.

Today (Ubuntu 14.04.1 64 bits, rsync 3.1.0) I descovered the '-p'
parameter is not working. As root I'm copying the contents of the home
directory to a new location, but the owner/group is set as root.root,
not the intended user.

This is incorrect operation, and can be problematic for people who
automatically schedule rsync operations.

I can work around this (using tar and untar), but that is not as
cool/simple/efficient as using rsync.

Greetings,

Gerben

[Bug 1369222] [NEW] xorg random crash

2014-09-14 Thread teo1978
Public bug reported:

I was just watching a youtube video fullscreen in Google Chrome.
I exited fullscreen with the Esc key: starting from that moment, the whole
Google Chrome window's content was replaced by a frozen frame of the video (I
could still hear the audio streaming). I couldn't see the other tabs.
After a few seconds, Xorg crashed.

I already sent the automatical crash report (the window that pops up
telling you there was an internal problem) but that doesn't give me
any reference to the bug report, it doesn't even tell me if the report
was sent succesfully.

[Bug 1369223] [NEW] Crash report doesn't give return a link to the report sent, nor give any feedback of success/failure

2014-09-14 Thread teo1978
Public bug reported:

Not sure Apport is the correct package.

When something crashes, e.g. Xorg, a popup appears informing of that and
offering the possibility to report the error.

However, the issue is that:
1 - it does not give you the slightest feedback of whether the error was
reported succesfully. Immediately after clicking on Report, the window closes
and syou see nothing else (or you see the reporting questions, such as that
below, but never any progress information about the reporting process).

2 - it doesn't provide a link to any publicly accessible information
about the reported error. I don't know if such public information is
available, if it is not then it should. I don't know if a bug is opened
in Launchpad or any other public bugtracker. If it is not then it
should. Actually it should definitely offer the possibility to login on
Launchpad and file a launchpad bug report (in addition to whatever it
already does) if one has an account.

3 - It even goes to the extreme point of nonsense that, if the crash is
in Xorg, it asks you the usual question that ubuntu-bug would ask:
whether you are willing to do additional debugging work if asked by the
developers. Well, suppose I say Yes: how the hell are developers
supposed to contact me?? I don't think my email is stored anywhere in
the system, so unless it opens a browser and gives me an opportunity to
log in on Launchpad how does it know?

[Bug 1339706] Re: Unable to connect to flicker since their API change to https

2014-09-14 Thread Gordon Anderson
I am observing similar behaviour and although I can upload through a
browser I find the command line option far more palatable. The behavior
I am observing is as follows:

 flickr_upload --progress --title=test IMG_8681.JPG
IMG_8681.JPG: 100%
[]D
0h00m27s

This suggests to me that a connection is working. Perhaps the
authentication keys need regenerated. When I tried this the URL
redirected to came back with an error saying Oops! Flickr can't find a
valid callback URL. This suggests that the authorisation part of
flickr_upload also needs overhaul.

When checking authentication, a lack of SSL message is shown

 flickr_upload --check
?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8 ?
rsp stat=fail
err code=95 msg=SSL is required /
/rsp

Greetings,

[Bug 730984] Re: Kubuntu - Mount SAMBA shares when Dolphin access them via CIFS

2014-09-14 Thread vbspam
Let me share some thoughts about this topic.

@#9 Jamie Carl (jazz-funkynerd)

KDE use KIO-Slaves to access other then local protocol and/or meta-
protocols across all platforms. It is monumentally clever idea. However
it is not new idea. Microsoft uses the same technique. Just call it UNC
or so. Remember \\SERVER\SHARENAME ..

Looking to the Windows world, the application wanting to use network
share has two choices. Use the UNC API of Windows or use traditional DOS
API accessing filesystem (yes, the C:\DIRECTORY\TRACK02.mp3 ..). Of
course the use has to map network drive (linux users should read:
mount cifs share).

@#11 Jim Buddin (jimbuddin):
So now those who argued KDE should do it instead of 1+ apps should bother
with KIO-Slaves. Rethink that idea.. . Libre/Open Office while running Windows
also use \\ to access network shares..

Of course, there is another proposed solution: Give user the choice!
Mount or use KIO-Slave...

But, as there is almost always but. Have you worked with KDE using
mounted CIFS shares when the network disconects... . In most cases (at
least in my most cases) the whole KDE hangs and waits for timeouts. Yes
there must be something monumentally wrong in it, but as this is with us
for years, I believe it is hard to solve it. And back to the idea of
user choice mount or kio-slave. This is not hard task. It could be done
by script and/or KDE services, doesn't it?

[Bug 730984] Re: Kubuntu - Mount SAMBA shares when Dolphin access them via CIFS

2014-09-14 Thread vbspam
Anyway I feel the frustration too. At these days I discovered that VLC
(originally platform independed) music player supports smb:// access
better then Amarok (originally aimed to be the gratest KDE media/music
player). And more then this, they believe (at least Matěj Laitl
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=273881) that the poor support for
KIO-Slaves (smb:// ..) is good by design for the main KDE media player..
See the irony. This kind of bug sleeps in the KDE bug tracking system
for ages..

[Bug 1287827] Re: wifi not configurable in network-manager showing disabled by hardware switch

2014-09-14 Thread roytanck
I'm a long time Ubuntu user, but still quite new to Launchpad, so please
excuse my ignorance.

I'm wondering how issues like this one are usually resolved. This
appears to me to be a rather serious issue. It involves a popular Lenovo
notebook, the most recent Ubuntu, and an essential piece of hardware.

A solution appears to be available (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-
Discussion/Yoga-2-13-not-Pro-Linux-Warning/m-p/1517612#M5933), but it
involves compiling a kernel module. Not something I think regular users
should ideally have to deal with.

Is there any way of telling whether this will be fixed, and perhaps even
- when?

[Bug 1369231] [NEW] do-release-upgrade in localized environment does not accept english input

2014-09-14 Thread Kirill Bogdanenko
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I was running do-release-upgrade tool in an environment like:
LANG=ru_UA.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=ru:en:uk:en
LC_CTYPE=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_TIME=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_MONETARY=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_NAME=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=ru_UA.UTF-8
LC_ALL=

And during upgrade process I was not able to change my keyboard layout other
that to english (US).
But the tool had asked me questions in russian and expected that I will input
my answers in russian:

 66 пакетов будут удалены.

 Продолжить [дН]  Подробности [п]

I tried to input 'y' as for 'yes' but no luck. The workaround is to
copy-paste 'д' letter from terminal emulator. But when you are using tty
it can be a problem.

So please, can you make `do-release-upgrade` tool accept english input
despite the locale?

I am using:

[Bug 671789] Re: Shotwell rotates images incorrectly

2014-09-14 Thread Marcello Romani
Shotwell 0.14.1 here.
Steps to (re)produce the bug:
1) import images without copying - thumbnails and images are displayed
correctly, as per the orientation tag
2) double click on a vertical (i.e. taken in portrait mode) photo
3) right click - open with external editor (gimp)
4) gimp asks if I want to rotate or not - yes, rotate
5) modify image, then save
6) shotwell starts eating 100% cpu and eventually crashes; when re-launched,
the image is distorted (see screenshot)
issue 6) happens about 80% of the time.

For the record: photos were taken with a Canon 60D camera, and are
located on an external ext4-foramtted USB hard drive.

** Attachment added: Distorted image as shown by shotwell after being edited
with Gimp.

2014-09-14 Thread Joseph Bylund
Marcello,
This sounds very similar a bug that was fixed some time ago (I can't find the
bug report now). I'd recommend upgrading to a more recent version of shotwell
(I think the ubuntu repos should have 18.1?) and seeing if that fixes the issue.

[Bug 1369243] [NEW] Confusing log message in remove_all_inc_of_but_n_full mode

2014-09-14 Thread Steve Dodd
Public bug reported:

I've just spent an hour trying to understand why duplicity was not
deleting certain backup chains in remove_all_inc_of_but_n_full mode,
despite say it was. On every run, with the same parameters, it would
spit out:

Last full backup date: Tue Sep 9 16:47:20 2014
Deleting backup chains at times:
Tue Jul 29 05:40:01 2014

Deleting incremental backup chain Wed Aug 6 05:40:01 2014
Deleting incremental backup chain Tue Jul 29 05:40:01 2014

It turns out that those are full backups, and that duplicity _would_
have deleted any incremental chains attached to them (and probably has
on some previous run.) The attached patch is my suggested rewording of
the log message.

2014-09-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Trying to update from 5.04 (ubuntu 12.10) to 7.02 is NOT possible.

This results in the following message / warnings:
Failed to create backup.
It stops / breaks the update proces!

In the warnings log it shows:
Unable to move /usr/share/owncloud/3rdparty/aws-sdk to
/usr/share/owncloud/backup/tmp/3rdparty/aws-sdk

the backup directory is logically linked to backup -
/var/lib/owncloud/backup.

I tried several approaches: changing the ownership and group from root to
www-data.
changing the rights to 777 in the backup directory
creating a tmp directory with all rights and even removing 3rdparty.
Nothing works

Please help

[Bug 1356046] Re: Renaming bookmarks in Nautilus sidebar stops after pressing certain key-combinations

2014-09-14 Thread b3z13r
I frequently run into this problem whenever I want to rename a bookmark
into name@server. As soon as I type the @ symbol on a German
keyboard, that is pressing AltGr + Q, the focus gets lost and the
renaming stops.

The two workarounds are:
1.) copy the @-symbol from somewhere else by Ctrl+C and then paste it into the
new bookmark name by Ctrl+V
2.) use the bookmark manager from the top menu for any renaming

[Bug 1369250] [NEW] Blackscreen; lightdm not starting up after update

[Bug 463078] Re: Dia export to Cairo PNG causes mangled text fonts

2014-09-14 Thread Martijn
Christopher,

The bug report is about exporting to PNG (see title), so saying Won't
fix because export to SVG is deprecated seems odd.

The only reason SVG got mentioned in this bug report is because it
appears to be the only format that *isn't* broken.

Can confirm that PNG PDF are both broken here, and SVG export works
fine (even if it is deprecated).

[Bug 1369250] Re: Blackscreen; lightdm not starting up after update

2014-09-14 Thread Dave Gilbert
Some notes:
  1) The contents of /var/log/lightdm.log aren't being touched - so perhaps
it's not getting that far?
  2) Hmm /var/log/upstart/lightdm.log

root@davros:/var/log/upstart# more lightdm.log
/proc/self/fd/9: 24: exec: lightdm: not found
/proc/self/fd/9: 24: exec: lightdm: not found
/proc/self/fd/9: 24: exec: lightdm: not found
/proc/self/fd/9: 24: exec: lightdm: not found
/proc/self/fd/9: 24: exec: lightdm: not found
/proc/self/fd/9: 24: exec: lightdm: not found
/proc/self/fd/9: 24: exec: lightdm: not found
/proc/self/fd/9: 24: exec: lightdm: not found
/proc/self/fd/9: 24: exec: lightdm: not found

hmm; it looks like the lightdm packages got uninstalled (I did do an
autoremove after the update so I suspect a dependency has gone); but
given that log it looks like something was still trying to start lightdm
and it hadn't updated to select a new dm. So that's still a bug - but
not sure where; removing lightdm shouldn't try and start it.

Ok, I think I've found the confusion. This bug got linked to the wrong

It should be linked to the following bugs (which I've tried to do):

[Bug 1358871] Re: USB 3.0 connection is unreliable + xHCI xhci_drop_endpoint called with disabled ep

2014-09-14 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
I can confirm the bug with Ubuntu 14.04 on Linux

  * 3.13.0-35,
  * 3.14.1,
  * 3.16.2 and
  * 3.17-rc4

on two machines

  * Lenovo IdeaPad Z500 Touch with Lenvo BIOS 71CN45WW(V1.18)
  * Lenovo U410 with Phoenix BIOS 65CN90WW

with all combinations of two different enclosures

  * one with ESATA plug connected with USB 3.0 adapter
  * one with USB 3.0 plug

(both with external power supply) and

  * Western Digital WD50EFRX (5 TB)
  * Samsung HD103SI (1 TB)

on

  * USB 2.0 and
  * USB 3.0 interface

An explanation can be found here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/210879
/external-usb-3-drive-not-recognized (doesn't fix the issue, though).

The bug seems to be known

  * upstream: https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/3/6/284 (claims to be fixed in
3.14-rcX, but isn't (see above))
  * Debian: https://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2014/03/msg00153.html
(regression introduced in 3.13.5, relating to upstream)
  * Fedora: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1103234 (seems to occur
starting from version 18, still occurs in 3.15.x)

This seems to be a big, widespread issue for a bunch of people (The
problem is still there in 3.14.4; I haven't seen a USB 3.0 drive work
for 6 months [https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/36296]).

A look at alsamixer in the terminal shows the PCM value is 00 on the audio
device.
The slider in Ubuntu's desktop environment is at 100% when alsamixer shows PCM
 is at 100100 or Item: PCM dB gain: -0.06, -0.06
The slider is at 30% or so volume when I cease hearing anything and the PCM is
at 00 or Item: PCM dB gain: -28.19, -28.19.

[Bug 1325142] Re: failure to update libpam-systemd in 14.04 due to missing logind init script

2014-09-14 Thread jox
Hi Paul,

could you provide some more details?

I suppose you were using the 'uck-gui' command to remaster a Ubuntu
14.04.1 amd64 image?

How are you booting (DVD or USB)?

Did you boot right into the Live CD (by choosing Try Ubuntu)?

When and how exactly did you get this failure? (In fact while booting?
Or after invoking some apt commands or using Software Center in the
running Live Ubuntu?)

If possible, what happens if you invoke the following command in the
running remastered Ubuntu: 'initctl show-config'?

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-09-14 Thread NomAAd
I run the release upgrade from a completely up-to-date 12.04 from the Update
Manager and it completed without problem. After the upgrade had finished I
performed the restart and faced the
grub rescue
prompt and got puzzled understandably.
Then I searched and found this bug and figured out that the error might be
related to the boot order.
I have 2 HDDs in the box - one IDE and one SATA -, with a single Xubuntu
installation. The BIOS was set to boot from the IDE HDD, the OS resides on
that. In the BIOS boot order I moved the SATA HDD before the IDE HDD and after
a reboot 14.04 booted like a charm.

Thought I share my experience, since I didn't see this solution here
above. True, the report above is rather lengthy and I didn't read
through all the posts, so I'm sorry if I duplicated.

[Bug 1346269] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 won't shut down (reboots)

2014-09-14 Thread Jaap Woldringh
Adding to my report in #4, I discovered that the shutdown behaviour of my
computer changed by replacing the open source X.orgX graphics driver
(xserver-xorg-video-ati) by the nonfree driver called Video driver for the
AMD graphics accelerator of fglrx-updates. The other non free driver (without
the addition updates did not change things.
Now the system doesn't reboot after shutdown, but the shutdown halts halfway, I
guess after the hard disk stops rotating (noise stops), but the cooling
ventilators still run.

The graphics card is embedded in the AMD-processor, and is called
AMD/ATI: Richland [ Radeon HD 8570D]

This is an improvement, but it is still not how things should be, of
course, but might indicate where to seek.

Jaap Woldringh
