[Bug 790774] Re: ssh hangs after inactivity (maybe when connection is lost)

2014-12-21 Thread teo1978
I don't know why this was closed for inactivity. I provided the
information I was asked for, so this hould not have remnained in the
Incomplete state in the first place.

I can still reproduce this, systematically, and I have observed it on
several machines and with several servers (with different linux
distributions and from different hosting providers). So I'm going to
change this to confirmed.

There is one thing worth noting, though: this seems to happen when the client
is connected via WIFI (to a LAN connected to the Internet, of course), but not
when connected via an ethernet cable.
So, I guess this may be triggered by a network connection issue, not by the
server closing the connection?
In ANY case, the client should show a meaningful error message and quit, if the
connection really is broken: not doing so is a bug for sure; and it doesn't
seem there's a good reason for it breaking in the first place, either.

@zulcss please could you try if you can reproduce it when connected via
wifi?

[Bug 1401783] Re: Requirement argparse breaks package import

2014-12-21 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu
better.

I was able to reproduce this issue with python3-stevedore 1.1.0-0ubuntu1
on Ubuntu Vivid following the steps outlined above.

While researching, I found that upstream has had a similar bug report
quite recently and it seems like they are still building for python 2.6
(see bug 1372433 for details). However, I don't believe Ubuntu is still
shipping 2.6, so it might be possible to patch the package. I've marked
this issue as affecting upstream as well, to hear what they have to say.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend
performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include checking cable connections and using software tools
to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event that is is not
in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to
New. Thanks and good luck!

[Bug 1332220] Re: Backport hdmi_portclock_limit regression fix patch to allow forcing overclocking of DVI/HDMI signals

2014-12-21 Thread free5lot
Some news: solution of Joseph S Tate (jtate) from on 2014-06-19 works partly
(thanks Joseph!).
These changes allow to use 3.16.0-28 kernel, but during boot on encryption
stage (before / is accessible) the resolution is still incorrect, so user has
to enter password in blurred screen.

I insist this bug should be called an unfixed regression, maybe
desirable or inevitable, but still a regression:

E.g. user bough a huge monitor which worked perfectly with Windows in the shop,
came home and it doesn't work correctly with his favorite Linux distribution
with the same DVI-D cable.
And for him it's impossible to make xorg-config, put there ModeLines from Xorg
logs or xrandr output and etc. It's a step back to 1990th with all this manual
xorg-config stuff.

And even more, this monitor worked perfectly the year before with the
same Linux distro, and now it doesn't. For sure it's a regression, isn't
it?

[Bug 1079203] Re: bluetooth and network device pulse audio - jack audio connection defect

2014-12-21 Thread PeterPall
Jack over bluetooth still doesn't work. But I guess this isn't a kernel problem.
Normally a discussion about this problem leads to the question if the quality
and latency of bluetooth audio is high enough that it actually is worth to
consider. But sometimes you just don't want to do real-time work, don't care if
in theory you could buy a better stereo headset than this one, just get some
work done. ...and are surprised that this still isn't supported.

[Bug 1404619] [NEW] man init results in systemd man page instead of upstart

2014-12-21 Thread John Hall
Public bug reported:

# man init
Brings up the documentation for systemd but systemd is not being used as init.
This confuses users about which system is being used as init, and how to
manage services on the system.

You can see that this is still upstart with:
# sudo readlink /sbin/init
or
# ls -l /sbin/init

# man init
Should still result in the same thing as
# man upstart

Until systemd is used for init.

This effects 14.10 as of Dec 21, 2014

One solution would be to rename this systemd man page to, for example,
systemd-init
Users that have installed systemd as init will know what they are doing and
will be able to find that page.
Ubuntu should document the default init in manpages.

[Bug 1079203] Re: bluetooth audio (a2dp) and pulse audio network support missing

2014-12-21 Thread PeterPall
** Description changed:

- You have recorded something with ardour or rosegarden and want to hear
- it in the train or library with your headset? Bluetooth doesn´t work
- with jack over pulseaudio. But here is a workaround. It would be nice if
- there is a easy “ubuntu like” way to do this.
+ You have recorded something with ardour or rosegarden, want to hear it
+ in the train or library and all you have is a bluetooth headset?

- Steps to reproduce:
+ Admittedly Bluetooth isn't about the main goals jack wants to archive: It is
neither low-latency nor high quality. But many bluetooth devices supporting the
a2dp protocol provide a quality that is more than sufficient for everyday's
work, for some tasks latency doesn't really matter this much -
+ but as long as jackd doesn't support bluetooth you might not even be able to
start up your favourite application and that is suboptimal.

- - open a mediaplayer (for example audacious)
- - select output plugin Jack
- - rum qjackctl (jack)
- - connect mediaplayer to pa-sink
- - start mediaplayer
- - plugin Bluetooth device
- - open pulse audio preferences from the panel
- - choose output → internal soundcard – sound output ok
- - choose output → bluetooth device – no sound
-
- Workaround
+ There was a workaround:
  - open terminal „pactl load-module module-jack-source“
  - open pulse audio preferences from the panel
- - select input: jack source
- - select output: Bluetooth device
+   - select input: jack source
+   - select output: Bluetooth device
  open terminal „pactl load-module module-loopback”

+ Attention ever use first „pactl load-module module-jack-source“ then
+ plug on the bluetooth device. The other way around the module load
+ fails.

[Bug 1401624] Re: kernel WARNINGs when disabling WiFi with RF kill switch on Intel chip

2014-12-21 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Laurent Bonnaud, could you please advise to what usage impact this crash
has on using Ubuntu?

As well, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel
3.16 to 3.18 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed
immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified,
then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your
release. Could you please do this following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F
? Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit
bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1385137] Re: [ASUS N550JK] Touchpad recognized wrongly as PS/2 mouse

2014-12-21 Thread Federico Sassi
Dear Pilo6,
I have a FLT0101 and I've tried the binary version 3.16.0-29.39 from your
dropbox and now the touchpad is recognized as such and two-finger horizontal
and vertical gestures are working. Moreover also disabling single click while
typing seems to work.

Do you already have the plan to make a DKMS version of your patch so we
can still use the ubuntu stock kernel? I still have to check if with
this kernel I get regressions on other stuff.

THANK YOU!

[Bug 1385137] Re: [ASUS N550JK] Touchpad recognized wrongly as PS/2 mouse

2014-12-21 Thread Pilot6
@Federico

There is no good way to make a dkms package, because it can't be done as a
single module.
Instead I just keep that branch up to date with official Ubuntu kernel.
You can just update, when a new kernel vesion is released.

Sometime later this will be applied upstream and get into Ubuntu
kernels.

There must not be any regressions, since there are no potentially
dangerous commits.

1% of potential regression may be only with X200MA an UX302LA with
'acpi_osi=' quirk, but nothing has been noticed so far.

These commits are not applicable to N550JK model either way.

Hi David. Thanks. I did install from disk but then decided 15.04's not doing
enough of what I would like. Reinstalled 14.10/gnome 3.14. Thought you'd better
have the bug report anyway. Being in China sometimes not sure if it's a bug or
interference. 15.04 will be astonishing a bit further down the line, I think.
All the best. Pat

Have you checked with upstream if those are the only patches needed?
Based on the release notes and the commit log I think you are right, but
it may be worth double-checking with upstream.

[Bug 1404643] [NEW] Log In password field missing for user accounts during login

2014-12-21 Thread themusicgod1
Public bug reported:

* Restarted computer, log in screen came up complete with the user name,
the correct session selected...but the password field itself was
invisible. It was roughly where it should have been, and did allow for
selection/typing input of the password via keyboard, however, it was not
visible. Everything else seemed to be in the correct place/visible,
just not the field to enter the password.

* Changed the user to log in from the main user account to the guest
account, and back: the field didn't return.

* Logged in as a guest user and logged out, the field didn't return.

[Bug 1211479] Re: package slpd 1.2.1-9 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2014-12-21 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Raring Ringtail reached EOL on
January 27, 2014.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

I've tried recreating this bug with Utopic Unicorn (14.10) and was
unable to, given the information you've provided. Please upgrade to the
latest version and re-test. If the bug is still reproducible, increase
the verbosity of the steps to recreate it so we can try again.

Do feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

1. Create a launcher with Use startup notification checked.
2. Clic on it.

What happened:
The window opened is not focused

What I expected to happen:
This new window would be focused automatically

I have tried to change every settings in xfwm4-tweaks-settings without

Launchers on the panel, with Use startup notification works great.

Steps to reproduce (corrected):
1. Create a launcher on your desktop with Use startup notification
checked.
2. Click on it.

When using startup notification, the timestamp used do decide if focus
should be set or not is from the startup notification mechanism.

So most likely, what happens is that additional activity occurs with the
desktop window after the timestamp is recorded for startup
notification... So when the window manager compares last activity
timestamp against the startup notification provided timestamp, it finds
the latter to be older and therefore won't focus the window.

--

@Landry Breuil
I've heard about a mechanism that don't focus the window if the application
take too much time to open. In order to not distract the user if he was doing
something else during that time.
But my windows don't get focused even with light applications that open
immediately (gcalctool...).
Same results by pressing Enter to run the launcher, without touching my mouse.

--

I've just noticed I don't get the cursor animation too, that should play
during the opening of a launcher with Use startup notification
checked.

The same launcher with use startup application checked:
Launcher on panel: Focus works. Hourglass* FAILS
Launcher on thunar: Focus works. Hourglass* FAILS
Launcher on the desktop: Focus FAILS. Hourglass* FAILS

*Hourglass: By that, I mean the cursor-idle-animation.

Any fixes for this? For some strange reason I do still see these
warnings even if I manually added the paths to /etc/.bzrignore

[Bug 1388786] Re: TCP stale transfer with erroneous SACK information

2014-12-21 Thread Uwe Schindler
I can confirm this bug with the 3.13 kernel shipped with Ubuntu 14.04.
The 3.2 kernel shipped with Ubuntu 12.04 did not have the problem, all
download were succeeding. The problem started after upgrade to 14.04.
The problem also solved after downgrading the kernel to 3.2 by
downloading the latest 12.04 (Linux 3.2) one from the PPA.

Disabling TCP SACK also resolved the issue. I also tried newer PPA
kernels, at least the next one for release with next Ubuntu Update
(3.14) does not solve the problem yet.

In our case the problems happens mostly with far-away or slower DSL
connections, trying to download large files from our webserver. The
download starts fine, but suddenly slows down to 0 bytes/sec. It then
sometimes recovers, but fails again after a short while.

The tcpdump showed, that the client is sending SACKs over and over, but
the Ubuntu kernel does not understand them. In our case we also have
Cisco hardware inbetween.

[Bug 1354668] Re: 0ccd:00ab Won't resume from suspend using DVB-t USB stick

2014-12-21 Thread sander
Ok, I discovered my computer *never* can resume if I remove the closed
source nvidia driver. When I remove this driver, I also cannot resume my
current 3.13.0-43 kernel which does resume with this driver installed.
So, my report that the bug is still existing in newer kernels, may or
may not be valid. I just cannot test this on my computer as the nvidia
driver does not work with these newer kernels.

Anyway, I still think resuming is not the problem. I guess the problem
is when trying to enter sleep state. When the DVB-t stick is playing
content, it is sending data to the kernel. Probably the kernel does not
block this data stream when going to sleep causing this data to fill
some kernel buffers which then causes the computer to fail entering
sleep and stop responding. (The light of my power button stays on when
this happens!)

[Bug 1404548] Re: sort --reverse does not reverse numeric sorts

2014-12-21 Thread rdks
This is not a bug, but expected behaviour.

If an ordering option is supplied to '-k' ('n' in this particular case),
global ordering options are overridden.

I.e. when sort is called this way:
sort --reverse -k2
the global option '--reverse' takes effect.

But in this case:
sort --reverse -k2n
the '--reverse' option is overridden by 'n', therefore the command
becomes equivalent to:
sort -n -k2

The solution woud be to to either stick to global options:
   sort --reverse --numeric-sort -k2
or if sorting options for multiple fields are required, to add a
local reverse option to '-k':
   sort -k2rn

BTW: this behaviour is also documented in the man page:
...
   -k, --key=KEYDEF
sort via a key; KEYDEF gives location and type
...
KEYDEF is F[.C][OPTS][,F[.C][OPTS]] for start and stop position, where F
is a field number and C a character position in the field; both are origin 1,
and the stop position defaults to the line's
end. If neither -t nor -b is in effect, characters in a field are
counted from the beginning of the preceding whitespace. OPTS is one or more
single-letter ordering options [bdfgiMhnRrV], which
override global ordering options for that key. If no key is given, use
the entire line as the key.
...

broken policykit described in this bug:

[Bug 1382843] Re: uoa publishing on flickr, corrupted double-linked list error

2014-12-21 Thread Janne Moren
Something happened in the last week or so of updates for 14.10. Instead
of crashing directly or shortly after uploading, now the Flickr dialog
hangs busy-waiting for a minute or two, after which Shotwell crashes.
Now it's impossible to upload things at all, in other words.

[Bug 1240336] Re: Not authorized to perform operation / Unable to determine the session we are in: No session for pid

2014-12-21 Thread arty
In my case the deinstallation of ulatencyd has solved the problem.

I had the problem in the old install, made a clean install and at some
point started seeing the problem again. Somehow I guessed I should try
deinstalling ulatencyd and it helped indeed. Installing it again and
rebooting makes the problem appear again.

I have reported the issue to ulatencyd as
