[Bug 1431967] Re: Double appmenu entry GNOME Terminal 3.14

2015-03-13 Thread Egmont Koblinger
Having two Terminal entries is indeed a bug.

As for opening a new tab: There's only a single New Terminal entry,
which opens either a new tab or a new window, based on the setting under
Edit-Preferences. The shortcut keys Ctrl+Shift+N and Ctrl+Shift+T are
still available.

[Bug 1431641] Re: Bug Apparmor on print preview Fotoxx

2015-03-13 Thread Tyler Hicks
Confirmed on Vivid (evince 3.14.2-0ubuntu1).

At first glance, it looks like the evince-previewer profile needs to
'#include dbus' in order to connect to the system bus. However,
testing is needed to confirm that there are no additional accesses
needed after granting permission to connect to the system bus.

Marking as 'Low' since preview and print still work as expected.

[Bug 1329034] Re: Touchpad only recognized as mouse2 but does not offer scrolling

2015-03-13 Thread Felix Kay
Possibly #1336086 is a dublicate.

I am confirming this bug for my DELL LATITUDE D620 (old machine) and
Ubuntu Trusty LTS.

The trouble with the touchpad driver - the touchpad being misrecognised
as a PS2 mouse - seems to occure with different DELL models as well as
even with different manufacturers (cf. #1336086).

Since working with a pointing device is essential to productive working
on a computer and since there has been often trouble with this driver
since Ubuntu Precise (solving the bug seems to have been eventually
dropped for Precise, Quantal etc.) I would like to suggest that a bug
solution should be intensively worked on.

[Bug 1426361] Re: Alarms API should expose a unique permanent alarm ID that clock app can use to open an alarm

2015-03-13 Thread Charles Kerr
See also: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-
datetime/+bug/1426519

I think what we want to do is move the logic out of datetime if possible
so that datetime can move from seeing things as everything's a clock-
app alarm or calendar event to being a passthrough with less hardcoded
logic in it. The rationale for this is we now want to add support for
the reminder app, and we also want to support 3rd party apps.

So this bug has the right idea, but it would be better if, instead of a
unique ID that datetime had to be coded to understand, that ui-toolkit
or clock-app generated a url that datetime could blindly pass to url-
dispatch().

[Bug 1430620] Re: gnome-terminal writes excessively to /tmp (affecting SSD drives)

2015-03-13 Thread Egmont Koblinger
If it was for me, I probably would have dropped infinite scrollback
support. But apparently some people find it really useful.

We already have a certain code. It was designed with multiple criteria
in mind, including infinite scrollback support, efficient storing on
disk, compression, encryption and so on - storing in memory wasn't
really among these. Tons of code have been built up around these
assumptions.

The main question is not how/why we got here, but how to move on from
here without reimplementing everything from scratch in a totally
different way (and also: why move on at all). I mean re-writing a huge
amount of code is also a possibility, but given the current resources
for vte development it's unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future.
We should accept where we are and find the simplest way to extend that
to keep the data in memory. As I stated in the upstream bug, I believe
the brand new memfd support of Linux seems to be the easiest way. (Or,
as a quick workaround, you can already make it store the scrollback
under a tmpfs-mounted directory. That's pretty much what memfd would
give you, without requiring a tmpfs mount point.)

Why turn things so far upside down to support an edge case (infinite
scrollback left open for long periods of time)?

I can't see why the time should matter here.

We either properly support infinite scrollback (not as an edge case;
without risking heavy swapping and OOM), or we don't. If we do, its
scrollback has to reside on disk. I hope this is clear so far. The
decision was made: we do support it. Most of the scrollback code was
written with this decision in mind.

Have you installed newest vte with the patch I attached, or any other
means of measuring its write activity? I really do want to see numbers
before we move on. The numbers so far still give me an impression that
even for extremely heavy terminal users gnome-terminal would still be
responsible for probably less than 1%/year of SSD wear-out. I'm waiting
for counter-proofs. (Could you please also describe in words what's your
average terminal activity like? E.g. do you have tasks running in the
background that continuously produce data, do you run big compilations
that print a lot, etc.?)

[Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2015-03-13 Thread elr77
I would be very disappointed if this bug was not resolved because my
personal work on agent based modelling and development in Java and
SciLab/Matlab means I need to use 3 possibly 4 monitors with the centre
monitor as my primary monitor.

I didn't comment earlier because after web searches I noticed that this
was a problem with any thing based on Ubuntu 14.04 and partly why I
wished Freya was based on a new version of ubuntu. Anyway for me the
solution posted by Nicolas Bernaerts worked perfectly and consistently.
There was the one moment if broken after running a dist-upgrade but I
resolved by just rerunning the fix. If it is any help to the developers
or other users you can find the fix at

http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/linux/74-ubuntu/309-ubuntu-dual-display-
monitor-position-lost

I would help develop an integration of the fix into elementary OS but,
my coding skills only go as far as Java a bit of C# and Matlab.

[Bug 1394731] Re: [MIR] grilo-plugins

2015-03-13 Thread Steve Langasek
I am not asking for this MIR to be rejected, nor am I asking that the
desktop team monitor the bug mail. What I am looking for is clarity
about who is ultimately responsible for addressing any problems with
this package with respect to the main inclusion requirements - including
any MIRs that might be required for further future dependencies. This
was the intent from my side when we had the discussion that led to
listing this as a requirement on the wiki page; I'm sorry if that intent
didn't come through clearly.

Logically, I don't think it makes sense for the development team for a
universe flavor to be ultimately responsible for a package with respect
to main. Would you agree?

FWIW the context for why I care about this is basically
http://reqorts.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/m-r-package-team-mapping.html.
It's important to have an escalation path for bugs on packages in main,
and I believe it's a bug to have unowned packages in main. (I think
it's also a bug that lubuntu and xubuntu are considered owners on that
page, since like ubuntu-gnome they are universe flavors; but note that
they each only have one package subscription listed, for a package that
is co-owned by the desktop team.)

Anyway, this isn't a problem that's specific to this MIR bug, so I'm
happy to take the general discussion to email with the MIR team. Would
the desktop team be happy marking ~desktop-packages as a subscriber for
grilo and grilo-plugins?

On another note, it will be great that every archive admin members
follow the same procedure when promoting a package to main. The
bug is still opened and not fixed release, I was not even aware then
that it's been promoted already. I don't think I handle that promotion
on the 04 of march, which is quite recent (my logs and command
doesn't show this). Sad that we don't have in the UI launchpad logs
 showing who originated the request.

Yes, agreed on all points. It's clearly incorrect to promote a package
to main without updating the bug, and it's very unfortunate that we
don't have audit logs to show who promoted the package. I will address
this with the archive admin team.

[Bug 1429011] Re: 15.04 wallpapers package

2015-03-13 Thread Tommy_CZ
Hi, may I ask you why the 4,7 MB is too high? :) It is for the first
wallpaper, first graphic thing user will see, I do not think we can
enter into a compromise here... it is about 5 MB, other community
wallpapers can have about 35MB in their best JPEG quality, so result can
be 40MB at the most, how can this be too much in a world where CD
limitations doesn't exist and every almost every successful operating
system has MUCH more than about 700MB? :)

Would it be possible to make the bug private while you review it?

Feel free to do that, or just send me the log via private mail. But
indeed I'm mostly interested in the relation of when eth0/wifi is
brought down during shutdown, and when media-test_mount.mount gets
unmounted. The log excerpt certainly suggests that the wifi/eth stopped
*before* this snippet? Do you see related log output for that?

Do you use NetworkManager with dynamic devices, or
/etc/network/interfaces?

[Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses

2015-03-13 Thread bitinerant
Whether this is a bug or feature request, I don't know, but to be sure,
it is possible to do this with a .conf file and sudo service openvpn
start and not possible to do it via network-manager-openvpn (unless you
count disabling dnsmasq--I'm curious what side effects this has). As
described in the original report, I have verified that these lines in a
.conf file allow the server to configure DNS (as long as the server
pushes 3 or more DNS servers):

  script-security 2
  up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf
  down /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf

but network-manager-openvpn does not support the 'up' and 'down'.

This same issue was addressed here:

[Bug 1340510] Re: Session screen seen upon quick power key strike

2015-03-13 Thread kevin gunn
@duflu - then why not link even more branches? to me the whole point of
attaching a branch is to indicate resolution. I do not see any point in
attaching a branch that's not destined to provide a solution for the bug.
If the attached branch _is_ a solution for the bug, then i wholeheartedly agree.
So is lp:~vanvugt/mir/flush a solution in part or in whole ?

[Bug 1431836] Re: Boot process takes too long when Ethernet is not connected

2015-03-13 Thread Martin Pitt
@Oli: timesyncd is part of systemd, and it doesn't need any integration
with ifupdown. It listens for coming and going network connections by
itself and adjusts its wakeups according to network availability and
precision of the clock. I specifically enabled this because the snappy
team asked me to :-)

@Victor: indeed, so everything which is auto in
/etc/network/interfaces/* is required for a complete boot. But I'm still
confused why it's blocking network.target. What kind of install is that,
standard snappy image on some laptop or beagle board or so? I'll try to
reproduce that in a snappy VM.

Anyway, I'm off to holidays for the next 1.5 weeks, so I'm setting that
to NEW for now. Thank you so far!
