[Bug 1426361] Re: Alarms API should expose a unique permanent alarm ID that clock app can use to open an alarm
See also: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator- datetime/+bug/1426519 I think what we want to do is move the logic out of datetime if possible so that datetime can move from seeing things as everything's a clock- app alarm or calendar event to being a passthrough with less hardcoded logic in it. The rationale for this is we now want to add support for the reminder app, and we also want to support 3rd party apps. So this bug has the right idea, but it would be better if, instead of a unique ID that datetime had to be coded to understand, that ui-toolkit or clock-app generated a url that datetime could blindly pass to url- dispatch(). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1426361 Title: Alarms API should expose a unique permanent alarm ID that clock app can use to open an alarm To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-ui-toolkit/+bug/1426361/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Swap is the equivalent of main memory: the security issues are no different. Nobody can complain about swap written to disk, as that's a risk for any piece of main memory at any time. [Bug 1430620] Re: gnome-terminal writes excessively to /tmp (affecting SSD drives)
If it was for me, I probably would have dropped infinite scrollback support. But apparently some people find it really useful. We already have a certain code. It was designed with multiple criteria in mind, including infinite scrollback support, efficient storing on disk, compression, encryption and so on - storing in memory wasn't really among these. Tons of code have been built up around these assumptions. The main question is not how/why we got here, but how to move on from here without reimplementing everything from scratch in a totally different way (and also: why move on at all). I mean re-writing a huge amount of code is also a possibility, but given the current resources for vte development it's unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future. We should accept where we are and find the simplest way to extend that to keep the data in memory. As I stated in the upstream bug, I believe the brand new memfd support of Linux seems to be the easiest way. (Or, as a quick workaround, you can already make it store the scrollback under a tmpfs-mounted directory. That's pretty much what memfd would give you, without requiring a tmpfs mount point.) Why turn things so far upside down to support an edge case (infinite scrollback left open for long periods of time)? I can't see why the time should matter here. We either properly support infinite scrollback (not as an edge case; without risking heavy swapping and OOM), or we don't. If we do, its scrollback has to reside on disk. I hope this is clear so far. The decision was made: we do support it. Most of the scrollback code was written with this decision in mind. Have you installed newest vte with the patch I attached, or any other means of measuring its write activity? I really do want to see numbers before we move on. The numbers so far still give me an impression that even for extremely heavy terminal users gnome-terminal would still be responsible for probably less than 1%/year of SSD wear-out. I'm waiting for counter-proofs. (Could you please also describe in words what's your average terminal activity like? E.g. do you have tasks running in the background that continuously produce data, do you run big compilations that print a lot, etc.?) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1430620 Title: gnome-terminal writes excessively to /tmp (affecting SSD drives) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vte/+bug/1430620/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1394731] Re: [MIR] grilo-plugins
I am not asking for this MIR to be rejected, nor am I asking that the desktop team monitor the bug mail. What I am looking for is clarity about who is ultimately responsible for addressing any problems with this package with respect to the main inclusion requirements - including any MIRs that might be required for further future dependencies. This was the intent from my side when we had the discussion that led to listing this as a requirement on the wiki page; I'm sorry if that intent didn't come through clearly. Logically, I don't think it makes sense for the development team for a universe flavor to be ultimately responsible for a package with respect to main. Would you agree? FWIW the context for why I care about this is basically http://reqorts.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/m-r-package-team-mapping.html. It's important to have an escalation path for bugs on packages in main, and I believe it's a bug to have unowned packages in main. (I think it's also a bug that lubuntu and xubuntu are considered owners on that page, since like ubuntu-gnome they are universe flavors; but note that they each only have one package subscription listed, for a package that is co-owned by the desktop team.) Anyway, this isn't a problem that's specific to this MIR bug, so I'm happy to take the general discussion to email with the MIR team. Would the desktop team be happy marking ~desktop-packages as a subscriber for grilo and grilo-plugins? On another note, it will be great that every archive admin members follow the same procedure when promoting a package to main. The bug is still opened and not fixed release, I was not even aware then that it's been promoted already. I don't think I handle that promotion on the 04 of march, which is quite recent (my logs and command doesn't show this). Sad that we don't have in the UI launchpad logs showing who originated the request. Yes, agreed on all points. It's clearly incorrect to promote a package to main without updating the bug, and it's very unfortunate that we don't have audit logs to show who promoted the package. Would it be possible to make the bug private while you review it? Feel free to do that, or just send me the log via private mail. [Bug 1431836] Re: Boot process takes too long when Ethernet is not connected
@Oli: timesyncd is part of systemd, and it doesn't need any integration with ifupdown. It listens for coming and going network connections by itself and adjusts its wakeups according to network availability and precision of the clock. I specifically enabled this because the snappy team asked me to :-) @Victor: indeed, so everything which is auto in /etc/network/interfaces/* is required for a complete boot. But I'm still confused why it's blocking network.target. What kind of install is that, standard snappy image on some laptop or beagle board or so? I'll try to reproduce that in a snappy VM. Anyway, I'm off to holidays for the next 1.5 weeks, so I'm setting that to NEW for now.
