[Bug 1431141] Re: systemd-logind crashed with SIGABRT in udev_device_get_sysattr_value()

 $ journalctl -b -u systemd-logind.service
 No journal files were found.

Ah, apparently you are not in the adm group. Can you please re-try
with

  sudo journalctl -b -u systemd-logind.service

[Bug 1438301] Re: desktop machine suspends with systemd after ~3 minutes, does NOT suspend with upstart

2015-03-31 Thread Martin Pitt
The log shows that something requests the suspend over D-Bus. The most
probable candidate for this is logind. After this happens, can you
please copypaste the output of journalctl -f -b -u systemd-logind
here? That should show key presses and which buttons it listens to.

To confirm that it's logind, could you check if that stops happening if
you set HandleLidSwitch=ignore in /etc/systemd/logind.conf and then
reboot? There's a chance that it isn't actually logind as we use the
exact same logind and lid switch handling under upstart, just that we
replace the actual suspend D-Bus interface with systemd-shim.

Thanks!

[Bug 1438306] Re: External monitors receive no signal

2015-03-31 Thread Martin Pitt
Your dmesg contains that:

[ 8849.688210] [drm:intel_dp_complete_link_train [i915]] *ERROR* failed to
train DP, aborting
[ 9438.466017] [drm:intel_dp_complete_link_train [i915]] *ERROR* failed to
train DP, aborting
[ 9464.436928] [drm:intel_dp_complete_link_train [i915]] *ERROR* failed to
train DP, aborting

Did you file the bug report right after this failure, i. e. is this
current information?

Can you reproduce this with sudo apt-get install --reinstall systemd?
If so, that's most probably fallout from bug 1431200; this is just about
the only (indirect) way how systemd touches graphics, so if that doesn't
reproduce it, this is a kernel bug. Thanks!

[Bug 1436074] Re: tab previews black [arale only]

2015-03-31 Thread Timo Jyrinki
The current guess is that this is a driver specific problem related to
offscreen image rendering, since the bug only happens on arale and
started when the webbrowser started using the new Qt 5.4 function that
uses that OpenGL feature.

I'm not sure where to file this under Ubuntu-the-distro.

[Bug 1417263] Re: sdhci: Timeout waiting for Buffer Read Ready interrupt during tuning procedure, falling back to fixed sampling clock

2015-03-31 Thread Yoshiya KANENISHI
I was troubled by the same problem.
My laptop machine is HP Stream 11 d012tu. It's also using eMMC. (I think it is
almost same to HP Stream 13.)
I updated kernel version from 3.13.0-48-generic to 3.19.3-031903-generic
following the advice of jsalisbury, but didn't update Ubuntu version (kept
using 14.04), and then this error disappeared.
This thread was very helpful for me, thanks.

Re: [Bug 1434758] Re: mysqld: errno: 24 - Too many open files

2015-03-31 Thread Akhil Mohan
Hi Robie,

The internal assessment here is that most appropriate solution would be
the one you have mentioned as the last option.

It would be easier if user owns the responsibility for creating and
managing the MySQL service file under /etc with following settings or
more as needed:
[Service]
LimitNOFILE=x
LimitMEMLOCK=x

This will help in avoiding any conflict between user settings and
package settings. We may add a comment to explain this to the users.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Regards,

I understand though that users do want to be able to tune the value. So,

my.cnf, or from the systemd service definition - whereas previously
users tended to do it in just my.cnf. Having it set in two places is
confusing. my.cnf cannot raise beyond the systemd setting, but we cannot
make the systemd setting infinity because of the security concern
 above.

So given that I don't want to change systemd's default to infinity, I
think it makes sense to expect users to change the systemd service
 definition (copy /lib/systemd/system/mysql.service to
/etc/systemd/system/ and set LimitNOFILE etc there) if they want to
change the default value, and to not set open_files_limit in my.cnf at
 all.

If this is reasonable, then this bug is Invalid. Is it reasonable?
 Comments appreciated.

[Service]
LimitNOFILE=x
LimitMEMLOCK=x

This will help in avoiding any conflict between user settings and
package settings. We may add a comment to explain this to the users.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Regards,
Akhil

[Bug 1356892] Re: the buttons minimize, maximize, close in caja desappear

2015-03-31 Thread Adam Bilbrough
I have tested this in 15.04 Beta 2 (fully updated) and this issue
happens not because of 2 Caja windows open but when a window is not in
focus.

1. Open any window (Caja, Control Centre etc)
2. Left Click outside the window (window will then not be in focus)
3. Hover the mouse cursor over the 3 buttons to the right and the left window
control button
4. Buttons disappear when hovered over when the window is not in focus.

I've added an image so you can see. The buttons are not merely faded
when hovered but the graphics do actually disappear.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.  It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general.  It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it.  You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit

would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at

tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a

[Bug 1437765] Re: No desktop after upgrade to 14.10

2015-03-31 Thread Jeroen T. Vermeulen
So to be clear: my desktop is still utterly broken, but the one on an
installer disc for the same version is not. Hopefully there is a simple
configuration problem. I haven't done anything very special, I thought.

[Bug 1283763] Re: Cannot connect to WPA Enterprise networks

2015-03-31 Thread Maarten Bonnema
Hi There too,

Yes, I managed as well by manually editing. In fact I took a working eduroam
settings-file from my laptop, removed the mac-address, and moved it to the
ubuntu phone. Indeed chmod +600 was necessary.
Also, strangely, I had to change eap to ttls and phase2-auth to pap.
Now it works.

[Bug 1366418] Re: Bluetooth BCM43142A0 doesn’t work

2015-03-31 Thread ghortor
Hi Mark,

I’m not able to confirm this works right now, I’m having hard time
recompiling kernel modules. I just tried yesterday, as I haven’t got
much time so far. I will send an update as soon as I succeeded in
compiling kernel module.

Be aware that I will test solution in message #12 for my ubuntu kernel,
which is 3.13 ( 3.16 as written in the solution). I’d rather let ubuntu
decide which kernel needs to be used, even if I can’t use bluetooth
(this is not a mandatory option for me).

Regards,

[Bug 1438494] Re: ghostscript fails to correctly substitute cidf fonts

2015-03-31 Thread cliddell
The root problem here is that the Ubuntu package contains cidfmap
mappings that provide substitutions for various CIDFonts that may not be
embedded in incoming files. But the Ghostscript package does not depend
on the package(s) containing those font files, so those font files are
often not available.

Historically, Ghostscript has assumed that such system level
configuration was correct, and did minimal error checking on them, thus
by the time Ghostscript realises the font files are not available, it is
too late to recover gracefully, and we have to error out.

The most recent Ghostscript releases are more rigorous in that area, and
should cope better.

Nevertheless, it would be preferable if the fonts references in the
mappings were made dependencies of the Ghostscipt package.

*Or* remove those mappings altogether, as they are much less relevant
since we now have a built-in CIDFont substitution in Ghostscript, using
DroidSansFallback.ttf.

A final suggestion would be to remove the mappings from the default
Ghostscript package, and rely on the DroidSansFallback.ttf substitution,
and move the existing mappings to a separate package which holds the
mapping configuration, and depends on the packages containing the
relevant font files.

I feel the last suggestion would be the most desirable, since the
DroidSansFallback.ttf substitution will work work just fine for the vast
majority of people, who don't need to be forced to install a load of
KANJI fonts, but allows the flexibility for those who genuinely need
more accurate CIDFont substitution than simply falling back to
DroidSansFallback.ttf.

Finally, the generic mappings such as Adobe-Identity and Adobe-
Japan1 should be removed altogether as, except in very rare
circumstances, those should all fall through to the
DroidSansFallback.ttf substitution.

I can provide a complete list of those generic mappings if
required.

Chris

[Bug 1438535] Re: Last full charge should displays more precise values

2015-03-31 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks, the current behaviour is what is specified in the design [1]

The “Last full charge” should similarly be displayed to zero decimal
places, using the most appropriate unit: for example, “2 hours ago” or
“51 minutes ago”.

Not sure if what you request is right, would that apply to hours as
well? fully charged for 9 hours and 10 minutes rather than 9 hours?
Are the specific that important?

Matthew, do you have any design input on that request?

[Bug 1438249] Re: /sbin/dhclient is unconfined after switch to systemd (aka, equivalent of upstart's network-interface-security.conf not implemented)

2015-03-31 Thread John Johansen
So just a little more context around this whole split in policy loading.
AppArmor does a check that the cached policy is current and matches to
the kernel before loading and then if not falls back to recompiling
policy. The policy load was split into an early stage
(/etc/apparmor/init) and full policy (/etc/apparmor.d/), so that early
boot would only load the minimum amount of policy needed during early
boot to minimize potential delays (specifically fallback to compile)
during early boot. The recompile is not such an issue in later boot as
it can be run in parallel with more services.

TLDR: The split is all about boot speed. It would be easier and safer if
all policy was loaded as early as possible.

More context:
* apparmor init scripts all sys V and not upstart based (for various reasons)
* apparmor_parser at the time would only process one file and had to be called
multiple times (which slowed down loading) - (FIXED)
* apparmor_parser is single threaded, so shell scripts were used to get
parallel loading/compiles - (NOT fixed)
* apparmor_parser was a LOT (at least a couple orders of magnitude) slower at
compiles when this was done
* apparmor_parser couldn't properly build policy for anything but the current
kernel, so policy compile was always left to first boot of a given kernel
  - specifying the feature set was broken (FIXED)
  - the abi matching had issues (FIXED)
  - new kernels didn't ship the needed feature information to compile policy
for the kernel during kernel installed so policy compiles needed to wait until
booting into the new kernel (NOT fixed)
* apparmor only supported a single cache ( NOT fixed - soon)
  - needed to support policy for multiple kernels, having policy compiled
before boot.

[Bug 1438575] [NEW] OpenJdk 7 and OpenJdk 8 miss-report the os.arch field and cause java apps to crash.

2015-03-31 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

Problem Description
===
OpenJdk 7 and OpenJdk 8 miss report the os.arch field and cause java apps to
crash.

When we run under OpenJDK on a ubuntu ppc64el system the os.arch system
properites gets reported as ppc64.

This causes multiple java libraries to load the wrong native
architecture modules as it thinks this is a big endian machine, rather
than a ppc64le machine.

---uname output---
Linux tulgpu002 3.16.0-30-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 12 22:07:11 UTC 2015
ppc64le ppc64le ppc64le GNU/Linux

Machine Type = 8247-42L

Steps to Reproduce
===
make sure an openjdk is installed.
sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk

Create a very simple java properties dumper.

cat sysprop.java EOF
class sysprop{
  public static void main(String[] args){
System.getProperties().list(System.out);
   }
}
EOF

and run it and look for the os.arch output.

javac sysprop.java

This is an interesting comment in the openJDK bugs database:

https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8073139

apparently there was a decision to NOT give the architecture a unique
name, and that is inconstant with other JDK/JRE's, and it breaks a LOT
of code.

[Bug 1394338] Re: gnome-terminal's menu is missing File/Open Tab

2015-03-31 Thread michael da cova
According to
http://worldofgnome.org/opening-a-new-terminal-tabwindow-in-gnome-3-12/ ,
this is a deliberate change. You have to go into Edit/Preferences/General to
control whether Open Terminal opens the terminal in a new window or a new
tab, if you want to use the menu item (or use the hidden keyboard shortcuts
to choose either one, if you can discover them). I didn't think the original
menu was that bloated.

[Bug 1438626] [NEW] Nautilus window grayed out connecting to samba share

2015-03-31 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Public bug reported:

Attempting to connect to a network share via Registered User Forget
password immediately Connect immediately shows the same window, with
the radio button on Anonymous, the password field blank, and the window
grayed out.

The samba share is a Vivid instance.

This used to work without a problem via a Trusty server+client, and I
think also a Trusty server+Utopic client. Hence, this is a regression.

[Bug 1438629] [NEW] Packaged UIAutomatorViewer is broken

2015-03-31 Thread Romain Vimont

The problem is that the wrapper script pass /usr/share/java as parameter
for -Djava.ext.dirs, while uiautomatorviewer also depends on eclipse-rcp
jars installed in /usr/lib/eclipse/plugins.

The patch attached fixes the problem.

[Bug 1438393] Re: Cannot authenticate to swingbyswing.com

2015-03-31 Thread Michael Zanetti
The reply is in json format. However, the content type header is set to
text/html for some reason. I assume it would work for the else if
branch too, as that one seems to fall back to the jsonParser if the
plaintextParser fails. Haven't tried it though and I wiped my device
with this branch already.
