Thanks Bruce, that seems a bit overscaled. What's the resolution of the

[Bug 1440446] Re: Keyboard does not respond/scrambled video

2015-04-14 Thread descending3rds
Christopher,

I have some more information. As stated in the initial bug report, the latest
kernel (3.13.0-48-generic) with KMS enabled gets me to the password prompt for
decrypting my root, and the graphics appear to be ok, but the keyboard/mouse do
not respond.
On a hunch, I rebooted with this kernel, disconnecting the keyboard until after
the password prompt. Upon reconnection,
I am able to use the keyboard, and the root successfully decrypts, but again
the boot stalls before getting
to the login screen. In this case, however, I am able to ssh into a shell and
get access to more detailed information which may help with diagnosing the
failure of KMS in relation to the radeon driver. I attach Xorg.0.log and the
output of dmesg.

** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log and dmesg

[Bug 1432843] Re: Lubuntu failed to boot

2015-04-14 Thread Kamilion
I've spent some more time in tracking this down.

If you have a video adapter that is 3D capable and supports KMS, such as
the aforementioned AMD E350 APU, you shouldn't have any issues. IF
you're running some... older hardware, then this might bite you.

Here's the change that made this occur:
http://files.sllabs.com/files/long-term/screenshots/kamikazi/vmware-broken-for-lubuntu-and-this-is-the-culprit-commit.jpg

On march 16th, xserver-xorg-video-all was moved from Depends to
Recommends in the xserver-xorg package.

This bug happens to us for two reasons:
One: lubuntu's seed specifies no-follow-recommends.
Two: We do not have an explicit dependency on xserver-xorg-video-all.

I propose that an explicit dependency is added in either lubuntu's seed,
or in one of the metapackages, to follow suit with the rest of the
crowd. They all have the packages installed, one way or another, and we
are the odd-man-out.

ubuntu-mate seems to have added their explicit dependency in the vivid cycle.
edubuntu had the explicit dependency in utopic, so they never noticed.
Xubuntu does not have no-follow-recommends, so they never noticed.

The others (ubuntu+Unity, kubuntu, etc) are all primarily based on GL
compositors these days, and simply barf on the simple 2D cards that most
of these remaining packages support.

Specifically:
xserver-xorg-video-vmware
xserver-xorg-video-vesa
xserver-xorg-video-mga
xserver-xorg-video-cirrus
xserver-xorg-video-mach64
xserver-xorg-video-trident

MGA is required to support the Matrox G200e-compatible VGA adapter found in
Nuvoton and ASPEED baseboard management controllers on various supermicro X8
and X9 series motherboards.
Mach64 is required to support some older supermicro X7-series on-motherboard
VGA adapter.
cirrus and trident are required for some emulation environments like qemu.

Most of the pieces of actual hardware that these drivers were built for
are no longer used; but they are old enough to be the popular virtual
devices to emulate.

I am not sure if these drivers will ever be updated to support DRM or
KMS, or even if it is worth it for them to be changed, with the progress
on wayland+pixman.

This comment is found in several of the seeds, and no longer seems to apply as
of the march 16th commit to xserver-xorg.
# this includes xserver-xorg-xserver-xorg-{input|video}-* (no need to add
specific drivers manually)

Here is my factual corroboration of the above set of opinions.

[Bug 1432843] Re: Lubuntu failed to boot

2015-04-14 Thread Kamilion
Here's an *UNOFFICIAL* ISO based on beta2 (I built it on march 30th) with the
packages corrected.
You may use it to test to see if the specific fix I've played with will work on
other people's hardware.
http://files.sllabs.com/files/long-term/downloads/isos/kamikazi-15.04-beta2-amd64.iso

Your milage may very, do not rely on this ISO for production purposes, ONLY
TESTING!
IF you're gonna install, use the official alternate ISOs instead and add the
xserver-xorg-video-all package (and it's dependencies!) before rebooting.

If it breaks, you are advised to keep both pieces.

[Bug 1443771] Re: Fai packages are not updated

2015-04-14 Thread Morty
The problem is a lack of maintainers. Someone needs to package and test it for
Ubutu.
Currently I'm maintaining a ppa that is coherent with upstream [1], yet
adjustments to the config must be made to get it working [2]. This mainly
applies to small changes like adjusting the sources.list and packages that have
different names.
I started working on a generic solution to allow upsteam to support ubuntu out
of the box[3], but unfortunately, up to now, there was little response.

[Bug 1443764] Re: Black screen of death: system suddenly stopped working soon after upgrade to kernel 3.16.0.34-generic

2015-04-14 Thread pramathesh ambasta
It happened again!

I rebooted and I was working with not problems. Then I plugged in my
external drive to my 4-port hub and started running backintime-gnome. A
few seconds later the BSOD appeared again. It said that there was a
kernel panic and an unhandled exception in one of the interrupts. Also
some message about usb-ehcd (?).

I hard rebooted again. This time I have attached my external drive to a
USB port *on* my laptop. No problem so far!

Could it be due to the 4-port hub then? Maybe!

Please note that the 4-port hub is still attached to the computer and an
external keyboard is plugged into it. So I am guessing that attaching
the seagate drive to the port creates the problem.

[Bug 1384342] Re: kernel messages intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips correlate to compiz hang

2015-04-14 Thread Øyvind Stegard
I experience this at least once per day on a Ubuntu 14.04-installation
with LTS hardware enablement upgrade to kernel 3.16 (and newer Xorg
components). Typically, full screen video playback will suddenly freeze
(audio continues to play). At that point I must switch to VT 1, which
takes about a minute to happen, and then back to VT 7, to unfreeze the
desktop. The error in the kernel log does not appear immediately, but
rather after having switched to VT 1
(intel_crtc_wait_for_pending_flips+0x171/0x180). Typically, the app that
was playing video will crash.

System (Shuttle-based HTPC) uses an Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3225 CPU and
integrated graphics:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen
Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)

Happened with all 3.16 kernel releases up to 3.16.0-34-generic so far.

[Bug 1443774] [NEW] Horizontal scrolling is backwards

2015-04-14 Thread Ryan Finnie
Public bug reported:

Don't know where to report this specifically, sorry.

In native gnome applications (file manager, gedit, etc), scrolling
horizontally via Trackpoint middle-button scrolling is backwards:

* Middle button + trackpoint move up = scroll up (expected)
* Middle button + trackpoint move down = scroll down (expected)
* Middle button + trackpoint move left = scroll right (backwards)
* Middle button + trackpoint move right = scroll left (backwards)

same as #1443229.

I investigate the source code of indicator-sound, and find that in
src/service.vala:

var env = Environment.get_variable (DESKTOP_SESSION);
string cmd;
if (env == xubuntu || env == ubuntustudio)
 cmd = pavucontrol;
else

I think you would support more desktop environment such as XFCE by
adding  || env == xfce

[Bug 1414647] Re: Touchpad recognized as PS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse on ASUS X555L

2015-04-14 Thread Pilot6
Cristopher, it is not only one commit in 4.0. All Mathias Gottschlag commits
fix the issue for all Asus models.
My patch includes them all.
Unfortunately vivid uses systemd and dkms is loaded after psmouse. That's why
native psmouse.ko is loaded and module needs to be restarted to use the patched
one. But trusty with linux-generic-lts-vivid works perfect. This is a good
workaround till next Ubuntu release. But it would be good to sort out the
systemd issue.

The patch you point to was never applied to Ubuntu packages. Even more,
we have reverted it in all our releases.

The proper fix to this bug on ARM is in binutils:

Dear binutils maintainers: do you think it will be possible to backport

minimum is apparently 675 pixels, before borders from window manager.

icons also expand into the new space, so the rightmost rows can end up
off-screen.

reset by using a path that avoids folders with names that are too long,
either before or after the current folder.

[Bug 1440254] Re: Recent update broke XVideo/XCB output for h264

2015-04-14 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
tl;dr: You cannot use XVideo output via VDPAU decoder.

If you want to use the VDPAU decoder, you really really should use the
VDPAU output (or leave output to auto). Otherwise, use OpenGL. XVideo
cannot handle picture buffer padding and subpicture blending and is
generally considered deprecated by Xorg developers.

Alternatively, disable VDPAU decoding.

Sorry but this is wontfix as far as I am concerned.

[Bug 797485] Re: Status Bar Covers File Name at Bottom

2015-04-14 Thread Misaki
I don't feel like commenting on the Bugzilla bug report, which states that . . .
blockquoteWe will remove the floating bar after releasing 3.16, so probably
this won't be need at all./blockquote

. . . but this could be fixed by increasing the vertical scrollable size
of the window when the last row is selected.

The vertical size already increases based on the length of file names in
the last row, this would just be an extension of that. The comment on
Bugzilla also does not say what they are replacing the floating bar
with. Being able to see the size of a file, without having file size
always enabled at default zoom level, using just a single click is
useful and it shouldn't go away.

Alt-enter is not a replacement because it takes longer, and not everyone
has a fast computer. The lag it takes to open the properties window also
seems to scale with the number of items in the folder.

That's an excellent point. Is there another term we could use, then,

passwords in mobile interfaces generally
http://www.lukew.com/ff/entry.asp?1941, if we just make it a plain-
text field people may freak out.

2015-04-14 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Specification updated.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Networking?action=diffrev2=259rev1=258

** Changed in: network-manager (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed = Triaged

** Description changed:

  Steps:
  * connect to a password-protected WiFi network
  * suspend the phone
  * turn the WiFi off or leave the network's covered area
  * resume the phone

  Expected:
  * phone is connected via a GSM data connection

  Current:
  * phone is connected via a GSM data connection
  * there is a WiFi password dialog displayed for a network that isn't in range
any more (and for which the password is known)

+ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Networking#wi-fi-authenticating: Regardless
+ of the dialog variation, if it is still open when the network stops
+ being available — for example, if the network is no longer in range, or
+ if you switch into Flight Mode — the commit buttons should be replaced
+ by the centered text “Network no longer available”, all the dialog’s

[Bug 1443849] [NEW] Copying a line with full-width character at end adds a space

2015-04-14 Thread Misaki
Public bug reported:

If a full-width character, such as a Chinese character, starts at the
last column of a line, it is moved to the start of the next line. The
last column is then displayed as being empty. However, if that line is
selected using the mouse and copied using shift-ctrl-C, or simply using
middle-click paste, a space is added to the line at that location.

A common place where this can occur is in filenames.

I assume this is a bug in gnome-terminal, and not bash, but I'm not
entirely sure.

[Bug 996906]

I've found that 16000 buffer time with 4000 period time doesn't underrun
while if I change the period time to 1000 or 2000 it underruns pretty
quickly. Lower buffer times underrun regardless of the period time it
seems.

This bug fix release fixes a few critical issues with CRUSH. The most
important addresses a bug in feature bit enforcement that may prevent
pre-hammer clients from communicating with the cluster during an upgrade.
This only manifests in some cases (for example, when the 'rack' type is in
use in the CRUSH map, and possibly other cases), but for safety we
strongly recommend that all users use 0.94.1 instead of 0.94 when
upgrading.

There is also a fix in the new straw2 buckets when OSD weights are 0.

We recommend that all v0.94 users upgrade.

* crush: fix divide-by-0 in straw2 (#11357 Sage Weil)
* crush: fix has_v4_buckets (#11364 Sage Weil)
* osd: fix negative degraded objects during backfilling (#7737 Guang Yang)

[Bug 1407907] Re: [phone] Leaving WiFi coverage often leads to the password dialog being displayed indefinitely

2015-04-14 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Oops, I got that wrong. This doesn't apply to the dialog for connecting
to a hidden network, because we don't know whether it's in range until
we try connecting to it. Specification updated again.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Networking?action=diffrev2=260rev1=259

** Description changed:

  Steps:
  * connect to a password-protected WiFi network
  * suspend the phone
  * turn the WiFi off or leave the network's covered area
  * resume the phone

  Expected:
  * phone is connected via a GSM data connection

  Current:
  * phone is connected via a GSM data connection
  * there is a WiFi password dialog displayed for a network that isn't in range

[Bug 952108] Re: [Precise] Nautilus: memory leak

2015-04-14 Thread Misaki
I don't know if there are multiple memory leaks, but I am reporting on
this one. The Bugzilla report is not relevant to my particular version
as one comment on Bugzilla says this:

Obviously also related to wcslen so correctly closed as NOTABUG in
Nautilus because it is not a bug in Nautilus.

wcslen is described as Get wide string length. Returns the length of
the C wide string wcs. This is the number of wide characters between
...

So while the Bugzilla report as marked as RESOLVED DUPLICATE, I am reporting a
new issue.

Steps to replicate:

1) Open a folder with many image files.
2) Change to list view.
3) zoom to maximum size, it's faster this way but still happens at normal size.
4) Scroll up and down.

Result, nautilus will use more memory.

The fact that it leaks memory faster at a higher zoom level indicates
that it isn't related to the length of strings, but rather has to do
with images somehow.

This doesn't happen in icon view. What does happen in icon view, if you
zoom to maximum size, is that nautilus temporary uses more memory while
it caches higher-resolution thumbnails it generates, possibly only if
the existing thumbnails aren't large enough. But most or all of this
memory is freed when you reload the folder or navigate away. This
doesn't happen with the memory from this leak. Memory usage does go down
slightly, like for me it just went from ~830 MiB or something to 780
when I went from list view to icon view, but when I did this after
zooming in icon view, it went from ~230 to ~60 MiB.

When I was testing this before, it seemed like the memory didn't leak
until you had scrolled far enough; just scrolling a bit, like half a
page on normal zoom, didn't seem to cause a leak even when repeated. But
using a high zoom makes it easy enough to replicate that details like
that shouldn't matter.

In fact, simply increasing the zoom level could cause a memory leak. I
just did that, without scrolling, and watched memory usage go from ~780,
where I was before, up to 975 MiB. After returning to normal zoom and
refreshing, memory went down to ~914. After repeating the process, over
1 GiB.

At normal size, in list view, scrolling down to the bottom of 342 images
and then back up to the top causes Nautilus to use about 20 MiB more
memory, each time you do it. In icon view, doing this has no noticeable
effect. However, changing to list view, and then changing back to icon
view, with no other actions taken, does cause memory to increase by
about 6 MiB each time I do it.

New thumbnail creation is probably happening because there is high CPU
use; it's possible it's not caching thumbnails in list view., or caching
a limited amount or number and not freeing memory after it decides a
thumbnail is no longer cached. At largest zoom, each image was adding
1.3 MiB of memory to Nautilus when I pressed down once; same thing if I
pressed 'home' and 'end' repeatedly.

I'm using Nautilus 3.10.1, with Ubuntu 14.10.

[Bug 996906]

2015-04-14 Thread Rkfg
Created attachment 115003
Syslog with debug info

Here's my full syslog. First I started PA with:
default-fragments = 9
default-fragment-size-msec = 2

So the buffer was 800 frames, I couldn't get it to be 768 to have
exactly 16 ms latency. So it was 18 ms. I had no errors in dmesg while
using value of 11 for xrun_debug. Then I set params to 4 fragments of 1
ms each and had errors.

enable_msi=0 didn't help IIRC, neither did position_fix. But I'll try
again.

[Bug 996906]

2015-04-14 Thread Raymond
(In reply to rkfg from comment #26)
So I've bought a laptop with VIA sound as well and it also have
skips/stutters. I worked around it on both systems with these steps:

 1) in /etc/pulse/default.pa added tsched=0:
 load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0

 2) to reduce latency set in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf:
 default-fragments = 4
 default-fragment-size-msec = 1

The final latency is a product of these numbers, 1*4 == 4 ms which is
acceptable. The number of fragments should be at least 2 so the least
 latency possible is 2*1 == 2 ms. I don't know if there's a real difference
between 4 fragments of 1 ms each or 2 fragments of 2 ms each. Try some
experimenting. At least now I don't have latency increase and sound doesn't
skip on pavucontrol launch, though it still skips on LMMS launch.

are there any difference when using four periods or two periods ?

 1ms at 44100 Hz has 44.1 frames

[Bug 996906]

2015-04-14 Thread Rkfg
So I've bought a laptop with VIA sound as well and it also have
skips/stutters. I worked around it on both systems with these steps:

1) in /etc/pulse/default.pa added tsched=0:
load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0

2) to reduce latency set in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf:
default-fragments = 4
default-fragment-size-msec = 1

The final latency is a product of these numbers, 1*4 == 4 ms which is
acceptable. The number of fragments should be at least 2 so the least
latency possible is 2*1 == 2 ms. I don't know if there's a real
difference between 4 fragments of 1 ms each or 2 fragments of 2 ms each.
Try some experimenting. At least now I don't have latency increase and
sound doesn't skip on pavucontrol launch, though it still skips on LMMS
launch.

Based on the comments' content and timestamps here, it looks to me that
no one in PA team really cares about HDA Intel cards which are the most
popular cards. And if PA performs badly with them out of the box it
hurts PA's face, no matter who's to blame actually. Plus, pure ALSA
works fine or doesn't work at all, usually.

[Bug 996906]

2015-04-14 Thread Rkfg
I don't know if it's related but there's no error messages in dmesg if I
run PA without tsched=0. Though in this case skips are pretty audible
and the fragment size and their number aren't respected. Even worse,
latency grows over time with each skip and becomes unbearable. With
tsched=0 I can at least get it fixed. I also have skips when PC is under
load (Java compiling, tabs reloading at the same time etc.). PA says
it's working in realtime mode so these userland processes should not
interfere. It reports in its log that it's the ALSA underrun, not the
application's one. So I don't know who's to blame.

Why does period size lack 4 bytes to be exactly 1 second long?

[Bug 1443809] [NEW] Failed thumbnail check not working properly

2015-04-14 Thread Misaki
Public bug reported:

This is related to the gnome-thumbnailer code which is part of Nautilus.
However, I don't know enough about programming to fix it myself.

If a failed thumbnail exists for a file, or specifically a universal
resource identifier, Nautilus will not try to create a valid thumbnail
for it, unless a non-failed thumbnail also exists for that URI/path.

Steps to replicate:

1) Create a new, blank document named image.jpg
2) make sure the failed thumbnail has been created, such as by restarting
nautilus with 'nautilus --quit'
3) navigate back to that folder, rename or delete the blank file, and rename
another image to image.jpg.

Result: no thumbnail will be created for the image.

When I was checking the thumbnail code for an unrelated issue (256x256
thumbnails take up too much space as PNG, sometimes larger than original
file), I also saw enough to be able to investigate this issue a little.
In the code for Nautilus, or gnome-thumbnailer, that I looked at, it
appeared that the code was doing a check to see if the failed thumbnail
was valid.

That is, if the modification time of the file as recorded in the PNG
Chunk data does not match, it probably shouldn't count as a match for
the file. But either it is incorrectly matching, or something else is
wrong.

While testing for an unrelated issue that seemed like it might no longer
exist, I found that as Firefox saves an item by creating a placeholder
and then saving the actual file using a .part suffix (unless changed in
options probably), it leads to this bug.

[Bug 1310854] Re: banshee crashes when launching

2015-04-14 Thread Chow Loong Jin
Timothy, it looks like you're hitting an issue with the following file
as per the log:

[17 Debug 21:16:07.446] GStreamer running beat detection on
/home/tim/Music/christmas/15 Santa Claus Is Coming To Town 2001-12-16.mp3
banshee: BPMDetect.cpp:134: soundtouch::BPMDetect::BPMDetect(int, int):
Assertion `2048 decimateBy * 256' failed.

Karl, look for similar lines inside the output of banshee --debug and
check the sample rate of the file mentioned in your case. The
calculation for decimateBy seems to be sample rate divided by 1000, so
if you give it a file with a sample rate too low, soundtouch will crash.

** Summary changed:

- banshee crashes when launching
+ Banshee crashes when attempting to calculate BPM of files with sample rate
less than 8000 Hz
