[Bug 1459167] Re: Intel 3165 NGW combo needs new firmware
We can consider bumping the firmware version reported by the kernel, but we need to be sure that it's going to work correctly. In this case it's upstream commit 560ba3e6f4ca31ff884fb238a16032e0e9c5814a which bumps the API number but there are a number of commits preceding this related to how the driver interacts with the firmware. Simo Go ahead an propose the patch you are thinking on. Best! On Monday, June 29, 2015, Simo Punnonen simo.punno...@f-secure.com wrote: is the lo_name which gets stored in the loop_info structure actually required to be an actual file path or is it enough to be an arbitrary string identifier? If it doesn't have to be a file path, could it be for instance a sha1 hash of the provided path? That fits into 40 chars and is relatively fast to calculate. A sha1 identifier would make it really hard to collide with other loop device identifiers _unless_ you pass and use the same relative image path in two separate instances (which is also an existing problem). Alternatively it would be nice if the lo_name identifier wasn't actually based on path but some unique property of the mounted file, that way you would only need to point to an image, regardless of the path and kpartx could find if that specific image is mounted or not. -- You received this bug notification because you are a bug assignee. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1469143 Title: kpartx -d fails with image paths longer than 63 characters Status in multipath-tools package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in multipath-tools source package in Precise: New Status in multipath-tools source package in Trusty: New Status in multipath-tools source package in Utopic: New Status in multipath-tools source package in Vivid: New Bug description: $ apt-show-versions multipath-tools multipath-tools:amd64/vivid 0.4.9-3ubuntu12 uptodate Reproduce: Mount an image from a path longer than 63 chars succeeds: $ sudo kpartx -av asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12asdf13/disk.img add map loop0p1 (252:0): 0 409600 linear /dev/loop0 2048 add map loop0p2 (252:1): 0 2 linear /dev/loop0 411648 add map loop0p5 : 0 819200 linear /dev/loop0 413696 add map loop0p6 : 0 819200 linear /dev/loop0 1234944 add map loop0p7 : 0 819200 linear /dev/loop0 2056192 add map loop0p8 : 0 1316864 linear /dev/loop0 2877440 but dismounting fails: $ sudo kpartx -dv asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12asdf13/disk.img strace shows that the parameter on the dismount appears to get cut at 63 chars: ioctl(3, DM_LIST_VERSIONS, 0x15b89b0) = 0 stat(asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12asdf13/disk.img, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=2147483648, ...}) = 0 stat(/dev/loop0, {st_mode=S_IFBLK|0660, st_rdev=makedev(7, 0), ...}) = 0 open(/dev/loop0, O_RDONLY)= 4 ioctl(4, LOOP_GET_STATUS, {number=0, offset=0, flags=0, name=asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12a, ...}) = 0 close(4)= 0 stat(/dev/loop1, {st_mode=S_IFBLK|0660, st_rdev=makedev(7, 1), ...}) = 0 open(/dev/loop1, O_RDONLY)= 4 ioctl(4, LOOP_GET_STATUS, {number=0, offset=0, flags=0, name=asfd1asdf2asdf3asdf4asdf5asdf6asfd7asdf8asdf9asf10asdf11asdf12a, ...}) = -1 ENXIO (No such device or address) if the path is 63 chars or less, the dismount also succeeds. [Bug 1468102] Re: rc.local output does not go to console
This bug was fixed in the package systemd - 221-1ubuntu2 --- systemd (221-1ubuntu2) wily; urgency=medium * Disable test-netlink during package build, fails on some buildds. systemd (221-1ubuntu1) wily; urgency=medium * Merge with Debian unstable. Remaining Ubuntu changes: - Hack to support system-image read-only /etc, and modify files in /etc/writable/ instead. - Keep our much simpler udev maintainer scripts (all platforms must support udev, no debconf). - initramfs init-top: Drop scsi_wait_scan and udevadm settle, we do that in a more sensible way with wait-for-root. - initramfs init-bottom: If LVM is installed, settle udev, otherwise we get missing LV symlinks. Workaround for LP #1185394. - Add debian/udev.lvm2.init: Dummy SysV init script to satisfy insserv dependencies to lvm2 which is handled with udev rules in Ubuntu. - Add debian/udev.lvm2.service to avoid running the dummy lvm2 init script. - Provide shutdown fallback for upstart. (LP: #1370329) - debian/extra/ifup@.service: Additionally run for auto class. We don't really support allow-hotplug in Ubuntu at the moment, so we need to deal with auto devices appearing after /etc/init.d/networking start already ran. (LP: #1374521) Also run ifup in the background during boot, to avoid blocking network.target. (LP: #1425376) - ifup@.service: Drop dependency on networking.service (i. e. /etc/init.d/networking), and merely ensure that /run/network exists. This avoids unnecessary dependencies/waiting during boot and dependency cycles if hooks wait for other interfaces to come up (like ifenslave with bonding interfaces). (LP: #1414544) - Add Get-RTC-is-in-local-time-setting-from-etc-default-rc.patch: In Ubuntu we currently keep the setting whether the RTC is in local or UTC time in /etc/default/rcS UTC=yes|no, instead of /etc/adjtime. (LP: #1377258) - Put session scopes into all cgroup controllers. This makes unprivileged user LXC containers work under systemd. (LP: #1346734) - systemctl: Don't forward telinit u to upstart. This works around upstart's Restart() always reexec'ing /sbin/init on Restart(), even if that changes to point to systemd during the upgrade. This avoids running systemd during a dist-upgrade. (LP: #1430479) - Drop hwdb-update dependency from udev-trigger.service, which got introduced in v219-stable. This causes udev and plymouth to start too late and isn't really needed in Ubuntu yet as we don't support stateless systems yet and handle hwdb.bin updates through dpkg triggers. This can be dropped again with initramfs-tools 0.117. - Lower Breaks: to plymouth version which has the udev inotify fix in Ubuntu. - Lower apparmor Breaks: to the Ubuntu version that dropped $remote_fs. - Change systemd-sysv's conflicts to upstart-sysv. (LP: #1422681) Upgrade fixes, keep until 16.04 LTS release: - systemd Conflicts/Replaces/Provides systemd-services. - Remove obsolete systemd-logind upstart job. - Clean up obsolete /etc/udev/rules.d/README. * systemd.postinst: Migrate mountall specific fstab options to standard util-linux nofail option. systemd (221-1) unstable; urgency=medium * New upstream release 221: - Fix persistent storage links for Xen devices. (LP: #1467151) - Drop all backported patches and port the others to new upstream release. - debian/rules: Drop workarounds for broken 220 tarball, 221 is fine. [ Michael Biebl ] * initramfs hook: Stop installing 55-dm.rules, 64-md-raid.rules, 60-persistent-storage-lvm.rules and 60-persistent-storage-dm.rules. The mdadm, lvm2 and dmsetup package provide their own udev hooks nowadays to make sure their udev rules files are installed into the initramfs. Having the copy rules at two places is confusing and makes debugging harder. * Make it possible to skip building udeb packages via DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noudeb. [Bug 1467151] Re: 60-persistent-storage.rules fails to create by-uuid links to Xen virtual disks (xvd)
This allows quicker builds for local testing and is benefical for derivatives that don't use d-i. * Install API documentation for libudev and libsystemd in their respective packages. Both libraries use man pages now, so we need to be explicit about what is installed where. Re: [Bug 1469143] Re: kpartx -d fails with image paths longer than 63 characters
[Bug 1224756] Re: Pulseaudio should integrate with trust-store
** Description changed: Currently the 'audio' policy group allows access to pulseaudio which allows apps to use the microphone and eavesdrop on the user. Pulseaudio needs to be modified to use trust-store, like location-service does. Integrating with trust-store means that when an app tries use the microphone via pulseaudio, pulseaudio will contact trust-store, the trust-store will prompt the user (Foo wants to use the microphone. Is this ok? Yes|No), optionally cache the result and return the result to pulseaudio. In this manner the user is given a contextual prompt at the time of access by the app. Using caching this decision can be remembered the next time. If caching is used, there should be a method to change the decision in settings. Targeting to T-Series for now, since the trust-store is not in a reusable form yet. Original description: David and the security team (inspired by an observation from Rick) discussed that when recording, pulseaudio should somehow unobtrusively show the user that it is recording. The easiest thing to do would be for pulseaudio to alert indicator-sound which would then turn its icon red (similar to indicator-message turning blue with new messages). Marking 'high' because apps with access to pulseaudio can currently eavedrop on users. If the app is allowed to do networking (the default for apps), then it can ship that information off to a server somewhere. Note 1, the alert to indicator-sound must happen via the out of process pulseaudio server and not the confined app itself to be effective. Note 2, we should consider how to enforce this for foreground apps only. Application lifecycle should probably handle this for 13.10 (apps are suspended if not in foreground or if the screensaver is on), but we don't want an app on the converged device to record in the background when the user isn't paying attention. Example eavesdropping attack: start recording only when the screensaver is on (perhaps inhibiting the screensaver during recording would be enough). + + https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AccountPrivileges#Phone: On the phone, if an + app tries to access your ... microphone ... or video recording, this + should be subject to permission. “Video recording” should be separate + from “Camera” so that an app does not need two permissions when + recording video, one for the camera and one for the microphone. [Bug 728733] Re: fan only works when my acer 5315 is booted then stops
colin-king: I have not yet heard of thermald, will try it out after this comment. First I have new (and to me, confusing) information. To run apport-collect, i first booted it *without* acpi=off nolapic so it has wi-fi (but no fan). After it finished booting, I put it to suspend to let it cool down a bit (it already passed 70°C after loading X). When I woke it up, the fan worked! Two reboots confirm this behaviour; If you load it up to X without the fan, press Power button (to get the menu which allows you to suspend), suspend it, and then wake it up, the fan starts and correctly scales with temperature. A stress --cpu 3 gets it to 69-70 °C, and the fan gets really loud but it keeps the cpu at that temperature. If you CTRL-C the stress, it cools down to around 58°C within one second or so and then the fan slows down. - Now to the apport-collect I was asked to run: It told me that it would be better to spawn a new bug report with apport-bug (maybe marking it as duplicate) instead of sending data to this one. Should I listen to its recommendation? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/728733 Title: fan only works when my acer 5315 is booted then stops To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+bug/728733/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1469143] Re: kpartx -d fails with image paths longer than 63 characters
is the lo_name which gets stored in the loop_info structure actually required to be an actual file path or is it enough to be an arbitrary string identifier? If it doesn't have to be a file path, could it be for instance a sha1 hash of the provided path? That fits into 40 chars and is relatively fast to calculate. A sha1 identifier would make it really hard to collide with other loop device identifiers _unless_ you pass and use the same relative image path in two separate instances (which is also an existing problem). Alternatively it would be nice if the lo_name identifier wasn't actually based on path but some unique property of the mounted file, that way you would only need to point to an image, regardless of the path and kpartx could find if that specific image is mounted or not. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to multipath-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1469143 Title: kpartx -d fails with image paths longer than 63 characters To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/multipath-tools/+bug/1469143/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 728733] Re: fan only works when my acer 5315 is booted then stops
Hello everyone, a friend brought me an Aspire 5315 with an Ubuntu installed, which shows the exact same symptoms as the original poster (It just turns off after a while and gets really hot, but the fan doesnt work), so I can confirm this bug still exists in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Since the bug has not been closed I post to this bug, I hope that's allright. I have spent a lot of time hitting the words aspire 5315 fan linux into various search engines and have come up with the following information, which seem accurate: (1) The Fan on this particular laptop is normally controlled by a (windows only) software called e-fan control. (2) If the temperature rises too high, the mainboard/BIOS turns off power to save the system from heat death (this works even without the fan-control software running). (3) A BIOS Update fixes this for some users, although BIOS updates can brick the system, so I have not tried one yet. (4) There are other bug tickets on Launchpad, but they have been closed invalid: #182929 #500090 #618209 (5) The bug ticket #579665 has been closed as fix released as of kernel 3.2.0-2-486. Since the problem still occurs, this may be a regression. If someone can tell me how I should install that kernel version, I will try to verify that. Now towards my own testing: 1. When you turn on the computer (BIOS splash screen or pressing buttons in BIOS), the fan starts running. 2. It stays on while you're in GRUB. 3. If you load memtest86 from grub, the fan stays on and turns itself up and down, the system ran multiple passes of memtest without issues. 4. While GRUB loads the linux kernel into memory, the fan stays on. (this can be most easily tested by booting from usb, since it only loads with usb1.1 speed and thus takes a lng time) 5. When the linux kernel takes over, the fan turns off. (This is what makes me believe it is a linux-specific issue, while the board/BIOS might be allright). The system will continue working for a while, until it turns off (Mainboard's safety switch) I was able to get through an ubuntu 14.04.2 amd64 installtion by not using an internet connection and clicking the default settings as fast as possible to get to the reboot before it went too hot. With the system installed, I have done the following experiments: If you boot with the parameter acpi=off the linux kernel panics within 1 second or so, but at least the fan stays on : ) If you boot with the parameters acpi=off nolapic or acpi=off noapic the system correctly boots up, fan works (!) and starts getting faster when a stress --cpu 3 process gets the coretemp to 69°C. Only downside of acpi=off nolapic is that wifi doesn't work at all when you boot the laptop like that (It works fine booted normally, so I suppose the card is allright) It would be really nice if the computer could run its fan *and* the wifi card at the same time. If you can tell me anything I can try to help diagnose the problem, I'm happy to try it out. (although I'd like to avoid things that can brick it if it turns off at a bad time, like the bios update). Since the laptop has no user data on it yet, re-installing is no problem either. ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/728733 Title: fan only works when my acer 5315 is booted then stops To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+bug/728733/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

As said, it's a worst-case scenario. I expect 99% of users to enable 2-5 languages and not be a problem. But, it is possible for someone to enable every language. I see no reason to arbitrarily limit the users choice, they are smart enough to decide what is suitable to them. I've attached a screenshot of what it looks like, with 4 languages viewable, you should be able to see that it provides a quick convenient switch between languages without taking up much space. ** Attachment added: screenshot20150629_145421899.png https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-ui-toolkit/+bug/1465048/+attachment/4421961/+files/screenshot20150629_145421899.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1465048 Title: PageHeadSections does not scroll To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-ui-toolkit/+bug/1465048/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
