[Bug 1476900] Re: Backport Intel 8260 Wifi/BT firmwares

2015-07-22 Thread Seth Forshee
While the vivid kernel has some code to support Intel 8260, the highest
firmware API it supports is -12 whereas the first firmware Intel
released for this hardware is -13. Including the firmware in vivid isn't
going to help because the vivid kernel isn't going to use it.

2015-07-22 Thread Ciro Santilli 六四事件 法轮功
It is well known that GDB has many failing tests. The wiki says:
https://sourceware.org/gdb/wiki/TestingGDB

> One unfortunate characteristic of the GDB testsuite is that, even if
GDB is horribly broken, many tests will still pass. You can't have much
confidence that things are basically working with 356 failures. You
should look through gdb.log and work through a bunch of them to get a
feel for the state of things.

[Bug 1477052] Re: chroot with qemu-ppc64-static fails on x86

2015-07-22 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1477052/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you

[Bug 1477117] [NEW] obexd root is set to /tmp, should be /home/phablet

2015-07-22 Thread Jan Nekvasil
Public bug reported:

If You connect via bluetooth FTP to a Ubuntu Touch Phone (in my case BQ
Aquaris E4.5), You will end up browsing it's /tmp, which is pretty
confusing and not very useful to a normal user. You can change it with
editing /usr/share/dbus-1/services/obexd.service and
/usr/share/upstart/sessions/obexd.conf (probably only one of them is the
right one), adding --root=/home/phablet parameter after
/usr/lib/obexd/obexd and restart the device.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.04
Package: bluetooth-touch 0.3.1

[Bug 554307] Re: linux-boot-prober yields wrong uuid for kernel root parameter

2015-07-22 Thread V[i]ctor
Yes, the bug appears on 14.04 LTS release. The partition in question is
not mounted via /etc/fstab.

To understand what's going on I'd better give you blkid output with some
my comments:

$ blkid /dev/sda*
/dev/sda1: UUID="66ECBF91ECBF5A4F" TYPE="ntfs"
/dev/sda10: UUID="04db7581-6256-408c-969b-27847b90f5e3" TYPE="ext4" # Ubuntu
14.04, my main OS, all the scripts I run, I run here
/dev/sda2: UUID="425ec35d-cc19-438a-aa30-ea3b0beee6ae" TYPE="ext4" # /boot
partition for both Ubuntu systems
/dev/sda5: UUID="f728b87c-d0fa-4419-a55a-aee66dead3c4" TYPE="ext4" # old Ubuntu
10.04, I can't boot it because of the current bug (but I fixed grub.cfg later
on)
/dev/sda6: UUID="b862754b-5a40-4412-87ac-eb7e846be4bb" TYPE="ext4" # my /home
for both Ubuntus
/dev/sda7: UUID="e1eb1b01-8c1a-4237-85ec-e69255f2a73e" TYPE="ext4"
/dev/sda8: UUID="b30c59b6-fc31-4a06-b04b-a13d9f898c1c" TYPE="swap"
/dev/sda9: UUID="70EFAAAD68BA7261" TYPE="ntfs"

I also found that linux-boot-prober uses grub.cfg to get the data.

I ran it 3 times: without grub.cfg in /boot/grub/, with the grub.cfg
generated by update-grub script (which uses linux-boot-prober, that's
where this bug affects grub2 package) and with fixed by hand grub.cfg.
You can see all 3 outputs in the attached file. (I have partial russian
locale, so cyrillic с there stands for the word "with".)

You may also want to see my grub.cfg file before and after my fix. The
old one wasn't saved, so I regenerated it running update-grub several
times (it's a huge mess there right now). Both fixed one and
regenerated one are in attachment.

As far as I found out, linux-boot-prober parses grub.cfg assuming there
are no other operating systems which use the same /boot partition. When
it does so, it just finds all linux menuentries and prints all them out,
with root partitions from the corresponding menuentries.

So the actual bug is, linux-boot-prober prints out the wrong kernels
from grub.cfg, and the update-grub script uses this incorrect data from
linux-boot-prober to generate messed up grub.cfg. In the update-grub
script there is actually no bug, just not super-safe-checking-everything
behaviour, so I'll leave the bug from grub2 as a duplicate.

[Bug 1477105] [NEW] asterisk failed to start under systemd

2015-07-22 Thread god
Public bug reported:

Installed asterisk from repo on 15.04 x86_64: Version: 1:13.1.0~dfsg-1ubuntu2
When started automatically on boot it's failing - no binding to ports 5060 for
unknown reason.

Curiously when started manually (as root of course) asterisk is working
just fine. So I guess it's hairy and ugly /etc/init.d/asterisk mess to
blame and an ultimate fix would be to finally ship asterisk.service
instead.

But in a meantime I'm looking for workaround to make this work.

systemctl status is 'degraded' after boot.
systemctl status asterisk

[Bug 1475471] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2015-07-22 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From kn...@us.ibm.com 2015-07-22 11:43 EDT---
I have tried a couple different methods of setup, and both methods produced the
same results:

Method 1:
1. Successful DHCP install of Ubuntu 14.04.3 onto pole2lp1.
2. Installation forces reboot, and comes back to the login prompt, where I am
able to enter my chosen UID and log in.
3. Create password for root using sudo passwd root. (same internal pw)
4. issue reboot command as user after setting root.. (this is not part of my
instruction set, I just did it because I wanted to verify I could reboot and
log in as root)
5. The system reboots, and comes back to the login prompt, but does not get
past the UserID entry. Neither root nor chosen UID worked. It always stayed at
the user prompt after clearing the screen.
6. I have always had to reinstall to try to work around this. I Always
reinstall to the same device (mpath0). Sometimes the reinstall works, but it
is intermittent. Other users that have seen this may not be using an mpath
device.

Method 2: I got these directions from another IBMer when I started in LTE:
This is a snippet of the 1st few steps.
After OS installation and login: 1st I created the root pw as before, but
this time I did not reboot, simply logged off (exit) as 'USER', and then logged
back in as root. This worked. (These directions are for LTE, however in
reality I installed tools from kte)
1. Mount the /LTE folder from lte server
>mkdir /LTE
>mount lte:/LTE /LTE
2. Run setup general to install the useful packages and reboot the machine:
>/LTE/tools/setup general
>init 6

At the time I ran these steps, I did not know that the 'init 6' step
here would reboot the lpar. When it rebooted the lpar, It came back up
to the same fail as method 1. Could not get past the prompt for user
ID, even after multiple reboots.

I had to reinstall to get beyond this point again.

The next time I successfully installed (it took multiple attempts) and
was able to set the root PW and log in as root (no lpar reboot) I
skipped the 'init 6' step, and was able to setup and install the LTE
test suites, and successfully get the lpar into the active run. I have
still not rebooted this lpar since last Friday, and it is still running.
I am fairly certain that if I reboot it, it will hit the fail again.

So, the initial reboot after installation that is forced by the
installer works properly, and returns to the login prompt where I can
log in as the user I just created. At this point, it doesn't matter
whether or not I activate the root user. If I reboot the lpar after the
initial install completes and reboots once I hit this bug. So, I don't
think my method of activating root is the issue, as I have recently
discovered there are a couple of different methods of doing this.

Please let me know if you need any further details. Thanks.

[Bug 1033598] Re: the CAPTCHA challenge in Ubuntu Software Center is much too difficult to solve for a real human being

2015-07-22 Thread Csipak Attila
@Tom Peterson

"And when the problems with this approach are clearly articulated (thank
you, aarre), the official response focuses solely on ways to increase
the bug heat rather than on ways to actually solve the problem."

Dear Tom, what exactly makes you think that my response is "official" in
any sense?

FYI, let me tell you that I'm generally from the same breed of everyday Ubuntu
community member, just as you are. Except maybe that instead complaining and
blaming fellow users I:
- posted the original bug report 3 years ago,
- did some cleanup of duplicate bug reports,
- gave some tips for others on bug heat, increasing the likelihood of getting
this noticed by "official" maintainers.

BTW, did you ever consider subscription to bug mail?

While Aarre is completely right about the importance of this bug, I
don't really see how ranting and blaming others solves anything or
brings this bug closer to being noticed.

Also please note that so far, there's no official response for this bug
report. (Official meaning a statement originating from the maintainers
of this project.) It's just us talking and giving a hand to each other,
out of sheer altruism - y'know "community".

[Bug 1476736] Re: Crash in cairo-scaled-font.c:459: _cairo_scaled_glyph_page_destroy: Assertion `!scaled_font->cache_frozen' failed.

2015-07-22 Thread jpka
Yes, it is fonts related issue, as i can see now: i found a way to reproduce it.
1. Boot from live flash drive (i use 14.04.2 LTS 32-bit version for that)
2. Install 'gimp'
3. Enable Universe repos
4. Install 'gnome-tweak-tool'
5. Install 'xfonts-terminus'
(at this point, gimp will still run)
6. Run 'gnome-tweak-tool', select Fonts, and in 2nd selector from top, select
'Terminus 14'
Wait a bit when new font will apply.
Now, starting gimp, it will crash with error shown above.
Looks like it is not related with this particular font, because other mentioned
reports rarely related with this font.
It is not looks like problem with font package itself (possible bugs, etc),
because other software runs with it and looks properly.
On Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS, this bug does not exist.
Thanks.

[Bug 1124250] Re: Partially incorrect uid mapping with nfs4/idmapd/ldap-auth

2015-07-22 Thread Margarita Manterola
This bug affects Precise, but it's not marked so. Back in June, I had
mentioned that it was possible to make the keys permanent by using the
trusty versions of keyutils + libkeyutils1 + libnfsidmap2. This is now
not possible anymore with the latest kernel versions available on
Precise.

I understand that making the keys permanent is not actually a solution,
but right now, on Precise with the trusty-lts kernel the keys keep
getting expired and not renewed. This is wrong and needs to be fixed.

[Bug 914507] Re: Feature Request: special Browser window for logging in to WiFi Hotspots

2015-07-22 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Description changed:

+ Problem occurs with: Ubuntu, all versions
+ Does not occur with: Fedora 21 and later, elementary OS 0.3 and later, OS X
10.7 and later
+
Last year I travelled around a lot. And I saw that almost everywhere there
are WiFi Hotspots now: at airports, Hotels, train stations, public buildings
and in cafes.
These Hotspots normally redirect all traffic to a special IP address which
provides a Welcome page with a login form. Accessing this server with another
protocol does not work, which is not a problem for POP3, IMAP or SSH, but it is
a problem if you connect by https, because your browser will recognise the
wrong security certificate or the port is not even used (which is even better
in my opinion).
  1) So if I open a browser it automatically tries to open its Start page which
is https in my case (I use the HTTPS Everywhere plugin in my firefox). Because
it uses https, I will not be redirected to the login page and am waiting in
front of an empty page. Then I manually have to open a link which does not use
https and get redirected to the login page.
  2) Another annoying thing are other users who open a saved browser session.
All saved (http-)tabs will be redirected to the welcome page so that it does
not make any sense anymore to save the browser session.
  3) Firefox also sometimes does compatibily checks and plugin updates at start
time. These also fail when trying to login to a Hotspot network.

How can we solve this problem?

First, network manager should check if the connected wireless network is a
Hotspot network. This chan be done by a simple http request to a stable and
well-known page, for example http://gnome.org/netcheck which returns a known
token (something like "Yes, you are connected to the Internet").
  - If the token is returned, everything is fine and the user has connection
  - If it does not receive this token but a redirect, it should open a special
browser-window (not the default browser because of the reasons above) which
allows to log-in to the network before other internet applications are started.
  - In any other case, network manager could try another server (backup) or
stop probing.

For known wireless networks, network manager could also provide a
  setting to disable/autodetect/force hotspot login.

  : "Whenever Ubuntu
makes a new network connection, if 'Prompt whenever a new connection
requires Web login' is checked, it should perform HTTP and DNS checks
that the connection is valid. If it is not..."

[Bug 1033598] Re: the CAPTCHA challenge in Ubuntu Software Center is much too difficult to solve for a real human being

2015-07-22 Thread Tom Peterson
Aarre is completely correct. Fanatically clinging to bug heat as a
measure of the importance of solving this issue demonstrates a short-
sighted administrative rigidity that cannot fail to scare away new
users.

Aarre was also correct to describe this situation as a "Catch-22".
Anyone who has read Heller's classic novel will immediately recognize
the paradigm:

   1) I can't create an Ubuntu Single Sign-on account because the captchas are
impossible to get right in a reasonable number of efforts.
   2) Because I can't create an Ubuntu Single Sign-on account, I can't complain
about this in forums accessible only with an Ubuntu Single Sign-on account, nor
can I create a bug report. Why would anyone expect new users to be savvy or
invested enough to formally create a bug report anyway?
   3) Because the bug itself prevents the natural accumulation of "bug heat"
that would cause it to be resolved and because administrators insist on
slavish adherence to a prioritization mechanism that is clearly inapplicable in
this context, this issue has remained unaddressed for more than 3 years,
frustrating and turning away potential Linux converts by the dozens.

And when the problems with this approach are clearly articulated (thank
you, aarre), the official response focuses solely on ways to increase
the bug heat rather than on ways to actually solve the problem.

If I were a newcomer, eager to explore an exciting new path through
open-source solutions (and this is exactly what I am), I'd have to be
wondering by now whether this is the kind of forward-thinking, problem-
solving community of fully engaged users that I was hoping to find. And
I might give up and look elsewhere.

This happens if /usr/bin/python points to a Python 3 interpreter.

The gconf2 python scripts at /usr/sbin/gconf-schemas and /usr/bin

[Bug 1445442] Re: packaging problem with translations

Thanks for reporting this issue.

I see the same entries when lookging at the content of the package [1].
At the time of this writing, Debian unstable also has gnome-boxes

I find odd, because the package should have been synced from Debian and
rebuilt in Ubuntu.

At the moment, there's a new gnome-boxes package waiting in wily-

0 for Debian version after the dash.) I wonder whether that will have

[Bug 1445783] Re: please update libmtp to 1.1.9

2015-07-22 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu
better.

The latest packaged libmtp version in Ubuntu is 1.1.8-1ubuntu2. The
ubuntu-part of the version number means it has some Ubuntu-specific
patches and normally such packages require to merge new packages from
Debian. However, skimming the changelog [1], especially for 1.1.9-2 it
looks like this might have been integrated into the Debian package.

I've taken the liberty of assigning the person who did the latest patch
to this package; could you please check whether this package needs to be
merged or whether it could simply be synced? :)

[Bug 1443771] Re: Fai packages are not updated

2015-07-22 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for reporting.

The latest version packaged in Ubuntu at the moment is fai 3.4.8ubuntu5.
The ubuntu-part of the version number says that this package has some
Ubuntu-specific patches, which unfortunately means that any newer
release from Debian will need to be manually merged by someone.

[Bug 1422106] Re: Keyword argument should be used in translation strings

2015-07-22 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
I'm not quite sure I follow...

The original string is:
 Command '%s' from package '%s' (%s)
And the three %s will be replaced by the appropriate command name, package name
and main/universe/multiverse, respectively. So presumably the error message
about missing argument comes when if a translator leave any of these out.

Or.. are you saying you need more control over the arguments in order to
rearrange them, because the current order won't make sense in your
language?

[Bug 999109] Re: complete freeze of Ubuntu after some time using Java, wine, games (GL?)

2015-07-22 Thread victor
OK Thanks a lot to both Jonas and Christopher. You are very kind.

At the end there was a problem with nouveau. I did nothing but in an
upgrade nouveau and nividia propriertary drivers get meshed each other.
( I did not make any driver change).

There was also a problem with /etc/modprobe.d blacklisted drivers

Finally I succeed by reinstalling Xorg and removing all drivers and
reinstalling nvidia:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

Now seems not to get frozen randomly.

This kind of crashes ( not voluntary) are quite embarrassing.
I know nvidia proprietary drivers are a nightmare for our community hopefully
we will get rid of them.
Meanwhile please be careful with these upgrades, because leaves the PC unusable.

Best wishes and regards and thanks a lot once more.
Victor

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.

I've taken the liberty of merging this with bug 780623 since it is

[Bug 780623] Re: new version of dnstop 20121017

2015-07-22 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: dnstop

- See http://dns.measurement-factory.com/tools/dnstop/src/ for a new
- upstream version (tarball)
+ A newer release is available at
+ http://dns.measurement-factory.com/tools/dnstop/src/dnstop-20140915.tar.gz
+
+ Debian version is also (stuck) at 20120611-2
+
https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=dnstop&searchon=names&suite=all§ion=all
+
+ Concise list of changes since that version
+ (Ref: http://dns.measurement-factory.com/tools/dnstop/src/CHANGES)
+
+ 2014/09/12 Duane Wessels
+
+ Added 'new-gtlds' filter, which includes only queries for names
+ ending with one of the new (2013/2014) generic TLDs. This may
+ be useful to find hosts/servers using internal names which may
+ collide with new gTLDs once they become active. If you use
+ short (not fully qualified) names internally you may be uknownlying
+ relying on root (or other) name servers to return NXDOMAIN for
+ them. If so, "you're gonna have a bad time."
+
+ Along with this new feature, TLD lists are now hashed in the
+ code for faster lookups.
+
+ 2012/11/30 Duane Wessels
+
+ Added more entries to the table of known query type names (HINFO,
+ AFSDB, PX, SSHFP, NSEC3, NSEC3PARAM, TLSA, DLV).
+
+ 2012/10/15 Duane Wessels
+
+ The 'refused' filter only works on responses, which are not
+ processed by default. Now, if the 'refused' filter is specified,
+ dnstop will automatically process responses and ignore queries.

Please provide some background as to what you are doing here. Looks like it's
emulating a ppc env on x86 somehow but I'm not sure if anyone on the screen
team is familiar with this. You can provide some example of what the working
case is supposed to look like or just attach your test scenario to the bug.

I see you are running on the 3.13 kernel. Have you tried this on 3.16
(14.04.2) or 3.19 (14.04.3) kernels?

Is the x86 box running bare metal or is this itself running under KVM?

Hi, I am trying to chroot into filesystem of different architecture.
Below is are the working steps for arm arch
1) get a root fileystem of arm, from
https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/trusty/current/trusty-server-cloudimg-armhf.tar.gz,
 and extract it
2) install qemu-user-static
3) chroot preparations
Set TARGET_PATH to root of chroot
mount --bind /dev $TARGET_PATH/dev
mount --bind /dev/pts $TARGET_PATH/dev/pts
mount --bind /dev/shm $TARGET_PATH/dev/shm
mount --bind /proc $TARGET_PATH/proc
mount --bind /sys $TARGET_PATH/sys

copy cp /usr/bin/qemu-ppc* $TARGET_PATH/usr/bin/
4)chroot into the file system
chroot $TARGET_PATH

inside chroot, you should able to run any command, install packages

Following the above step, does not work for power.

The host mentioned in comment 1 is baremetal and the VM is running under kvm.
so the chroot is done in a ubuntu VM .

I checked this. 2g is still being used by Phone Coop for SMS at the
moment but they are phasing it out.

Can you clarify, is SIM2 a 2g only based on hardware i.e. a different
type than SIM1 ? Or did you just mean that was the setting on my phone
at the time ?

Re: [Bug 1465685] OTA4 SMS function now fails

2015-07-22 Thread LionelB
Apologies. I somehow read that as “have you contacted Phone Coop”.

No, I haven’t contacted BQ. It is 99.9% likely that the OTA triggered
the fault and basic functionality is fine because 3 is unaffected.

Phone Coop said that “if there is a signal, it should work” ...

[Bug 1477032] [NEW] Time & Date time zone chooser doesn't offer a full set of cities

2015-07-22 Thread Guy Harris
Public bug reported:

If I start the Time & Date chooser in 15.04, the "Time & Date" pane does
not let me to specify a city by typing its name into the "Location" box
(I can type a name, but it's not obvious how to make it select that
city), nor does it offer a drop-down list of cities in that box. If I
drag the "you are here" blob to the West Coast of the US, it puts "Los
Angeles" in the "Location" box, the fact that I'm currently in Palo
Alto, about 400 miles from Los Angeles, nonwithstanding.

The fact that the identifier, in the IANA tz database, for the tzdb zone
I'm in happens to have, in sequence, the characters 'A', "m', 'e', 'r',
'i', 'c', 'a', '/', 'L', 'o', 's', '_', 'A', 'n', 'g', 'e', 'l', 'e',
and 's' is irrelevant; the set of strings used for tzdb zone identifiers
is *not* to be used as a set of cities to offer an end user!

Please find a machine running OS X, fire up "System Preferences", select
the "Date & Time" item, and select the "Time Zone" pane in that item,
for an example of how a time zone selector *should* work. It's similar
to what Ubuntu 15.04 offers, but:

1) it uses OS X's location services (Core Location, etc.) to try to
find out where you're located, using, I think, Skyhook - you could
perhaps use GeoClue for this;

2) instead of a "Location" box into which you can type stuff without
an obvious effect, it offers a drop-down list of cities near the
location where you've placed the "you are here" blob - the map display
in OS X has "geonames.org" on it, so that might be where it gets the
list of nearby cities;

3) you can type in that box, and if it finds a matching city, it'll
move the "you are here" blob there (sadly, I tried typing "Weed" into
it, but it failed to find Weed, CA, although it could find Tustin,
Oxnard, Union City, and Redding).

OS X also lets you run in a mode where it uses the location services to
continuously update the current tzdb zone for the system, but *that*
required a fair bit of chainsaw work on localtime.c (I'm told by
somebody who should know that the notify(3) mechanism in OS X was
originally created to allow a running process to be informed that it
needs to change the current time zone, so even a dumb program in a for
loop doing "sleep(10)" followed by "now = time(NULL)" followed by
"printf("%s", ctime(&now));" will see the change - in fact, it just
*did*).

So please at least stop using the list of tzdb names as a list of cities
to show to the user; tzdb identifiers are really *not* something that
should be exposed to the vast majority of users (they should be exposed
only to nerds). The tzdb maintainers will thank you, as this should
significantly reduce the number of users who complain that the tzdb's
choice of city to use in the identifier is inappropriate because it's
not their city, or it's not the most important city, or whatever.

util-linux doesn't appear to include fdisk on 14.04.3; it only has
cfdisk and sfdisk. We checked on a Ubuntu 15.10 guest and it has a
separate fdisk binary in util-linux, so this looks like a bug in 14.04.3

[Bug 1461879] Re: Cannot recreate md1 if partitions (ie: md1p1, md1p2) detected

2015-07-22 Thread Igshaan Mesias
Hi,

I had exactly the same behavour with 14.04 if any pre-existing raids were
present.
Installer fails with: "partman-auto-raid: Error: incorrect directory for
/dev/mdXXX"

I can only confirm that wiping disks with dd gets you passed this,
however, using mdadm to zero the superblock instead may just work, I
have not tested this.

Kind Regards,

[Bug 1476705] Re: postscript printer hideously slow in some cases (pdftops)

2015-07-22 Thread cliddell
The problem, I suspect, is the way Cairo rights PDF files (the gmap.pdf
file you attached above was created by Cairo). The Cairo *always* writes
the page contents into one or more PDF transparency groups - even when
all the contents are really opaque.

The issue is that, due to the way PDF works (and PDF transparency in
particular) the only way to be sure that all the page contents are
opaque would be to pre-process each page, checking for non-opaque
content, and then re-interpret the page using the information gleaned in
the first pass - which would, frankly, result in an unacceptable
performance drop for the vast majority of PDF files.

Most interpreters I know will pre-scan the quickly accessible elements
of a PDF page, and if no transparency constructs are found, will then
elide the extra processing transparency requires. Unfortunately, those
easily accessible elements don't contain (or, at least, don't reliably
contain) the actual opacity information. So, in most cases I know, just
the existence of the transparency constructs means that extra processing
is enabled, regardless of the actual opacity values.

Now, secondly, Postscript cannot represent PDF transparency in high
level (vector etc) operations. So, the only way to get a visually
accurate representation of a PDF containing transparency in Postscript
is to "flatten" the transparency by rendering it to a sampled image -
and clearly, sampled images end up being larger than vector graphics.

Hence we have the result that basically every Cairo produced PDF will
convert to Postscript as one or more sampled images per page.

And that explains why the Postscript is so much larger than the PDF.

Now, looking at the Postscript file you posted, it *appears* that the
rendering for transparency flattening is being done at 1200dpi which is,
frankly, ridiculous for a couple of reasons. First is, your printer has
a maximum physical resolution of 600dpi (the ImageRET modes provide
enhanced quality, claimed to be equivalent to 2400 and, IIRC, 3600 dpi,
but the printer is still a 600 dpi printer). Secondly, our experience
with Ghostscript's Postscript output, is that many printers are much,
*much* faster at upsampling images than downsampling.

So, my first suggestion would be to poke around the CUPS dialogues
and/or the PPD, and see if you can drop the claimed resolution of the
printer to at most 600dpi and, frankly, I'd even try 300 dpi. As a rule
of thumb, in the printing world, it's generally claimed that dropping
continuous tone, sampled image resolution by 50% from the physical
resolution results in almost no visible loss of quality. Where that
falls down, in cases like this, is because there is text involved, and
the small details inherent in text shapes may well suffer visibly.

Another thing we've found with the Postscript output from Ghostscript is
that many printers are very, very slow at decompressing data, so if you
can find an option to avoid compressing image data, that *might* make a
difference - but that is highly printer dependent.

I'd like to take this opportunity to rant (again): this kind of thing is
the reason that PDF is such poor, poor choice as a print spool format.
PDF has a *hugely* rich imaging model, *far* more so than Postscript,
PCL5/PXL or any of the proprietary page description languages (PDL),
which means for almost any low/midrange PDL based printer, there is a
very high chance that the PDF content cannot be converted to a high
level, vector representation, and must be rendered and sent as sampled
images (bitmaps). Perhaps a PDF/A or PDF/X variant would be a better
choice..

And I'm sure someone will point out that more and more printers are
supporting direct PDF printing, but that really just moves the
bottleneck: PDF transparency is (over!) complex, and is extremely
processor and memory intensive. So a low/mid range printer, with limited
memory and processing power, is going to struggle to print a file like
these ones. In truth, many such PDF printers "get around" this by either
not supporting transparency at all, or supporting only relatively
trivial subset of the full PDF transparency model.

Also, with more and more applications integrating Cairo to do their PDF
output, with the transparency problems outlined above, the situation is
only set to get worse.

Anyway, as I said, look into adjusting the resolution, and possibly
compression settings, and let us know how you fare.

[Bug 1424199] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message()

2015-07-22 Thread dino99
An other crash case:

with Wily, some upgraded packages does not end with a crash. But each time a
package upgrade is calling libc6-bin (lastest called process seen inside the
install dialog box from synaptic) i'm getting a freeze for a few seconds then
crash with the same reported here.
Glancing at libc6-bin inside the archive, that package does not exist anymore
but Precise (but still exist in Debian Sid archive)
So that could be some script(s) calling it but not finding it indeed.

[Bug 1464064] Re: Ubuntu apt repos are not available via HTTPS

2015-07-22 Thread Robie Basak
This is not a -1, but I think it'd be useful to have some perspective
here, rather than just the "no HTTPS the sky is falling" view.

> HTTPS everywhere is now a best practice on the web, and through the US
government and among major service providers.

I don't agree with this as a justification. "HTTPS everywhere" has come
out of a specific need. The justifications for its implementation do not
automatically hold "everywhere", especially outside of web apps. That's
not to say that HTTPS shouldn't be implemented here, just that the
argument that "it has been justified elsewhere, therefore it is
justified here" is not a valid one, especially because in the other
cases no HTTPS means no protection, whereas we already use signed
packages. Thus this particular argument is hardly "compelling". The pros
and cons of HTTPS implementation for package repositories should be
considered on its own merits.

> * network attackers can't see what packages you're downloading and the
specific software versions, thus profiling the server and assisting the
targeting of vulnerabilities and zero-day attacks against it

The published packages have well known sizes, so I think attackers
probably can infer what an individual downloads based on size. That
doesn't mean that we should not have HTTPS, but rather that it should
not be assumed that HTTPS downloads of packages would automatically be
private.

If you really want privacy of the packages you download, it would be
more effective to operate a full local repository mirror.

> * a sophisticated attacker with possession of a compromised package
signing key can't leverage a "QUANTUM insert"-esque technique to
redirect to a malicious .deb

A "a compromised package signing key" sounds like a tall order to me.
Far harder than a compromised mirror private SSL key, since the former
doesn't need to be kept on machines with widespread exposure to the
world. I suppose there's no harm in being protected by both, though,
since the two would probably need to be compromised separately - though
I suspect that so many other attack vectors would be opened up by a
compromised packaging signing key that HTTPS to your mirror probably
won't help you anyway. For example, what about "flashplugin-installer"
(for those who have multiverse enabled) and its download of a binary
blob outside the usual packaging system, only verified by a
(package-)signed hash? If a packaging signing key were compromised,
you'd get little protection from an HTTPS apt repository without this
transfer also being on HTTPS.

> * an attacker able to passively sniff the network traffic would not be
able to use fingerprint techniques to find/identify servers installing
an exact set of packages specific to an environment the adversary is
searching for

Note the fingerprint-by-size issue above - I don't think HTTPS will help
you against sophisticated attackers here. Run a full local repository
mirror instead if you care about this.

> * it makes impersonating an apt repo (for example with the goal of
blocking people from receiving security updates) more difficult

Somewhat true I guess, though note that although I don't see it being
used, apt is capable of some level of protection for this by Release
files having expiry dates. See "Check-Valid-Until" in apt.conf(5) for
details. But impersonators would be able to get away with it for a
while, so an HTTPS mirror would improve this by informing users of the
failure immediately rather than after the expiry time.
