[Bug 1520751] Re: Kernel 4.2 does not detect external monitor

2015-11-29 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
David Abergel, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

As per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-
support/product/xps-13-9343-laptop/drivers/advanced an update to your
computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (A07). If you update to
this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it
address the issue?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the
output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Also, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible, and the
information above is provided, then please mark this report Status
Confirmed. Otherwise, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.

Take a look at your $HOME/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc file. If it

there anything odd in the [Session: saved at previous logout] section?

[Bug 1520979] [NEW] Grub multiboot is unable to load Xen under EFI

2015-11-29 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

As a new Xen user, when I install the `xen-hypervisor-amd64` package,
I'd expect it to work fine.

But upon rebooting, even if Xen succeed to boot, the system is basically
unusable, and there are plenty of Irq errors in dmesg.

It turns out that EFI is not very well supported under Xen:

http://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Xen_EFI

The alternatives are:

- boot directly from the Efi (instead of relying on grub's multiboot)
- enable legacy boot in the EFI, and reinstall grub in bios-mode (and hope that
everything goes well)

Since I don't think that the latter can be automated, the first one
would be a better approach for ubuntu's packaging, I think.

But even if that's not possible, or there are no resources for it, at
least (until EFI on Grub won't be properly supported), either at install
time or at boot time, the fact that the system is running on EFI should
be detected, and explicitly warn the user (halt the boot process?) to
avoid leaving him in a puzzlingly half-working system.

[Bug 1520995] [NEW] MIME type of externally created file isn't updated after content has been added

[Bug 1514233] Re: Ubuntu 15.10 freezes during operation.

2015-11-29 Thread GPdM
So I have been running 3.19.0-32-generic happily for some time now, I
can test a newer kernel again.

Before I do that...

1. I saw and installed the ffmpeg update.

2. As per above post I installed the "Automatically generate crash
reports for debugging" update.

My question is if this

> please capture the crash via
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSystemCrash

is still relevant? Or will the automatically generated reports be
sufficient?

[Bug 1514022] Re: System freeze

2015-11-29 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Thomas Runte, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from
kernel 4.2 to 4.3 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed
immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified,
then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your
release. Could you please do this following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F
?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit
bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1520958] [NEW] lightdm suspend/lock issues

2015-11-29 Thread Christopher Rogers
Public bug reported:

Video of the problems: https://youtu.be/T9g86OZl4DU

In the video, you'll see:
1) I un-check "Require my password when waking from suspend" in "Brightness &
Lock" settings
2) Suspend/Resume works fine
3) I check "Require my password when waking from suspend" and Suspend again
4) Waking up from suspend gives me a white screen
5) Clicking in the upper left reveals that I am at the lock screen (I can see
the reduced set of indicators)
6) Selecting "Switch accounts" takes me to a functional lock screen
7) I suspend again
8) Upon resuming to a white screen, I enter my password blindly, and am able to
unlock successfully
9) I lock my computer (lock screen is a bit glitchy)
10) I suspend from the lock screen
11) I resume, and am at the (slightly glitched) lockscreen
12) Entering my password unlocks the screen

Note that the visual glitches (whitescreen, broken password prompt)
aren't always the same, however, the problem reproduces in the same way
regardless. For example, sometimes, rather than a white screen, I see a
partial version of my desktop. Clicking the indicators, however, reveals
that I am actually at the lock screen, and the same processes of typing
blindly or switching accounts work fine.

For easy reference, I am running a fully up-to-date version of Ubuntu
15.10. If it's relevant, I am using the open source nvidia drivers (have
not yet tried this with the proprietary drivers).

[Bug 1520970] [NEW] light-locker switches disabled screen on (when used with xfce)

2015-11-29 Thread Viktor Pal
Public bug reported:

So what happens is light-locker switches the screen that was disabled in
xfce on and leaves it on after login.

To reproduce:
Desktop environment is Xfce (Xubuntu) with lightdm and light-locker.

1.) Attach an external display to a laptop and configure the DE to only use
external display. Laptop display will be powered off and only the external
display will be on.
2.) Now lock your screen using the Whisker Menu or wait until the
xfce4-power-manager locks it. Now both screens are powered off.
3.) Try to log in (hit any key on the keyboard or move the mouse). Now both
displays are switched on and the login prompt is displayed on both of the (with
the resolution of the bigger so looks strange on the built in display).
4.) After you are logged in the built in display that was powered off before
locking the screen is on (it does not display anything as it was disabled in
xfce). It is blank (black) but you can see that the backlight is on.

I'm not sure if light-locker shouldn't switch on the disabled screen and
respect DE display configuration or if xfce4-power-manager should take
care of shutting down the disabled display again after login.

OK, done that.

What is the upstream URL? Where and how do you want me to send it?

[Bug 634454] Re: Attempted to kill init! on IQ770

2015-11-29 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
jimlovell777, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available
from the very top line at the top of the page from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release
names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily
folder)? Install instructions are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . This will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is
the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this
report's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1514052] Re: erratic fan speed and little control kernel 4.2

2015-11-29 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Cut from Bug Description.

** Attachment added: "dmesg"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1514052/+attachment/4527212/+files/dmesg

** Description changed:

I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 15.10 and almost immediately my CPU fan
started speeding and slowing without good reason even when the PC is
  idle.

I tried various things but then found that if I leave the computer off
for a long time and let everything cool down then when I boot from cold
  the CPU fan is stable.

To test my theory of cold start out I then ran
  sudo cpupower frequency-set -g powersave
  followed by
  sudo cpupower frequency-set -g ondemand

The final mode is the initial mode. Almost immediately as soon as I
moved to powersave mode the erratic fan speed started. It did not stop
  when I returned to ondemand.

Temp fix for this behaviour is - go and have a cup of coffee and let the
computer cool down when you restart: shutdown then start from cold.

[Bug 1520986] [NEW] bash-completion erases "if=" when using autocomplete with the dd command.

2015-11-29 Thread Mateo Salta
Public bug reported:

Both my 14.04 and 15.10 install. using dd in a folder with the syntax
`sudo dd if=[type letters and hit tab]` will start to auto-complete but
erase `if=` and fail to continue to autocomplete.

Steps -
1. Type out a dd command `sudo dd if=`
2. Type beginning letters of an existing file.
3. Hit tab to initiate auto-complete.

What should happen
- autocomplete will put in the file name after if= and allow continuation and
suggestions of the rest of the filename.

What happens
- the file name erases if= and prevents further autocomplete action

[Bug 1520988] [NEW] Copy of large files from USB3 card reader fails mid-way

2015-11-29 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

I've got a "Lexar Professional Workflow XR1" CF card reader that
supports USB3, and has worked fine for regular JPG/CR2 images (sizes up
to about 20 MB), but when I tried some videos (which were 170MB and up),
the copy would fail around midway with "Error Splicing File:
Input/Output Error" from Thunar, and dmesg showed messages like:

[ +9,232995] usb 2-3: Disable of device-initiated U1 failed.
[ +5,006028] usb 2-3: Disable of device-initiated U2 failed.

I tried a fsck.vfat, but that didn't help. Ejecting and unmounting, I
was able to copy one file, but not the rest (tried a couple times, just
got the same errors).

This computer only has USB3 ports. So I tried another computer (running
Xubuntu 14.04) that had a non-USB3-port, and there the copy worked just
fine.

On connecting, dmesg says:

[Bug 1483975] Re: update-initramfs complains about missing /sbin/fsck.btrfs

2015-11-29 Thread Jason Straight
btrfs fsck is currently a last resort to recovery of a btrfs filesystem.

You don't want it to run and "fix" as a first resort on reboot with
problems detected.

[Bug 1010132] Re: Show copy dialog not working

2015-11-29 Thread Todd
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 887821 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/887821

Happening to me in 14.04. The first large batch of file transfers
displayed the file transfer/copy status window just fine, but a
subsequent large batch of files transferred failed to produce the
window. I only know the transfer is still occurring by looking at my
animated system monitor window, and by directly observing the folder
being copied to (looking at files appear).

Also I dont even have a progress bar on the unity launcher icon (like
the OP does). Vistually speaking, there isnt any real evidence that the
file transfer is happening.

[Bug 1520040] Re: [drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* The master control interrupt lied (SDE)!

2015-11-29 Thread Yuri Ribeiro Sucupira
HI. Today I accessed http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D but the very top line at the top of the page was a
link to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4-rc2-wily/,
which doesn't have kernel DEB packages (except for linux-
headers-4.4.0-040400rc2_4.4.0-040400rc2.201511251301_all.deb, but this
is only the kernel headers, I couldn't find any kernel image). Thus I
proceeded to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-
next/ where the most recent folder with available DEB packages currently
is http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-
next/2015-11-21-wily/

>From http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-
next/2015-11-21-wily/ I downloaded and installed the following packages:

 linux-image-4.3.0-997-generic_4.3.0-997.201511202100_amd64.deb
 linux-headers-4.3.0-997_4.3.0-997.201511202100_all.deb
 linux-headers-4.3.0-997-generic_4.3.0-997.201511202100_amd64.deb

I was able to boot this kernel. Here's the result of some commands:

'uname -a':

Linux yurix 4.3.0-997-generic #201511202100 SMP Sat Nov 21 02:02:46 UTC

'dmesg |grep -i amd':

 [1.224607] [drm] amdgpu: finishing device.
[1.224944] amdgpu: probe of :04:00.0 failed with error -2

I noticed that 'fglrx_updates.ko' (which seems to be the AMD GPU driver)
probably is a proprietary driver and thus wasn't loaded by the kernel (I
noticed some dkms error messages related to it, during kernel
installation, probably because of restrictions at the driver's dkms.conf
file), which caused kernel '4.3.0-997-generic' to try to load
/lib/modules/4.3.0-997-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/amdgpu.ko.
Because 'amdgpu.ko' wasn't loaded either, I was unable to run the 'AMD
Catalyst Control Center' (shell command: amdcccle). But the kernel did
detect the AMD GPU:

'aticonfig --list-adapters':
 * 0. 04:00.0 AMD Radeon R7 M260

 * - Default adapter (managed by
/lib/modules/4.3.0-997-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko)

'lspci |grep -i amd':

04:00.0 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Topaz
XT [Radeon R7 M260]

'i915.ko' was loaded and 'amdgpu.ko' depends on it. Here's the output for
'lsmod |grep -i i915':
 i915 --- 1204224 --- 5
 i2c_algo_bit --- 16384 --- 2 --- i915,amdgpu
 drm_kms_helper --- 135168 --- 2 --- i915,amdgpu
 drm --- 356352 --- 8 --- ttm,i915,drm_kms_helper,amdgpu
 video --- 36864 --- 3 --- i915,dell_wmi,dell_laptop

So, in a nutshell: looks like the kernel '4.3.0-997-generic' is doing ok
with its module 'i915.ko'. I will keep testing it for a while just to
make sure, but so far 'dmesg' hasn't shown me any message like
'[drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* The master control interrupt lied
(SDE)!' for kernel '4.3.0-997-generic'.

[Bug 1508638] Re: Build with multiarch support

2015-11-29 Thread Martin Pitt
TBH it'd be better to entirely drop it, at least out of main. This
ancient non-GI version of pygobject has been unmaintained and dead at
least since 2011. It's not on the desktop images any more, but
apparently still a build dependency of e. g. dbus and others.

[Bug 1520965] Re: Lenovo Helix does not wake up from suspend

2015-11-29 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Oliver Kirchkamp, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very
top line at the top of the page from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and
please do not test the daily folder)? Install instructions are available
at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

[Bug 1514102] Re: 8086:2772 Intermittent graphics corruption without nomodeset

2015-11-29 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Ian Bruntlett:
>"Don't have e-mail addresses for Daniel Vetter or Jani Nikula. Let me have
>them if you want me to pass the report to them as well."

To advise, their email, and advice to do so, was provided in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel :
"Please ensure you e-mail all maintainers of the driver in the TO: field, and
CC the mailing list."
"A list of all kernel drivers and their maintainers may be found here."
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/MAINTAINERS

Also, please don't CC me on mailing list emails (instead post the
upstream URL here as previously requested). Among many reasons, it gives
the false impression that I'm going to swoop in and drop a code fix, I'm
somehow a maintainer, or I advised you to do this (I advised sending TO
maintainers CC list, not just e-mail the list).

Well, this pretty much confirms to me that "fglrx_updates" is definitely
a proprietary AMD GPU driver and thus doesn't work with these kernels,

I will keep this kernel running for the next hours and report back if
any message like "[drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* The master

[Bug 1521010] [NEW] Can't download files

2015-11-29 Thread Genma
Public bug reported:

Original comment:
"Had a zip app installed just for the record. Anyways I was downloading a file
with the browser and all i get is "Sorry, there aren't currently any apps
installed that can handle this type of content" come on that's just silly!
Having to whip out wget to dl a file is just frustrating."

Possible bug?
I'm not sure if this is intentional or if it is a bug with the browser app,
even though I have an app that can handle zip files all I can do is cancel when
i get the message "Sorry, there aren't currently any apps installed that can
handle this type of content" no download all I can do is copy url and run wget
in terminal app. I'm not sure if this is intentional or a bug.

[Bug 1396380] Re: Installation stuck on "Preparing to install Ubuntu"

2015-11-29 Thread Oded Arbel
Still seems to be a problem with xenial - ubiquity seems to hang after
selecting "install third party software" and clicking continue.

>From `ps`ing and `strace`ing it looks like ubiquity is waiting for
Intel-microcode and nvidia-340 to be installed, and that eventually
succeeds (which takes an amount of time between annoying and
exasperating depending on the speed of your network) but there is no
progress dialog and the user experience suffers.

[Bug 1517547] Re: Dualshock 3 battery level

2015-11-29 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Andrejs Grigorjevs, as per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19
/product-support/product/latitude-d630/drivers/advanced an update to
your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (A19). If you
update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate
does it address the issue?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the
output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

[Bug 1520778] Re: No way to get rid of header divider without Page component

2015-11-29 Thread Riccardo Padovani
I think is important to have such an option - for example in Falldown[0]
we use MainView but we don't have any Page, and we don't want to have
the divider

[Bug 1514052] Re: erratic fan speed and little control kernel 4.2

2015-11-29 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

- I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 15.10 and almost immediately my CPU fan
- started speeding and slowing without good reason even when the PC is
- idle.
+ After upgrading to Ubuntu 15.10 my CPU fan started speeding and slowing
+ without good reason even when the PC is idle.

- I tried various things but then found that if I leave the computer off
- for a long time and let everything cool down then when I boot from cold
- the CPU fan is stable.
+ This has been bisected to commit f989e55452c74b4f7b22c889b8ec9f1192aaeec4 :
+ i8k: Add support for fan labels

- To test my theory of cold start out I then ran
- sudo cpupower frequency-set -g powersave
- followed by
- sudo cpupower frequency-set -g ondemand
+ This patch adds labels support for fans if SMM function with EAX register
+ 0x03a3 reports it. This information was taken from DOS binary NBSVC.MDM.

- The final mode is the initial mode. Almost immediately as soon as I
- moved to powersave mode the erratic fan speed started. It did not stop
- when I returned to ondemand.
+ Additionally this patch change detection of fan presece. Instead reading fan
+ status now detection is based on new label SMM function. Dell DOS binary
+ NBSVC.MDM is doing similar checks, so we should do that too.

- Temp fix for this behaviour is - go and have a cup of coffee and let the
- computer cool down when you restart: shutdown then start from cold.
+ This patch also remove I8K_FAN_LEFT and I8K_FAN_RIGHT usage from hwmon driver
+ part because that names does not make sense anymore. So numeric constants are
+ used instead. Original /proc/i8k ioctl part was not changed for compatibility
+ reasons.

Tried intel_pstate but it is not supported for some reason on my machine
ie the following does not work and I am left with driver: acpi-cpufreq

  GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash intel_pstate=enable"

Could not see ACPI Thermal Zones reported in dmesg
