[Bug 1488426] Re: High CPU usage of kworker/ksoftirqd

2015-12-09 Thread Peter Curtis
@Aditya Thanks for the clarification. I had been trying to find out if
the patch had been merged.

The issue is not however fixed for me with 4.2 nor was it for lpuser in
#8 who tried a number of kernels. However it an improvement as I said in
#17

The following shows the problem first without BT on then with showing
the problem disappearing:

[Bug 1470700] Re: QNetworkAccessManager hangs when in flight mode

2015-12-09 Thread Timo Jyrinki
It seems like the fixes landed to bug #1480877 help here - the silo 032
is now rebased, and weather app again works even with NM backend and all
these new patches.

There's a new patch pending related to that patch landing, but this silo
032 would now finally start to be a landing candidate after that is
settled.

Confirming that "intel_idle.max_cstate=1" has solved my complete freeze
issues on Bay Trail running Linux 4.1.13(Slackware64-current(pre-4.2)
formerly running Ubuntu 15.04/15.10 with stock kernels).

[Bug 1453298]

2015-12-09 Thread ladiko
I tried all ubuntu 14.04 LTS kernels from 3.13 over 3.16, 3.19 to 4.2
and got freezes with all of them except for 3.13. All which produced
freezes have been tried with all mentioned kernel parameters and
verified it with cat /proc/cmdline. Kernel 4.2 + intel_idle.max_cstate=1
froze within 1 day.

We are running almost 200 machines with a identical setup of ubuntu
14.04 + xfce4 + chromium + html5-kiosk web application which includes an
ogm video which is played when idle and otherwise some hardware
accelerated html5 animations. 50 of the machines were supported by an
Celeron J1900, the remains are equiped with older Core 2 Duo / Pentium
Dual-Core or Celeron 847 and ~20 AMD E1-2100 or A4-5000. The most stable
kernel for us is the default Ubuntu 14.04 kernel 3.13. We're going to
buy AMD Kabinis as we dont have any issues there except the higher TDP
and higher temperatures in a complete passively cooled system.

[Bug 1524339] [NEW] virsh failure to start lxc container - internal error: Unable to find 'cpuacct' cgroups controller mount

2015-12-09 Thread Larry Michel
Public bug reported:

Seeing libvirt error while trying to deploy instances in OpenStack

"error: internal error: Unable to find 'cpuacct' cgroups controller mount".

This is recreatable for kilo and liberty.

The cloud version for kilo is root@lambert:~# dpkg -l|grep virt

amd64programs f
or the libvirt library
ii libvirt01.2.12-0ubuntu14.2~cloud0
amd64library fo
r interfacing with different virtualization systems

And I was also able to recreate with liberty version:

root@lambert:/etc/apt/sources.list.d# apt-cache policy libvirt-bin
libvirt-bin:
  Installed: 1.2.16-2ubuntu11~cloud0
  Candidate: 1.2.16-2ubuntu11~cloud0

When I tried on a system with 1.2.2-0ubuntu13.1.7, there was no issue starting
the container.

If this is an issue with the version in the cloud archives, when was it
fixed and when does the fix makes it to the kilo and liberty cloud
archives?

Below is the error on the nova-compute node with actual instance xml and
I also recreated with a basic container:

[Bug 1453298]

2015-12-09 Thread Martin Wallin
I can also confirm that "intel_idle.max_cstate=1" has solved my complete
freeze issues on Bay Trail (Celeron J1900) running Linux 4.2.5 (Arch
Linux).

Before I got complete freeze when playing video using Kodi or VLC,
browsing using Chrome etc. Freeze happened randomly, sometimes within 5
minutes of boot, other the computer would be stable for hours.

With "intel_idle.max_cstate=1" the computer has been stable for more
than two days straight now playing videos, music, browsing using Chrome,
playing some games etc.

Thanks John for the tip!

[Bug 1453298]

2015-12-09 Thread Jbmacbrodie-m
My apologies Mr. Frühberger , I see that I've once again re-discovered
an already existing work around. In the first post for this bug, you
revealed the cstate workaround, almost a year ago.

I've tried your patch on my freeze prone 4.2.6. It did last longer (25
minutes vs. 5 vs.) The patch looks valid all the way back to 3.18, the
oldest project directory I have. I suspect on my 4.2.5 kernel, the
patch would appear to be freeze-less.

still the same for everyone. Forcing the kernel to max cstate 1 or
setting that via the bios solves the issue reliable.

We have some good experience with:
https://github.com/fritsch/OpenELEC.tv/blob/jarvis-
egl/packages/linux/patches/4.3/linux-999-i915-use-legacy-turbo.patch

Besides that - this bug got really, really silent concerning fixes.

[Bug 1453298]

2015-12-09 Thread Daniel-ffwll
(In reply to Chris Rainey from comment #119)

Hm, sounds like after over a year of random walking multiple people have
nailed this to cpu cstates, and the gpu driver changing behaviour
slightly was just the canary in the coal mine here.

I tried to read through all comments here (gosh is there a lot of that)
and didn't find anything to contradict that.

Given that I filed a new bug report on bugzilla.kernel.org:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051

Everyone please jump over there to that bug and fill in with your
details/summary.

Thanks, Daniel

[Bug 1453298]

2015-12-09 Thread Jbmacbrodie-m
I was surprised to experience a freeze while running Android_x86 4.4-rc3
on my 2 in 1 laptop. After digging a bit - I found that the android_x86
runs on a custom linux-4.0.8. There wasn't a cstate argument in the
command line. Too soon to know if it will help, but I no longer get the
"unfortunately," my app "has stopped running" warning when I try to
launch an app with wifi off.

As ladiko points out, it is curious that AMD machines seem to be exempt
from these freezes. I have a dual boot AMD laptop mainly running Mint
(linux 3.16.0-38-generic) for about 6 months. The only problems I've
had with it were related to the old hard drive starting to fail. The
kernel might be too old to freeze, though.

[Bug 1524338] [NEW] e1000e module signals that interface is up

2015-12-09 Thread aoh
Public bug reported:

VERSION
===
Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS
Linux 3.8.0-23-generic
Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection
Network kernel module: e1000e

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
==
Connect two machines (without switch); nodeA and nodeB.
nodeA is a machine as specified above.
nodeB can be a machine using the e1000e module or igb module (these are the
ones we have in our lab).

Verify that interfaces are up and that you have connection between nodeA
and nodeB.

Bring interface down:
root@nodeA:~# ip link set dev ethX down

Quickly check interface on nodeB:
root@nodeB:~# ip link show dev ethX
5: ethX: mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN qlen
1

Wait ~2s and check interface on nodeB again:
root@nodeB:~# ip link show dev ethX
5: ethX: mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP qlen 1

ACTUAL RESULTS
==
Interface ethX on nodeB comes up after ~2s.

EXPECTED RESULTS

Interface ethX on nodeB should not come up again. It should remain down.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
==
This issue has been reproduced with kernel 3.14.5 (Ubuntu 14.04).
This issue can *NOT* be reproduced on two machines using the igb kernel module.
This issue is reproducible with Linux 4.2.3.

[Bug 1433906] Re: Acer, Inc ID 5986:055a is useless after 14.04.2 installed.

2015-12-09 Thread Henrik Ingo
Hi

I've been analyzing this and proposed some solutions. See
http://sourceforge.net/p/linux-uvc/mailman/message/34681976/

I don't know what the kernel maintainers want from a fix, but for those
of us who use (K)ubuntu on a Lenovo, I think it would make us very happy
to simply do my last proposal: set entity[id=3]->baSourceID = 4 and we
get a working web cam. I will send such a patch shortly.

2015-12-09 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1520223] Re: too sensitive

2015-12-09 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1524318] [NEW] KeePassX Launcher icon is broken

2015-12-09 Thread epii
Public bug reported:

After the recent security update of KeePassX in Willy, the desktop icon
is broken as is attached.

The icon file is installed in
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/apps/keepassx.png.
This file is generated from the SVG file located in debian/keepassx.svg using
imagemagic (see debian/rules):
  convert -density 192 -background none debian/keepassx.svg \
debian/keepassx/usr/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/apps/keepassx.png
It seems that imagemagick fails to parse the SVG file and producing bad images.

I don't know why imagemagick fails parsing, but the simplest solution is
to convert the SVG file using inkscape or something.

 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 1520166] [NEW] login freeze with big password

2015-12-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Marc Deslauriers
(mdeslaur):

After block the screen with (Ctrl+Alt+L) it shows the login interface,
my keyboard sometime start to send a keypress event with the value 5,
like the user was typing infinite times the number 5, after a while the
login interface freeze, and it is necessary to kill the X or restart the
computer.

I think that the password box crash with a big number of characters and
freeze the login interface.

[Bug 1523689] Re: updates not being installed

2015-12-09 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your
report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can
better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it.

Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For
help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally,
in the report please include:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System ->
About Ubuntu.
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by
checking in Synaptic.
3) What happened and what you expected to happen.

The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide
variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .
Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make
your bug report much more complete. Thanks!

[Bug 1520882] [NEW] lockscreen allows ~0.5s of visibility of previous unlocked screen content

I'm not sure what package provides the lockscreen on 15.10.

This seems to happen only when the screen is unlocked, and the laptop

I used the pxe installer + preseed to do a non-interactive install of
ubuntu wily. After finishing the install, there was a random seed
/var/lib/urandom/random-seed but there was no file /var/lib/systemd
/random-seed. After first boot and then after rebooting again, the
timestamp on /var/lib/urandom/random-seed was not updated from the

[Bug 1524259] Re: igb: Detected Tx Unit Hang with stack trace

2015-12-09 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1524259/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

2015-12-09 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your dmesg attachment in this bug report it
seems that there is a problem with your hardware. I recommend
performing a back up and then investigating the situation. Measures you
might take include checking cable connections and using software tools
to investigate the health of your hardware. In the event that is is not
in fact an error with your hardware please set the bug's status back to
New. Thanks and good luck!

[Bug 1301015] Re: Networking does not restart

2015-12-09 Thread Hayjumper
The command in comment #8 *should* do this in a single exec resource:

sudo ifdown --exclude=lo -a && sudo ifup --exclude=lo -a

However, I have found this does not actually work either for any
significant config change (e.g. IP address change, gateway change). In
fact, the command above frequently causes networking to stop working in
such cases.

The only way I've found that works is to reboot the server;
NetworkManager is not an option when doing text-based network config.
Other distros using upstart do not seem to have this problem. It's a
shame that Canonical hasn't seen fit to address this, and its cost them
my employer's (albeit meager) support budget.

2015-12-09 Thread Marc Deslauriers
The untrusted certificates in comment #29 are normal. They are
fraudulent certs that were issued and revoked and are in that list so
that they are deliberately marked as untrusted.

I will note that this has thrown an illegal instruction trap while doing
this:

[ 522.963634] invalid opcode: [#1] SMP

So it is likely that dispite offering up the avx2 flags to the guest the
host is not actually providing the instructions?

[Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space

2015-12-09 Thread David Jones
I think this is a pretty serious issue because if you select Full Disk
Encryption when install Ubuntu a very small (~250e6 byte) partition is
created. Each kernel update creates another (~30e6 byte) initrd.img file
and you quickly run out of space (only enough space for about 4 kernel
upgrades). Typically during the update-initramfs of a "apt-get upgrade".

It is not acceptable for ordinary users to have to manage their kernels
and their free space in the /boot partition.
