[Bug 1553662] [NEW] do not bring main window to top and steal focus when startup finishes
Public bug reported: Since GnuCash startup takes some time, after starting the application I usually continue doing something else, opening other windows, etc. Then about a dozen seconds later GnuCash startup finishes and brings the main window to top, and also steals the focus from whichever window used it beforehand. [Bug 1548083] Re: Xenial kernels hang on boot
Andreas Pokorny, the next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel 3.19 to 4.3 in order to identify the last good kernel commit, followed immediately by the first bad one. This will allow for a more expedited analysis of the root cause of your issue. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ? Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting. After the offending commit (not kernel version) has been identified, then please mark this report Status Confirmed. Thank you for your understanding. [Bug 1548085] Re: Trackpad no longer works on kernel 4.4 series
Carl Godfrey, thank you for reporting this, and helping make Ubuntu better. In order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please keep in mind the following: 1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder). 2) The release names are irrelevant. 3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was released upstream. 4) Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may: 1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there. 2) Backup, or clone the primary install. If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is the release candidate number if it exists. If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream. Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically requested to do so. Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding. ** Tags added: latest-bios-1.10 regression-release ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1548085 Title: Trackpad no longer works on kernel 4.4 series To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1548085/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Niclas Kiefer, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8H61M_PRO/HelpDesk_Download/ an update to your computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is available (4802). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette . Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. Also, you don't have to create a new bug report. Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible: 1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an apport-collect): sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date 2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement or not. 3) Please mark this report Status Confirmed. If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid. [Bug 1544809] Re: kernel security update fails if a 2nd Ubuntu on same machine
apport information ** Description changed: There is a security issue when multiple instances of Ubuntu (or other distributions) are installed on the same hardware. In my case I have 14.04 LTS and 16.04 alpha (plus some others). After installing 14.04 LTS as the main system on an UEFI machine there is a file, that effectively points to whichever installation has control of the boot process and which instance of GRUB2 gets run. If a second install, for example, a test of 16.04 alpha, is made then that file is over written. Rebooting 14.04 LTS via 16.04 alpha's GRUB2 or other means and installing a standard kernel security update does NOT make the new kernel available on subsequent reboots because even though 14.04 LTS's GRUB2 has been updated it is never run. 16.04 alpha's GRUB2 (which is ignorant of 14.04 LTS's update) is run because that is what points to. There are many ways to fix this problem. 1) Make all installations maintain a link to the most recent kernel. Ubuntu does this, there are links in the root directory current and old of kernel and intrd. Make all boot loaders look for those links. If Ubuntu configured GRUB2 to look for /vmlinuz it could find the current kernel even if the kernel had been upgraded after GRUB2 was updated. Ubuntu configured GRUB2 does not do this. Of course it is impossible to get all software from all sources to "play nice", but you could make multiple installations of Ubuntu co-operate with each other. 2) Check where points to and "take it back", if necessary. Modified attached. 3) Use an EFI style boot loader on EFI machines. There is an Ubuntu repository for rEFInd, which has worked well for me. This has the added advantage that if anyone makes a test installation like 16.04 alpha and then deletes it (not an unreasonable thing to do with an alpha release) then the machine does not become unbootable - because would be pointing to an non-existent instance of GRUB2. BTW rEFInd and GRUB2 can be made to co-exist in various way, if you want. END) I can not see how to make an attachment to this bug report, so I will paste my zz-update-grub here as text, and ubuntu-bug did not work for me. $ ubuntu-bug linux usage: whoopsie-upload-all [-h] [-t TIMEOUT] whoopsie-upload-all: error: unrecognized arguments: linux <\cut-n-paste from terminal> #! /bin/sh set -e which update-grub >/dev/null 2>&1 || exit 0 if type running-in-container >/dev/null 2>&1 && \ running-in-container >/dev/null; then exit 0 fi set -- $DEB_MAINT_PARAMS mode="${1#\'}" mode="${mode%\'}" case $0:$mode in # Only run on postinst configure and postrm remove, to avoid wasting # time by calling update-grub multiple times on upgrade and removal. # Also run if we have no DEB_MAINT_PARAMS, in order to work with old # kernel packages. */postinst.d/*:|*/postinst.d/*:configure|*/postrm.d/*:|*/postrm.d/*:remove) CFG1='/boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/grub.cfg' CFG2='/boot/grub/grub.cfg' if [ -e $CFG1 ]; then # This is an EFI system. # Does that config file point to this installation? # Get UUID of installation that that file points to UUID=$(grep "\<[[:xdigit:]-]\{36\}\>" $CFG1 \ | cut --delimiter=' ' --fields=2) # Is file format stable? # Could use "sed" rather than "cut" to find UUID. # UUID=$(sed -n -e 's/^.*\(\<[[:xdigit:]-]\{36\}\>\).*$/\1/p' $CFG1) # Get device name for this installation # Spaces are needed, in case grub2 is on the root partition. [Bug 1553654] [NEW] In JavaScript engine, some String operations produce ConsString instead, type errors at runtime
Public bug reported: I have a small task that's done in Java's javax.script engine for JavaScript, which I understand was based on Rhino in Java SE 6 and 7, swapped out for Nashorn in Java SE 8. The code fails to run in openjdk-6 (38) and openjdk-7(95) - both i386 and amd64- but *only* in Ubuntu. A colleague has tested the exact same releases of Java in Redhat without the error. The code, however, works fine in openjdk-8 in both Ubuntu and Redhat. The main issue seems to be that the + operator between two strings no longer produces a string result, it produces a sun.org.mozilla.javascript.ConsString instead. That doesn't behave as a regular String (it lacks a replace method, passing it as a parameter to a Java method expecting String produces method not found because the signature is wrong, etc.) If I edit and change every string expression s1 + s2 to be String(s1 + s2) then I have a usable string again. Here is some code to reproduce the error: import javax.script.ScriptEngine; import javax.script.ScriptEngineManager; public class jstest { public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { ScriptEngineManager mgr = new ScriptEngineManager(); ScriptEngine testEngine = mgr.getEngineByMimeType( "application/javascript"); String testScript = "var key = 'something';\n" + "var tpr = 'echo';\n" + "var pb = new java.lang.ProcessBuilder(tpr, '--', '--'+key);\n" + "pb.start().waitFor();\n"; System.out.println(testEngine.eval(testScript)); // success prints 0 } } Running in Ubuntu gives this error: javax.script.ScriptException: sun.org.mozilla.javascript.EvaluatorException: Java constructor for "java.lang.ProcessBuilder" with arguments "string,string,sun.org.mozilla.javascript.ConsString" not found. Any ideas what's going wrong and why only in Ubuntu? [Bug 1454473] Re: In Ubuntu 15.04, simply moving the mouse via touchpad scrolls the window
I'm on the XPS 13 Developer Edition on 14.04. The touchpad seems to work fine in most everything but Chrome. This may be because I only notice because I mostly use Chrome. My symptoms are: Scrolling quickly does a "right click" (not a huge deal, and not really this issue). Eventually... the screen acts as if the scroll or click is being held down. I move one finger on the touchpad and chrome was scrolling. If i move to the side first, then up and diagonal, i can actually move the mouse on the screen. If I move up / down only, it acts like its only scrolling. Doing the disable / enable on the touchpad fixes the second symptom. (xinput set-prop ... mentioned above) I'm using firefox now to post this, I haven't noticed this yet with that. I guess firefox will be my main browser for a bit, will post back if I experience the same on it. [Bug 1163945] Re: apport-gtk-gpu-intel-error.py popups on every boot
Hanine HAMZIOUI, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is missing. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. First, execute at a terminal: cd /var/crash && sudo rm * ; sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade && sudo service apport start force_start=1 If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Now reproduce the crash, then open a terminal, navigate to your /var/crash directory and file your report with: sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. By default, this sends the crash to the Ubuntu Error Tracker infrastructure, which is different than Launchpad. For more on this, please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ErrorTracker . However, if after doing this you would still like to have a crash report posted to Launchpad, for example to ease triage and add others to your report, one would need to open the following file via a terminal: sudo nano /etc/apport/crashdb.conf and comment out the line: 'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'], by changing it to: # 'problem_types': ['Bug', 'Package'], Save, close, and file the crash report via: sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/FILENAME.crash Where FILENAME is the actual name of the file found in the folder. However, this report is being closed since the process outlined above will deal with this issue more efficiently. Also, please do not attach your crash report manually to this report and reopen it. Thank you for your understanding. [Bug 1551283] Re: "Region & Language" settings should allow you to set keyboard input method system
I have uploaded modified versions of im-config and language-selector to this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/im-config-gnome Please feel free to upload and test. With those changes, im-config (and gnome-language-selector) will default to IBus in Ubuntu GNOME. I added an exception for Ubuntu GNOME, so it will not default to fcitx even if a CJKV language is used as the display language. This seemed to be the most reasonable solution, considering the limitations of gnome-control-center in this respect. I also changed pkg_depends so it pulls IBus IM engines for Chinese in Ubuntu GNOME. (Currently it does not.) It should be noted that you don't need to install language-selector- gnome to switch between IM frameworks (IBus, fcitx, etc.). It can be done from the im-config GUI "Input Method Configuration" or from command line. Let me know if you have any objections on the proposed changes. Personally I think it would make sense to at least try to *allow* the users to use fcitx, even if g-c-c doesn't support it. Possibly it would require that the settings of the IM related environment variables in gnome-session are commented. (im-config sets them anyway as long as IBus is the selected IM framework.) I added a gnome-session task as a reminder. ;) @Nikita: The input source you should use for typing Japanese is "Japanese (Anthy)" or possibly "Japanese (Mozc)". ** Changed in: im-config (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: im-config (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => In Progress ** Changed in: im-config (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Gunnar Hjalmarsson (gunnarhj) ** Changed in: language-selector (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: language-selector (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => In Progress ** Changed in: language-selector (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Gunnar Hjalmarsson (gunnarhj) ** Also affects: gnome-session (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1551283 Title: "Region & Language" settings should allow you to set keyboard input method system To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-gnome/+bug/1551283/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1553626] [NEW] blank console after upgrading to 3.2.0-99
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 12.04.5, ASUS model 1015E, x86_64 When I boot the 3.2.0-99 kernel on my ASUS netbook, I pretty much never get a working display manager. (I think it booted okay the first time after installing the kernel, but that's it.) Usually I just get a black display. I have also gotten - an almost complete login screen, except the background is wrong (uniform purple instead of my wallpaper), and trackpad clicks are ignored (but trackpad motion works) - stuck at the Ubuntu splash screen I once tried booting in recovery mode. I noticed a message about modprobe being terminated by signal 9, and I noticed several messages about modprobe timeouts. But other than that the messages didn't tell me anything that I could make sense of. I can ssh into the system. Unfortunately, "apport-bug linux" gets stuck (it still says "collecting problem information" after 30 minutes), so I'm filing this directly on Launchpad. I can get the apport configuration information from the 3.2.0-98 kernel (that kernel works just fine). I can also collect any log files, ps output, etc. that you'd like. lightdm does seem to be running. The only suspicious thing I see in the log files is that Xorg.0.log is missing a bunch of text that it contains when using the -98 kernel. I noticed that I had an out-of-date BIOS, but upgrading the BIOS did not fix anything. [Bug 1553625] [NEW] wifi not connecting BCM43142 : 14e4:4365 : wl
Public bug reported: I tried all the help pages I could find several times over. no success. posted on Ubuntu help. The question was voted down, no response. I have a useless machine. Why bother with Linux when there's no assistance? I did get the wifi working at one stage, however, after a shut down and restart it didn't work again. [Bug 1553620] [NEW] ubiquity exec needs to be prefixed with sudo to stop crash
Public bug reported: Creating a live CD of 16.04. Just happen to be using Pinguy ISO Builder but I guess it still applies to those that are manually creating a live CD using ubiquity.
