[Bug 1542862] Re: pl2303h and ftdi serial port bug
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: When developing an application using serial ports, behaviour between process restarts is undefined for particular usb serial port chipsets. Tested chipsets to fail are: * pl2303H * ftdi Tested chipsets to work are: * 16550A * pl2303ra Attached is a minimal test program to recreate the issue. The program needs to run twice, the first to create the problem, the second instance that shows the problem. See the comments at the beginning of the test program to see expected output and observed output. You'll need the device under question attached and running as the receiver in the test program and a NULL modem cable (3 wire). Easiest to show the problem if you have two of the same USB devices attached and execute the command with "./a.out /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB1". Note, flushing, and other workarounds haven't worked, only physically removing and reinserting the problematic devices between runs (in particular, the device that is receiving the data over the serial port). As there appears to be data in a buffer between runs that can't be properly flushed, I can't say if this is a potential security issue or not. Hi, Thank you for the reply. This problem can be reproduced on 14.04 LTS (3.13.0-76-generic). [Bug 38753]
(In reply to Syam from comment #46) > The problem is that this raise happens not on 'click' but on mouse-down > itself. This is correct, the raise happens on press if that's the action you configured for what happens on click on inactive window. This is configurable. If you don't like the default of "Activate, Raise & Pass Click" change it to "Activate & Pass Click". Changing the action to be performed on release instead of press would be rather weird. The window would not activate till you release. That's not what a user (and applications) expects. If we had any chance to know that the user intends to drag we could perform a different strategy. To me the issue is fixed. This bug report contains multiple suggestions on how it should behave. Several of them even contradicting. If we should only mark it as fixed when all of them are fixed, it won't happen. I consider it as fixed as the actual problem is fixed. Now as I'm the only one here who probably has tried this out, I ask you to first try it before starting discussions about the state of this bug report. Also I'm not interested in discussions whether it's fixed or wontfixed. I have better things to do with my dev time (like fixing 14 year old bug reports). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/38753 Title: Inactive window "raise on click" should occur after click is released To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/kde-baseapps/+bug/38753/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

> I'm not sure if that'd suffice. Consider the situation: We considered this situation during our discussions and came to the conclusion that it's out of scope. The drag is performed from the active window, for the compositor it's impossible to know that the user clicked the window to perform a drag and that's also not how the Wayland protocol allows to start a drag (the click must(!) be passed to the window). There are multiple ways now to circumvent the problem: * mark the "destination" window as keep above * use Alt+Tab during drag and drop to change window * use Present Windows (that needs implementation) to change window * use task bar to switch windows We also think that the users are able to realize that they cannot drag from a maximized window and will change the geometry before. Just like users use split screen in Dolphin to better support drag'n'drop.

The problem exists and it is disappointing to see that it'd still need to be worked around even though we now have a perfect opportunity to fix this - Wayland new Qt etc etc. > > We also think that the users are able to realize that they cannot drag from > a maximized window and will change the geometry before. Just like users use > split screen in Dolphin to better support drag'n'drop. Hmm.. Users are not just 'able' to realise. They are forced to. And all these workaround statements can be equally applied to removing drag & drop altogether (for Dolphin, for example) saying that "users can just do Ctrl+C/X & Ctrl+V". Anyway, if this is how we are 'fixing' this bug, please close it as WONTFIX rather than FIXED. Because that's what's happening to this bug report. (In reply to Martin Gräßlin from comment #47) > (In reply to Syam from comment #46) > > The problem is that this raise happens not on 'click' but on mouse-down > > itself. > > This is correct, the raise happens on press if that's the action you > configured for what happens on click on inactive window. This is > configurable. If you don't like the default of "Activate, Raise & Pass > Click" change it to "Activate & Pass Click". This has been suggested earlier. But it doesn't really work, because the setting is really for mouse-down and not a 'click' (which is completed at mouse-up). With "Activate and Pass click", the window won't be raised after one click. The user needs to click on it again to raise it. And that is indeed weird, I agree. > > Changing the action to be performed on release instead of press would be > rather weird. The window would not activate till you release. That's not > what a user (and applications) expects. Is it really weird? I wonder how it is done on Windows? Does the background window raise at mouse-down itself or only on 'click', i.e. after mouse-up? I have to boot in to a Windows machine before confirming. > If we had any chance to know that > the user intends to drag we could perform a different strategy. I see from some earlier comments that the devs are stuck on this 'angle' to solve the problem. But as mentioned in the original report, 'raising at mouse-up and not immediately after mouse-down' would solve it without any need to know if a drag is being done. > > To me the issue is fixed. This bug report contains multiple suggestions on > how it should behave. Several of them even contradicting. Well, the original report mentions one problem and one solution. I understand that it is difficult to implement this with current technology - as pointed out in some earlier comment, on current Linux desktops & GUI libraries, everything seems to happen at mouse-down and not on mouse-clicks. > > Now as I'm the only one here who probably has tried this out, I ask you to > first try it before starting discussions about the state of this bug report. I am deeply sorry if my earlier comment offended you. I was afraid if it'd come out like this. But I didn't mean any disrespect. [Bug 38753]
FYI, on windows, window management is completely done by the clients (so a client knows that this is gonna be a drag and can avoid the self-raise) The WM_TAKE_FOCUS protocol (despite the focus has really nothing to do with the stack order) pointed that direction (and sucks terribly because of broken client implementations... letting alone the focus stealing problems) Raising on MB release would be possible (on caveats, see comment #37), but just cause other behavioral problems (if the user didn't want to drag something, but draw a selection frame etc.) About present windows to the rescue: *cough* https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/105341/ **COUGH** :-P Last thought: detect the drag (maybe even on X11 by listening to dnd messages rather than "something grabbed the pointer") and restore the stack if it happened within "the dnd timeout™" (which doesn't exist either - there's no guarantee Qt and Gtk wait the same amount of time), ie. lower the window we just raised (while even that could be nasty: assume the user wanted to dnd within the just raised client and suddenly it lowers again) tl;dr - clean up your f desktop ;-P -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/38753 Title: Inactive window "raise on click" should occur after click is released To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/kde-baseapps/+bug/38753/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

So the new php-imagick upload now passes its testsuite on amd64 and ppc64el, but shows failures on i386, armhf and s390x http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/p/php-imagick/xenial/armhf http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/p/php-imagick/xenial/i386 http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/p/php-imagick/xenial/s390x Same test failure on i386 and s390x, and only 1 test failure instead of 20+. Different failure on armhf (a test timeout - possibly a problem of the architecture being slow rather than a bug in the code). Is this a new test? Do you believe this test would fail with the previous version of php-imagick as well? [Bug 1553882] Re: GPU hangs after resume from suspend
Reinis Zumbergs, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. In order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please keep in mind the following: 1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder). 2) The release names are irrelevant. 3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was released upstream. 4) Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may: 1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there. 2) Backup, or clone the primary install. If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is the release candidate number if it exists. If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream. Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically requested to do so. Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results. [Bug 1553885] [NEW] VPN split DNS gets broken after suspend/resume
Public bug reported: I've got a company's VPN server I connect to. When I connect to it I get several DNS entries for split DNS configuration and this works fine. After suspend/resume cycle I reconnect to VPN and see those split DNS entries added along with entries for VPN's DNS servers that do not have domain attached to it (i.e. not split). [Bug 1552082] Re: String settings with special characters become quoted
@Brian, unfortunately changes to unity-scopes-shell take considerably longer to land than changes to our bindings, so I can't promise it'll be available any sooner than 1, maybe 2 weeks. My suggestion would be to implement a workaround in your JS code for the time being that checks for quotes either side of a settings value, then strips them out. At least this way, you can have your scope working ASAP, plus the change will be backward compatible even once the fix lands. Something like this: function unquote(str) { if (str[0] === '"' && str[str.length - 1] === '"') return str.slice(1, str.length - 1); return str; } then later: var setting = unquote(scopes.self.settings["location"].get_string()); -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1552082 Title: String settings with special characters become quoted To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-js-scopes/+bug/1552082/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1553757] Re: dbconfig-common: writing config to /etc/dbconfig-common/maas-region-controller.conf stat: cannot stat '/etc/dbconfig-common/maas-region-controller.conf': No such file or directory
Hi Paul Sorry for not being clear enough. The actual issue/concern I have is: stat: cannot stat '/etc/dbconfig-common/maas-region-controller.conf': No such file or directory So, I've only been able to reproduce in my system so far, but I have not being able to reproduce it in any cleanly installed system with the latest version of dbconfig-common in Xenial. (2.0.3). At first I thought this was just my system being broken, but I now have not only been the one coming across this issue. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/maas/+bug/1553648. That being said, I must say that I've been using Xenial since very early, and I just started seen this recently, probably the last couple weeks. Obviously, I've been upgrading pretty much daily, but it would match the latest sync from Debian. Now, the way I'm reproducing this issue right now is an install. I have remove/purged all the packages, include dbconfig common packages and made sure that /etc/dbconfig-common doesn't exist : roaksoax@unleashed:~/Desktop/project/packaging-1.10⟫ dpkg -l | grep dbconfig 1 roaksoax@unleashed:~/Desktop/project/packaging-1.10⟫ sudo apt-get install maas Reading package lists... Done [...] The following additional packages will be installed: dbconfig-common dbconfig-pgsql isc-dhcp-server libecap2v5 maas-cli maas-common maas-dhcp maas-dns maas-proxy maas-rack-controller [...] Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y The installation resumes, and It asks me the question to: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/15319155/ .Right after answering the questions (no matter if I say install the package maintainer's version or keep the local version currently installed) , it is always the same result: Setting up maas-region-controller (2.0.0~alpha1+bzr4736-0ubuntu1~xenial2) ... dbconfig-common: writing config to /etc/dbconfig-common/maas-region-controller.conf stat: cannot stat '/etc/dbconfig-common/maas-region-controller.conf': No such file or directory creating postgres user maas: success. verifying creation of user: success. [] roaksoax@unleashed:~/Desktop/project/packaging-1.10⟫ ls -l /etc/dbconfig-common/ total 4 -rw--- 1 root root 484 Mar 6 23:52 config As you can see, the file doesn't get created. Now, what I'm really wondering if is there is only an issue in systems where dbconfig-common was first upgraded to the latest version (2.0.3), and not on a freshly installed system where dbconfig-common is latest, as I've not been able to reproduce this on a freshly installed system yet. PS: Now, to answer your last question, the question raised by UCF was never there because we preseed the following: set_question maas-region-controller/dbconfig-install true Or maybe, the preseeding doesn't really matter and we just have never gotten into a similar situation, hence it never really has been shown before. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1553757 Title: dbconfig-common: writing config to /etc/dbconfig-common/maas-region- controller.conf stat: cannot stat '/etc/dbconfig-common/maas-region- controller.conf': No such file or directory To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbconfig-common/+bug/1553757/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Right, you are correct that the variable here is php-imagick. Sorry for mis-stating that earlier. For reference, I'm actually not sure why, but Debian's version has been failing for much longer (https://ci.debian.net/packages/p/php-imagick/unstable/amd64/). And that occurred with different versions of both php-imagick and imagemagick. What can be happening here is that php-imagick relies on some behavior (php-imagick upstream is ony tested against official imagemagick releases) that is supposed to be present in some version of imagemagick (checked by version string). Debian/Ubuntu backport patches that alter functionality but do not bump the version string and that can lead to php-imagick not doing the right thing. I'm not sure if that is the case currently. > > The bug is in imagemagick, though, not in php-imagick. > > First, this is not at all clear to me. Imagemagick is a widely used utility > and library; there have been no changes to the upstream version of > imagemagick included in Ubuntu since 15.04; and there are no reports of > segfaults with imagemagick outside of php-imagick (except for input > fuzzing). This suggests to me that this is not a bug in imagemagick at all, > but a misuse of the imagemagick API by php-imagick (possibly related to > competing threading implementations in PHP vs. libmagick). Well, I am new to this, but my understanding of php-imagick is that there have been many bugs fixed in imagemagick's memory handling (and threading, possibly) due to php-imagick. Not all of those fixes are in Debian & Ubuntu's imagemagick. As indicated by my backports already in this bug (and in my latest), there are clearly missing upstream changes that are needed in the Debian/Ubuntu version of imagemagick (both an incomplete backport and a (possibly) missing one). Note that if I hold php-imagick constant and test against the two version of imagemagick (with and without my fixes), I get different results (while upstream php-imagick against upstream imagemagick does not see any issues) -- that to me indicates the bug is missed fixes in imagemagick. So I'm not entirely sure whether it's a misuse of an API (which seems like it'd be broken in upstream php-imagick against our base version of imagemagick) or if it's a broken (or not thread-safe) API in our version of imagemagick that has been fixed upstream. I believe there was also, actually, an upstream release of 6.8.9.10 based upon my reading of their git logs. But not sure. > Second, even should this be a bug that needs to be fixed in imagemagick, it > is the *combination* of imagemagick and php-imagick that is buggy. The test > suite is currently giving us a strong indication that whereas the current > php-imagick package is usable, upgrading to the new php-imagick package will > make it substantially less usable. Again, I know that seems to be the case, but Debian's results imply something else. Are the launchpad sbuilds multi-cpu? This is actually somewhat concerning. I consistently get segmentation fault failures from the tests in my runs -- but the launchpad build logs do not indicate any. Debian's, as I mentioned, do. Another big difference between the version of php-imagick, ignore functionality, is a huge increase in coverage tests. I belive php-imagick 3.3.0~rc2 only runs 27 tests, while 3.4.0~rc6 runs 251. More on this below. > We should not make the test suite artificially pass if it's giving us > accurate information about the (non-)usability of the package. But if you've analyzed the failures and > found this to be true, please let me know. That's a good point. I did not intend my fix to be a long-term solution, and should have made that clear in my changelog entry. > The other possibilities here are: > > - The old php-imagick in xenial is already buggy and crashes in the same >
