[Bug 1639381] Re: SRU 0.11 tracking bug

2016-11-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package ubuntu-image - 0.11+16.04ubuntu1

---
ubuntu-image (0.11+16.04ubuntu1) xenial; urgency=medium

  * SRU tracking bug LP: #1639381
  * Sort the structures in a volume by their offset, even if the offset is
defined implicitly (i.e. not present in the gadget.yaml). Also, check
for any structure conflicts and raise a ValueError in that case.
(LP:1631423)
  * offset-write arguments will only accept 32 bit integers. (LP:1617443)
  * Add a better manpage.  (LP:1638386)
  * Tracebacks in the `snap prepare-image` command are suppressed unless
--debug is given. However, the failure is still logged. (LP:1621445)
  * Handle -but ignore- the gadget.yaml `defaults` section.  (LP:1632449)
  * Structure ids are disallowed on mbr volumes. (LP:1632724)
  * The package can still be built if python3-debian is not available.

[Bug 1611074] Re: Reformatting of ephemeral drive fails on resize of Azure VM

2016-11-17 Thread Paul Meyer
Thanks Scott for the thorough explanation.

To answer your question: I don't know that there is any such property.
I'm asking around to see if there is, but let's assume 'no' for now.
Aside from resize, we run into the same situation after a VM needs to be
moved to another node. In that case, the ephemeral drive is also
recreated (and reformatted ntfs). So any indication we decide to rely on
should include this situation. The common factor is that the disk is
completely new.

I think you're right that we might need to wait for the disk to appear. I
assume that b) was done for other reasons than this bug, or perhaps to not
delay mounting too long?
An alternative could be to actively unmount the ntfs partition before mkfs. Of
course that comes with its own host of race conditions, but the success rate
may be higher.

[Bug 1642662] [NEW] Handle EGL alternatives and use different drivers for the LTS stacks

2016-11-17 Thread Alberto Milone
Public bug reported:

A recent security update of the nvidia driver provided new EGL
libraries, which are not handled by the current gpu-manager (ubuntu-
drivers-common) and nvidia-prime in 14.04. This problem is fixed in
Xenial or newer.

ubuntu-drivers-common also does not distinguish between the different
LTS stacks, and this is a major problem on Intel+Nvidia hybrid systems,
as anything running stacks older than 14.04.5 will require using the
intel driver with SNA acceleration, whereas the rest should use the
modesetting driver. Boot parameters can also be passed to use other
driver combinations (for unsupported use cases).

[Bug 1642068] Re: snapd memory sizes grows huge over time

2016-11-17 Thread Gustavo Niemeyer
If it never stops growing, it's obviously a leak.. somewhere! If it
stabilizes after a while, then it's a side effect of Go being a non-
deterministic garbage collected language. Again, data.

If the goal is testing this particular code path, it'd be best to have a
tiny test case exercising it, rather than doing something like "snap
find".

[Bug 1642664] [NEW] Fix menu navigation

2016-11-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Public bug reported:

A)
In all Menus provide shortcuts for the menu entries.
Like when having "Done" and "Cancel" mark a Character like "D" and "C" and
allow users to shortcut with e.g. ALT+C ALT+D

A bit like it is done in Suse yast.
It is suppores to be a fast and slim installer, so tihs makes it faster.

Especially in longer lists this is the only way to get to e.g. cancel.
So if for example the initial language List would be way longer to get to cancel

B)
Masks which take input fields should "go to the next field" on enter.
So e.g. in the user config one has to enter:
Real Name -> then go down -> Username -> then go down -> ...
Users would expect that this works as well (just faster in the fingers, since
they are used to)
Real Name -> enter -> Username -> enter -> ...

C)
In longer lists it would be great if there would be a wrap around so that going
"up" from the topmost item would warp you to the last entry (or the menu
buttons below whichever applies)

D) You did a great job simplifying things.
But the language selection could still be optimized.
Eventually you have to start with some language anyway.
So far you choose english.
There has to be no menu.
If you implment A) in this bug you could on all panels provide a "change
Langauge" button so a user can change.
Since most users would rely on just one language which is english anyway they
have "saved" one menu to select from.
I guess starting from the currents system default language by default would be
great.
On top you could provide a commandline switch for the language - in case
someone doesn't understand anything at all - but that switch is probably
overengineering.

[Bug 1642652] [NEW] Install progress should display curtin reporter output

2016-11-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Public bug reported:

When installing on system with slow IO, there's not enough information
reported back to keep user confidence that things are still going OK. We
should have a separate call out to the reporter to fetch the current
status and publish that to the install progress screen.

With PR #124 merged, we're back to a two-stage curtin install and
observing the output of curtin in the progress view. Some of the next
bit of work is related to curtin itself w.r.t what level of messages
come out. We may in the mean time apply a filter to the stream and
classify what's happening:

Stage 1: Curtin Install

Configuring Installer
Preparing Storage
Installing OS
Configuring OS

Stage 2: Curtin Postinstall

Customizing OS

[Bug 1642660] [NEW] subiquity-runinstaller --help is dangerous

2016-11-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Public bug reported:

It might just be too early for manpages, so so that is ok (for now) :-)

Three of the tools have at least a --help text - good.
But subiquity-runinstaller ignores this completely.

No help, No "unknown option" it starts to do something right away -
which could be dangerous.

Basic - but still a bug - example:

subiquity-runinstaller --help
Installing required packages: ovmf qemu-system-x86
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:

[Bug 1642655] [NEW] Revise UI scaling

2016-11-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Public bug reported:

A)
There is a certain minimum console size requirement.
I tried it on a 12x8 console and - obviously - it wasn't usable in any way.
We should add a check for this and gracefully exit if the console is unsuitably
small.

For the case that we don't get any console info we should try going on - as
there might be enough weird ones which still work.
But if it is known to be too small - I'd say we should exit gracefully.

B)
Also if a console is really huge it can get ugly.
The scaling is nice, but this flexibility makes UI testing hard.
The only thing that really grows is the progress bar, everything else is just
characters.
So why not defining some upper limit like classic 80x40 console or 172x41 which
seems common for a full-hd screen in default resolution.
If now the current console is way bigger just take the upper-left + max console
size and leave the rest blank.
This would avoid some hard to test max scaling issues.

[Bug 1642646] [NEW] Missing dependency on cloud-image-utils

2016-11-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Public bug reported:

I'm testing on a pristine xenial and found one more dependency missing
for image based testing.

The failure is rather readable (thanks for that!)

/home/paelzer/download/maas/daily/wily/amd64/20160106/root.tar.gz
no mount-image-callback. install cloud-image-utils.
'[' 1 '!=' 0 ']'

tee -a geninstaller.log
++ date +%s
echo '1452252540: ERROR: Failed to convert ephemeral to roottar'

Fix should be easy as well, make "cloud-image-utils" a dependency that
is installed on install_deps.

[Bug 1642068] Re: snapd memory sizes grows huge over time

2016-11-17 Thread Gustavo Niemeyer
@Colin, Sorry if it sounds different, but this is not a wish of mine.
It's just about respecting the data we have. Not even Valgrind itself is
reporting this as a leak. It's saying "block possibly lost". Unless we
have either very basic empirical evidence of a leak (e.g. offending code
alone in a loop grows the process larger), or someone that disagrees
with the assessment I've made above reading the code, we shouldn't
regard this as a leak.

[Bug 1642650] [NEW] incorrect wrapping of network device info

2016-11-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Public bug reported:

When a network device information string is longer than the available
space on the current line, the widget happily wraps and pushing
everything down a row; however, this produces an offset which makes the
information displayed incomplete. The next nic in the list gets the
previous nic's ipv6 connection status display.

We need to provide fixed sized widgets so we don't change the layout
even when the information is too much to display.

Squished display:

 Network connections

PR #120 address this partially by limiting the width Vendor and Model. It
doesn't address the auto-scaling UI built-in; rather that will need some effort
to force a specific minimum window size at start up and exit if it's not
available.

[Bug 1642645] [NEW] Missing MAC address for BeagleBoneBlack

2016-11-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Public bug reported:

There are lots of reasons why the MAC may be needed before you can
configure the networking on the device. For example, you might have to
set up DHCP or enable access via your router.

I don't see that when I boot the BeagleBoardBlack, but it could be because of
a NIC related kernel oops. I'll check again once that bug is fixed.

[Bug 1642651] [NEW] Revise error messages to make them obvious

2016-11-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Public bug reported:

We already have color for the buttons (green).
We should mark error cases e.g. in red.

So when for example "ERROR: already mounted" shows up in the mask
"Partition, format, and mount /dev/sda" we could not only show it but
make it red until the user enters something new in there.

Also we could store a status along that until the user enters something
new there (removes the red) we will not accept the input.

[Bug 1642643] [NEW] Shutter Forgets FTP Credentials for Uploading Screenshots

2016-11-17 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

Every two or three weeks, Shutter forgets the ftp credentials that I've
set for uploading screenshots and making them available via a website
URL.

It is a good thing I've backed up my home folder. I'm able to fix the issue
each time by replacing this folder with my backup copy of that same folder:
/home/user/.shutter

So, the .shutter folder is getting corrupted every few weeks, requiring
me to replace it with a my backup copy that is not corrupted.

[Bug 1642068] Re: snapd memory sizes grows huge over time

2016-11-17 Thread John Lenton
Could you try again with this one? This one is dynamically linked but
has an Environment line in /lib/systemd/system/snapd.service to force it
to use the Go resolver.

And, lastly, if you can remove that line from the service file and try
again, then it should use the cgo resolver.

[Bug 1642634] [NEW] indicator-datetime uses excessive memory

2016-11-17 Thread Robie Basak
Public bug reported:

On my Aquaris 4.5, OTA-13, indicator-datetime
15.10+15.04.20160820.1-0ubuntu1, it uses too much RSS. A typical RSS is
315892, almost three times as much as unity8.

I believe this is an OTA regression. I'm not sure if it regressed from
OTA-11 or OTA-12.

Just now, I got caught in an oom killer loop with constant killing of
unity8-dash because of this, making my phone unusable. I had to kill
indicator-datetime manually. It then restarted automatically and now
uses 80456 RSS only. I see bug 1633319 exists complaining about a memory
leak. It's not exactly the same version since mine is
15.10+15.04.20160820.1-0ubuntu1 and that one is
15.10+16.10.20160820.1-0ubuntu1. But perhaps the upstream versions are
the same or something? Perhaps the two are dupes, but I'll let someone
more familiar make that determination.

I have only a handful of alarms (perhaps five on average; rarely more)
but I do have my Google calendar syncing with perhaps hundreds of
events. However, there's no reason that this should cause indicator-
datetime to use more RSS; it shouldn't be keeping these in memory.
