[Bug 1653327] [NEW] 100% cpu usage with 4.8 kernel after upgrade to 16.10

2016-12-30 Thread mscdex
Public bug reported:

After upgrading my Sony Vaio Pro 13 to Lubuntu 16.10 and logging in for
the first time, I noticed the fans were spinning crazy fast. Since
nothing was open and I hadn't done anything since the upgrade yet, I
looked at top. There it showed systemd-journal and rsyslog using 100%
CPU.

I looked at /var/log/syslog and there was a flood of messaging
continually being appended of the form:

ACPI Error: no handler or method for gpe ... disabling event ...

The system was still somewhat usable, so I tried checking for updates,
but there wasn't anything to update. Since I never encountered this
error before, I tried installing a mainline kernel (4.9) from the Ubuntu
mainline kernel PPA. I booted into the new, mainline kernel and no more
100% CPU usage. The only problem with using this kernel is that I can't
use VirtualBox anymore because dkms has a compilation issue when
building against the 4.9 kernel.

Before upgrading to 16.10, I was using Lubuntu 16.04 with whatever the
latest 4.4 kernel was at the time that 16.10 was released, which also
worked just fine.

The current (as of this writing) 4.8 kernel that is still causing
problems is 4.8.0-32.

[Bug 1585863] Re: WiFi malfunction after suspend & resume stress - sudo wpa_cli scan required to fix it.

2016-12-30 Thread Tanner Blomster
I am having this problem now as well. A while back I used a script to
restart network manager service after resume and this fixed all issues.
Yesterday I tried to see if this issue has been fixed or not. After
disabling the service with systemd I tested it with a two hour or so
suspend. After waking up the computer was still connected to the AP and
I was able to browse the web but the network manager icon was the
Ethernet one and it didn't list any APs nearby to connect to. I
disconnected manually and was unable to connect to an AP since none were
listed. I re-enabled the script with systemd and all is working again.
So from my end it seems the connection is still going but network
manager UI is not working like it should.

budgie-desktop-environment (0.7.1) zesty; urgency=medium

  * New upstream release (LP: #1652594)
  * Updated Panel configuration
- AppIndicator Applet is now a default applet (#35)
  * Hide renamed zesty ImageMagick Icon
  * Replace gnome-terminal with Terminix (#33)
- update plank dockitems to switch from gnome-terminal to Terminix
- update budgie-desktop-environment gsettings override
  * enable CTRL+ALT_BKSP key sequence to force-end the X-session (#9)
  * Packaging Changes:
- move the majority of dependencies and recommendations for the
standard install to the meta package ubuntu-budgie-desktop
- change the section from meta to misc since this package is the
customisation binaries for the standard and minimal desktop
  installs
- Rework packaging to accommodate a minimal budgie-desktop

panel.ini installed only for the standard installer; file moved
from binary package budgie-desktop-common thus needs breaks/

packages for users upgrading from yakkety to zesty
- update budgie-desktop-common to include common components for
  both budgie-desktop-minimal and budgie-desktop-environment
- change budgie-desktop-common and budgie-desktop-environment
dependencies to ensure icon-themes and fallback icon theme are
  installed (LP: #1652391)
- gsettings overrides exist for both installers
- for both installers ensure we explicitly specify full paths
- false positive lintian-override moved under the standard installer
since plank is only installed here.
- up the debhelper version with standard Debian practice
- Add postinst and postrm scripts to deal with Terminix
  configuration
- up the build standards version

[Bug 1653324] [NEW] No wireless networks visible on resume from suspend. Erroneous Wired connection icon in nm-applet

2016-12-30 Thread Alan Pope  濾
Public bug reported:

As others have reported this I just woke my Thinkpad 450 to find no
network. I resolved this by manually reconnecting with "nmcli c up id
" where was taken from the output of "nmcli
c" on the same machine.

Steps to reproduce:-

This is an intermittent issue which for me happens once in a while, but
not super often to be annoying. For others it appears to happen often. I
suspend my laptop multiple times daily and don't see this more than once
per couple of weeks, or sometimes once a month.

* Use laptop in one location on wifi
* Suspend (shut lid) laptop
* Resume (open lid) in same location (so same wifi networks nearby)

Expected behaviour:-

* Network come back up

Actual behaviour:-

* No network connectivity
* nm-applet icon shows the two arrows as if a wired connection is made
* No or few wireless erroneous wireless networks shown nearby

* Workaround 1 (reconnect from command line)

nmcli c

(lists wireless networks, look for yours in the "NAME" column, use it in
command below)

nmcli c up id NAME

* Workaround 2 (restart entire network stack)

This AskUbuntu question has one solution
http://askubuntu.com/questions/761180/wifi-doesnt-work-after-suspend-
after-16-04-upgrade#761220

Further information:-

Output of nmcli m while suspending and resuming:-

wlp3s0: unmanaged
Connectivity is now 'full'
Networkmanager is now in the 'connected (local only)' state
enp0s25: unavailable
wlp3s0: unavailable
wlp3s0: disconnected

Output of nmcli after using workaround 1 above:-

Connectivity is now 'none'
Networkmanager is now in the 'connecting' state
wlp3s0: connecting (configuring)
wlp3s0: using connection 'popey_2.4g_bed'

[Bug 1653323] [NEW] Severe screen flicker on Unity when terminal maximized

2016-12-30 Thread Damon Lynch
Public bug reported:

The screen experiences severe flicker when using Nvidia 375.26 on a GTX
1070 in 16.10, Unity Desktop -- but only when the terminal is in the top
left of the screen or maximized, and is full of text.

I made a video illustrating the problem: http://damonlynch.net/share
/Ubuntu1610screen-flicker.mp4

Driver is from the "graphics-drivers" PPA.

At this point I don't know if it's a hardware problem or software
problem -- I've never seen anything like it before. I've ruled out the
DisplayPort cable as a problem, because it exhibits the same problem
with two different cables.

The LCD is a Dell UP3017.

[Bug 1653321] [NEW] Upon boot, am presented with blank screen

2016-12-30 Thread AmEv
Public bug reported:

I recently helped my brother upgrade his monitor setup and video card
from an ASUS 750Ti and single Dell 3007WFP to the MSI RX 470 and two
additional Dell SE198WFP on each side. (The 30" had its backlight die,
another story for another time, so in the meantime, I've got a Samsung
2253LW in the menatime. I am still using the original dual-link DVI
cable that came with the Dell monitor.) To hook up the side monitors, we
used some HDMI-DVI cables. (I need to check if the cables are single-
link or dual-link.) Installation and orientation setup was successful in
Windows 10, but in Ubuntu, all that happens is it appears on the side
monitors, duplicated, in 1024*768.

Originally, I thought it was the open-source drivers not communicating
with the card properly, so I installed the AMDGPU-PRO drivers off of
ATI's Web site. Unfortunately, not only did it not resolve the incorrect
resolution/incorrect physical orientation issue, but now Unity is not
loading correctly. I am able to right-click on a black desktop and open
applications (such as a browser, which I'm doing right now), but I have
no window decorations, and I am unable to move or resize the window.

Display settings under unity-system-settings only says that "internal
display" is connected (laughable), doesn't say anything about the
Samsung monitor, and provides no option to not mirror the Dell monitors.

Recently, I tried the suggestion at http://askubuntu.com/questions/17381
/unity-doesnt-load-no-launcher-no-dash-appears, and even reverted to the
open-source driver, but that didn't resolve the issue.

[Bug 1653320] [NEW] Chromium stopped understanding HiDPI in GNOME?Wayland

2016-12-30 Thread Richard
Public bug reported:

On upgrade to 55.0.2883.87-0ubuntu1.16.10.1330
Chromium stopped understanding that it was on a low DPI display in a HiDPI
environment
- impact: all fonts 2x too high
- this used to work
- getaround: launch like: chromium-browser --force-device-scale-factor=0.5
  - causes chrome and popups to be 50% too small
  - browsed content is correct size on low DPI displays

Chromium also decides to launch all windows on display 3, which is the lowest
resolution display
- It used to open windows at the location they were last at

I think this worked in 55.0.2883.87-0ubuntu0.16.10.1328
It certainly worked in 53.0.2785.143-0ubuntu1.1307

Chad, thanks for your work on this. 55.0.2883.87 (Developer Build) Built
on Ubuntu, running on Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit) working everywhere I've

Richard, NPR's site may not be a good test since https://npr.org/ uses a
wildcard cert for *.npr.org with no alternate name for npr.org and while
https://www.npr.org/ works fine, the site redirects to http://npr.org/

An example of a site done well by someone competent is Troy Hunt's
invaluable https://haveibeenpwned.com/ which has Certificate
Transparency for the site and several resources (Google) as well as
CloudFlare.

Certificate transparency can be tested by browsing to https://npr.org

For broken, this will display an intermediate full-page warning with a
Back to safety action button

Other sites may have difficulty in loading resources and display huge unscaled
images, garbled content or missing JavaScript functions
- this is likely to happen if proceed (Unsafe) is selected
- the site may use a large number of domain names making it practically
impossible to browse the site

hsts sites cannot be browser at all.

[Bug 1647204] Re: 1.8.0-2 FTBFS in zesty 17.04

2016-12-30 Thread Colin Watson
Sounds like the problem is that this build leaves processes hanging
around from its tests. Unfortunately this currently causes builds to
hang, basically because launchpad-buildd uses sbuild's sudo mode rather
than its schroot mode. So the hang is a known bug in launchpad-buildd,
but it should still be possible to fix this: make sure that the test
suite cleans up all its processes on exit, which is something that
should be actionable with a bit of care.

[Bug 1653309] Re: qtdmm

2016-12-30 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1653309/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[Bug 1640456] Re: Switching to USB sound device stops USB mouse clicks from registering #2

2016-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
jth:

>"Hi It's not invalid so it should be set Fix Committed"

Here on Launchpad, that's not how it works. Specifically, this isn't Fix
Committed, as you already advised the issue is resolved for you in
17.04.

"until it's released and as Fix Released to indicate the version as
probably 17.04."

Whether or not a version of Ubuntu is development/stable/LTS, or
speculating to probabilities has no bearing here.

"If it is set to invalid it would not show up on searches that is
critical to find and workaround the issue"

The Status has no impact on searchability on a publicly available
resource. One can search via Google, Launchpad itself, etc. and find
this report regardless.

>"and that the fix is on its way."

Feature and bug fix backports, security fixes, etc. are performed as a
matter of due course in Ubuntu development, irrespective of if anyone
asks for one.

>"I do not need it to be backported since there is an easy workaround.
But it needs to be tracked so the workaround can be found until it is
released correctly. You need to decide if it is worth to do the
backport."

Backporting because you need it is not my decision. It's yours.

>"I will help you to verify if you decide to to release it in a
backport. The issue will make affected system unusable so if you ask me
if it is worth a backport I would say yes since most users will not be
able to workaround the issue by themselves as you and I can."

To advise, operating on speculation isn't how backports are determined.
Despite this, since you don't need a backport, this bug report is being
closed due to your last comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1640456/comments/3
regarding this being fixed with an update. For future reference you can
manage the status of your own bugs by clicking on the current status in
the yellow line and then choosing a new status in the revealed drop down
box. You can learn more about bug statuses at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status. Thank you again for taking the time
to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please submit any
future bugs you may find.

[Bug 1653295] Re: Chromium and Chrome flickering (SNA Xorg issues)

2016-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jacob Doherty, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

1) To see if this is already resolved, could you please test
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise to the results?

2) To clarify, does the following provide a WORKAROUND:
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel
sudo rm /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf (for those who created this
file before)
reboot

3) Does using UXA instead of SNA provide a WORKAROUND?

4) Did this issue not occur in a previous release of Ubuntu, or
Chromium/Chrome?

5) Could you please provide the full computer model as noted on the
sticker of the computer itself (not from the Bug Description, or the
result of a terminal command)?

6) If you undo all of the non-default kernel parameters you are using,
does this influence this issue?

[Bug 1620636] Re: Fails to pair with Bose QC35 headphones

2016-12-30 Thread Alexis Laporte
I have a Sony MDR 1000X, which is similar to the Bose.

I have the same problem and tried the solutions people here mentionned
(I had the same choppy streaming when forcing ControllerMode = bredr).

The only difference is that my headset «pairs» but there's no sound
after it.

I can send any output log that might be needed.

Thanks.

[Bug 1640456] Re: Switching to USB sound device stops USB mouse clicks from registering #2

2016-12-30 Thread jth
Hi

It's not invalid so it should be set Fix Committed until it's released
and as Fix Released to indicate the version as probably 17.04.

If it is set to invalid it would not show up on searches that is
critical to find and workaround the issue and that the fix is on its
way.

I do not need it to be backported since there is an easy workaround. But
it needs to be tracked so the workaround can be found until it is
released correctly. You need to decide if it is worth to do the
backport. I will help you to verify if you decide to to release it in a
backport.

The issue will make affected system unusable so if you ask me if it is
worth a backport I would say yes since most users will not be able to
workaround the issue by themselves as you and I can.

One will undo all WORKAROUNDs and custom patches, and then install the

[Bug 1653009] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 fails to boot from Sandisk usb stick with latest kernels

2016-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Daro, the next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel 4.4.0-45.66 to
4.4.0-47.68 in order to identify the last good kernel commit, followed
immediately by the first bad one. This will allow for a more expedited
analysis of the root cause of your issue. Could you please do this
following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions, or providing a commit
from a kernel version bisect is not fully commit bisecting.

Also, the kernel release names are irrelevant for the purposes of
bisecting.

It is most helpful that after the fix commit (not kernel version) has
been identified, you then mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your help.

Roger:

Thank you for pointing this out.

The link for anyone's reference on this is here:

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds_5_0

I note they are up to the extension pack ver. 5.0.30 for all versions.

I have downloaded the suggested 5.0.24 and ran it successfully.

Best regards...

Yes this is the correct solution for now. Go to Oracle's site, navigate
to Old Builds and then select the virtualbox-ext-pack, version 5.0.24,
it's the same file for all Architectures, download it then open it with
VirtualBox, using the context menu and then VirtualBox will happily
download it and install it. I think it would be advisable to return the
ownership of /usr/share to root, because of keeping the system safe. If
you have taken ownership of /usr/share/sounds because of playing the
Login sound or System sounds you'll have to take ownership of that
folder only again.

[Bug 990214] Re: Wrong keyboard layout by graphical login

2016-12-30 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I'm not quite sure about the history, but it strikes me that there may
be some misconceptions floating around in the above discussion.

On my Ubuntu 16.10 I

* removed all keyboard layout related user settings,
* set XKBLAYOUT="se" in /etc/default/keyboard, and
* rebooted.

The resulting effective layout on lightdm-gtk-greeter was Swedish as
expected.

Please note that the language chooser shown by default in lightdm-gtk-
greeter is about setting the session's display language, and has nothing
to do with keyboard layouts.

You can enable a keyboard layout switcher; please see
 including the comments.

[Bug 1652757] Re: package libavformat57:amd64 7:3.0.2-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should reinstall it before attempting configuration

2016-12-30 Thread Andreas Cadhalpun
Your logs show that while you were trying to install chromium,
unattended-upgrades was running in the background and that failed, so the
failure is unrelated to chromium.
The unattended-upgrades update was also tried on the preceding days and also
failed, but unfortunately it is not clear from the logs what the actual problem
was.

Please provide (the relevant part of) /var/log/apt/term.log, so that
this can be debugged further.

In general, it is a bad idea to report multiple problems in one bug report,
because it makes tracking the bugs (and their fixes) much more complicated.
Thus please open a separate against ubuntu-software bug about your second
problem.

[Bug 1606369] Re: Compiz ‘Thumbnail Window Previews’ artefacts (further fix +)

2016-12-30 Thread Csaba Nemethi
After some more testing I came to the conclusion that proportionally
balanced shadows (as proposed by David Black) will result in improved
appearance when using a light theme (and will be OK for dark themes,
too). Also, with that fix in effect, it is sufficient to change the
value of org.compiz.profiles.mate.plugins.thumbnail.border from 12 to 15
(instead of 19) in order to completely eliminate the reported artefact.
Consequently:

Alternative solution revisited: Apply the fix proposed by David Black
AND change the value of
org.compiz.profiles.mate.plugins.thumbnail.border from 12 to 15.

2016-12-30 Thread Andrew
ok, i suppose i could. Though i must say that i had avoided trying the
intel_idle.max_cstate=1 as it seemed like a hack rather than a true fix,
though i guess since the root of the problem is a hardware bug a hack is
the best one can hope for.

I can remove my current patched kernel and go back to an older one, but
how do i actually enable intel_idle.max_cstate=1 ??

And if it does work, how do i then compile the debug patch and install
that? The links you provided just look like text files to me.

an update to your computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is
available (1.20). When you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate how does this improve the
situation?

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Also, you don't have to create a new report.

It is most helpful that after the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still
reproducible:
1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an
apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2) Please make a comment specifically advising on how this improves the
situation.
3) Please mark this report Status Confirmed.

If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your help.

[Bug 1579374] Re: amdgpu causes NULL pointer dereference when trying to use Topaz (Radeon R7 M265) GPU

2016-12-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Tags removed: kernel-fixed-upstream
** Tags added: needs-upstream-testing yakkety

** Description changed:

  A Dell Inspiron 5448 / 0YDTG3 laptop (BIOS A06 10/12/2015), which used
to work well with Ubuntu trusty and Ubuntu wily releases (using fglrx
driver), has an issue in Xenial where when the amdgpu driver tries to
activate the Radeon GPU, a NULL pointer dereference occurs, causing the
caller process to hang. This practically causes the system to hang when
  trying a logoff or shutdown.

The bug can be easily reproduced by calling:
  DRI_PRIME=1 glxgears

Which hangs the glxgears process and causes the stacktrace attached below.
