2017-03-16 Thread Mike Stroud
After much googling I found that the only fix was to upgrade to lubuntu
16.04. I did that and the problem went away.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Bug 1645141] Re: Please update udev rules for newer Steam builds

2017-03-16 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  Impact
  --
- Steam needs new udev rules to interact with their Steam controller and HTC
Vive. The udev rules also allow Steam to update the firmware in these devices.
+ Steam needs new udev rules to interact with their Steam controller, the HTC
Vive and the PlayStation 4 DualShock controller. The udev rules also allow
Steam to update the firmware in these devices.

Steam won't work properly if these rules are not updated.

  Test Case
  -
If you have this hardware, you can test that the hardware works with Steam
and that your hardware has the latest firmware.

Otherwise, for 16.10, this should update
  /lib/udev/rules.d/60-HTC-Vive-perms.rules and
  /lib/udev/rules.d/99-steam-controller-perms.rules

99-HTC-Vive-perms.rules has been renamed to 60-HTC-Vive-perms.rules

For 14.04 and 16.04, it should update
  /lib/udev/rules.d/99-steam-perms.rules
  and add
  /lib/udev/rules.d/60-HTC-Vive-perms-Ubuntu.rules

  Regression Potential

Low. These rules have been shipped directly by Steam since 1.0.0.54 released
at the end of October 2016.

  Other Info
  --
There is a very complicated conflict between the steam packages shipped in
Debian (and fake-synced to Ubuntu) and those shipped in Valve's own repository
which is automatically enabled if you install Steam directly from Steam's
website.

I am working to try to fix that conflict but it may take some time and
it may involve adding new packages in Ubuntu SRUs. So there will
probably be another SRU but let's get this easier update taken care of
  first.

For the 14.04 and 16.04 SRUs, I ensured that the udev rules have
different file names than the files shipped by Ubuntu 16.10+ and Valve
to not make the file conflict and LP: #1638463 any worse.

  Original Bug Report
  ---
  According to
https://steamcommunity.com/app/353370/discussions/0/490123197956024380/ newer
builds of Steam post November 22, 2016 have new udev rules that have to be
implemented by distributions. Please update the steam package for Trusty and
above to accommodate these rules.

[Bug 1665698] Re: /etc/qemu-ifup not allowed by apparmor

2017-03-16 Thread Logan V
Also in regard to: "Reading your Deny log again comm="qemu-system-x86".
Hmm, could it be that you run the "new" openstack against the "old" libvirt?
I see you said "with libvirt and non-openstack bits sourced from
cloud-archive", but then I'd have expected the apparmor fail against libvirt -
if any."

This is Newton UCA on Xenial running against stable/newton Nova. The
openstack bits happen to be sourced from upstream (non UCA), but if UCA
is pulling in stable/newton release tags at some point then I'm sure it
will hit this eventually too.

[Bug 1625846] Re: Xmir -rootless: Firefox menus pop up then close right away

2017-03-16 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
I think bug 1671771 is fundamentally the wrong solution (to this
problem; it does need to be fixed).

The problem here is that XMir is not behaving like a spec-compliant X11
window manager. Unless we want to require Mir servers to implement X11
window management, this is not something that we can do with extra Mir
support.

One relevant section of one of the relevant X11 protocols is
https://tronche.com/gui/x/icccm/sec-4.html#s-4.1.7

Specifically - Firefox is using the Locally Active focus model. It has
the focus attribute set to “true” in the WM_HINTS, and has set
WM_TAKE_FOCUS on its window.

This means that it (a) expects to receive focus (and receives focus
in/focus out events) but (b) only ever expects to be given focus to its
top-level window, and will manually manage the focus of its subwindows
itself.

XMir is in a position to do this - it doesn't matter which of the
client's windows Mir thinks has input focus. As long as *any* of the
client's windows have input focus XMir will receive input events and can
set the X11 focus as appropriate.

2017-03-16 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
(The reason why bug 1671771 is not going to fix this is that Firefox¹
*may* set input focus to one of its subwindows, and will behave weirdly
if that doesn't work. You can't just set “no focus” on the Mir surface
corresponding to Firefox's subwindow and then delegate to Mir's input
focus.)

¹: And, if not Firefox, then there'll definitely be *some* X11 app which
does this ☺

[Bug 1645141] Re: Please update udev rules for newer Steam builds

2017-03-16 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

- According to
- https://steamcommunity.com/app/353370/discussions/0/490123197956024380/
- newer builds of Steam post November 22, 2016 have new udev rules that
- have to be implemented by distributions. Please update the steam package
- for Trusty and above to accommodate these rules.
+ Impact
+ --
+ Steam needs new udev rules to interact with their Steam controller and HTC
Vive. The udev rules also allow Steam to update the firmware in these devices.
+
+ Steam won't work properly if these rules are not updated.
+
+ Test Case
+ -
+ If you have this hardware, you can test that the hardware works with Steam
and that your hardware has the latest firmware.
+
+ Otherwise, for 16.10, this should update
+ /lib/udev/rules.d/60-HTC-Vive-perms.rules and
+ /lib/udev/rules.d/99-steam-controller-perms.rules
+
+ 99-HTC-Vive-perms.rules has been renamed to 60-HTC-Vive-perms.rules
+
+ For 14.04 and 16.04, it should update
+ /lib/udev/rules.d/99-steam-perms.rules
+ and add
+ /lib/udev/rules.d/60-HTC-Vive-perms-Ubuntu.rules
+
+ Regression Potential
+
+ Low. These rules have been shipped directly by Steam since 1.0.0.54 released
at the end of October 2016.
+
+ Other Info
+ --
+ There is a very complicated conflict between the steam packages shipped in
Debian (and fake-synced to Ubuntu) and those shipped in Valve's own repository
which is automatically enabled if you install Steam directly from Steam's
website.
+
+ I am working to try to fix that conflict but it may take some time and
+ it may involve adding new packages in Ubuntu SRUs. So there will
+ probably be another SRU but let's get this easier update taken care of
+ first.
+
+ For the 14.04 and 16.04 SRUs, I ensured that the udev rules have
+ different file names than the files shipped by Ubuntu 16.10+ and Valve
+ to not make the file conflict and LP: #1638463 any worse.
+
+ Original Bug Report
+ ---

[Bug 1589210] Re: snap remove "core" on classic not allowed

2017-03-16 Thread Florin Andrei
Still no luck:

# snap remove core
error: cannot remove "core": snap "core" is not removable

Since I enabled snap, mounting USB volumes, either automatically or
manually, is broken. And I can't even get rid of snap. Effectively snap
has broken my system. This is really, really bad.

Speaking in general, disallowing users to revert things such as package
installation is an extremely bad idea; it leads to frustration and a
poor user experience.

Also affects 14.04 where I kept getting missing letters, or missing

downgraded to 4.2-lts wily kernel. And yes I checked the memory was not
faulty.

There's been quite a bit of talk about the Linux 4.4 version having a
bug with Intel driver with graphics corruption or missing letters on the
screen:

[Bug 1673650] [NEW] Single window randomly freezes (no input possible)

2017-03-16 Thread Felix Schuett
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version:
Description:Zorin OS 12.1 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS)
Release:12

Package:
gdm3:
  Installed: 3.18.3-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 3.18.3-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 3.18.3-0ubuntu2 500
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Description:
This bug makes lets a window freeze, however the application inside it does not
freeze. It is not possible to focus the window anymore, nor to resize it. The
cursor does not change the icon to the resize icon and the window doesn't
respond to clicks or hovering events. However, the application itself is fine -
for example, Firefox will continue to play music. Alt+F4 to exit the
application still works. It has happened to me in Thunar, Sublime Text and
Firefox and the Gnome Shell, so I don't think the bug has to do with the
application. The title bar buttons may still work on the frozen window (see
below).

The window can be made responsible again by opening a second window and
having it partially, not completely (!) overlap the frozen window or by
resizing the window (does however not work with Super+Right shortcuts
for tiling, you have to move the mouse and click the "restore maximized
window" button). The bug often occurs after restoring a window to the
maximized state after it has been pushed into the background for a
prolonged time (as far as I can tell).

For example, if I put Firefox into the background to play music, leave
it in maximized state, open a text editor maximized so that Firefox is
completely hidden, come back 20 minutes later and bring Firefox in the
foreground, Firefox is almost (not always) guaranteed to be frozen, but
the music still plays.

It is possible that two windows freeze at the same time, for example, I
had two instances of Thunar (file manager) in the background, both
frozen and the title bar buttons didn't work either.

The bug occurs in several stages (not sure if two bugs or the same). About one
hour after logging in (as far as I can tell), some windows (noticably the ones
in the background, meaning not visible or completely hidden behind another
window) become unresponsive. Sometimes the title bar still works, at which
point you can unfreeze the window by clicking the "restore" button in the title
bar. In this stage, the window is only unresponsive to clicks and mouse focus
events.
Sometimes, this isn't possible either because the application has no window
decoration or because the title bar is not responding, too. In this stage the
window will not respond to a cursor hovering over the edge of the window. The
cursor won't change. Then you have to open another application window and have
it partially overlap the frozen window. The frozen window will immediately
become responsive again.
After stage 2 has happened about 5 times, the cursor will start to click about
100 pixels to the left. This has happened twice in different applications, not
sure if really related and a bug or just a "quirk" (?). The cursor will show
and the application is responsive, but the recorded click will be around 100
pixels to the left. An application restart fixes this problem.

The bug occurs randomly, I sadly can't give an exact estimate for when
it happens. It's just that when it starts, it will return in about 10 -
20 minutes after first occurence. I can't say if this happens on other
distributions or if this is a known bug. Zorin OS 12 is Ubuntu 16.04
with a themed GNOME window manager.

[Bug 1673652] [NEW] SRU juju-mongodb 3.2.12-0ubuntu1 to yakkety and xenial

2017-03-16 Thread Anastasia
Public bug reported:

juju-mongodb 3.2.12-0ubuntu1 is in zesty. It provides several
performance and stability fixes. It also allows us to drop patches to
support rare architectures.

[SRU Information]

juju-core has a stable release exception, including for major version
updates, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JujuUpdates.

[Impact]

This will affect juju only, juju controllers specifically.

Biggest impact bug that requires new microversion:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/juju/+bug/1670891

[QA/Testing]

Juju QA will verify that new controllers work with the new mongo on
all archs for both yakkety and xenial. Existing controller will be
upgraded to the new version and verified. This will be tested both in
Juju CI and manually.

[Bug 1616695] Re: Bluetooth signal is unusably poor

2017-03-16 Thread JoaoH
It would seem to me that with the recent boom in BT devices, that the
"importance" would be a little higher than "medium". I have a $250.00
set of Headphones that is basically useless and have to tether with an
audio cable. I am to the point that I may have to go back top Windows
and run the Linux apps in VM, it's that big of a deal breaker.

I am just saying...

[Bug 1673350] Re: dm-queue-length module is not included in installer/initramfs

2017-03-16 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ Multipath users using EMC XtremIO storage as boot device or at install time
may run into this issue. With the module unavailable the device is more often
than not unavailable. Any users changing path selector to 'queue-length' with
other storage devices may also be affected.
+
+ [Test case]
+ 1) Install on multipath system using EMC XtremIO storage / OR:
+ a) Start d-i install on qemu with multipath enabled
+ b) exit to d-i menu
+ c) modify /etc/multipath.conf to define path selector as 'queue-length' for
the local qemu device.
+ d) restart multipathd if necessary.
+ 2) Try to complete the install, setting up storage as multipath and using the
multipath device as boot disk.
+ 3) Reboot to disk.
+
+ In a success case, the install should complete successfully without
+ requiring manual configuration from the user to support the multipath
+ storage past the normal detection of multipath and partitioning.
+
+ In a failure case, the install may not complete, or rebooting may fail
+ or lead to a system booted on a single path of the multipath device (ie.
+ / on /dev/sda2 rather than /dev/mpatha2).
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The inclusion of a new multipath path selector driver should not cause any
regressions, but any failure to detect, configure or boot on multipath devices
following this change on XtremIO hardware or otherwise would constitute a
regression potentially caused by this change.
+
+ ---
+
  ---Problem Description---
dm-queue-length module is not included in installer/initramfs

On Ubuntu, multipath devices using the 'queue-length' path selector
  are non-functional on both the installer and initramfs environments;
because the 'dm-queue-length' kernel module is not included in them.

The multipath-modules.udeb (src:linux) does not include it in the installer,
nor multipath-tools-boot (src:multipath-tools) installs it in the initramfs.

One example is the EMC XtremIO storage, which has 'queue-length' defined as
its path selector in the default multipath configuration, at least on 16.04.

Other products may be affected if they are manually configured to use that
path selector (e.g., via /etc/multipath.conf), and the mere switch of that
might render the system _unbootable_ if booting from multipath, since the
  initramfs is affected.

More recently this and another storage changed default path selectors out
of 'queue-length', however, it's virtually possible for any storage system
to be affected, with the described manual configuration change. So, this
change is also desired on for the next stable release, 17.04, and later.

Patches are provided for 16.04 and 17.04.

Error logs in LP comment #6.

[Bug 1673350] Re: dm-queue-length module is not included in installer/initramfs

2017-03-16 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Triaged and assigned to me for the multipath-tools and d-i work. I've
notified the kernel team on IRC as well since I'll need to have
multipath-modules-udeb containing dm-queue-length before I can apply the
changes there. Then we can SRU the whole thing as well.

[Bug 1571416] Re: System freezes shortly after reaching the desktop (Ubuntu MATE 16.04, PowerPC)

2017-03-16 Thread Marshall
How do I add the boot options and have them stick? I tried modifying the
yaboot but I ended up breaking my install.

I can get it installed with the live radeon.agpmode=-1
then I was able to boot it by typing at the first boot Linux radeon.agpmode=-1

that's where it breaks down, I don't know how to make that change stick.
I'm used to using Linux Mint which is similar, but just different enough
that it breaks things when I try to adjust them.

[Bug 1631104] Re: The LimitNPROC line in /lib/systemd/system/openvpn@.service has to be commented out in order to be able to start OpenVPN

2017-03-16 Thread Brian Morton
Had the same error, but commenting/adjusting LimitNPROC didn't fix the
issue. Ultimately I had to make the container unconfined by AA and
privileged to get openvpn to start.

[Bug 1671799] Re: FFe: xserver 1.19.x

2017-03-16 Thread Doug McMahon
Seems ok on both
Intel+NVIDIA hybrid Haswell + NVIDIA GK107M [GeForce GT 755M]
Intel+NVIDIA hybrid Ivybridge + NVIDIA GK107M [GeForce GT 660M]

Though both show an oddity in inxi reporting when on Intel with nvidia drivers
not installed -
Ex.,
intel xserver not installed, no nvidia drivers installed, with the apparent
Ubuntu default of DRI2 only

$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card-1: Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
   Card-2: NVIDIA GK107M [GeForce GT 755M]

modesetting,nouveau
   Resolution: 1920x1080@59.91hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Haswell Mobile
   GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 17.0.1

The same is reported if intel xserver package is installed.

If nvidia drivers are installed -

intel xserver not installed, nvidia installed, DRI2
$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card-1: Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
   Card-2: NVIDIA GK107M [GeForce GT 755M]

[Bug 1673636] [NEW] Chromium-browser 56.0.2924.76 displays "Aw, snap!" for every page

[Bug 1673624] Re: fail2ban exim auth failure rule doesn't work

2017-03-16 Thread James Swift
I don't know enough about fail2ban to prepare an upgrade. My altered
line works, but it may have edge cases that cause issues for other
users. I was looking for feedback from experienced developers familiar
with this package.

[Bug 1607535] Re: ttf-mscorefonts-installer 3.4+nmu1ubuntu2 fails to install core fonts

2017-03-16 Thread Naël
I'm glad manually removing the partially-downloaded fonts fixed the
issue for you.

A bug about partially-downloaded fonts preventing the rest of the
download is currently being fixed in bug 1657567. However, the error
that is thrown out in that case (Content-Range error) is not the same as
the one you report in your comment 80 (Protocol "http" not supported or
disabled in libcurl). There would be ground for a separate bug report
regarding your issue, I think.

[Bug 1673625] [NEW] 10-globally-managed-devices.conf contained in wrong package

2017-03-16 Thread Unit 193
Public bug reported:

/usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf is
installed from network-manager but without nplan it has no benefit, and
breaks networking until you override it. Since the config is there to
change how NetworkManager behaves in the presence of nplan, the
configuration file itself should actually be contained in the nplan
