[Bug 1671606] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

2017-04-05 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Well, scratch that hope and consider me mistaken about Goth Queen's workaround.
It appears that manually setting a fixed DNS server DOES allow for successful
reconnect when the network manager is restarted (whereas before it wouldn't
reconnect period), but just like this bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1631241 name
resolution (not using the dnscrypt-proxy service, just a fixed DNS address)
fails after waking up from suspend for some frustrating, arcane reason. I have
downgraded the following packages:
(credit to Kostadin Stoilov)
sudo apt install network-manager=1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4
sudo apt install libnm-glib-vpn1=1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4
sudo apt install libnm-glib4=1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4
sudo apt install libnm0=1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4
sudo apt install libnm-util2=1.2.2-0ubuntu0.16.04.4
sudo apt install resolvconf=1.78ubuntu2

and held them in place with 'sudo apt-mark hold' for the time being, as
there appears to be a critical flaw in the updated versions of network-
manager and possibly resolv-conf and dnsmasq. I suppose we just have to
wait until something is fixed.

looks like the Pi 2 (and not the Pi 3) is the supported target hardware

[Bug 1671606] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

2017-04-05 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Oops, Goth Queen actually provided a solution earlier, it was just difficult
for me to understand at the time. Enter whatever fixed DNS server you want and
set 'Automatic (DHCP) addresses only' under IPv4 Settings in network-manager
for the default network connection. So just manually entering in your VPN's DNS
server (for PIA it's 209.222.18.222) or installing dnscrypt-proxy and choosing
127.0.0.2 as the server both work. This seems an adequate workaround for now.

[Bug 1680315] [NEW] Disable CONFIG_SECURITY_SELINUX_DISABLE

2017-04-05 Thread Kees Cook
Public bug reported:

In the v4.12 kernel, CONFIG_SECURITY_SELINUX_DISABLE (which allows
disabling selinux after boot) will conflict with read-only LSM
structures. Since Ubuntu is primarily using AppArmor for its LSM, and
SELinux is disabled by default, it makes sense to drop this feature in
favor of the protections offered by __ro_after_init markings on the LSM
structures.

[Bug 1273764] Re: Grub ignores TIMEOUT options on /etc/default/grub

2017-04-05 Thread M Griffin
I'm dual-booting Windows 10 and Kubuntu 16.10 and I had the issue with
the grub2 config file having a 10 second timeout then defaulting to 30
seconds upon boot.

I tried the workaround in post #8 which then caused my boot menu to be
completely hidden. I then removed both files described in the workaround and
removed the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT value and ran sudo update-grub which seemed to
have fixed my problem.
I have also had hibernation enabled for some time as noted in the
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT "resume=UUID=x" (swap partition) argument. I
find hibernation extremely useful with laptops (I've removed the UUID for
security reasons)

[Bug 1679252] Re: Cloud images for non-Intel architectures are configured with security repos that don't work

2017-04-05 Thread Edward Vielmetti
Is anyone testing armhf?

I ask because of this from @andrewhsu at Docker, at
https://github.com/docker/docker/issues/32335#issuecomment-292042111

> This issue is preventing the release of docker 17.04.0 for ubuntu
xenial on armhf. Ubuntu xenial on amd64 is fine, however, so packages
are available for that. When the armhf/ubuntu:xenial image is fixed, the
corresponding 17.04.0 packages will be built and released.

[Bug 1671606] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

2017-04-05 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Okay so since resolvconf and dmasq are not cooperating, I have resorted to
using dnscrypt-proxy. Credit to QkiZ, the dnscrypt-proxy service works EVERY
TIME and ignores the (completely broken) DNS resolution of dnsmasq and
resolvconf. Even with the newest version of network-manager (1.2.6) on 16.04
LTS and all its dependencies:
 network-manager
 libnm-glib-vpn1
 libnm-glib4
 libnm0
 libnm-util2
No more DNS resolution issues!
To apply this workaround (which actually also offers some security benefits
against DNS leakage), use:
sudo apt install dnscrypt-proxy
In the network manager, select "Edit Connections", select the primary (non-VPN)
network you use, click on the "IPv4 Settings" tab, change the "Method" tab to
"Automatic (DHCP) addresses only", then add 127.0.0.2 to the "DNS servers:"
box. Save your changes, then restart the connection by disabling and enabling
networking. Now go to https://www.opendns.com/welcome/ and you should see a
nice check mark.
Now, your network connection and VPN should work (meaning DNS resolution won't
break on you) every single time you wake up from suspend or use
sudo service network-manager restart
And if for some odd reason it's slow just restart the network manager
repeatedly by aliasing that to something like
alias nm-restart='sudo service network-manager restart'
in your ~/.bash_aliases file. I know, annoying but at least DNS resolution
actually works and the computer doesn't have to be literally restarted to
connect to the internet.
This isn't intended to be a fix, just a possible alternative for those of us
who experience total DNS resolution failure using a vpn on Ubuntu.

That would be great -- I should have time this weekend to upload a new
package. Debian is in release freeze at the moment and this *probably*
isn't severe enough to warrant a freeze exception, so I'm not sure how
that will affect propagation into Ubuntu, but I think Ubuntu might pull
from Debian unstable during our release freezes.

This version of aptdaemon was never in the official Ubuntu archive, and
in fact the url you've provided is a PPA.

This version of aptdaemon is still going through the phased-updates
process is only being presented to 20% of users who use update-manager
to update their packages. If you use apt-get install aptdaemon and have
-proposed enabled you'd get the new version of aptdaemon.

The version of aptdaemon you have installed,
1.1.1+bzr982-0ubuntu16.16.10.1~yakkety1.0, from some other repository is
in fact greater than the one in the official Ubuntu archive for yakkety.
You'll actually want to "downgrade" to the version of aptdaemon from the
archive.

I ran into the same issue regarding Aliyun and their custom package

a 14.04 LTS image and then ran dist-upgrade into 16.04 proper, after
switching repositories from aliyun's mirrors to regular ubuntu archives.

[Bug 1680286] Re: MAAS DNS doesn't handle non /24 subnets well

2017-04-05 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Hi Brad,

MAAS DNS support was completely refactored in MAAS 2.0, and you should
find all your issues above fully operation on MAAS 2.x.

Given that we completely refactored this in 2.0, we have no plans of
backporting any of this to 1.9.

[Bug 1680285] Re: provide better experience on vt2+

2017-04-05 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Given that you would need to include a file on the filesystem being
created anyway, it seems better to me to just write an override. This
all happens on a top-level squashfs anyway, so anything that happens in
that squashfs will not be copied over to the final system during
installation.

The actual contents of the service file matter little, what we have in
subiquity already would work just fine.

This isn't so much a bug for the subiquity deb package though... but the
subiquity snap does not ship subiquity-debug (more or less on purpose).

I think a "cleaner" way to handle this, given how systemd works, would
be to have our getty do:

ExecStart=-/bin/echo "Press enter to activate this shell"
ExecStart=-/usr/bin/agetty --wait-cr --autologin ubuntu --noclear %I $TERM

This would have the benefit of getting to a shell as 'ubuntu' rather
than root (so much closer to a real live session, what it pretty much
is); if it works. To be tested.

[Bug 1680288] [NEW] evince crashes on 'Type 3 font' error in PDF

2017-04-05 Thread Laura Derocher
Public bug reported:

I have a PDF that crashes Document Viewer repeatably at the same page.
Starting evince from console, I see these errors (at p.709, 719/958):

Syntax Error: Missing or invalid CharProcs dictionary in Type 3 font

Aborted (core dumped)

MuPDF and Firefox also flag the font error, but don't crash. Firefox
says (at p.711, 721/958)

Warning: Error during font loading: Type3 font load error: TypeError:
this.stream.getByte is not a function pdf.js:273:11

and MuPDF says (at p.712, 722/958)

error: syntaxerror: Type3 font missing CharProcs
error: cannot load type3 font (3207 0 R)
error: cannot set font
warning: Ignoring errors during rendering
warning: cannot draw text since font and size not set

I attached a bit of a PDF that triggers this. Evince will crash when it
reaches p.708 (9/16 in the extract). MuPDF and Firefox will throw errors
at p.712 but won't crash. (idk why it's not the same.)

[Bug 1623856] Re: Scrolled Windows in update-manager are too small to read

2017-04-05 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
Hmmm... back in November, I added the Proposed repository shown above in Other
Software
(https://launchpad.net/~flexiondotorg/+archive/ubuntu/sru),
and from it obtained:
aptdaemon (1.1.1+bzr982-0ubuntu16.16.10.1~yakkety1.0 )

The fix-release version in #41 above is:

aptdaemon (1.1.1+bzr982-0ubuntu16.2) yakkety;

This has not shown up in my repositories yet, and I am wondering about the
version
numbering... surely the version I have is technically a higher version than
the release
(16 being higher than 2)

In Synaptic, it shows the 16.2 version in Versions, as well as mine (and also
the assumed
original 16), but Package->Force Version, selecting 16.2 has no effect on the
version, and
"Apply" is ghosted.
Even unchecking the Other Software repository and Reloading the package list
did not change anything.
Perhaps it is because there are three other aptdaemon-related packages with the
same version
string as aptdaemon (aptdaeman-date, and two python3 pkgs.) that perhaps would
not work if aptdaemon changed its version.

Should I be uninstalling all 4 "16.16.10.1..." packages to be able to
install 16.2?

Or am I missing something?

[Bug 1680286] [NEW] MAAS DNS doesn't handle non /24 subnets well

2017-04-05 Thread Brad Marshall
Public bug reported:

We currently have a maas 1.9.5 setup on trusty that has 4 subnets
defined in it under 10.x.0.0, one /24, 2 /23s and a /21. With the
latest version of maas installed it appears that it is writing out two
zones configs for x.10.in-addr.arpa in the named.conf.maas file, which
is causing bind to error out.

After a bit of debugging, I've confirmed that it is being passed one
DNSForwardZoneConfig (for the maas zone) and 2 DNSReverseZoneConfigs
(for the x.10.in-addr.arpa zones).

Given the zones will overlap in the x.10.in-addr.arpa, it seems there
needs to be a way to handle that in the code.

Please let me know if you need any further information.

This is in seconds right? I don't want to be waiting an entire minute
for the connection to reset, if full packet loss occurs for more than 3
seconds than the connection would be broken and there'd be no point in
waiting any longer.

I will note though in this situation the ping shouldn't be any more than
50ms, I'm connecting to my local FTTH residence.

[Bug 1680285] [NEW] provide better experience on vt2+

2017-04-05 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
Public bug reported:

debian-installer and subiquity installed via debs display "Please press
Enter to activate this console." on vt2+ and pressing enter gets you a
root shell.

Currently using the snap based subiquity live image, vt2+ just display a
getty and while you can log in with ubuntu and empty password and sudo
away, the fact that you can do that is not discoverable.

Decide what experience we want, and do that in the live image.

Because of how the live image is constructed, we can and perhaps should
do what we want by manipulating the autovt@.service symlinks rather than
having drop-in files that customize how getty@.service behaves...

[Bug 1586528] Re: Avahi-daemon withdraws address record

2017-04-05 Thread Steve Chadsey
I am having the same issue, not in a VM. Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS. eth0 is a wired
network controller. I've attached a tar file containing:
- relevant syslog messages
- output of 'ethtool eht0'
- output of 'ethtool -i eth0'
- output of 'lspci -vvv'

I'm not sure what other information would be relevant but am happy to
provide it on request, either when the system is in the problem state or
otherwise.

I recover the situation by clicking the "Wired connection 1" in the
network indicator panel.

Clearly there are at least 3 problems here:
1. The network connection is lost
2. There is no reason given for the loss of connection
3. The connection is not automatically recovered

[Bug 1679622] Re: [unity8] aisleriot crashes with SIGABRT

2017-04-05 Thread Jeremy Bicha
My crash was because I was incorrectly trying to run aisleriot from a
terminal.

I was able to run aisleriot successfully by clicking its icon in the
Applications list or by running it via ubuntu-terminal-app with either of these
two ways:
ubuntu-app-launch sol
sol -- --desktop_file_hint=sol.desktop

I don't know what the original reporter's problem was. apport says that
/usr/share/applications/sol.desktop has been modified?

[Bug 1663695] Re: Kubuntu 16.04.1 discover empty after fresh install

2017-04-05 Thread Brian Murray
Hello Damien, or anyone else affected,

Accepted appstream into xenial-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/appstream/0.9.4-1ubuntu3 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

I would advise not to run with such aggressive delays. They usually
worsen the problem because as soon as there is a small % of packet loss,
your VPN redials. Longer delays (like 10 & 60) are more forgiving to
such events.

[Bug 1680279] [NEW] attach secureboot state files to shim-signed apport reports

2017-04-05 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

[SRU Justification]
I'm asking the same questions repeatedly of bug submitters about the state of
secureboot on their systems, so we should just include these files in the
apport hook. Since shim-signed changes in stable releases for policy reasons,
this should be SRUed back in as well.

[Test case]
1. Install the shim-signed package from -proposed
2. Run apport-bug shim-signed
3. Confirm that the apport collection succeeds
4. Verify that the report to be sent includes keys for two files under
/sys/firmware/efi/efivars and for /proc/sys/kernel/moksbstate_disabled

[Regression potential]
If I done messed up, we could fail to get bug reports about shim that we really
need.

[Bug 1677442] Re: openvpn client breaks on connection loss

2017-04-05 Thread Paul
Ok thanks, I ended up installing the gnome manager (with the ovpn gnome
package too) because for some reason the KDE version has most of the
settings missing, so that helped.

An odd thing to mention however though is yesterday the ovpn connection
ran all day perfectly without a single problem, yet the day before it
was constantly breaking, nothing had been changed logically and
physically so I have no idea what was going on then...

I'm going to run it with ping 1 and restart 3 for now so we'll see how
well it keeps going...

No DRM so no acceleration with Openchrome. This will make me and other

[Bug 1577926] Re: apt-key works fine, yet apt fails with "Could not execute 'apt-key'"

2017-04-05 Thread Chris Sterling
Confirmed that by changing the permissions on /tmp with the chmod solved
this issue. My permissions were incorrect before and everything works
exactly as expected now.

[Bug 1621753] Re: Google Cast no longer finds Chromecast device

2017-04-05 Thread Oisín Mac Fhearaí
Actually I just checked and the same console output is emitted when the
media router flag is disabled, only without the segfault. I could try to
get a stacktrace in gdb if you'd like.

[Bug 1621753] Re: Google Cast no longer finds Chromecast device

2017-04-05 Thread Oisín Mac Fhearaí
@Chad could you elaborate on whether the fix made it into a released
version? I just tested version 57.0.2987.98-0ubuntu0.16.04.1276,
released on 2017-03-15, and now I get the following behaviour:

With media-router flag disabled: "No Cast destinations found".

With media-router flag enabled: almost instant crash on start, with the
following console output:
