[Bug 1687333] Re: Provide a method for installing Ubuntu directly into an USB drive
I have for a while been dual booting a stable install alongside a development install even on external drives. This does not have the grub panicing if a drive is missing in bios mode with a missing drive and goes into recovery mode with even less options. Granted the choosing wrong partition can be a problem with catostrophic results. Although I am not sure this is good for others but I memorize which partition not to touch. Also hardware affecting bugs can happen in the installer but maybe not as often see bug #1675127 which has quite specific of not being connected over ethernet and have a broadcom 4322 that the installer sees and does not have drivers for in every ubuntu release I have used except the broadcom proprietary ones. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1687333 Title: Provide a method for installing Ubuntu directly into an USB drive To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1687333/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1687333] Re: Provide a method for installing Ubuntu directly into an USB drive
It is straightforward to use zsync to keep the daily iso files up to date. There are links at http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/ This way you need only download the differences between yesterday's and today's iso files. And the iso files are checked automatically by zsync. Then you can use the daily iso files to install systems into external drives. A 64-bit Ubuntu iso file makes a DVD/USB drive that boots in BIOS and UEFI mode. The installed system will boot in the mode, that was running when you installed it. There is a problem is with the bootloader. Installing the bootloader is flexible (but somewhat risky) in BIOS mode. In UEFI mode the bootloader will go to the internal drive['s EFI partition] whatever you specify unless you disconnect the internal drive. To make the computer available for safe testing, I would recommend to disconnect (unplug) the internal drive and have the production system in an external box (for example an SSD in a box with USB3 or eSATA connection).

[Bug 1651735] Re: $ mir_demo_server --help fails with an exception
Also occurs on Zesty installations that have been upgraded from Yakkety. Unity8 fails to launch (classic black screen) and unity8.log shows the error: "character conversion failed" This is due to incorrect multiple versions of boost being present on the system because they aren't removed when upgrading. Counted 6(six) different boost versions installed in Zesty because of taking the upgrade route through multiple Ubuntu versions. 'apt-get remove --auto-remove --purge' does not remove them so looks like a genuine dependency resolution problem when upgrading. [Bug 1687353] Re: System freezes due to ALSA error and recovers after significant time
** Description changed: Hello I have a Lenovo Ideapad 310. I was having issues with power management, and was using upstream kernels. I noticed they had frequent freezes, so I decided to use the standard from Ubuntu 16.04 (today, 4.4.0-75). But now it has this freezes too, so something which was bugged on the newer kernel was inserted on 4.4.0-75, as previous version (4.4.0-72) hadn't this issue. What is happening is: the system freezes. The sound that was being played loops endlessly. Everything freezes, Ctrl+Alt+Fnumber don't work. The system completely stops. Normally, I would just power the computer off keeping the power button pressed. But this time I tried to recover it, as the syslog ended always corrupted. I needed to gets the logs at least once. So I started to disconnect hardware parts: battery charger, external USB HDD (it was not being accessed), USB mouse, USB keyboard. When I disconnected the sound jack, I noticed the mouse moved, so it was recoverable. I waited for 100 seconds until the system recovered. When it recovered, looked like nothing had happened, and now I'm writing this report from the computer, without restarting. Steps to reproduce: 1) open Audacious or VLC; 2) play a music/video on Audacious or VLC; 3) open another program with sound (Steam, a browser (I use Opera), etc); 4) use the computer until a freeze happens. Observations: -Audacious + Steam + Starbound is nearly 100% chance of triggering it (SDL?). -VLC + Opera + Firefox (on start page) was enough for trigger it once, even with the only program with media opened being VLC. The freeze I was able to recover had: Opera Developer (YouTube video playing) + Audacious (playing) + Steam with audio streams opened on pavucontrol. Additionally, Thunderbird and Evince were opened, and intel-gpu-overlay was opened inside a Xnest window. The syslog says to report to alsa, so I'm writing the report here. Public bug reported: The Ubuntu Installer failed to Install the Grub/Grub2 Bootloader (it says Grub2, but this page automatically placed "Grub-installer"). The installer warned me that because this package failed to install, I will be unable to boot Ubuntu from this disk. So I must repartition the disk and try again. [Bug 1684240] Re: Mouse pointer behaves strangely
You should realize that this is not some sort of a help desk but a community where everyone is trying to help everyone by providing information about their issues. I "own" this bug because I reported it, but I am not a developer of the package involved. In my first post I mentioned that this issue might be related with Nvidia proprietary driver; it often happens when KDE is upgraded that some issues arise because Nvidia maintainers do not keep up with the advancement of KDE/plasma. The open source driver (nouveau) has a lot of issues itself and I was reluctant to try it again; I did try it though after someone wrote that they got around this issue by switching to nouveau, and it worked for me. So, if you have an Nvidia card and are using the proprietary driver, you may try nouveau instead. If not, you will do everyone a service if you run ubuntu-bug on your system and submit the information it collects. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1684240 Title: Mouse pointer behaves strangely To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plasma-workspace/+bug/1684240/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1519331] Re: Postfix cannot resolve DNS if network was unavailable when it was started, such as on a laptop
Had the same problem before Zesty and used some of the fixes described here to have postfix restart through rc.local file after waiting a few minutes. [Bug 1684240] Re: Mouse pointer behaves strangely
Finally found the bug report of this problem. It affects me, exactly the same. I could provide more details BUT it doesn't seem to be relevant, doesn't it? I explain: A couple of notes, @jgrns: What do you mean "the problem disappeared"? Does it mean: it "disappeared" from your system? Or: on everybody else's systems? It didn't "disappear" from mine. Mind to provide any useful context? Posts like that are the ones that make so many people hate 'this' (you know, Linux, FOSS, and all the things that they should not hate for things like this). Not because you are inaccurate and confusing, but because you seem to have the power to change the status of the bug (without actually fixing it), whatever "nouveau" means in your launchpad jargon. The bugs reports are not to satisfy those who have the power of changing status of bugs. They are for the users, because without users software is useless. Far too frequently I see these useless posts that seem to imply that magic does exist. Problems don't "disappear" by magic in Engineering or in Science or in Life. And if you think they do, at least you should propose some theory that doesn't make you look that you just want to dismiss the problem or make us believe that "if you wait long enough, all your problems in life will disappear" --which is true, but some us don't want to wait until we die to see all troubles vanishing from our lives. I would be fired if I would ever suggest that to my customers, or worse, tell them that because all of a sudden I ceased to see the problem, they are wrong and it doesn't exist. Sorry if it looks that I am irritated, but those six words did the job. I am sure others with this problem would also feel. Please if you can't help with this bug, or believe it's something magical that comes and go, or if open tickets are annoying, then please at least don't dismiss it with "it disappeared" without at least a slight context. It doesn't really add credibility to a --presumably-- software developer who tells users with a complaint that the problem was perhaps abducted by aliens and now "is gone". It's not. It's a bad bug, it disrupts tremendously the work in the KDE environment, to the point of almost preventing us to work with most of the programs that use the mouse at all. It is a show stopper. You can change the status of the bug to whatever you please, it's not "my" bug report system. But then it's a bit useless for the rest of the people. Anyhow, thanks for the bug report, because it is very well described. I might copy/paste part of the description and seek for help somewhere else.

[Bug 1687322] [NEW] Remaining character in /usr/bin/gdlib-config
Public bug reported: Hello, My system is "Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS" (grep DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION /etc/lsb- release). I installed libgd-dev: $ dpkg -l | grep libgd-dev > libgd-dev:amd64 2.1.1-4ubuntu0.16.04.6 I run: $ /usr/bin/gdlib-config --all > GD library 2.1.1@ > [...] You can see a '@' character located after the version "2.1.1". This is the BUG: this character should not be here. I went to: http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/libgd-dev I downloaded: libgd2_2.1.1-4ubuntu0.16.04.6.debian.tar.xz It contains the following file: patches/gdlib-config-uses-pkgconfig.patch This file contains: - echo "GD library @VERSION@" [...] + echo "GD library $($0 --version)@" As you can see, there is a remaining '@', which is a remain of "@VERSION@". This ending '@' must be deleted. A trivial patch is attached. It is untested. IMPORTANT = This BUG impacts libgd-perl whose GD-2.53/Makefile.PL contains a test on version and expects only integers (not the '@'). See debian/patches/020150323~58eceb8.patch in libgd-perl_2.53-2.1.debian.tar.xz which uses "/^2\.(\d+)\.(\d+)$/", which fails because the last fragment is not an integer (\d). [Bug 1685447] Re: SRU: resolve GTK+3.22 regressions in budgie-desktop
** Description changed: [Impact] Upstream has released v10.3 of budgie-desktop. The main aim of the release was to resolve a number of GTK+3.22 regressions together with additional functionality. Zesty is currently v10.2.9 This SRU request is to cherry-pick the key GTK+3.22 regressions from this upstream release and apply this to zesty [Test Case] With the current version: Move the panel to the bottom. Click the start menu button. Note that the start menu button jumps from the top of the screen to the bottom With the updated version: Click on the start menu button and the popup should not jump from top-to-bottom - With the current version: Click any of the panel applets. Note the speed of opening of the popup. It is instant. Compare the popup opening and animation from regular GNOME apps like Files. The popup has a smooth animation opening. - With the new version: Click of any panel applets, the popup animation should be exactly the same as any GNOME apps. + With the current version: Click any of the panel applets. Note the speed of opening of the popup. It is instant. + With the new version: Click of any panel applets, the popup animation should be exactly the same as now i.e. instant with no flickering. With the current version: clear the notifications so that he bell symbol in the panel is white. Reboot. The bell symbol will turn red due to connecting of network manager to your wifi. With the new version: repeat - network manager notifications do not cause the bell symbol to turn red. With the current version: Press ALT+F2. Note that the popup dialog is very small and does not display all the information about applications when you search. With the new version: Press ALT+F2. The popup dialog correctly displays all information about the applications found when searching [Regression Potential] For the majority of setups the bottom panel menu popups are resolved. Note - the bottom panel popups that drop quickly from top-to-bottom may not be resolved in all setups - this is a known upstream issue tracked here. https://github.com/budgie-desktop/budgie-desktop/issues/867 - There is a small chance of regression that the double popups animation - may return - this was subject to the previous update4 patch drop. The - likelihood is thought small since 10.3 has been released to both Solus - users as a main release and to Ubuntu users as part of testing - activities. No reported regressions in this area has been reported on - the upstream tracker. + Since we have redone the disable popover animation patch there is no + chance of regression that the double popups animation will return. There is no regression potential for the notification issue on first logon given that the current capability is broken. There is no regression potential for the ALT+F2 given that the current capability is broken. ** Patch added: "budgie-desktop_10.2.9-3ubuntu5.debdiff" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/budgie-desktop/+bug/1685447/+attachment/4870032/+files/budgie-desktop_10.2.9-3ubuntu5.debdiff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1685447 Title: SRU: resolve GTK+3.22 regressions in budgie-desktop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/budgie-desktop/+bug/1685447/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In brief: 1. install indicator stuff (libindicate-gtk3, libindicate5, python-indicate, python-gnomekeyring, python-notify). 2. get old packages from Ubuntu 12.04 (python-support, libindicator-messages-status-provider1, indicator-messages, indicator-messages-gtk2). 3. test with Popper (https://launchpad.net/~ralf.hersel/+archive/ubuntu/rhersel-ppa). ### for 16.04 MATE sudo apt-get install libindicate-gtk3 libindicate5 python-indicate python-gnomekeyring python-notify cd ~/Downloads wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/p/python-support/python-support_1.0.14ubuntu2_all.deb sudo dpkg -i python-support_1.0.14ubuntu2_all.deb wget http://ppa.launchpad.net/ralf.hersel/rhersel-ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/p/popper/popper_0.31.3-0ubuntu1_all.deb sudo dpkg -i popper_0.31.3-0ubuntu1_all.deb wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/i/indicator-messages/libindicator-messages-status-provider1_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb sudo dpkg -i libindicator-messages-status-provider1_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/i/indicator-messages/indicator-messages_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb sudo dpkg -i indicator-messages_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/i/indicator-messages/indicator-messages-gtk2_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb sudo dpkg -i indicator-messages-gtk2_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb Launch mate-tweak: Panel (Interface) -> Enable indicators. Go to Applications -> Internet -> Popper (or launch popper-config). Popper will work, check and indicate new e-mails as on Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS. For 16.04 do not forget to set packages pin: cat

This bug still alive within Linux version 4.10.0-19-lowlatency (booting UbuntuStudio 17.04 from USB stick). $ egrep 'drm|radeon' /media/cyril/SanDiskBlanc/dmesg170430.log [7.414065] [drm] Initialized [7.451216] [drm] VGACON disable radeon kernel modesetting. Quite annoying because AMD proprietary driver unavailable for new kernels.
