[Bug 1458204] Re: removing kernels should not require a restart afterward

2017-04-30 Thread Steve Langasek
Why does *removing* a linux-image-extra package cause
post-*installation* scripts to be run? This sounds like a bug on the
kernel side, to me.

[Bug 1687333] Re: Provide a method for installing Ubuntu directly into an USB drive

2017-04-30 Thread Brendan Perrine
I have for a while been dual booting a stable install alongside a
development install even on external drives. This does not have the grub
panicing if a drive is missing in bios mode with a missing drive and
goes into recovery mode with even less options. Granted the choosing
wrong partition can be a problem with catostrophic results. Although I
am not sure this is good for others but I memorize which partition not
to touch.

Also hardware affecting bugs can happen in the installer but maybe not
as often see bug #1675127 which has quite specific of not being
connected over ethernet and have a broadcom 4322 that the installer sees
and does not have drivers for in every ubuntu release I have used except
the broadcom proprietary ones.

[Bug 1687333] Re: Provide a method for installing Ubuntu directly into an USB drive

2017-04-30 Thread sudodus
It is straightforward to use zsync to keep the daily iso files up to
date. There are links at http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/

This way you need only download the differences between yesterday's and
today's iso files. And the iso files are checked automatically by zsync.

Then you can use the daily iso files to install systems into external
drives. A 64-bit Ubuntu iso file makes a DVD/USB drive that boots in
BIOS and UEFI mode. The installed system will boot in the mode, that was
running when you installed it.

There is a problem is with the bootloader. Installing the bootloader is
flexible (but somewhat risky) in BIOS mode. In UEFI mode the bootloader
will go to the internal drive['s EFI partition] whatever you specify
unless you disconnect the internal drive.

To make the computer available for safe testing, I would recommend to
disconnect (unplug) the internal drive and have the production system in
an external box (for example an SSD in a box with USB3 or eSATA
connection).

[Bug 1651735] Re: $ mir_demo_server --help fails with an exception

2017-04-30 Thread Rick Harris
Also occurs on Zesty installations that have been upgraded from Yakkety.

Unity8 fails to launch (classic black screen) and unity8.log shows the error:
"character conversion failed"

This is due to incorrect multiple versions of boost being present on the
system because they aren't removed when upgrading.

Counted 6(six) different boost versions installed in Zesty because of taking
the upgrade route through multiple Ubuntu versions.
'apt-get remove --auto-remove --purge' does not remove them so looks like a
genuine dependency resolution problem when upgrading.

Manually removing all the old boost versions works around the problem
and allows Unity8 to work again.

[Bug 1687352] [NEW] Graphics Corruption on Hardware Accelerated Softwares

2017-04-30 Thread Victor Barcelos Lacerda
Public bug reported:

Applications like Blender (native) and SimCity 4 (running through Wine with
Hardware Acceleration enabled) have their windows graphics corrupted as saw in
the attachment's print screen image (Blender).
Maybe this problem is OpenGL related, it's just a guess.
It didn't occur on Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak.

[Bug 1686268] Re: Backlight brightness level not restored after reboot

2017-04-30 Thread Domizio Demichelis
The exact command you wrote:

$ systemctl status systemd-backlight@intel_backlight.service

However the following one (with an added "backlight:") gives a different answer:

$ systemctl status systemd-backlight@backlight:intel_backlight.service

2017-04-30 Thread Amr Ibrahim
@Robert, yes, libgtk2-perl is in main starting only from Zesty once
gnome-software (3.22.7-0ubuntu3) recommended it on 10 April 2017.
However, it didn't get an MIR. Then it was copied to main in Trusty,
Xenial and Yakkety on 27 April 2017.

[Bug 1687334] [NEW] Grub2 failed to install. I won't be able to boot Ubuntu, so I guess I am forced to stick with Microsoft and their telemetry.

2017-04-30 Thread Levi
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu Installer failed to Install the Grub/Grub2 Bootloader (it
says Grub2, but this page automatically placed "Grub-installer"). The
installer warned me that because this package failed to install, I will
be unable to boot Ubuntu from this disk. So I must repartition the disk
and try again. If this happens again, I will continue using Windows 10 +
privacy tweaks made in the registry.

2017-04-30 Thread Jarno Suni
When removing a linux-image-extra package, kernel post-installation
scripts including /etc/kernel/postinst.d/update-notifier will be run.
That is a symbolic link to /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-

[Bug 1684010] Re: 17.04, i915 freeze on VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller

2017-04-30 Thread Traumflug
4.10.0 from mainline works fine here. Running it for two days now
without flaws.

$ uname -a
Linux piccard 4.10.0-041000-generic #201702191831 SMP Sun Feb 19 23:33:19 UTC
2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hmm. 4.10.0 from mainline works, 4.10.0(.19) from the regular repo does not.
Now I'm not sure which one to test next, because I don't know how numbers of
the regular repo are related to numbers of the mainline repo. Is 4.10-rc5 or
4.10.6 the next candidate?

[Bug 1684240] Re: Mouse pointer behaves strangely

2017-04-30 Thread Jacob Greenstein
You should realize that this is not some sort of a help desk but a
community where everyone is trying to help everyone by providing
information about their issues. I "own" this bug because I reported it,
but I am not a developer of the package involved.

In my first post I mentioned that this issue might be related with
Nvidia proprietary driver; it often happens when KDE is upgraded that
some issues arise because Nvidia maintainers do not keep up with the
advancement of KDE/plasma. The open source driver (nouveau) has a lot of
issues itself and I was reluctant to try it again; I did try it though
after someone wrote that they got around this issue by switching to
nouveau, and it worked for me. So, if you have an Nvidia card and are
using the proprietary driver, you may try nouveau instead. If not, you
will do everyone a service if you run ubuntu-bug on your system and
submit the information it collects.

I will be discussing this with Ubuntu's Security Team.

I'm attaching a screenshot of what the dialog in uptream Nautilus 3.24
looks like. It is the same as Ubuntu's except that it adds a 'Trust and

[Bug 1678271] Re: Background color erase (bce) is broken

2017-04-30 Thread Boris Gjenero
I tried installing some old libraries and binaries from Yakkety but even
with that I couldn't reproduce it in Ubuntu 17.04. I don't have any more
Yakkety systems to test on. I also can't reproduce it in 16.04.2 LTS in
Windows 10. I don't think any DOSBox changes could have changed this
either. So I'm a bit mystified here. Sorry about wasting your time.

[Bug 1687273] Re: Shared folder randomly not mounted

2017-04-30 Thread Jonathan
** Description changed:

  Hello Everybody,

since last update from ubuntu 16.04.2, last night, my servers are
randomly not able to read and write from shared folders. I got this
  message:

lsof: WARNING: can't stat() cifs file system /mnt/record
    Output information may be incomplete.
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() cifs file system /mnt/record
    Output information may be incomplete.
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() cifs file system /mnt/record
    Output information may be incomplete.

rsync error: errors selecting input/output files, dirs (code 3) at
main.c(652) [Receiver=3.1.1]

This comes from my cron script.

When I type df -h it takes sometimes very long to get the list. And it
also can be that the mounted share is disconnected and I have to mount
-a (what also takes long) again.

  My fstab have this command:

  //address /mnt/storage cifs

[Bug 1519331] Re: Postfix cannot resolve DNS if network was unavailable when it was started, such as on a laptop

2017-04-30 Thread hambling
Had the same problem before Zesty and used some of the fixes described
here to have postfix restart through rc.local file after waiting a few
minutes. The bug is still persistent for me after upgrading to Zesty.
What does fix it for me though is adding the "After" line to the Unit:
/lib/systemd/system/postfix@.service

After=network-online.target

Note: it did not work to make this change to the postfix.service unit.

[Bug 1684240] Re: Mouse pointer behaves strangely

2017-04-30 Thread iLugo
Finally found the bug report of this problem. It affects me, exactly the
same. I could provide more details BUT it doesn't seem to be relevant,
doesn't it? I explain:

A couple of notes, @jgrns:
What do you mean "the problem disappeared"? Does it mean: it "disappeared"
from your system? Or: on everybody else's systems? It didn't "disappear" from
mine. Mind to provide any useful context?

Posts like that are the ones that make so many people hate 'this' (you
know, Linux, FOSS, and all the things that they should not hate for
things like this). Not because you are inaccurate and confusing, but
because you seem to have the power to change the status of the bug
(without actually fixing it), whatever "nouveau" means in your launchpad
jargon.

The bugs reports are not to satisfy those who have the power of changing
status of bugs. They are for the users, because without users software
is useless. Far too frequently I see these useless posts that seem to
imply that magic does exist.

Problems don't "disappear" by magic in Engineering or in Science or in
Life. And if you think they do, at least you should propose some theory
that doesn't make you look that you just want to dismiss the problem or
make us believe that "if you wait long enough, all your problems in life
will disappear" --which is true, but some us don't want to wait until we
die to see all troubles vanishing from our lives. I would be fired if I
would ever suggest that to my customers, or worse, tell them that
because all of a sudden I ceased to see the problem, they are wrong and
it doesn't exist.

Sorry if it looks that I am irritated, but those six words did the job.
I am sure others with this problem would also feel. Please if you can't
help with this bug, or believe it's something magical that comes and go,
or if open tickets are annoying, then please at least don't dismiss it
with "it disappeared" without at least a slight context. It doesn't
really add credibility to a --presumably-- software developer who tells
users with a complaint that the problem was perhaps abducted by aliens
and now "is gone". It's not. It's a bad bug, it disrupts tremendously
the work in the KDE environment, to the point of almost preventing us to
work with most of the programs that use the mouse at all. It is a show
stopper.

You can change the status of the bug to whatever you please, it's not
"my" bug report system. But then it's a bit useless for the rest of the
people.

Anyhow, thanks for the bug report, because it is very well described. I
might copy/paste part of the description and seek for help somewhere
else.

[Bug 1685348] Re: Update gnome-shell-extensions to 3.24.1

   Importance: Undecided => Low

** Changed in: gnome-shell-extensions (Ubuntu Zesty)
   Status: New => In Progress

** Description changed:

  Impact
  --
This is a new bugfix release in the stable 3.24 series. It adds a new feature
to allow app launchers in the Applications menu to be dragged and dropped on to
the Desktop. (This was a GNOME 2 feature and these extensions are meant to
emulate GNOME 2).

  https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-shell-extensions/tree/NEWS
  https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-shell-extensions/log

  Test Case
  -
- 1. Install the update. Log out then log back in.
+ 1. Install the update to Ubuntu GNOME 17.04. Log out then log back in.
Open Tweak Tool. Switch to the Extensions tab and turn on the Applications
menu extension.
Switch to the Desktop tab and turn on Icons on Desktop.
Open the Applications menu. Drag an app launcher to the desktop.

  2. Launch a few apps from the Applications menu.

  3. Log out and log in to GNOME Classic to make sure that it seems to
  still work ok.

  Regression Potential

The only extension that should have changed here in the Applications menu, so
as long as that still works, this update should not introduce any problems.
-
- Other Info

[Bug 1685754] Re: gnome-terminal unduly forces umask=0022

2017-04-30 Thread Etienne URBAH
Thanks to Seth Arnold for his advices to use the 'perf' or 'auditd'
tools.

Inside the above provided '/var/log/audit/audit.log', I do NOT find the
'umask' string.

So, I prefer to begin installing and using the 'perf' tool :

$ sudo  apt-get  install  linux-tools-generic

Close the graphical session.

Record 'umask' for a Gnome session without doing anything
-

Switch to a console (tty2), and login.

  $ sudo  perf  record  -ag  -e syscalls:sys_enter_umask

Switch to the 'gdm' login screen.

Open a Gnome session, then immediately close it.

  Switch to the console (tty2).

  Press Ctrl-C.
  ... (325 samples)

  $ sudo  perf  script  > gnome-umask.log

Record 'umask' for a Gnome session with a Gnome terminal

  $ sudo  perf  record  -ag  -e syscalls:sys_enter_umask

Switch to the 'gdm' login screen.

  Open a Gnome session.

Inside the Gnome session, open a Gnome terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T.

Close the Gnome terminal with Ctrl-D.

  Close the Gnome session.

  Switch to the console (tty2).

  Press (Ctrl C).
  ... (329 samples)

  $ sudo  perf  script  > gnome-umask-with-gnome-terminal.log

Additional traces triggered by Gnome terminal
-
Following command eases the discovery of the additional traces :
$ diff  -I '[0-9]* *\[ *[0-9]* *\] *[0-9.]*'  gnome-umask.log
gnome-umask-with-gnome-terminal.log

> systemd-journal 360 [005] 10229.742513: syscalls:sys_enter_umask: mask:

>1e0e1a8 [unknown] ([unknown])

Interpretation of the additional traces triggered by Gnome terminal
---
The 'bash' trace logically comes from the 'umask 007' command in my '.bashrc'
file.

Since 0022=0x12, the suspect for 'umask 022' hardcoding is '(l-server)'.

[Bug 1235547] Re: org.gnome.Shell already exists on bus and --replace not specified

2017-04-30 Thread Richard Clay
Any updates?

New install of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Installed GNOME Shell 3.18.5
Tried to install hidetopbar following instructions on
https://github.com/mlutfy/hidetopbar
failed on last step:
~$ gnome-shell --replace
org.gnome.Shell already exists on bus and --replace not specified

Tried killing all unity related processes. 2 restart after killing:
$ ps -ax | grep unity
 4001 ?Ssl0:00 /usr/lib/unity-settings-daemon/unity-settings-daemon
 4039 ?Ssl0:00 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/unity/unity-panel-service
 4138 pts/2S+ 0:00 grep --color=auto unity

I don't have metacity since I have Gnome 3. Tried mutter --replace, but
that killed many things including keyboard input. Had to hard boot.

Still no hidetopbar, still can't gnome-shell --replace

[Bug 1687322] [NEW] Remaining character in /usr/bin/gdlib-config

2017-04-30 Thread Laurent
Public bug reported:

Hello,

My system is "Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS" (grep DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION /etc/lsb-
release).

I installed libgd-dev:
  $ dpkg -l | grep libgd-dev
  > libgd-dev:amd64 2.1.1-4ubuntu0.16.04.6

I run:
  $ /usr/bin/gdlib-config --all
  > GD library 2.1.1@
  > [...]

You can see a '@' character located after the version "2.1.1".

This is the BUG: this character should not be here.

I went to:
  http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/libgd-dev
I downloaded:
  libgd2_2.1.1-4ubuntu0.16.04.6.debian.tar.xz

It contains the following file:
  patches/gdlib-config-uses-pkgconfig.patch
This file contains:
  - echo "GD library @VERSION@"
  [...]
  + echo "GD library $($0 --version)@"

As you can see, there is a remaining '@', which is a remain of "@VERSION@".
This ending '@' must be deleted.

A trivial patch is attached. It is untested.

IMPORTANT
=
This BUG impacts libgd-perl whose GD-2.53/Makefile.PL contains a
test on version and expects only integers (not the '@'). See
debian/patches/020150323~58eceb8.patch in libgd-perl_2.53-2.1.debian.tar.xz
which uses "/^2\.(\d+)\.(\d+)$/", which fails because the last fragment
is not an integer (\d).

So, after fixing /usr/bin/gdlib-config, the package libgd-perl HAVE TO BE
regenerated (recompiled). Could you also do this please?

** Affects: libgd2 (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

Yes, I share your frustration. However, the workaround to change the
permissions of the /var/lib/dhcp directory to dhcpd:dhcpd is working for
me. We shouldn't need a workaround, but at least there is one available.

[Bug 1685447] Re: SRU: resolve GTK+3.22 regressions in budgie-desktop

2017-04-30 Thread fossfreedom
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Upstream has released v10.3 of budgie-desktop.

The main aim of the release was to resolve a number of GTK+3.22
  regressions together with additional functionality.

  Zesty is currently v10.2.9

This SRU request is to cherry-pick the key GTK+3.22 regressions from
this upstream release and apply this to zesty

  [Test Case]
With the current version: Move the panel to the bottom. Click the start menu
button. Note that the start menu button jumps from the top of the screen to
the bottom
With the updated version: Click on the start menu button and the popup should
not jump from top-to-bottom

- With the current version: Click any of the panel applets. Note the speed of
opening of the popup. It is instant. Compare the popup opening and animation
from regular GNOME apps like Files. The popup has a smooth animation opening.
- With the new version: Click of any panel applets, the popup animation should
be exactly the same as any GNOME apps.
+ With the current version: Click any of the panel applets. Note the speed of
opening of the popup. It is instant.
+ With the new version: Click of any panel applets, the popup animation should
be exactly the same as now i.e. instant with no flickering.

With the current version: clear the notifications so that he bell symbol in
the panel is white. Reboot. The bell symbol will turn red due to connecting
of network manager to your wifi.
With the new version: repeat - network manager notifications do not cause the
bell symbol to turn red.

With the current version: Press ALT+F2. Note that the popup dialog is very
small and does not display all the information about applications when you
search.
With the new version: Press ALT+F2. The popup dialog correctly displays all
information about the applications found when searching

  [Regression Potential]
For the majority of setups the bottom panel menu popups are resolved. Note -
the bottom panel popups that drop quickly from top-to-bottom may not be
resolved in all setups - this is a known upstream issue tracked here.
https://github.com/budgie-desktop/budgie-desktop/issues/867

- There is a small chance of regression that the double popups animation
- may return - this was subject to the previous update4 patch drop. The
- likelihood is thought small since 10.3 has been released to both Solus
- users as a main release and to Ubuntu users as part of testing
- activities. No reported regressions in this area has been reported on
- the upstream tracker.
+ Since we have redone the disable popover animation patch there is no
+ chance of regression that the double popups animation will return.

There is no regression potential for the notification issue on first
logon given that the current capability is broken.

There is no regression potential for the ALT+F2 given that the current
  capability is broken.

[Bug 1687273] Re: Shared folder randomly not mounted

2017-04-30 Thread Jonathan
** Description changed:

- I'm not 100% sure, that cifs-utils is the only problem, but since last
- update from ubuntu 16.04.2, last night, my servers are randomly not able
- to read and write from shared folders. I got this message:
+ Hello Everybody,
+
+ since last update from ubuntu 16.04.2, last night, my servers are
+ randomly not able to read and write from shared folders. I got this
+ message:

This comes from my cron script.

When I type df -h it takes sometimes very long to get the list. And it
also can be that the mounted share is disconnected and I have to mount

[Bug 1683516] Re: indicator-messages is not shown in mate-panel on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS MATE and 16.04 LTS MATE

2017-04-30 Thread Norbert
Working 16.04 MATE solution is below.
In brief:
1. install indicator stuff (libindicate-gtk3, libindicate5, python-indicate,
python-gnomekeyring, python-notify).
2. get old packages from Ubuntu 12.04 (python-support,
libindicator-messages-status-provider1, indicator-messages,
indicator-messages-gtk2).
3. test with Popper
(https://launchpad.net/~ralf.hersel/+archive/ubuntu/rhersel-ppa).

### for 16.04 MATE
sudo apt-get install libindicate-gtk3 libindicate5 python-indicate
python-gnomekeyring python-notify

cd ~/Downloads
wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/p/python-support/python-support_1.0.14ubuntu2_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i python-support_1.0.14ubuntu2_all.deb

wget
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ralf.hersel/rhersel-ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/p/popper/popper_0.31.3-0ubuntu1_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i popper_0.31.3-0ubuntu1_all.deb

wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/i/indicator-messages/libindicator-messages-status-provider1_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i libindicator-messages-status-provider1_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb

wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/i/indicator-messages/indicator-messages_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i indicator-messages_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb

wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/i/indicator-messages/indicator-messages-gtk2_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i indicator-messages-gtk2_0.6.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb

Launch mate-tweak: Panel (Interface) -> Enable indicators.

Go to Applications -> Internet -> Popper (or launch popper-config).
Popper will work, check and indicate new e-mails as on Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS.

For 16.04 do not forget to set packages pin:
cat
