2017-06-03 Thread Jamie Sterling
Hi Steve,

Thanks for your response.

No, I didn't format the disk; I upgraded to 17.04 with 16.10 running. I
think there is a bug with this kind of upgrade because I didn't have this
problem before. I am only using Ubuntu Mate.

Yes that should be working, but all VBE clients expect the bpp to match the
accumulated color bit mask.

I've sent a fix to SeaBIOS.

Looking at the code is seems that relocation is required as the "window" has a
maximum pagesize of 64K, but I'm not familar with those addressing modes.

In VBE2.0 there's a linear framebuffer that does not need relocations at
all and it's the only mode supported by coreboot's SeaVGABios
implementation.

Would it be possible to add VBE2 and linear framebuffer support to
gfxboot ?

You're right; after reading up the vbe specs again, 'relocation' means
mapping different regions into the window. So yes, it's required and the
code is correct.

> Would it be possible to add VBE2 and linear framebuffer support to
gfxboot?

Yes, I've done this in the branch mentioned in comment 23. The patch basically
simulates the 64k window thing by moving 64k segment selectors across the
framebuffer.

Uhm, is there a way to detect this situation? Like, add at least the color mask
bits up to 32?

[Bug 1530530]

2017-06-03 Thread Siro-3
I found another issue:
I tested KDE Neon Live DVD. It does not boot because the code checks additional
window attributes:

mov dx,[es:edi+2] ; win A/B attributes
and dx,707h
cmp dl,7
jz set_mode_50 ; win A is rw

It depends on VBE_WINDOW_ATTRIBUTE_RELOCATABLE.
The comment indicates that it needs only VBE_WINDOW_ATTRIBUTE_READABLE and
VBE_WINDOW_ATTRIBUTE_WRITEABLE.

Is the attribute VBE_WINDOW_ATTRIBUTE_RELOCATABLE required ?

It shows a splash screen and boots if I just advertise
VBE_WINDOW_ATTRIBUTE_RELOCATABLE without checking what's it's good for.

You are right.
I got confused looking at the code:
pixel_bits db 0; pixel size (8 or 16)
color_bits db 0; color bits (8, 15 or 16)

This should be fixed.

SeaVGABios advertises 24bpp as the panel does support 24bpp, even though
the VBE format should be 32bpp. I'll send a fix to SeaBIOS.

[Bug 1692437] Re: Monitors on second GPU not working after upgrade to zesty

2017-06-03 Thread Richard Eames
Some more information:

- If I switch my primary display adapter in BIOS to the onboard GPU, I can get
all three monitors and two cards working, but the framerate on the monitors
attached to the PEG GPU is so low that it's almost unusable.
- If I set the PEG GPU as primary display adapter, all three monitors work
until it gets to the lightdm greeter where only the monitor attached to the
integrated gpu works.

2017-06-03 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
This issue is fixed in 16.10 where the screen is turned on with black

dropped from 17.04 on and will be continued for updates in 16.04 only,
it doesn't make sense to pursue this issue any further.

[Bug 1695670] [NEW] IPython with --pylab=qt does not alow PyQt4 import

2017-06-03 Thread Duc Le
Public bug reported:

To reproduce, run `ipython --pylab=qt` and then do `import PyQt4`

This should work, but there was a bug in the version included in Ubuntu
16.04 (<3.0) and previously which meant this import would fail. This is
fixed in IPython 3.0 and newer (so should be fixed in Ubuntu 17.04).

The fix is here:
https://github.com/ipython/ipython/commit/5f275fe135362d5b6cca79d004f8fa272eec24d2

Would be possible to include this as a patch release for 16.04 (`ipython
2.4.1-1`)?

The equivalent bug in Red Hat was reported here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1219997

[Bug 1695666] [NEW] users shoot themselves in the foot by removing /boot/efi from /etc/fstab; u-r-u should warn and refuse to let them upgrade

2017-06-03 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

We currently have 6 open bug reports at
, and several
closed ones, from users who have by one means or another gotten
/boot/efi unmounted on their systems and then tried to apply updates.

On a UEFI system, /boot/efi must be a separate mount point (it's the EFI
System Partition); and it must be mounted at the time of upgrading the
shim-signed/grub-efi-amd64 packages, because it's meaningless to
"upgrade" these packages without installing the new bootloader to the
ESP - if you don't want to use the Ubuntu UEFI bootloader, uninstall the
package.

However, a surprising number of users (i.e., more than 0) are leaving
/boot/efi unmounted on their systems, and as a result get upgrade
failures. This is a bad thing to have happen in the middle of a dist-
upgrade between releases.

I think u-r-u should detect the case where either of the shim-signed and
grub-efi-amd64 packages are installed, and /boot/efi is not in a sane
state (is mountpoint + is mounted rw), and refuse to let the user start
the upgrade until this is resolved.

By this, do you mean that you have already formatted the disk and done a
fresh install? (which would remove any debugging information, so we would
close this bug)

The Ubuntu upgrade process does not unmount the /boot/efi mountpoint.
Previously, we have only seen this as a result of users making local changes
to their /etc/fstab. The EFI System Partition must be mounted at upgrade
time in order to upgrade the bootloader. But we would like to know why
yours was not mounted. For instance, if you were following some howto on
the Internet telling you that you should comment /boot/efi out in your
/etc/fstab, we would want to get that howto corrected, since this is bad
advice.

2017-06-03 Thread Steve Langasek
> The current host has fedora installed first so grub is

If you are running in a secureboot environment with standard Microsoft
keys in firmware, you will not be able to boot the Ubuntu kernel from
Fedora's GRUB; you need to use Ubuntu's shim and GRUB for this
(technically only Ubuntu's shim, but you need a GRUB to go with it and
it might as well be the Ubuntu GRUB). This is one reason why dual
booting on UEFI systems is typically handled in the UEFI menu itself
rather than in the GRUB menu.

If you don't want to use Ubuntu's grub, you /can/ uninstall the shim,
shim-signed, and grub-efi-amd64'*' packages, and then you don't need to
mount /boot/efi during upgrades.

In any case, it sounds like this was a local configuration error
(removing /boot/efi from /etc/fstab), so closing this bug report as
invalid. Thanks!

[Bug 1519331] Re: Postfix cannot resolve DNS if network was unavailable when it was started, such as on a laptop

2017-06-03 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

- Every now and then postfix installed on my laptop stops delivering
- mails. I detect this problem after wandering about no answers to my
- emails, or by checking the current mail queue, which should be empty
- when I am at the office.
+ [SRU Justification]
+ Race condition between resolvconf and postfix on startup leaves postfix with
a different DNS server configuration in its chroot than is used on the host
system, which may cause it to experience DNS resolution errors.
+
+ [Test case]
+ 1. Install postfix on a machine or container (not chroot) in the default
configuration.
+ 2. Run 'sudo mkdir -p /etc/systemd/system/systemd-resolved.service.d ; echo
-e '[Service]\nExecStartPre=/bin/sleep 20' | sudo tee
/etc/systemd/system/systemd-resolved.service.d/lp1519331.conf'
+ 3. Reboot
+ 4. Confirm that /etc/resolv.conf and /var/spool/postfix/etc/resolv.conf
differ.
+ 5. Install postfix from -proposed
+ 6. Reboot
+ 7. Confirm that /etc/resolv.conf and /var/spool/postfix/etc/resolv.conf match.
+ 8 Run 'sudo rm -f
/etc/systemd/system/systemd-resolved.service.d/lp1519331.conf && sudo rmdir -p
/etc/systemd/system/systemd-resolved.service.d'
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ Because we are changing the order of service initialization at boot, if there
are other packages which have undeclared dependencies on postfix (or
generically, on a running SMTP server), these services may now fail a race with
postfix startup where they succeeded before. This is highly unlikely, as a
hard dependency on an SMTP service is unusual.
+
+ Because the postfix service will now depend on network-online.target, if
+ the system fails to reach this target postfix will not start, which
+ would be a serious regression. Analysis shows that network-
+ online.target should always be reached at boot, regardless of whether
+ using ifupdown, network-manager, or networkd, and the only difference is
+ that postfix startup will be delayed a short while until the network is
+ fully configured.
+
+
+ [Original report]
+ Every now and then postfix installed on my laptop stops delivering mails. I
detect this problem after wandering about no answers to my emails, or by
checking the current mail queue, which should be empty when I am at the office.

I use postfix to deliver all sent mail to the company SMTP server. The
local postfix does not receive outside mail.

The mail queue shows errors of the type:

(Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=
type=: Host not found, try again)

When I manually check host name resolution, it works fine. It seems,
postfix either does not retry name resolution, or somehow name
resolution fails for postfix, but not other programs. Network
connectivity is fine when this problem occurs (I read my mail via IMAP
w/o local message body cache from the same server used as smart host,
use SSH to other hosts, and surf the web -- I never noticed network
problems when the postfix mail delivery did not work).

To remedy the situation I can just restart postfix and flush the mail
queue. But I need to detect the problem, and postfix should™ recover on
  its own.

I am using IPv6 privacy extensions (Ubuntu default) in a dual stack IPv4
and IPv6 network. Both local (company) and remote servers are accessible
via IPv6, thus I am actively using IPv6 for many connections. I have no
idea if this is related to the problem, but the error shows a failure to
  resolve a quad A record.

[Bug 1037285] Re: /boot fills up after many kernel upgrades

2017-06-03 Thread spike speigel
bug # 1515513 is a contributing factor. DKMS has been patched upstream
for that particular bug. Not sure when Ubuntu will update or
incorporate the patch into their packaged version of dkms.

Are there any other files left behind after kernel updates that might
cause these kinds of update problems? Are there different circumstances
in which a file may or may not be deleted?

It affects every install that uses dkms and updates kernels in the long
run.

This doesn't put any Linux distribution in a favorable light.

This bug eventually leaves the system in an insecure, unstable state.

And this has been happening since at least 2012 (that's when I first
noticed updates failing due to lack of space in /boot). As others have
stated, it is impossible to resolve manually for those who are not
technical and just want to use the desktop. My father has actually had
this happen on the Ubuntu install I set up for him.

I agree. I think it should be handled as a security issue with a higher
priority.

[Bug 1669620] Re: Reboot when resume from suspend

Apologises, I think I'm conflating a resume from hibernate issue vs a
resume from suspend issue, so the previous comment is probably not that
relevant.

[Bug 1669620] Re: Reboot when resume from suspend

2017-06-03 Thread Jean-Pierre van Riel
No sure if this will help, but there are plenty of debian bugs related
to this to check

If you are relying on the `resume=` kernel parameter with
/etc/default/grub, that might well be ignored. According to the message
below, there are various bugs in upstream debian (and I'm not sure if
Ubuntu patches/changes this):

https://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2017/04/msg00348.html

After installed, I noted `/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume` uses a
UUID, but I had issues getting resume to work, possibly because I
recreated my swap partition. As far as I could tell, Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
seems to ignore the `resume=` kernel parameter as a UUID or LABEL.

`apt-cache show initramfs-tools` shows Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS currently has
`Version: 0.122ubuntu8.8`, so it should be free of the bug/regression
that caused UUID or LABEL to be ignored in `conf.d/resume`

[Bug 1695650] [NEW] gnome-clocks help incorrectly says that alarms will still work if app is closed

2017-06-03 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Install gnome-clocks
Click the app menu in the top left of the screen.
Click Help
In Help, click Add an alarm.

The second sentence at says the alarm "will go off regardless of whether
Clocks is open or not."

But this sadly is not true currently since gnome-clocks does not keep
running in the background.

[Bug 1597245] Re: [SRU] update check-all-the-things to xenial

2017-06-03 Thread LocutusOfBorg
@Seth, is it ok to have for xenial a version higher than the yakkety one?
I have provided the "safest" and "smallest" debdiff possible, because of the
security issue.

That said, I have no problems in uploading even the artful one, the
package is used only by Ubuntu and Debian devs, and it has just some new
checks and nothing more.

I also tested the artful version, and works correctly.

I have just upgraded to a fresh install of 16.04 and I see this bug. The
bug has been reported one year ago when 16.04 was available. When is it
going to be in the distro?

[Bug 1173915] Re: initctl continuously takes 100% of CPU

2017-06-03 Thread Donjan Rodic
Realised that this was happening on a few 16.04 LTS machines I manage.
It's one thing for me to kill the daemon periodically myself... and
completely another to have annoyed users for months without being
handled.

For now we settle with crontab -e
*/5 * * * * killall initctl

Killing initctl every 5 minutes looks really scary and it's hard to
believe that this is the currently best solution.

[Bug 1533480] Re: banshee stops respondiing during media import

2017-06-03 Thread Misur Braford
I also had this problem running banshee 2.6.2 on Kubuntu 17.04, as I
wanted to clean out my system (fresh install of Kubuntu). Disabling
plugins, importing single files at a time, or any other solution
mentioned here did not solve the problem. How I imported my cleaned-out
library was by doing the following:

1) Preferences -> Source Specific: set Music Folder to my actual music folder
(which is on another partition)
2) Preferences -> Extensions: disable Library Watcher and enable it again. It
started scanning the library and crashed banshee after a couple of seconds.
3) Close banshee and re-open it. Now it showed a couple of albums (those which
it was able to scan before crashing, I assume)
4) Tools -> rescan Music Library

Now it cleanly scanned all files in my library!

I had 'Copy files to media folder when importing' and 'Update file and folder
names' disabled.
Library Watcher and BPM Detection are the only extensions I have enabled.

Note: I am not at all capable of finding out how or why it crashed, or
why this worked.

[Bug 1686347] Re: golang-1.8-go binaries missing in PATH

2017-06-03 Thread Tong Sun
Again, the philosophy of needing to install golang-go to get a go on
$PATH is wrong.

Think of different MTAs a Linux system can have and co-exist -- Never
ever there is a need of a meta MTA package for any particular MTA
program to act like MTA (i.e., being in PATH and being used by the
system). Go program is much simpler than dealing with MTAs, thus it
shouldn't be more complicated than installing a particular MTA program
to use.

[Bug 1686347] Re: golang-1.8-go binaries are installed into lib

2017-06-03 Thread Tong Sun
I meant, it is *OK to put into lib*, because of coinstallable of
different go packages.

However, it is not OK to not to have go in PATH at all. Debian has a way
to choose alternatives, and *that step is missing* from the
golang-1.8-go package.

** Summary changed:

- golang-1.8-go binaries are installed into lib
+ golang-1.8-go binaries missing in PATH

[Bug 1686347] Re: golang-1.8-go binaries are installed into lib

2017-06-03 Thread Tong Sun
@Michael, so how Ubuntu/Debian handle coinstallable different go
packages?

I have to agree with Kai because I presume that more than 99% of people
would only install one version of go. Thus, penalizing 99% of people
because of the other 1% is not a very friendly way of doing things.

For those <1% of people that do need multiple instances of Go, they sure
know how to add Go to their path, and they would definitely need to do
so. Thus, they need to do the mandatory step *anyway*.

So, it make perfect sense to have golang-1.8-go to put all its
executables into bin.
