[Bug 1701297] Re: NTP reload failure (causing deployment failures with MAAS)

2017-06-29 Thread Tyler Hicks
AppArmor has difficulties mediating filesystem access when overlayfs is
involved. That's a known issue but isn't one that is easily solved due
to the internal design of overlayfs and its use of private vfsmounts. It
also isn't something that we're planning to fix for the 17.10 cycle.

I thought that we recently investigated a similar issue to this and
determined that MAAS wouldn't enable AppArmor when it is initially
provisioning a machine. I can't remember the exact details and I'm not
confident that was the final solution but maybe that rings some bells
for the others that were involved.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1685754] Re: gnome-terminal unduly forces umask=0022

2017-06-29 Thread Seth Arnold
Oh, one more possible confusion -- when a process's parent dies, it is
reparented to pid 1. This guarantees that _some_ process will wait(2) on
every dead child. So seeing 'ppid 1' in a process listing simply means
the process's parent died before you looked for it.

[Bug 1685754] Re: gnome-terminal unduly forces umask=0022

2017-06-29 Thread Seth Arnold
I believe even Gnome on 16.04 LTS is using the upstart user session
rather than system user session. This could be part of why the Gnome bug
discussion seemed to go around in circles.

Other possible sources of confusion:

- ~/.profile and ~/.bashrc are strictly for shells. Nothing else reads
them. This might work if you start X via the startx(1) tool after
logging in to the console, like the old days.

- Setting umask via GECOS field requires pam_umask(8) to be in the PAM
stack for the service in question. It may or may not be. Check
/etc/pam.d/ files to be sure.

Thanks

Rhythmbox does not correctly interpret the ID3 tags of this mp3 file,
but I have several other files with Chinese ID3 tags which are correctly

[Bug 1654448] Re: XPS 13 9360 and 9350, Realtek ALC3246, Headphone audio hiss

2017-06-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I haven't yet tested the latest test kernels but disagree with comment
#85.

As mentioned in comment #77:
"Although I can't help but think that we could still fix this by limiting the
volume more (or finding some gain setting that is on but shouldn't be). Having
headphone volume that doesn't go high enough is already a common problem plenty
of people would be used to. But the important thing is they won't report that
as a bug, so maybe that's better."

I think we might need more people testing the potential fix to gauge
whether or not a lower max volume is really worse than the hiss.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security

[Bug 1701423] [NEW] APST quirk needed for Samsung 256GB NVMe drive

2017-06-29 Thread Josh Lilly
Public bug reported:

This bug is a follow on from a previously fixed bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1678184

The nature of this bug is identical to the previously reported bug, however it
also affects 256GB drives as well.
The wording at the start is a bit confusing, as it states that the 256GB drive
already has a quirk added. Following the trail back a little, however, shows
that a fix for high power drain was introduced, which then caused the NVMe
controller lockups and system hangs.

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 with HWE kernel [4.8.x, yakkety] on a Dell XPS15 9550
with a Samsung 256GB NVMe SSD.
This bug commenced with the kernel linux (4.8.0-47.50) yakkety, with the
specific change found at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1664602

Tied that last link to the Debian bug, linked above. That includes a
patch, or since apticron seems to have fixed this in 1.1.59, 1.1.61
(which is in artful) could be backported.

[Bug 1694596] Re: LiteOn NVMe issue

2017-06-29 Thread John Neffenger
Dell asked me to apply the following firmware upgrade, which fixed some
problems on Windows:

LITEONIT Solid State Drive Firmware
http://www.dell.com/support/home/ca/en/cabsdt1/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=CWX68

The update program, though, works only on Windows. I'm waiting to find
out from Dell whether there's a way to apply the update without
installing Windows over my current Ubuntu installation. For example, I
thought I might use a WinPE bootable flash drive to apply the update:

WinPE: Create USB Bootable drive

[Bug 1701068] Re: motd.ubuntu.com currently shows media item (HBO's Silicon Valley using Ubuntu)

2017-06-29 Thread Timothy R. Chavez
@Dustin

Are we looking at the same USER_AGENT string? I ran the block of code
from `update-motd.d/50-motd-news` on my laptop that constructs the
USER_AGENT variable that's sent to motd.ubuntu.com and it looks like
this: "curl/7.47.0-1ubuntu2.2 Ubuntu/16.04.2/LTS
GNU/Linux/4.7.0-040700-generic/x86_64
Intel(R)/Core(TM)/i7-7500U/CPU/@/2.70GHz uptime/1499911.84/3827524.62"
not what's described at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_agent and not
what you pasted above. Reading the comments in the code, it's clear that
it's being used to craft the response, but what's not clear is if
Canonical is collecting the server information... If they are, I think
it's fair to make that apparent. That's all.

Re: Fun Facts
Fun facts are indeed fun, but this feature should be reserved for important
information regarding EOL, Security Patches, etc.
If the administrator of ${system} wants a fun fact, they can install something
else. Cow Say, Fortune, whatever to display that.

Not trying to stir anything up, it's a great feature but that feature should be
used wisely so people do not disable it.

[Bug 1624715] Re: rpc.statd not started automatically

2017-06-29 Thread Mark Wagner
The second line got wrapped on the "-". "statd.service" should be part
of it.

[Bug 1624715] Re: rpc.statd not started automatically

2017-06-29 Thread Mark Wagner
The systemd unit erroneously thinks that only NFS servers need
rpc.statd. Try this fix:

sudo cp /lib/systemd/system/rpc-statd.service /etc/systemd/system/
echo "WantedBy=nfs-client.target" | sudo tee -a
/etc/systemd/system/rpc-statd.service
sudo systemctl reenable rpc-statd.service
sudo systemctl restart rpc-statd.service

This only needs to be done once.

Hi Joseph,
Any updates on this? Let me know if you had a chance to generate another
kernel after a new bisect.
