[Bug 1724911] Re: text VTs are unavailable on desktop after upgrade to Ubuntu 17.10

2017-10-21 Thread Steve Langasek
edc2988c548db05e33b921fed15821010bc74895 is bad, though the symptoms are
different. (no output on the external monitor from plymouth; plymouth
itself seems to crash and the VT is in text mode, so text input results
in characters being shown in the upper lefthand corner over the plymouth
background; since plymouth isn't accepting input, I'm not able to boot
all the way to userspace and check whether the text VTs are accessible
after X or wayland has started, since with plymouth broken the root disk
does not unlock.)

2017-10-21 Thread Shah Moeen ud Din
Public bug reported:

I am using Libreoffice version 5.4.2.2 and Ubuntu Mate 16.04. I
installed Libreoffice via official fresh ppa.

After last update Icons were missing from toolbar:
https://i.stack.imgur.com/0LljV.png

So I went to Tools>Options>LibreOffice>View so I can change icon style.
but whenever I click View libreoffice freeze.

Then I install libreoffice-gtk3 package and now when I click
Tools>Options>LibreOffice>View I got following error.

[Bug 1720217] Re: Allow building images with kernels without initrd

2017-10-21 Thread Steve Langasek
As part of verifying this SRU I had to change the test case to point to
current lp:~ubuntu-core-dev/livecd-rootfs/livecd-rootfs-xenial, not
because of any bug in the live-build SRU, but because the previously
referenced branch would not reliably trigger the original bug against
xenial (due to undefined ordering of initramfs-tools configuration).

These livecd-rootfs branches also had already added a versioned
dependency on the xenial-proposed version of live-build, so the test
case cannot be completed as written. Modifying the livecd-rootfs
package to drop this versioned dependency is required; otherwise livecd-
rootfs is unpacked but not configured, which prevents other packages to
be successfully installed as part of the build by livecd-rootfs itself
using apt.

Once livecd-rootfs is correctly installed with the relaxed dependency,
the original failure is reproducible as expected; and upgrading to the
xenial-proposed version of live-build resolves it.

[Bug 1714459] Re: Shell font is blurry under Wayland (panels, menus and login screen too)

2017-10-21 Thread PJSingh5000
@Didier Roche, I am quite appreciative that you noticed this and opened
this bug!

QUESTION ABOUT THE FIX: Will subpixel order (=rgb) and hinting (=slight)
be hard coded into Wayland, or will the user be able to override these
(perhaps through a glib schema file)?

[Bug 1725615] Re: Unmet dependencies on nginx-extras under Ubuntu artful

2017-10-21 Thread Alexander Mashin
`apt-cache policy nginx-extras` now that I removed PPA repository reports:

[Bug 1716784] Re: Ephemeral boot error: alloc magic is broken at 0x94eceac0: 94e05880

2017-10-21 Thread David Britton
I found out a trick:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/760228/booting-under-maas-direction-
error-file-not-found

This led me to think there was an error with the kernel selected for the
ephemeral boot, so, I went into settings, 16.04 was selected, but the
kernel was 'no minimum kernel'. I changed that to 16.04-hwe. I then
was able to enlist. After that, I switched it back to 'no minimum
kernel', and it still enlists fine.

I suspect some kind of migration is amiss, and it was trying to tell the
node to use a kernel that was no longer there, or not referenced in the
right way.

Anyway, appears working now with that workaround.

Re: [Bug 1725861] Re: APT::AutoRemove::SuggestsImportant "false" should be the default

That is absolutely not apt's responsibility to handle, when the admin has
never indicated to the package manager that they want to keep B; and is
nothing when weighed against the asymmetry that causes package cruft to be
kept around on every user's systems after upgrade.

A user who discovers after autoremovals that she wants B installed can
install B from the archive. But a user who just wants no-longer-needed
packages to be autoremoved has no reasonable way to get this - because
that's what 'autoremove' is supposed to imply already, but it doesn't
actually deliver unless you track down this non-obvious apt setting and
tweak your config.

If 'apt install A=1; apt install A=2; apt autoremove --purge' gives
different results than 'apt install A=2; apt autoremove --purge', then that
is a bug. Sometimes it's a bug in a package. In this case, it's a bug in
the package manager.

The current behavior is not a sensible default.

[Bug 1716784] Re: Ephemeral boot error: alloc magic is broken at 0x94eceac0: 94e05880

2017-10-21 Thread David Britton
I'm still getting this. I tried updating the NUC firmware where this
repeats, no joy.

Maas version: MAAS version: 2.2.2 (6099-g8751f91-0ubuntu1~16.04.1). My
images are all "synced" as of today.

Anything else I can try?

[Bug 1720217] Re: Allow building images with kernels without initrd

2017-10-21 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

  [SRU Justification]
initramfsless boot is an important enhancement to decrease boot times and
increase density for cloud images. Unfortunately, live-build assumes that an
initramfs is used, and image builds fail if it is not present. Fix this so
that these improvements can be applied to the LTS, which represents the vast
majority of cloud instances.

  [Test case]
- 1. Build livecd-rootfs from
lp:~rbalint/livecd-rootfs/minimize-unminimize-xenial
+ 1. Build livecd-rootfs from lp:~ubuntu-core-dev/livecd-rootfs/xenial-proposed
  2. Install this version of livecd-rootfs with the xenial-updates live-build.
  3. Create a build directory with 'mkdir build-dir; cd build-dir'
  4. Attempt an image build with the command (as root): 'cp -a
/usr/share/livecd-rootfs/live-build/{auto,ubuntu-cpc}/ .; env
PROJECT=ubuntu-cpc SUBPROJECT=minimized ARCH=amd64 SUITE=xenial lb config &&
env PROJECT=ubuntu-cpc SUBPROJECT=minimized ARCH=amd64 lb build'
  4. Confirm that this fails to produce output, with the error 'cp: cannot stat
'chroot/boot/initrd.img-*': No such file or directory'
  5. Clean up the build tree with 'rm -r --one-file-system .build/ *'
  6. Install live-build from xenial-proposed.
  7. Attempt a second image build with the same command from step 4.
  8. Confirm that this produces output files in the current directory.

  [Regression potential]
If another bug is introduced elsewhere that causes an initramfs to fail to be
generated in the expected location as part of an image that does require one,
the resulting image build will fail or will fail to boot due to the ignored
error.

  [Original description]
Lb may fail when creating an image with a kernel not requiring, hence
initramfs-tools not building initrd.

[Bug 1718931] Re: No VPN autoconnect

2017-10-21 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Literally just toggling that one option "Store password for all users"
in the VPN settings fixes the problem entirely. Use "sudo service
network-manager restart" and it connects flawlessly the first time. To
avoid the error loop on bootup specifically, just uncheck the box "Make
available to other users" on the primary connection.

[Bug 1725888] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.10 has no clipboard manager

2017-10-21 Thread dennyg...@gmail.com
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 17.10 has no functioning clipboard manager. This means that if
you copy something from an application, and then close that application
before pasting it elsewhere, it's lost.

For now I was able to fix this issue by installing parcellite.

Also, there should be a better way to add a bug report to launchpad than
fudging it like i had to, but I brought this up as a bug before, to no
joy.

[Bug 1720465] Re: HiDPI scaling does not hold across reboot

2017-10-21 Thread John Wang
Yes, same problem using the final 17.10 release ISO freshly installed as
a guest OS under Parallels Desktop 13 on a MacBook Pro host. The default
session it logs me into uses X.org instead of Wayland for some reason.
My host machine's native resolution is 2880x1800 (but it's detected by
Artful as 3360x2100, although that's also the same resolution my old
Zesty VM Unity session mis-detected it as).

[Bug 1718931] Re: No VPN autoconnect

2017-10-21 Thread Nicholas Stommel
Yeah, I keep getting the "vpn-connection[...]: Failed to request VPN
secrets #3: No agents were available for this request." error message in
my syslog. I found, however, that THIS worked for me: All you have to do
is go Dash->VPN->VPN
Settings->connection_name_here->Identity->Password->"Store for all
users" and bingo problem solved. If nm-connection-editor says that you
can't save the connection (the save box is grayed out), then...just
forget the network and set up the connection again (worked for me at
least). Once you have checked said auto-connect box with nm-connection-
editor and ensured that the VPN password is set to "Store for all
users," both the primary connection AND the VPN will start successfully
at the same time. See my post at https://askubuntu.com/questions/967408

[Bug 1714804] Re: Aardvark Daily: Indicator-Multiload doesn't show full-width

2017-10-21 Thread Dane Powell
Thanks, I wasn't aware of the GNOME Shell System Monitor, and I agree it
largely obviates the need for indicator-multiload on GNOME.

For other folks who haven't used it before, install with `sudo apt-get
install gnome-shell-extension-system-monitor`, then enable using GNOME
Tweak Tool (this worked for me anyway).
