[Bug 1725861] Re: APT::AutoRemove::SuggestsImportant "false" should be the default
While that sounds reasonable at first in simple situations, if I follow that argument, I can find no reason why we are doing complex metapackage handling, keeping many providers and a lot of other things, so we should get right of all those, too, should we? In reality we have to deal with many many users who only very casually check the output of apt and generally trust it to do the right thing™. And that is kinda reasonable if we don't want to teach every user packaging practices. Most users will just not make the connection between having run autoremove a couple of days ago and suddenly not being able to push audio files from their favorite player directly to their phones causing users (and supporters alike) to be frustrated. Having "too many" packages installed rarely causes that level of frustration in comparison. autoremove is just not an "undo". It is supposed to remove things which are clearly no longer needed by anything. Like old kernels, old libraries and co. In fact, ideally we should end up in a situation in which autoremove can be called automatically so that old kernels are really gone, the system is cleaner after an upgrades and such… (but for various reasons that isn't really possible/advisable at the moment). Perhaps we should implement an "undo" – just named differently as that is too confusing as we can't really perform an undo, but we have the history.log from which we can extract which packages were newly installed in an "apt install A" and offer to remove them as well (maybe with a question ala: those other packages make use of B initially installed with A, should we keep it?). (And, while we are at it also a way for a repository to say: I don't support package A anymore with options among a) you can safely remove it as something else takes care of it now, b) here are potential alternatives [we tend to have a list in RM requests, but nothing a user can look at easily] c) it is dead and nothing compares d) look elsewhere for it e) … – which should deal with a lot of packages which autoremove should be removing, but is too scared ATM as it has not enough information to make a safe call) [No, I haven't implemented either. I haven't even really thought about them. It just sounds for me like those could be potential ways to resolve the situation] -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1725861 Title: APT::AutoRemove::SuggestsImportant "false" should be the default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/1725861/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1725861] Re: APT::AutoRemove::SuggestsImportant "false" should be the default
Users have in the past "accidentally" removed entire desktops ("I installed this package, now my desktop is gone and I can't use my PC anymore"). They often just hit enter and don't really read what apt is going to do. aptitude does autoremoval by default in any install/remove/upgrade/etc operation SuggestsImportant was set to true in 2011 with 0.8.15.3. It's been that way for 6 years, 3 LTS releases. I feel like it's a bit late to change that back now. Also, just setting SuggestsImportant to false will not really help - you might still get a different result in your example. Any dependency on a virtual package or an or group will keep _every_ installed package satisfying that dependency installed. So install A depending on B | C | D, install packages needing C and D, remove the latter packages and C and D will still be kept around. So my personal autoremoval script (which based on pseudo boolean optimization to mathematically ensure the smallest possible system based on manually installed + depends + recommends) would currently remove 42 packages, autoremove only 24. In my opinion, for careful people like us, I do agree that the Suggests handling is bad (after all, my script also does not treat Suggests as important). But I don't fully trust normal users with that, given what we've seen in the past with some not reading what apt is going to do and then complain afterwards that their entire desktop was gone. A reasonable compromise here would be to easily give the user the information that they can remove even more packages: * Keep autoremove SuggestsImportant * Add a new option to autoremove and co like --autoremove-more that sets SuggestsImportant to false * When running autoremove, show "The following packages could also be removed, but might enhance other installed packages. Use --autoremove-more to remove them" and a list of packages that are only kept by Suggests (and preferably list which package(s) are suggesting them). Now the enhances might be confusing in the wording, but we eventually want to also have the autoremover respect Enhances, but Enhances is more complicated since it's the other way around. But it does explain the situation. Finally, I'd like to hear what DonKult has to say, given that he turned that on in the first place. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1725861 Title: APT::AutoRemove::SuggestsImportant "false" should be the default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/1725861/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1724639] Re: Graphics problem - 80% of the Left hand side of screen solid black
@kaihengfeng; I have tried both kernels you proposed, and can confirm what has been stated in the opensuse-Forum: Both Kernels 4.11 and 4.12 SEEM to be working and show no graphic glitches. So the first idea would be that something happend within the Kernel transition from 4.12 to 4.13, , but not too easy. Trying to open differnet Applications with 4.12 shows that there is already something fishy going on with the graphics, e.g. LibreOffice will not start with Kernel 4.12 and I believe it must have to do with the graphics. This is in accordance with the errors / logs / exceptions posted in the opensuse bug-report. So for Computers / Laptops / Netbooks using the Intel Mobile 945 Chipsets and Ubuntu 17.10, I would personally recommend the 4.11 Kernel, for I found it to be most stable and all applications I have tested so far do work. I can help with logs and dmesg if needed, please just tell me what logs you need. For everyone who has this error, I will show you a workaround so you can still use your computer even after the update to 17.10. The workaround consists of installing kernel 4.11 and using it. Enter Grub (which is the startup manager) by holding down the shift key while booting. If you have Grub showing up on every boot (e.g. if you have a multi OS and also have Win 7/8/10) installed, even better. Now select Ubuntu ... enhanced options and then select starting up with the 4.10 Kernel (which still should be installed if you have updated from 17.04). If the option to start up with the 4.10 kernel is not available, select recovery mode (which should also work fine, but you have to work with a low resolution then) In the 4.10 Ubuntu (recovery mode) open your browser and go to this directory: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.11/ under "Build for i386 succeeded" download these 3 files: linux-headers-4.11.0-041100_4.11.0-041100.201705041534_all.deb linux-headers-4.11.0-041100-generic_4.11.0-041100.201705041534_i386.deb linux-image-4.11.0-041100-generic_4.11.0-041100.201705041534_i386.deb After the download, put those 3 Files in a new, seperate folder, and open the directory with the terminal (right click on the folder --> open in Terminal). In the Terminal post: sudo dpkg -i *.deb Press enter and wait. The 4.11 Kernel will be installed, it takes a while. After that, you can reboot your computer and in Grub in the enhanced options you can now start your computer with the 4.11 generic kernel, which works fine for me. If you want Ubuntu to start up everytime with the 4.11 Kernel, you can use the "Grub Customzier" for that. Here is how you install the grub customizer: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/04/install-grub-customizer- ubuntu-1404/ Let's hope that someone in this Linux world can make the Intel Mobile Graphics card work again in a de-bugged 4.13 kernel =) Cheers and Kudos everyone ! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1724639 Title: Graphics problem - 80% of the Left hand side of screen solid black To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1724639/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1725958] [NEW] Eclipse not working in Ubuntu 17.10: No more handles
Public bug reported: I have tried both Eclipse 3.8.1-10 (Neon) from the Ubuntu distribution and the latest Eclipse Oxygen. Both end up hanging (becoming none responsive) while the splash screen is still showing. Broken things - 1. The splash screen appears in the top left corner instead of the center of the screen. 2. After a few seconds the splash screen changes to a zoomed in version of the top left of the full splash screen. 3. (With Neon) A bunch of GTK warnings are emitted. Many are similar to the following: (Eclipse:23921): Gtk-WARNING **: Negative content width -6 (allocation 1, extents 4x3) while allocating gadget (node toolbar, owner GtkToolbar) And there are a couple of others not related to negative content sizes. 4. Finally the message "Gdk-Message: Unable to load hand2 from the cursor theme" is emitted after which clicking the splash screen or its icon in the dock results in an "application is not responsive" dialog. 5. [Bug 1725955] [NEW] "Printer added" notification
Public bug reported: I've recently installed Ubuntu 17.10 (Gnome shell). After a while a saw an OSD notification with the message "printer added", and thought that must be because of the new driverless printers feature in the kernel. I have a brother printer in the network, and I tested it and it worked. The thing is that the message repeats itself, approximately every two minutes, and it's really distracting. I saw a question about this on AskUbuntu (https://askubuntu.com/questions/918462/ubuntu-17-04-printer- added-notifications-under-gnome), and a solution, but it seemed like no one had filed a bug report. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "printer_added.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1725955/+attachment/4984537/+files/printer_added.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1725955 Title: "Printer added" notification To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1725955/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 1725676] Re: Keyboard language
Yes, It was version upgrade (17.04 - 17.10). But I didn't see any option for switching keyboard lang. On Saturday, October 21, 2017, 11:50:46 PM GMT+4, Gunnar Hjalmarsson <1725...@bugs.launchpad.net> wrote: Was it a version upgrade (from 17.04 to 17.10) or a fresh install? In any case, and if I understand it correctly, the GDM greeter, which is the default greeter in Ubuntu 17.10, allows you to use the keyboard layout(s) stated in the /etc/default/keyboard file. That file probably includes this line: XKBLAYOUT="az" while you would like that line to read: XKBLAYOUT="us" or maybe XKBLAYOUT="az,us" If you - as in the latter case - state more than one layout, the GDM greeter will provide a keyboard layout switcher. So I guess you need to fix this somehow, maybe by starting your computer with a bootable USB stick. -- You received this bug notification because you are subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1725676 Title: Keyboard language Status in ubuntu-docs package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: New Ubuntu version 17.10 downloaded and can't change keyboard languag. My password in English so I can't logged in Because keyboard is in Azerbaijani which is the letter 'w' is missing. [Bug 1724639] Re: Graphics problem - 80% of the Left hand side of screen solid black
I can confirm the bug too. After the Xubuntu update from 17.04 to 17.10, the intel mobile graphics is broken. Moreover, the issue seems to be a little bigger. The bug here is the same one as bug #1720703 , so Mods please merge the two bugs. (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mate/+bug/1720703) It seems to have nothing to do with the Ubuntu distro, as is is present in Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu, Lubuntu und Xubuntu, all Versions 17.10 -- > so this indicates that it is Kernel 4.13 related. And it seems to affect other distros as well. The bug also affects OpenSuse, with Kernel 4.13: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1058870 So there seems to be something wrong with Kernel 4.13 with the Intel Graphics 945. In the openSUSE Bug Report, users state that Kernels 4.11 and 4.12 are still working. I will test that right now and report back. [Bug 1725911] Re: input/out bug
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Reviewing your log files attached to this bug report it seems that there is a problem with your installation media (CD/DVD). You can verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you downloaded by following the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM. You might also retry your installation with new media. In the event that is is not in fact an error with your installation media please set the bug's status back to New. Thanks and good luck! [Bug 1725680] Re: DNS name resolution doesn't work on Artful
Yes, my wifi provides a DNS nameserver. It's adress is 192.168.44.1, and it is shown when I open System Settings --> WLAN and click on the properties of the connected network. When I manually add this DNS server to resolv.conf, DNS resolution will start working. What I'm currently using is some sort of a "public facility wifi", where anyone can connect freely to without any authentification (and without encryption). Unfortunately, this is the only network I can test ATM, so I don't know if if would be different on e.g. a WPA2-encrypted private wifi. Here is the output of the two commands: $ systemd-resolve --status Global DNSSEC NTA: 10.in-addr.arpa 16.172.in-addr.arpa 168.192.in-addr.arpa 17.172.in-addr.arpa 18.172.in-addr.arpa 19.172.in-addr.arpa 20.172.in-addr.arpa 21.172.in-addr.arpa 22.172.in-addr.arpa 23.172.in-addr.arpa 24.172.in-addr.arpa 25.172.in-addr.arpa 26.172.in-addr.arpa 27.172.in-addr.arpa 28.172.in-addr.arpa 29.172.in-addr.arpa 30.172.in-addr.arpa 31.172.in-addr.arpa corp d.f.ip6.arpa home internal intranet lan local private test Link 3 (wlp7s0) Current Scopes: DNS LLMNR/IPv4 LLMNR/IPv6 LLMNR setting: yes MulticastDNS setting: no DNSSEC setting: no DNSSEC supported: no DNS Servers: 192.168.44.1 DNS Domain: lan Link 2 (enp9s0) Current Scopes: none LLMNR setting: yes MulticastDNS setting: no DNSSEC setting: no DNSSEC supported: no -- $ sudo NetworkManager --print-config # NetworkManager configuration: /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf (lib: 10-dns-resolved.conf, 20-connectivity-ubuntu.conf) (run: 10-globally-managed-devices.conf) (etc: default-wifi-powersave-on.conf) [main] # rc-manager=symlink # auth-polkit=true # dhcp=dhclient dns=systemd-resolved plugins=ifupdown, keyfile [connectivity] uri=http://connectivity-check.ubuntu.com/ [ifupdown] managed=false [logging] # backend=journal # audit=true [device] wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no [connection] wifi.powersave=3 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1725680 Title: DNS name resolution doesn't work on Artful To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1725680/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1722269] Re: No graphical boot with 4.4.0-96 and NVIDIA GeForce 840M
apport information ** Description changed: My computer (using XUbuntu 16.04) boots and works normally with kernel 4.4.0-92 but upgrading to 4.4.0-96 prevents lightdm from starting. In fact, the GPU detection service fails. The problem also appears with proposed 4.4.0-97. I tested with mainline kernel 4.13. It boots to lightdm but it is difficult to exactly tell what happens as some modules for my hardware were not found/compiled/installed (as a result, I cannot connect to wifi with this kernel).
