[Bug 1295229] Re: With 'hosts: mdns4' in nsswitch.conf, getaddrinfo() returns -5 (EAI_NODATA) when network interface is down

2017-11-24 Thread TJ
The 17.10 install was default, with:

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns

The user gave up and re-installed with 16.04 so we don't have access any
more to diagnostic output.

However, the issue here was that the lookup should have been satisfied
by 'files' since the system hostname was in /etc/hosts, both for IPv4
and IPv6.

Regardless of that, what nacc and myself found perplexing is the
[NOTFOUND=return] - if mdns fails to resolve the name surely NSS should
'continue' and try to resolve using DNS, not return?

[Bug 1734418] [NEW] nsupdate: Queries for TKEY are sent to wrong server when using GSSAPI

2017-11-24 Thread lpsputnik
Public bug reported:

When not using the zone master in /etc/resolv.conf, nsupdate sends TKEY
to the ns in resolv.conf instead of the zone master.

For more details refer to the already fixed redhat version (fixed by upstream):
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1236087

This causes dns updates to fail.

Please include the bugfix in the ubuntu packages.

[Bug 357456]

2017-11-24 Thread Ztirfe Elgnid
I've been looking at a proper solution for this.

We already have the MSIServer service already implemented—it just
doesn't do anything yet. I think the best way to fix this is to register
the IWineMsiRemote* classes in the server process with
REGCLS_MULTIPLEUSE, so not much change in infrastructure at all. I see
two ways of doing this: either move all of the COM objects into
msiexec.exe, or add an internal function in msi.dll. I like the first
one for the sake of separation, but it does mean we need an internal
idl.

Any thoughts on this from anyone else?

Have we identified any reliable and easy workarounds to get the USB live

[Bug 1417470] Re: PDF+Latex export creates multipage pdf, pages missing

2017-11-24 Thread Eduard Braun
As the previous fix only worked around the issue by adding blank pages to the
output I had another shot at fixing this. I created a merge request with a
"proper" fix that actually outputs partial renderings of the final document
which can then be stacked in the LaTeX document with the text sandwiched in
between, see
https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/merge_requests/135

As the renderer (especially the hack we use to make PDF+LaTeX work) is a
fragile thing and I'm not too familiar with it yet this requires a lot
of testing. I'd appreciate if you could check with your own samples if
Inkscape produces proper output.

Attached is an example document that should highlight the new
functionality.

[Bug 1734410] [NEW] systemd: handle undelegated cgroup2 hierarchy

2017-11-24 Thread Christian Brauner
Public bug reported:

Hey everyone,

Current systemd versions all fail when the unified cgroup hierarchy is
not-writable. This is especially problematic in containers where the
systemd administrator might decide to not delegate the unified hierarchy
or when running with a liblxc driver that doesn't yet know how to handle
the unified cgroup hierarchy. I've pushed patches to systemd upstream
that let systemd ingnore the non-delegated unified hierarchy. The
relevant commits are:

e07aefbd675b651f8d45b5fb458f2747b04d6e04
2d56b80a1855836abf1d7458394c345ad9d55382
1ff654e28b7b8e7d0a0be33522a84069ac6b07c0

These patches will be in 235 but should be backported from xenial
upwards.

Christian

[Bug 1734409] [NEW] systemd-sysctl: exit gracefully on EPERM/EACCESS

2017-11-24 Thread Christian Brauner
Public bug reported:

Hi everyone,

systemd-sysctl in systemd versions prior to 232 will exit with FAILED
when not being able to apply kernel variables. In containers it should
simply move on and exit with SUCCESS. Upstream systemd carries
appropriate patches for this already. The relevant commits are:

411e869f497c7c7bd0688f1e3500f9043bc56e48
39540de8abe24886693ca29a9caeea85c88089aa

these should be backported to xenial's systemd.

[Bug 1731796] Re: NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 23s! [gdbus:2878]

2017-11-24 Thread Arlie Stephens
Happened again. Auto-bug reporting didn't recognize this report as
similar, so created bug 1734405

Note - compiz was in Z state (per top), consuming 100% of a cpu (per
top) throughout the incident. I was able to login via ssh and look at
things.

I don't believe that a stuck compiz process could be caused by soft
lockups. So the compiz process *may* be closer to the root cause?

[Bug 1734405] [NEW] package samba 2:4.3.11+dfsg-0ubuntu0.16.04.11 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2017-11-24 Thread Arlie Stephens
Public bug reported:

Same scenario as Bug #1731796; probably same root cause.

Observed the lockup a bit more closely this time.

It began with compiz in Z state (according to top), consuming 100% of a
cpu. In this situation, it was possible to ssh to the system.

I was running software updater, and could see various activity by aptd,
dpkg, and htppd - the latter running as -apt or some similar named
system account.

Unfortunately, "software updater" is not a parent for this activity, so
I couldn't be sure that it had exited (and it might eventually have
blocked on compiz), but I waited until the apt/dpkg activity stopped
before power cycling.

This time the system came back much more sane - no need to run "dpkg
--reconfigure -a" from ssh.

NOTE - as well as the soft lockups (which I didn't verify this time), we
have the zombie process.

[Bug 1734392] Re: Password textbox loses focus in prior to textbox in locked profile

2017-11-24 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1734392/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[Bug 1734395] [NEW] mkfs.ext4dev unrecognised file system

2017-11-24 Thread Paul Graydon
Public bug reported:

This is probably a bit of a daft one, and it's not blocking me on
anything, but I see this more as a UX bug.

mkfs.ext4dev creates a file system that mount then can't mount, unless
it is told explicitly that it is ext4.

(on a side note, what is ext4dev? Can't seem to find a solid answer)

$ sudo mkfs.ext4dev /dev/sdb
mke2fs 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
/dev/sdb contains a ext4 file system

$ sudo mount /dev/sdb mount
mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4dev'

$ sudo mount -t ext4 mount
$
/dev/sdb on /home/ubuntu/mount type ext4 (rw,relatime,data=ordered)

doing a normal mkfs.ext4 works perfectly fine, as you'd expect.

[Bug 1734392] [NEW] Password textbox loses focus in prior to textbox in locked profile

2017-11-24 Thread xxx
Public bug reported:

After locking computer via ctrl+l sometimes (actually happened twice to
me) textbox on login screen loses focus. And (wow!) entered password
appears in the window that was focused in the locked profile. Example: I
locked screen when chrome had focus, entered password then appeared in
addressbar. It's not easy to move focus back to password textbox, but I
did it once somehow.

[Bug 1734388] Re: LibreOffice Snap version is not recognizing the word accent keys.

2017-11-24 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Can you please elaborate on what you mean by accent keys?

I'm using a French keyboard layout where "é" and "è" are primary keys,
and they are input correctly in libreoffice. I also tested a Spanish
layout with a dead key for the acute accent, and I was able to input
letters such as "é" by combining the dead key and "e".

I'm not familiar with Portuguese layouts, please explain how you input
accentuated characters and how it's not working. Thanks!

[Bug 1725788] Re: Fail to resume after suspend on Ubuntu 17.10 with Radeon RX 480

2017-11-24 Thread Veron Rado
Got the latest Ubuntu kernel update 4.13.0.17.18 (it hung during kernel
installation and had real pain figuring out how to get out of that
mess[1])

Trying to figure out how Ubuntu's kernel numbering matches regular Linux kernel
numbering it would appears (from the README[2]) that Ubuntu 4.13.0.17.18 brings
us up to Linux 4.13.8 ?
So its not fixed yet.

Hi Esteban,

thanks for the bug report. I just pushed a fix to debian VCS, so it will
be part of the next upload to Debian and then get synced to the next
Ubuntu release.

Cheers,
  Stefan.

[Bug 1686107] Re: Latest kernel update gets stuck

2017-11-24 Thread Veron Rado
@ Giorgio Salluzzo Thanks for the workaround. It got me out of a real
mess.

I am on Ubuntu 17.10 but the same issue happened to me
For any one else in a panic, stuck in the same situation, kernel half
installed, this is what saved me:

* Kill Synaptic with "System Monitor"

* A dpkg process was left hung and was blocking further updates
- So in "System Monitor" search for and kill the dpkg process that's
running and locking things.
- Searching the string "/var/lib/dpkg" found it for me.
- It had this process "linux-headers-4.3.0-17-generic.postinst"

* Here's the trick that made it work (@ Giorgio Salluzzo's workaround)
Go to a virtual console CTRL+ALT+F6
Login as your user name and run this command from there
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

* That alone is probably the fix but I also ran these from the same virtual
terminal
$ sudo apt-get install -f
$ sudo apt-get clean
$ sudo apt-get update

* CTRL+ALT+F2 to get back to the desktop.

* Then "Software Updater" popped up a message saying run a "Partial Upgrade".
Which I did. But it turned out I didn't need that so it stopped itself
automatically!

* Then I opened Synaptic and checked for updates. None.

* Back-up any user data and reboot. For me all went well.
  The new kernel was installed.

NOTES: I tried "sudo dpkg --configure -a" in a normal Terminal but it failed.
It just hung again like Synaptic did.
Giorgio Salluzzo's virtual console workaround was the trick.

But the virtual consoles can be weird.
CTRL+ALT+F1 locks my screen (and then the monitor switches off!) When you wake
the screen you can't log back in!!! You have to use CTRL+ALT+F2 to get back to
the desktop.

CTRL+ALT+F6 seemed to work best for me but when I tried it for the first
time it was just a black screen with a cursor. When I came back later it
had a promt for me to login with.

[Bug 1734382] [NEW] Folder contents not shown when opened from image file

2017-11-24 Thread hife
Public bug reported:

Gthumb version: 3:3.4.3-1
OS: Ubuntu 16.04

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open an image file with gthumb from the file browser.
2. Click the button with the left arrow in the top left corner to "return to
folder".

Result:

Often, the folder is shown as "(empty)" in the browser panel. The folder
tree is expanded to show the folder in question, but the folder is not
highlighted in the tree. The correct folder name is displayed in the
dropdown menu above the browser panel.

Reselecting the folder in the dropdown menu does not change anything.

Clicking on the folder in the tree, loads the contents of the folder.

[Bug 1507983] Re: Timeout until screen blanks setting does nothing

2017-11-24 Thread Simon Steinbeiß
@dnord: This has nothing to do with xscreensaver, so not sure in how far
that comment is helpful.

Regarding the actual bugreport: the screensaver-timeout setting only takes
effect when the greeter is used as a lockscreen. So at login the setting is not
honoured at all, instead the system default values are taken.
This is also why the behaviour of the greeter will differ between logging out
and locking your session with respect to the screensaver.

So I would not categorize this as a bug, because the code is
specifically written to work this way. Instead I would consider this a
feature request.

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - Lenovo Y50-70

2017-11-24 Thread britgreek
The problem also affects Lenovo G40-30. I have just installed Ubuntu
17.10 in legacy mode (dual boot with Windows 10) and the boot from USB
option is gone. Very serious issue, as there is no way to format our
hard drives and reinstall an OS. There was no reference in the
documentation for such a serious problem that would alter/corrupt our
bios.
