[Bug 1740729] Re: No Network Install Instructions for Lubuntu Bionic Alt are completely out of order

2017-12-31 Thread jokinglove
** Description changed:

  Hello, I am following the instructions for the "No Network in Lubuntu
  Alternate amd64 in Bionic Daily".

  See here:

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/384/builds/163656/testcases/1689/results

  Unfortunately, when even starting at step 1, there is no "Try Lubuntu"
  button

  Step 3-12 is out of order, it first loads first to select language then
  keyboard type (step 13).

  Steps 13-14 are before 3-12. It asks to setup account information before
  the partitioning options.

  Step 15 is non-existent.

  I think these instructions are mixed up for the Bionic Desktop
  instructions and not the alternative one?

None of the above worked here! Without the /etc/resolv.conf nothing
works obviously, then the dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf does nothing (i.e.
there is still no file after running it. Adding it manually solved a
part of the problem, but the Unknown group "power" still blocks starting

2017-12-31 Thread Doug McMahon
audacious doesn't appear to use gvfs-backends so to test removed the backends
package & replaced current libcdio packages with these 3, then it (audacious)
works fine
libcdio16_0.94-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
libcdio-cdda2_10.2+0.94+2-2_amd64.deb
libcdio-paranoia2_10.2+0.94+2-2_amd64.deb

So issue seems to be with libcdio17

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-31 Thread Juan Felipe
** Description changed:

  Description: An update to linux kernel on Ubuntu 17.10 that enabled the
  intel-spi-* drivers made Insyde BIOS unusable. Main issues were Settings
  being not stored, USB Boot impossible and EFI entries read-only.

  Fix: The issue was fixed in Kernel Version 4.13.0-21. But previous
  affected machines still suffered from a broken BIOS.

  Repair: Boot Linux and Install Kernel Version 4.14.9. Reboot into Linux
  and BIOS should be restored to a working state.

  ---

  Test Case: Fix has been verified by our HWE team on affected hardware.

  Regression Potential: Minimal, it's unlikely anyone is actually doing
  anything which requires this driver.

  ---

  Original Description:

  Basically on Lenovo Y50-70 after installing Ubuntu 17.10, many users
  reported a corrupted BIOS.

  It's not possible to save new settings in BIOS anymore and after
  rebooting, the system starts with the old settings.

  Moreover (and most important) USB booting is not possible anymore since
  USB is not recognized. It's very serious, since our machines do not have
  a CDROM.

  Lenovo forums at the moment are full of topics regading this issue.

  Thank you!!

[Bug 1740713] [NEW] gthumb asks for confirmation before deleting an empty directory

2017-12-31 Thread DBooth
Public bug reported:

When attempting to delete an empty directory, gthumb pointlessly pops up a
confirmation dialog asking "Are you sure you want to permanently delete [the
folder]? If you delete a file, it will be permanently lost." In addition to
wasting the user's time, this is also dangerous, because it conditions the user
to always confirm such dialogs: it causes users to fail to notice REAL warnings
when they happen. It is similar to a false alarm. In healthcare, this
phenomenon is known as "alarm fatigue", and is well documented as being
dangerous:
https://psnet.ahrq.gov/webmm/case/362/harm-from-alarm-fatigue

If the directory is already empty when the user tries to delete it, then
gthumb should not issue a confirmation dialog.

Tested on gthumb version 3.4.3

[Bug 1728238] Re: update-initramfs not adding i915 GuC firmware, firmware fails to load

2017-12-31 Thread spike speigel
Thanks Paul, that workaround helped me. The 9.14 GuC loads now. I
tried downloading the new 9.39 GuC on intel's site, and changing the
version in the hook script, but the 9.39 firmware would not load for
some reason. Maybe due to both firmware versions existing in
/lib/firmware/i915/ on my system and the older one being seen/used
first. I might try again later and moving the older firmware, but am
content with it loading as it is now.

[Bug 1740712] [NEW] Bionic Alternate Test-Case does not have Guided- resize partitioning option

2017-12-31 Thread jokinglove
Public bug reported:

Hello, I am following the "Alternate Install (Guided) in Lubuntu
Alternate amd64 in Bionic Daily" steps.

See:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/384/builds/163656/testcases/1438

On step 12 it states: "Select Guided - resize 'drive details' and use
freed space and press Enter"

However I see no such option "Guided- resize", I only see:

- Guided- use entire disk
- Guided- use entire disk and set up LVM
- Guided - use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM Manual
- Manual

Maybe the guide means to enter "Manual" first before?

I am running on a windows 10 64bit with the lubuntu bionic amd64 running
inside a VM using VirtualBox.

If you are able to boot from cd and install Ubuntu 16.04, which requires
making changes to settings in the firmware if you are running in UEFI

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-31 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Amidst all the noise here, I thought it might be good to summarize some
things and perhaps get them confirmed.

Affected distros:
 * Ubuntu
 * Antergos

and if the kernel bug attached is the same as this one:
 * Arch
 * Fedora

Note: every distro with the right kernel has the potential for the
problem, even though they do not display the symptoms. They may have
turned it off, but the problem lies waiting in the kernel, not unlike
some recessive genetic disease.

The kernels:
 * 4.10 is ok
   * highest version is in zesty-proposed: 4.10.0-43.47
 * 4.11-4.13.0-17 is not ok
   * highest version is in artful main: 4.13.0-22.25
 * 4.13.0-21.24 avoids creating the problem by refusing to compile the kernel
with CONFIG_SPI_INTEL_SPI_PLATFORM set
   * highest version is in artful-proposed: 4.13.0-22.25
   * bionic main is still 4.13.0-17.20!
 * 4.14.9 Ubuntu mainline fixes the problem, it seems
   * this includes the following relevant commits:
 * don't touch SPI-NOR write protection bit
d9018976cdb6eefc62a7ba79a405f6c9661b08a7 (see kernel bug report)
   * this is for the LPC bridge of the Intel I/O Controller hub
(southbridge) which provides access to, e.g. BIOS ROM
   * note this only seems to affect Intel Haswell and Broadwell, see
drivers/mfd/lpc_ich.c for PCI IDs
 * off-by-one fix 9d63f17661e25fd28714dac94bdebc4ff5b75f09
   * this DOES NOT include the kernel compilation config change found in
4.13.0-21.24
   * for some reason this doesn't work for everyone, so perhaps there's another
issue at play

Affected serial flash devices by manufacturer part number, JEDEC ID
(SPI_NOR_HAS_LOCK set in drivers/mtd/spi-nor/spi-nor.c)
/* ESMT */
   f25l32pa, 0x8c2016
   f25l32qa, 0x8c4116
   f25l64qa, 0x8c4117
/* GigaDevice */
   gd25q16, 0xc84015
   gd25q32, 0xc84016
   gd25lq32, 0xc86016
   gd25q64, 0xc84017
   gd25lq64c, 0xc86017
   gd25q128, 0xc84018
   gd25q256, 0xc84019
/* Winbond */
   w25q16dw, 0xef6015
   w25q32dw, 0xef6016
   w25q64dw, 0xef6017
   w25q128fw, 0xef6018

Note: considering the author of intel-spi the device driver feels that
these are the problem children, based on a characteristic they have, the
fact that there's Insyde BIOS or not probably has no bearing on whether
or not a device is affected.

Finally, a question: any way to figure out the JEDEC ID of the serial
flash without having to load the module?

[Bug 1740700] [NEW] rhythmbox keeps playing music after closing

2017-12-31 Thread Simon P.
Public bug reported:

I am on 17.10 now but I also experienced the following behaviour all
recent Ubuntu versions.

What I expect to happen: After closing Rhythmbox by pressing "x" in the menu
bar, the program should really close and music should stop playing.

What actually happens: Rhythmbox keeps running in the background. To
finally stop the music I have to press pause in the Gnome shell addon
(17.10) or press the audio button in the top panel and pause the music
there (17.04 and prior versions).

I know that this a "feature" rather than a real bug. However, this behaviour
very counterintuitive - all other programs (included in Ubuntu by default)
close on "x". Plus it does not even have any benefit on usability- we have that
neat dock to park programs that run in the background.

Therefore I see no reason that Rhythmbox should in this regard behave
different and I would call it a bug in user experience. I think it
should be changed, at least in future Ubuntu versions.

[Bug 1672297] Re: gnome-shell uses lots of memory, and grows over time

2017-12-31 Thread jesus225
No matter what you do, gnome-shell eats up RAM slowly. In case you
shutdown your machine after every use, you will not notice it, however,
if you keep it running or tend to suspend/hibernate, it will reach a
point when it will swap.

After one day of usage (just web browsing) gnome-shell increased ram
usage from 100M to 350M. It does not free it up even if you close all
windows. In my 4GB machine, it means that either I restart every day or
I start facing swap issues the second day.

[Bug 1740687] [NEW] Dokuwiki 20160626.a is incompatible with php7.1

2017-12-31 Thread DeathByDenim
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 17.10. Currently that comes with PHP7.1.
However, DokuWiki only became compatible with PHP7.1 since version 2017-02-19e
“Frusterick Manners”. Currently Ubuntu 17.10 only ships with Release
2016-06-26a “Elenor of Tsort”.

Using the old version results in DokuWiki producing PHP Fatal Errors in
the CSS.php part. Thus all pages are malformed.

[Bug 1721428] Re: Artful (17.10) Session logout after screen turned off

2017-12-31 Thread Luís Pedro Carvalho
According to last -x command my session terminates only when turning the
screen back on.

I also confirm that the session is not only logged out but every process
created and all files in /run/shm/ are also killed.

It seemed like installing caffeine (disabling auto suspend and screensaver) had
solved it, but after turning the screen on in the morning the session crashed
at that moment.
In /var/crash there are files timestamped just after I turned the screen back
on of: caffeine, Xwayland and gnome-shell.

This was a fresh install of 17.10 on desktop with AMD cpu and AMD gfx
card connected to HDMI monitor. Everything was updated before the latest
crash occurred again.

[Bug 1740680] [NEW] input/output error while installing using usb

2017-12-31 Thread Amit Goel
Public bug reported:

I tried installing Ubuntu's latest stable version as on Dec 31st 2017, with
Long Term Support.
However, the installation has failed and I get Error no.5 Input/Output Error.
The error message also says that the USB drive may be corrupted or something to
this effect. I think the drive is perfectly fine, maybe the iso file did not
mount correctly onto the drive.
What can I do to get out of this loop.

[Bug 1740608] Re: USN-3459-1: partially applies to MariaDB too

2017-12-31 Thread Otto Kekäläinen
The 5.5 series update for 14.04 is now available.

Please use git-buildpackage to fetch and build from the ubuntu-14.04
branch at http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-
mysql/mariadb-5.5.git/log/?h=ubuntu-14.04

The repository uses pristine-tar, so there is no need to separately
download the sources. You can just check the signature/SHA1SUM directly
from the git-buildpackage generated tarball.

Test builds and testsuite passed on all platforms at
https://launchpad.net/~mysql-
ubuntu/+archive/ubuntu/mariadb/+builds?build_text=_state=all

As a reminder, debdiffs can be browsed directly from the repo like this:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-mysql/mariadb-5.5.git/diff/debian/?id=ubuntu/5.5.58-1ubuntu0.14.04.1=ubuntu/5.5.58-1ubuntu0.14.04.1

Or in a local clone with 'git diff .. debian/'

Security sponsor note these:

[Bug 1711337] Re: Firefox crashes at start on armv7L after 55.0.1 update

2017-12-31 Thread herrtimson
Not fixed for trusty, it still fails with the same error over and over
again.

I do understand that this free software, and that the ubuntu devs are
unpayed volunteers basically. However, this is one is a big bummer for
so many people out there, so can you please throw some ressources at it
to solve this eventually?

It is possible to solve it, see the arch linux binary.

[Bug 1177381] Re: Duplicity can't find its own tempdir

I guess I have a related error.
Initially I used deja-dup for the backup on ubuntu 17.10, but it fails silently
since weeks.
So I manually launched duplicity to find what is the error and it is quite
cryptic :

--allow-source-mismatch   scp://
