Public bug reported: SRU Justification Impact: The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or a minimally backported form of that patch. The 4.13.16 upstream stable patch set is now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu kernel as well. git://git.kernel.org/ TEST CASE: TBD The following patches from the 4.13.16 stable release shall be applied: ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: kernel-stable-tracking-bug ** Tags added: kernel-stable-tracking-bug -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1744213 Title: Artful update to 4.13.16 stable release To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1744213/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1729836] Re: update-initramfs generating unbootable initrd files when using stderred LD_PRELOAD hook
I think I figured out the cause. Basically PEBCAK.. There's a program called stderred (https://github.com/sickill/stderred) which colorizes stderr to differentiate it from stdout, via a LD_PRELOAD hook. I have had this set for years in my ~/.bashrc: root@jturner-home:~# echo $LD_PRELOAD /home/jturner/src/github/stderred/build/libstderred.so When I examine the initrd file as follows, I see half the binaries in bin/ contain ANSI escape codes, and the libstderred.so library has been pulled in: root@jturner-home:/boot# update-initramfs -u -k 4.13.0-25-generic update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.13.0-25-generic root@jturner-home:/boot# mkdir bad root@jturner-home:/boot# ( cd bad; zcat ../initrd.img-4.13.0-25-generic | cpio -idmv; ) root@jturner-home:/boot# ls bad/home/jturner/src/github/stderred/build/libstderred.so bad/home/jturner/src/github/stderred/build/libstderred.so root@jturner-home:/boot# ls -1 bad/bin ?[0m ?[0m?[1m?[31m[[?[0m?[1m?[31m ?[0m?[1m?[31macpid?[0m?[1m?[31m ?[0m?[1m?[31mash?[0m?[1m?[31m ?[0m?[1m?[31mawk?[0m?[1m?[31m ?[0m?[1m?[31mbasename?[0m?[1m?[31m ?[0m?[1m?[31mblockdev?[0m?[1m?[31m ?[0m?[1m?[31mcat?[0m?[1m?[31m ... ?[1m?[31m[?[0m?[1m?[31m busybox cat chroot cpio dash date dd ... The output of update-initramfs goes red halfway. Perhaps update-initramfs could sanitize its environment, or explicitly unset LD_PRELOAD. [Bug 1740323] Re: Enigmail should be updated to version 1.9.9 following Cure53 audit
I asked in the original bug report to have Enigmail updated to 1.9.9. Posteo, one of the sponsors of the audit, wrote at https://posteo.de/en/blog/security-warning-for-thunderbird-users-and- enigmail-users-vulnerabilities-threaten-confidentiality-of-communication : "For Enigmail users: * Update Enigmail immediately to the new version 1.9.9. This update removes all vulnerabilities identified in this audit. * ..." An excerpt of the audit report is available at https://www.enigmail.net/download/other/Enigmail%20Pentest%20Report%20by%20Cure53%20-%20Excerpt.pdf linked from the Enigmail changelog at https://www.enigmail.net/index.php/en/download/changelog . At your link https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates it says: "2. When 2.1. High-impact bugs Stable release updates will, in general, only be issued in order to fix high-impact bugs. Examples of such bugs include: * Bugs which may, under realistic circumstances, directly cause a security vulnerability. These are done by the security team and are documented at SecurityTeam/UpdateProcedures. * ..." That's the situation here, there are multiple bugs that cause security vulnerabilities and I submitted a bug report here asking for Enigmail to be updated. If that means this is a "stable release update" and not a "fake-sync", that's fine with me. I'm not part of the Enigmail development team. It seems from your link that this should be handled by the security team, but if you or the security team are not the right group to handle this according to Ubuntu bug rules, please feel free to reassign this to a different team, or leave it unassigned and remove the "Incomplete" status. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1740323 Title: Enigmail should be updated to version 1.9.9 following Cure53 audit To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/enigmail/+bug/1740323/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1740323] Re: Enigmail should be updated to version 1.9.9 following Cure53 audit
Hi Jeremy, unfortunately we cannot just fake-sync enigmail from Debian to address this issue; the candidates for fake-syncing are the entries with 'sync' in the 'Status' column on http://people.canonical.com /~ubuntu-security/d2u/ The quickest and easiest way to get enigmail updated is to prepare a debdiff with cherry-picked patches that address security issues applied in the Debian packaging, and documented in the debian/changelog. [Bug 1744169] Re: KVM + Virtio kernel panic
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode. To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1744169/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package. [Bug 1742602] Re: Blank screen when starting X after upgrading from 4.10 to 4.13.0-26
I built the next test kernel, up to the following commit: b9c55b6e2cc4369b0688961fa5de0e057f3ec0c4 The test kernel can be downloaded from: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1742602 Can you test that kernel and report back if it has the bug or not? I will build the next test kernel based on your test results.
