[Bug 1737428] Re: VRF support to solve routing problems associated with multi-homing

2018-01-29 Thread Dmitrii Shcherbakov
John,

Interfaces of a host carry enough information to be used to make routing
decisions - that's the core idea of host and router-side VRF
implementations. Network spaces as of now do not help you to solve
routing problems in any way unless you have one big L2 network and
"routing" is done without routers: via ARP/NDP in a single broadcast
domain.

Static routes are not flexible enough and are a workaround for the lack
of VRF support. They require many additional steps from a deployer's
perspective to worry about: one should just take a set of VLANs and
subnets to configure in MAAS and assign them to a network space. With a
default gateway per subnet there is always a next hop to delegate a
routing decision to for a given network space from a host's perspective.
Charms and potentially applications do need to be VRF-aware (discussed
above on how).

BGP on a host, while feasible in some scenarios, is not always doable in
practice: not every network and/or security department will give you an
ability to deploy something and set up peering with their BGP-enabled
routers.

I'd be happy to discuss scenarios in-depth here or out of band but the
idea is that Network Spaces need to learn how to assist with Routing and
Forwarding parts - currently they solve only end-end discovery via
relation data.

[Bug 1746174] [NEW] Error in CPU frequency reporting when nominal and min pstates are same (cpufreq)

2018-01-29 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

== Comment: #0 - Shilpasri G. Bhat
+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #163527 +++

---Problem Description---
Error in CPU frequency reporting when nominal and min pstates are same

The patch for this issue is accepted to linux-next as

3fa4680b860bf48b437d6a2c039789c4abe202ae
cpufreq: powernv: Dont assume distinct pstate values for nominal and pmin

Some OpenPOWER boxes can have same pstate values for nominal and
pmin pstates. In these boxes the current code will not initialize
'powernv_pstate_info.min' variable and result in erroneous CPU
frequency reporting. This patch fixes this problem.

[Bug 405294] Re: A2DP Bluetooth audio skips terribly ["Skipping NNN us (= MMM bytes) in audio stream"]

2018-01-29 Thread PeterPall
Since the history of Bug 1746164 isn't visible here I'm adding the short
form here, too:

By default BT audio works fine on Ubuntu - if there is no WiFi active:
Both work on the same frequency range, 2 WiFi channel is about 20
Bluetooth Channels wide and every time a WiFi package is sent bluetooth
risks a packet loss.

We should ship things in a way that they work out-of-the-box => I am all
for providing this file with Ubuntu, possibly with Bluez.

In the case of my laptop btcoex_enable=1 would already do the trick.

Technical background:
 - https://wiki.freebsd.org/dev/ath_hal(4)/AntennaDiversity

Until the kernel default is updated Creating a file named
/etc/modprobe.d/bluetooth-audio.conf with the following content:

options ath9k btcoex_enable=1 bt_ant_diversity=1

should do the trick.

[Bug 1728012] Re: Many 3rd party scanner drivers are broken by a sane change

2018-01-29 Thread PeterPall
Seems like the 1st try for my patch is lost including its description =>

I've tried to create a patch that automatically applies all workarounds on
installing libsane1. The only thing I am not sure is the symlinks:
 - If we try to link the new directories to the old ones on a system update
(when the old dir still exists) the link cannot be created. Hence the patch
only creates them on a clean install.
 - and I have no idea if we can avoid creating the links on IA32 systems, too -
where they don't do harm, but don't help, neither.

Perhaps we should compile a list of all individual files Epson, Brother
and perhaps others provide and create a separate symlink for every file.
Any ideas? And any volunteers for this?

[Bug 1741617] Re: Mouse integration not working

2018-01-29 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Yes I was after the video part, but as I assumed we both have the same default.
Hmm, I'm soon out of ideas :-/ (maybe trying with the different video devices,
no not really)

OTOH the next thing I wanted to check were input devices - and there is a
difference that might be related.

I have this in addition to your setup (added by virt-manager by default):

In virt manager that appears as:
Virtual Input Devive
Type: EvTouch USB Graphics Tablet
Mode: Absolute Movement

Should be something like: virtual machine details > Add Hardware > Input
> EvTouch USB Graphics Tablet to get one.

I remember that this absolute positioning tablet device was a
requirement for the seamless integration - I think it is worth a try to
add that on your side.

As usual - now that I know what I look for - I found [1] which pretty
much points to the same direction.

I currently run the newest vanilla kernel using an Acer Aspire S7 with
an Intel chipset. Still my patch is needed on my system.

---

I have no experience in getting things changed in the kernel =>
attaching the corrected patch. But if you reassign the bug to "linux-
kernel" and mark this bug as duplicate of bug 405294 I'll try to do my
very best.

I'd need insight from the OpenStack Team on this how nova might interfere here.
This is out of my area of expertise now - but UCA Team is already
subscribed so that should be ok.

This is intentional and ok.
If you'd fully restart the service it would loose some of the logs.
Instead see [1] in section "signals" virtlogd is designed to reload
itself via exeve.
This is how it is same-pid but new code while maitaining open logs.

[Bug 1707352] Re: the change from libsane to libsane1 broke many (all?) 3rd party plug-ins for sane

2018-01-29 Thread PeterPall
I hope this patch might make things work out-of-the-box on new installs.

I didn't find out how to prevent the link from /usr/lib64/ to
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu to appear on ia32. But hey don't harm.

And I didn't find any good way to handle the case that libsane is
updated when /usr/lib64 already exists: I can move all the 3rd-party
sane drivers over to the new directory. But what happens if there are
other libraries from the system that is upgraded and that still lie in
this directory?

An alternative would be finding out the names of all packages epson and
brother provide and symlink every file individually. Is it feasible to
create such a list?

** Patch added: "The 1st try to create a patch that makes libsane1 work
out-of-the-box with popular scanners."

[Bug 405294] Re: A2DP Bluetooth audio skips terribly ["Skipping NNN us (= MMM bytes) in audio stream"]

2018-01-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
On second thoughts... it's been suggested today that this problem can be
caused by some wifi drivers disabling Bluetooth/Wifi coexistence by
default. When this happens and you're connected to a 2.4GHz wifi network
you wifi signal may drown out the Bluetooth.

So I wonder; can people who experience this problem please let us know
what model wifi/bluetooth chips you have? You can probably get that
information by running "lspci -k" and maybe from "lsusb".

[Bug 1746164] Re: Enable Bluetooth-Wifi coexistence by default [bluetooth audio and network skip on Wifi activity]

2018-01-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also, if all you would like to change is kernel parameters:

  options ath9k btcoex_enable=1 bt_ant_diversity=1

then that's a kernel bug/enhancement. Not something that bluez should be
involved in...

It appears those two parameters are uninitialized by default (so default
to zero/off??):

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/init.c#n58

Sounds like a simple kernel fix/enhancement to turn them on by default.

[Bug 1746164] [NEW] Enable Bluetooth-Wifi coexistence by default [bluetooth audio and network skip on Wifi activity]

2018-01-29 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

By default BT audio works fine on Ubuntu - if there is no WiFi active:
Both work on the same frequency range, 2 WiFi channel is about 20
Bluetooth Channels wide and every time a WiFi package is sent bluetooth
risks a packet loss.

Creating a file named /etc/modprobe.d/bluetooth-audio.conf with the
following content:

options ath9k btcoex_enable=1 bt_ant_diversity=1

resolves the problem and drastically increases bluetooth throughput for
all other use cases (bluetooth networking that doesn't drop every time
the WiFi probes something, lower latency Bluetooth HIDs.

We should ship things in a way that they work out-of-the-box => I am all
for providing this file with Ubuntu, possibly with Bluez.

In the case of my laptop btcoex_enable=1 would already do the trick.

[Bug 1711337] Re: Firefox crashes at start on armv7L after 55.0.1 update

2018-01-29 Thread James Donald
Darn, and I see the same error with Firefox 59. Your stack trace still
shows the illegal instruction in sk_xor__vfp4(). It seems like something
is now running Skia even when it's disabled in the config.

Among rendering differences, from the Firefox 58 blog post there's those
changes for OMTP which could have affected this:
https://mozillagfx.wordpress.com/2017/12/05/off-main-thread-painting/

If it's now going into Skia when it shouldn't that's a Firefox 58
regression. It would be somewhat of a bug affecting non-armhf platforms
too so we could finally get the attention of the Mozilla team.

Meanwhile the bad assembly in SkJumper_generated.S still seems like an
Ubuntu-specific problem. Is anyone able to reach the Ubuntu dev team on
IRC so that can set this bug's status back to "confirmed"?

[Bug 1584457] Re: gsd-backlight-helper spamming the logs since upate to 16.04

2018-01-29 Thread Brian Burch
upgraded from 17.04 to 17.10 64-bit desktop. ASUS Transformer T300 CHI-
FL005H. kernel 4.13.0-32-generic and gnome-settings-daemon
3.26.2-0ubuntu0.1

syslog and journalctl spammed exactly as described - gdm3 and gsd-
backlight-helper --set-brightness

I can confirm "systemctl stop iio-sensor-proxy" causes these messages to
stop, but less frequent errors from org.gnome.Shell.desktop are logged
repeatedly, e.g.

Error.checkin_request.cc(211) failed to get checking response. Fetcher
failed. Retrying.

Followed by various other org.gnome.Shell.desktop messages. I can
provide a log if they might be useful, but I suspect they are triggered
by killing the iio-sensor-proxy and so are probably not very relevant to
the original bug.

[Bug 1732883] Re: uvt-kvm wait command will never return on Trusty with a future guest using systemd such as Xenial

2018-01-29 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Hi Robie,

The 0~bzr92-0ubuntu1.1 is the latest version that I can get from Trusty
repository (another one is 0~bzr92-0ubuntu1). So it's a bit confusing
here, I got the package with apt-get source command, should I use
something else for this specific fix in Trusty?

(And another question just out of curiosity, why we're not using bzr for
the patch review?)

Anyway, thanks for taking a look on this.
I will try to bug someone else.

[Bug 1744072] Re: MIR Chrony in 18.04

2018-01-29 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed chrony version 3.2-1build1 as checked into bionic. This isn't a
full security audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.

- There are ten CVEs in our database; the fixes mostly aren't enumerated
in our database, but many of the descriptions sound like they were
handed out 'conservatively' -- errors in administration-level command
channel or a malicious peer server operator in a position to interpose
  traffic from another peer server.

  I like the paranoia.

- chrony is a new, simpler, smaller, safer, ntp daemon. It's suitable for
client and server use, and supports some hardware drivers, NIC
timestamping, but perhaps not as many features as our old NTPD.

- Build-Depends: debhelper, bison, libedit-dev, libtomcrypt-dev,
  libcap-dev, pps-tools, libseccomp-dev, pkg-config, asciidoctor

- libtomcrypt dependency is being worked on; apparently nss is an option
once we expose an "internal only" library.

- Does daemonize, nicely
- pre/post inst/rm scripts have autogenerated sections. Also:
- postinst script creates _chrony user and group, chowns /var/log/chrony
  and /var/lib/chrony
- postinst cleans up after previous version "key" file (authentication has
been simplified in newer versions) in a complicated set of comparisons
- postrm removes /var/lib/chrony/, /etc/chrony/, _chrony user and group
- Initscript uses start-stop-daemon to start chrony
- systemd unit file is simple
- No dbus services
- No setuid files
- chronyc and chronyd executables in PATH
- No sudo fragments
- No udev rules
- test suite run at build; not comprehensive, but nice to have
- clean build logs

- sendmail is spawned to send mail via popen(). All variables are under
control of configuration file. No error handling in case the admin sets
the "mail to" variable to something silly long or dangerous, but this is
  very low risk.

- Memory management looked careful
- file io looked careful
- logging looked careful
- TZ environment variable used to gather information on leap seconds,
  looked careful
- Privileged operations looked careful
- I did not inspect cryptography
- Privileged portions of the code, privsep-style, looked careful; I did
  not inspect privsep for safety
- Extensive networking, looked careful
- No temporary file handling
- No WebKit
- No JavaScript
- No PolicyKit
- Clean cppcheck

Errors are checked religiously, coding style is unique and awkward but not
a real impediment to maintenance. Obviously ntp is an involved protocol
and probably further flaws will be found -- and we will rely upon
upstream's help for all but the simplest of issues. It looks
professionally programmed.

The only issue I found has no security relevance but may be slightly
surprising:

- reference() uses snprintf() to build a string to call sendmail; the
username may not fit in the allocated space, and the code gets no
  warning about this.

Any shell metacharacters in this setting would interfere with proper
  operation of the program.

I'd like to see this addressed for reliability reasons but it's not a
pressing issue.

Security team ACK for promoting chrony to main.

Thanks

[Bug 1746149] [NEW] lightdm crashes when unlocking system- User attempting to unlock is logged out

2018-01-29 Thread The Computer Geek
Public bug reported:

Sometimes when I go to unlock my system, lightdm will crash and log me
out. This is infuriatingly annoying. This usually happens when my system
is either locked and then left alone for over 20 minutes, or when my
system locks due to inactivity.

Ubuntu version: 16.04.3 LTS
lightdm version: 1.18.3-0ubuntu1.1 500
What I expect to happen:
1) I lock the computer or it locks on it's own
2) It's left alone for over 20 minutes
3) I go to unlock
4) It unlocks and everything's open

What actually happens:
1) I lock the computer or it locks on it's own
2) It's left alone for over 20 minutes
3) I go to unlock
4) The screen goes black for 2 to 5 seconds, then comes back up a login prompt
5) I login
6) I get a desktop, and everything's been closed

This is the output of /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log after the incident:

[Bug 1746146] Re: eog rotate moves small strip of pixels to other side of image

2018-01-29 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
If you look at the right edge of the image, opposite to the "C", the
rest of the "C" as it fades out can be seen - but the dark area is to
the left, not the right.

This appears to indicate that the columns of pixels that are transferred
are brought over in reversed order (mirrored).

(If the chopped-off gap-leading-to-"C" were not reversed, the dark area
would be on the right fading to the left as it leads from the "C" into
the gap).

I hope that I have described clearly enough, what I am seeing...

Yes the command should eventually print an https:// URL which you can

[Bug 1746146] [NEW] eog rotate moves small strip of pixels to other side of image

2018-01-29 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
Public bug reported:

I have been using Hugin to assemble panoramas, but until this one, they
were all horizontal (all photos to be assembled right to left).

This one contained four images vertically oriented, so to line them up,
I copied them and rotated them 90 degrees counterclockwise with eog and
saved through eog, and then pointed Hugin at the rotated images
(Possibly Hugin could make a vertical panorama without my doing this,
but I didn't try...)

After the panorama image was complete, I copied it and rotated it into a
vertical orientation again (90 degrees clockwise) and saved through eog.

Imagine my surprise, when I looked at the final image, and saw a strip
of pixels on the right that didn't look right.

Upon closer inspection, I found that they seemed to match the pixels on
the left edge.

When rotating, the image appears correct. It is only after saving, and
re-invoking eog on the image that the problem is visible.

It is not a display problem, as the copied/moved pixel columns show up
when the image is shown with ImageMagick, and GIMP.

With GIMP, by blowing up the display to 400%, and watching the pixel
coordinates as I move my mouse from the left to the right over the false
pixel columns, it appears that the number of pixel columns copied or
moved is 7.

Upon further research, When I have GIMP blow up both images equally, it seems
clear that the pixel columns are being cut off from the left side of the image,
and attached to the right side.
(In the attached images, if you look at the "C" on the left (about 75% of the
way down, at the edge), you will see that it lines up almost exactly with the
edge of the image, yet in the horizontal image, there is a gap between the edge
and the "C" (that appears also to be about 7 pixels wide))

[Bug 1746141] [NEW] Input level keeps changing even when there's no Mic attached

2018-01-29 Thread David Chen
Public bug reported:

Summary:
On a device without build-in microphone, plug-unplug headset, on
gnome-control-center sound setting input tab, input level keeps going up and
down even without mic/headset attached.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Fresh install Ubuntu 17.10.1 image
2. Boot up the device
3. Plug a headset(with mic) in the GHS jack
4. Open Sound settings(gnome-control-center)
5. Switch to "Input" tab, adjust the input volume amplifier to 100%, and then
notice that input level will start to float
6. Leave sound setting UI as open, unplug the headset => Problem: input volume
amplifier is still editable and input level keeps floating.

Expected behavior:
Ideally, when headset is unplugged, the input volume amplifier should become
in-editable and input level shouldn't keep floating.

Actual behavior:
Input level keeps moving.

[Bug 1746004] Re: Desktop Action menus of Remmina are not translated

2018-01-29 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Yeah, I saw the upstream .desktop file, and for some reason those
translations are dropped when the package is built. Can't tell exactly
how that happens.

Is there any example of a package where that kind of .desktop
translations are successfully ending up in LP? In other packages the
.desktop file is included in POTFILES.in and the strings make it to the
.po files that way.

@AsciiWolf: Thanks for clarifying; I didn't realize it was a coincident.

[Bug 1746138] [NEW] Poor kwin performance on cold boot

2018-01-29 Thread Michael MacEachern
Public bug reported:

On a fresh install of Kubuntu 17.10, I am finding that the performance
of kwin is not quite what it should be. This problem is at least more
noticable on my older AMD Athlon II laptop. Basically what happens is,
if I open up Terminal, and hit the application launcher, it's choppy
when it slides out. Nothing I have done seems to help, even disabling
tripple buffering via variables. What I have noticed however, is if I
simply logout, or kwin_x11 --replace &, this issue goes completely away.
This is not expected behavior and one shouldn't need to be restarting
kwin after they just have cold booted the machine. Some of my other
laptops and desktops have not exhibited this behavior, so I don't know
what the trigger is, or why this is happening.
