[Bug 1760264] Re: New version of intel-microcode freezes computer

2018-03-30 Thread Paul Nickerson
For me, both intel-microcode 3.20180312.0~ubuntu17.10.1 amd64 and linux-
image-4.13.0-37-generic 4.13.0-37.42 amd64 got installed at the same
time. On my next boot and every boot after that, my computer would hang
hard after I typed in my password at the login screen and hit enter. My
cursor would appear on a black screen, and then it hung.

I did not try downgrading intel-microcode, but I did try selecting
linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic 4.13.0-36.40 amd64 in GRUB on boot. That
did work.

So I believe we may have found two different workarounds to the same
bug, maybe.

I was able to SSH into the computer from a different machine while at
the login screen and run journalctl -f before I tried to log in, and
that got me more log entries than were written to disk. But, I still
feel like I did not get to see the final actions before the hang; they
never got logged or didn't make it over the SSH tunnel.

[Bug 1760261] [NEW] log in to GUI in U-MATE daily 18.04 fails

2018-03-30 Thread Fritz Hudnut
Public bug reported:

Tried two installs on a daily of U-MATE 18.04 burned to DVD, and each
time the install seemed to go well, no errors reported, no crash reports
filed . . . on reboot, grub loads and the MATE log in window opens,
typing the password brings a black screen for a few seconds, and then
back to the log in window.

Tried to install another DE to test whether that would work and that
also failed. Ran "dpkg" in the recovery system . . . found some updates
but couldn't seem to download them; back into TTY and ran update/upgrade
. . . showed 75 packages, which it installed . . . didn't fix the
failure to log in problem. Did an "ls -l /home/username" . . . and it
showed the /home contents of the directory as being there, but the
system is not logging into the GUI.

[Bug 1760206] Re: Firefox cant install extensions from extensions.gnome.org

2018-03-30 Thread dino99
Steps to follow when a problem comes up:
- search a similar issue on the net; maybe you can fix it yourself.
- glance for help on ubuntuforums
- search and/or ask on askubuntu
- if its really a bug, then report it via the required script. Otherwise ask
yourself if you are doing things the right way.

http://www.ubuntubuzz.com/2017/10/install-gnome-shell-extensions-on-ubuntu-artful.html

https://askubuntu.com/questions/5121/how-do-i-report-a-bug

Note: extensions are better installed via the ubuntu archive now, for
compatibility and avoid conflict/race with a different path. So run:
sudo rm -rf ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions

[Bug 1758699] Re: [CVE] JavaScript in a book can access local files using XMLHttpRequest

2018-03-30 Thread Simon Quigley
I have reached a point where I would like some guidance as to the
contents of the patch for the CVE-2018-7889 Trusty backport.

So, this is the line in src/calibre/gui2/viewer/bookmarkmanager.py that
has been patched upstream for this:

 def item_to_bm(self, item):
-return cPickle.loads(bytes(item.data(Qt.UserRole)))
+return item.data(Qt.UserRole).copy()

(
https://github.com/kovidgoyal/calibre/commit/aeb5b036a0bf657951756688b3c72bd68b6e4a7d
)

Here is my attempt to backport it:

 def item_to_bm(self, item):
-return cPickle.loads(bytes(item.data(Qt.UserRole).toPyObject()))
+return item.data(Qt.UserRole).copy()

This errors out on runtime with this error: "AttributeError: 'QVariant'
object has no attribute 'copy'"

I tried changing "return item.data(Qt.UserRole).copy()" to "return
item.data(Qt.UserRole).toPyObject().copy()" but I'm thrown "TypeError:
key PyQt4.QtCore.QString(u'pos') is not a string"

I expect that there are somewhat significant codebase differences due to
the fact that Trusty is based off of PyQt4 while Bionic is based off of
PyQt5, but I am a bit stumped at why this error would be thrown.

I've subscribed Marc directly because I have worked with him on this
(briefly, via IRC), and I'm a bit out of time at the moment (18.04 is
near) to be researching old PyQt4 syntax, but if I'm missing something
obvious, please yell.

Thanks.

[Bug 1759821] Re: Dell XPS 13 9360 bluetooth scan can not detect any device

2018-03-30 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Xenial SRU request submitted:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2018-March/091275.html

** Description changed:

+ == SRU Justification ==
+ This bug currently exists in the 4.4.0-118 -proposed kernel. Due to this
+ bug, a Dell XPS 13 9360 bluetooth scan can not detect any devices.
+
+ This regression was caused by mainline commit fd865802c6. This commit was
reverted
+ in mainline by the requested commit, 7d06d5895c15. This commit was already
+ reverted in upstream stable 4.4.116 by commit: 356c942. However, Xenial
-proposed only
+ has up to the 4.4.114 stable updates. This regression has been in the 4.4
kernel
+ since 4.4.110(Ubuntu 4.4.0-117).
+
+
+ == Fix ==
+ 7d06d5895c15 ("Revert "Bluetooth: btusb: fix QCA Rome suspend/resume"")
+
+ == Regression Potential ==
+ Low. This revert was also cc'd to upstream stable and is in the upstream
4.4.y
+ kernel. This revert should happen to prevent a regression from moving to
-updates
+ from -proposed.
+
+ == Test Case ==
+ A test kernel was built with this patch and tested by the original bug
reporter.
+ The bug reporter states the test kernel resolved the bug.

[Bug 1759732] Re: [Lubuntu] Having zram support means that encrypted LVM installs don't work

2018-03-30 Thread Simon Quigley
> I agree. I think it is sane for partman-auto-crypto to unmount zram or
skip the checks for it.

I remember briefly looking into this and seeing a conditional with one
exception in there so far, so adding this might be trivial. That's
probably the solution here.

> Is zram still in use, in the installed systems too?

No, just on the live system.

> Does it affect encryption at rest? (e.g. does zram memory remain
unencrypted upon hybernate?)

No, because it isn't in the default install (and the live image is not
encrypted).

I eventually noticed that too.
So it means that the problem follows the microcode - nothing to do with the

[Bug 1759920] Re: intel-microcode 3.20180312.0 causes lockup at login screen(w/ linux-image-4.13.0-37-generic)

2018-03-30 Thread 林博仁
** Description changed:

  I don't know if this is a problem with the kernel or the microcode, but
  we have a significant number of computers in our organization (on both
  16.04 and 17.10) that fail if they have both updated. Booting with
  either linux-image-4.13.0-36-generic or intel-microcode
  3.20180108.0+really20170707ubuntu17.10.1 allows all these computers to
  boot.
+
+ ## Workaround ##
+ 1. Boot the system with the dis_ucode_ldr kernel boot parameter to temporary
avoid the problem:
+https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters
+ 2. Install the previous version of package from
+
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-security-proposed/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/14261530/+files/intel-microcode_3.20180108.0+really20170707ubuntu16.04.1_amd64.deb
+ 3. (Optional) Hold the package so that it won't be upgraded accidentally
+sudo apt-mark hold intel-microcode

[Bug 1760240] [NEW] Write past end of buffer in gtk/gtkrc.c gtk_rc_add_default_file

2018-03-30 Thread Kirk Wolff
Public bug reported:

In all repositories there is a buffer-overrun in the function
gtk_rc_add_default_file(), where if the dynamic array
gtk_rc_default_files has exactly max_default_files entries, a NULL will
be written past the allocated memory. The resize function does not
resize the null terminated array in this case, and address sanitizer
(and valgrind) detects a memory access violation in any code leading to
this function.

The following code is in error ( from
https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/precise/gtk+2.0/precise-proposed/view/head:/gtk/gtkrc.c#L596
 )
{{{
  for (n = 0; n < max_default_files; n++)
{
  if (gtk_rc_default_files[n] == NULL)
break;
}

  if (n == max_default_files)
{
  max_default_files += 10;
  gtk_rc_default_files = g_renew (gchar*, gtk_rc_default_files,
max_default_files);
}

  gtk_rc_default_files[n++] = g_strdup (filename);
  gtk_rc_default_files[n] = NULL;
}}}

Proposed modified implementation is as follows:
{{{
  for (n = 0; n < (max_default_files-1); n++)
{
  if (gtk_rc_default_files[n] == NULL)
break;
}

  if (n >= (max_default_files-1))
{
  max_default_files += 10;
  gtk_rc_default_files = g_renew (gchar*, gtk_rc_default_files,
max_default_files);
}

  gtk_rc_default_files[n++] = g_strdup (filename);
  gtk_rc_default_files[n] = NULL;
}}}

This implementation should be changed in all branches:

guarantees the appropriate parser is executed.

[Bug 1759791] Re: NFS + sec=krb5 is broken

2018-03-30 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I built a test kernel with a revert of mainline commit 9fa68f6. The test
kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1759791

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

Note, to test this kernel, you need to install both the linux-image and
linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Thanks in advance!

Same issue. It's been occurring for a couple of weeks. It's unrelated to
me updating anything. I don't have Virtualbox, Playonlinux or anything.
It comes and goes. This morning I step away from my computer, no
anomolies when screen locks. This afternoon, it's happening again. I
made no updates.

[Bug 1758946] Re: virtualbox-guest-utils update caused Synaptic to stop working

2018-03-30 Thread Karlchen
Hello, LocutusOfBorg.

In version virtualbox-guest-x11 (5.1.34-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.2) line 26 of the
file
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/98vboxadd-xclient
now reads:
   notify-send "VBoxClient: the VirtualBox kernel service is not running.
Exiting."

In version virtualbox-guest-x11 (5.0.40-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.2) line 26 of the
file
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/98vboxadd-xclient
still read:
   true # "VBoxClient: the VirtualBox kernel service is not running. Exiting."

It is imaginable that it is the notify-send is what makes Linux Mint 18.x
malfunction.
Maybe reverting to the old statement
   true # "VBoxClient: the VirtualBox kernel service is not running. Exiting."

would work around the issue.

Sadly, I cannot really test myself at the moment. The latest update of
mintupdate has not only uninstalled the 3 virtualbox-guest-* packages, but also
made sure they cannot be re-installed at all.
Unless I find a way of reverting this specific package ban I may not be able to
try myself at all.

Regards,
Karl

[Bug 1760102] Re: Ubuntu 18.04: Please don't enable automatic suspend!

2018-03-30 Thread Jeremy Bicha
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1759008 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1759008

Yes, this only affects desktops that uses GNOME settings (Ubuntu, GNOME,
Unity, Budgie).

We will probably be changing the setting to only auto-suspend by default
when on battery power. That addresses most people's concerns while still
being useful to someone who accidentally left their laptop unplugged for
a while.

This is being tracked in LP: #1759008 so I'm marking this bug a
duplicate of that bug.

[Bug 1760220] [NEW] ubuntu-bug with program path says as a snap does not belong to a package

2018-03-30 Thread Brian Murray
Public bug reported:

apport's ui.py file contains the following code:

 809 # executable?
 810 elif '/' in self.args[0]:
 811 pkg = apport.packaging.get_file_package(self.args[0])
 812 if not pkg:
 813 optparser.error('%s does not belong to a package.' %
self.args[0])
 814 sys.exit(1)
 815 self.args = []
 816 self.options.filebug = True
 817 self.options.package = pkg

This will not provide any useful information about what to do if the
'executable' is provided by a snap. Information similar to
https://code.launchpad.net/~juliank/ubuntu/bionic/apport/snap/+merge/342207
should be provided if the path is from a snap.

[Bug 1661876] Re: [Asus UX360UA] battery status in unity-panel is not changing when battery is being charged

2018-03-30 Thread tjiagoM
I think I did as I described in #48. Did I miss some step?

I (think) I have enabled proposed by:

Adding:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial-proposed restricted main
multiverse universe

to /etc/apt/sources.list

And creating the file /etc/apt/preferences.d/proposed-updates with the
following content:
Package: *
Pin: release a=xenial-proposed
Pin-Priority: 400

I have run "sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade", reboot, but no
4.13 option appear in grub. Just the ones I currently have (like 4.16,
4.4, etc)

What am I doing wrong here?
