- proposed kernel (linux-image-generic/artful-proposed,now 4.13.0.38.41

[Bug 1761694] [NEW] Ubuntu-Server does not launch after kernel update to 4.4.0-116

2018-04-06 Thread Falk Ziegler
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu-Server 14.04.5 LTS in a HyperV-VM with the Xenial
HWE-Stack enabled. Until the kernel 4.4.0-112 everything ran smoothly,
but with the kernel update to 4.4.0-116 the system cannot be launched
and stops during the boot with the following error message:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
  - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait for the right device?)
  - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/99acf869-911c-47ae-917f-7e82d3c99b8e does not exists.
Dropping to a shell!

Also same behaviour with the latest kernel 4.4.0-119.

I already tried to boot with the rootdelay=10 argument but this has no effect.
If you need further informations please tell me. Thanks for your support.

Best regards
Falk

[Bug 1761693] Re: Wifi realtek 8822be BUG

2018-04-06 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1761693/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1761693] [NEW] Wifi realtek 8822be BUG <=18.04

2018-04-06 Thread paag
Public bug reported:

I am a regular linux user and i have bought last week a new computer
that comes with the realtek 8822be wireless chipset.

While using Ubuntu 16.04(Kernel version updated to 4.14 where we started
to have support to this chipset) or both 18.04 beta 1 and final version
i found a problem:

1º when i boot all this versions with the kernel version >= 4.14, i
found out that the driver is instaled and she is detected in the network
manager.Anyway, when i used she won´t work and in few secconds later
will shutdown. When i go to the wifi settings i can´t find networks!

2º I use modprobe so that i can manipulate my drivers/modules and i can start
to work with my wifi card:
-> modprobe -rv r8822be
-> modprobe -v  r8822be aspm=0

The problem is that when i connect to a 5ghz frequency router, i have
very slow download speed 8 mbps max (Usually my speed is approximately
200/210 mbps in wifi mode). In the outher hand when i connect to a
2.4ghz frequency router it works fine!

Thanks

Best regards

backporting to bionic (note that there is already an ibus update in the

[Bug 1746806] Re: sssd appears to crash AWS c5 and m5 instances, cause 100% CPU

2018-04-06 Thread Walter Zulin Junior
That's good news!

I have tested both kernels in multiple C5/M5 instances (more than 80)
with SSSD and AppArmor enabled in N.Virginia, and I could not face one
single failure. It seems that this new kernel version fixed the issue.

It would be good to get more feedbacks and push this kernel release a
soon as possible.

[Bug 1761689] [NEW] Grub2 failed to install

2018-04-06 Thread Suresh Nimbalkar
Public bug reported:

I was upgrading from 16.04 to 18.04. The main reason for upgrade is
constant problems with WI-FI in 16.04.

I have a UEFI system, hence, in my view, GRUB is not required. However,
Ubuntu installs GRUB by default. I had the GRUB installed from 16.04. I
had tried removing the GRUB using CMD commands before trying to install
18.04. However, when I rebooted the system, GRUB greeted me to 16.04.

I started 18.04 installation as an upgrade to 16.04. The installer
failed to install GRUB.

[Bug 1750937] Re: 4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and 16.04) due to outdated gcc-4.8

2018-04-06 Thread Dmitry S
Running Ubuntu 16.04 (xenial) in VirtualBox (Windows host). After Ubuntu update
got affected too - vboxdrv dkms won't install. dmesg would give:
[ 260.993242] vboxdrv: version magic '4.4.0-119-generic SMP mod_unload
modversions ' should be '4.4.0-119-generic SMP mod_unload modversions retpoline
'

$ uname -a
Linux ... 4.4.0-119-generic #143-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 2 16:08:24 UTC 2018 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

In my case I had two GCC versions installed side by side (4.9 and 5):
$ sudo update-alternatives --config gcc
There are 2 choices for the alternative gcc (providing /usr/bin/gcc).

  SelectionPath Priority Status

  0/usr/bin/gcc-5 20auto mode
* 1/usr/bin/gcc-4.9   10manual mode
  2/usr/bin/gcc-5 20manual mode

update-alternatives was pointing to 4.9, so g++ --version was giving me 4.9:
$ gcc --version
gcc (Ubuntu 4.9.3-13ubuntu2) 4.9.3

Switched to version 5 and re-installed virtualbox-dkms:

$ sudo update-alternatives --config gcc
There are 2 choices for the alternative gcc (providing /usr/bin/gcc).

  SelectionPath Priority Status

  0/usr/bin/gcc-5 20auto mode
  1/usr/bin/gcc-4.9 10manual mode
* 2/usr/bin/gcc-5 20manual mode

Press to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number: 2

$ sudo apt-get install virtualbox-dkms --reinstall

[Bug 1757072] Re: new session brings: "The panel encountered a problem while loading "BriskMenuFactory::BriskMenu".

2018-04-06 Thread noergeljoerg
The problem is still there in my system. Is there anything I can provide to get
it solved?
The fact that you cannot reproduce it does not mean that the problem does not
exist at all...

In the error dialog I get asked "Do you want to delete the applet from
your configuration?". When I press one of the buttons ("Don't Delete" or
"Delete") nothing happens.

The workaround to change the layout does not work anymore. I have to
logout and login again. So it seems this happens only after a reboot or
when the computer was switched off before.

[Bug 1761681] [NEW] Kubuntu - Installation - Disk Setup - Configuration of encrypted volumes failed

2018-04-06 Thread Do Re
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 18.04 daily 2018-04-04. [systemcrashing]
reproduceable on AMD64 and i386 (downloads SAH256 checked)
i hit this also on a previous daily-build some days before

steps to reproduce:

While booting Live-USB and install Kubuntu via UI
at the point
- Disk Setup
with the option
- Guided - use entire disk and set up encrypted LVM

a message appears:

"Configuration of encrypted volumes failed
An error occurred while configuring encrypted volumes.
The configuration have been aborted."

After trying multiple times to install with encrypted LVM with the error
message coming again and again i startet without encryption. than there
have been the errormessage written above that stopped the installation.
fter klicking back a partition was created with about half of my
disksize without advising to do so. Crash with message like "volume has
not enough space" resulting in black screen and reboot. And Error
informing kernal ... (please see the pictures i made)

now the USB-Stick is not anymore in the bootable devices and booting my
harddrive let me see a blinking _ underline on a black screen

Not sure if i am right place here; It was not possible for me to create a new
empty bugreport. Failed installtaion made my system unbootable so i can not
report out of the damaged system. Please be so kind to put this in the right
place if necessary. Sorry im not at all expirienced with debugging or such. It
is a new Laptop with PCI-Express SSD and Intel Core i3-7100U. "Acer Swift 3

Public bug reported:

At the end of installation, after clicking the Restart now button, GUI
closes, screen shows "print_req_error: I/O error, dev loop0, sector
2420404" and lines for four more sectors. and "SQUASHFS
error:squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0xbd54f4b" and lines for
several more blocks. Continued repeating these lines for five minutes,
then I did REISUB to reboot.Reboot is to text. Logging in and doing
"startx" gets a graphical session that seems good. This is on a Lenovo

[Bug 1761674] [NEW] [Ubuntu 16.04] kernel: fix rwlock implementation

2018-04-06 Thread bugproxy
Public bug reported:

Description: kernel: fix rwlock implementation
Symptom: Kernel hangs, due to deadlock on an rwlock.
Problem: With upstream commit 94232a4332de ("s390/rwlock: improve writer
fairness") rwlock writer fairness was supposed to be
implemented. If a writer tries to take an rwlock it sets
unconditionally the writer bit within the lock word and waits
until all readers have released the lock. This however can lead
to a deadlock since rwlocks can be taken recursively by readers.
If e.g. CPU 0 holds the lock as a reader, and CPU 1 wants to
write-lock the lock, then CPU 1 sets the writer bit and
afterwards busy waits for CPU 0 to release the lock. If now CPU 0
tries to read-lock the lock again (recursively) it will also busy
wait until CPU 1 removes the writer bit, which will never happen,
since it waits for the first reader on CPU 0 to release the lock.
Solution: Revert the rwlock writer fairness semantics again.

Yes exactly.

And this is why I was asking for more guidance on the preferred defaults,
as the addition of an extra type still needs the user to do something (e.g.
selecting that type).

Yeah, as much as upstream can't change 2.11 anymore (which is why you make
it a 2.12 type) we can't change 2.12 yet (in this release).

Ok, will do so.
We will keep the 2.12 type as-is in code, but it might change (if it
changes upstream - unlikely).
While together we will try to keep the bionic types stable.

[Bug 1737979] Re: Wayland freezes with matplotlib

2018-04-06 Thread Giuseppe Scelsi
In my machine matplotlib by default selects the "TkAgg" backend. I
worked around this freezing problem by selecting the "gtk3" backend
instead, as in 'ipython3 --pylab=gtk3'. I had to install
'python3-cairocffi' as requested by a warning at startup and now
everything seems to work well.
