[Bug 1771739] [NEW] Dell Latitude E6400 - Hotkeys for Volume Up, Down, Mute does nothing

2018-05-16 Thread Oa Hyltén-Cavallius
Public bug reported:

The hotkeys for Volume Up, Volume Down and Mute does not work on my Dell
Latitude E6400 running Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 LTS (Gnome version 3.28.1).
They worked fine in Ubuntu 17.10 that I was running before, but haven't
worked since I installed Budgie.

If I go into keyboard settings and configure keyboard shortcuts they are
detected when pressed, and register as "Audio raise volume", "Audio
lower volume" and "Audio mute", but even though correctly configured as
keyboard shortcuts they don't seem to work when pressed.

I have updated both the OS and all of the applications to the newest
available versions, but the problem persists.

[Bug 1771734] [NEW] gedit abnormally use high CPU

2018-05-16 Thread Chia-Hao Hsu
Public bug reported:

Gedit trigger an ubuntu high cpu consumption when the mouse is not in
the windows of gedit.

gnome-shell ate up 50 % of cpu, while Xorg consumed 20 % of cpu, gedit
consumed 30 % of cpu. CPU is not able to cool down, when gedit is opened
and the location of mouse is in other applications instead of gedit. If
the situation goes on, system will hang.

[Bug 1771661] Re: [nvidia] After updating to 18.04 only Wayland works. Cannot get Xorg to work on Gnome

2018-05-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. It looks like you have a hybrid system with both Nvidia/Intel
GPUs.

In case the freezes are caused by something crashing, please also:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
   ubuntu-bug /var/crash/YOURFILE.crash
and tell us the ID of any new bug created.

2. Check for older crashes send from your system by looking at
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the contents of
/var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id. If you find any links to crashes that you
think are relevant then please share them here.

3. Attach output from 'journalctl -b' from right after a failure has
occurred.

Running it from the command line, here is the error message:

LoadPCB: Failed to load existing file "TDAQ_LT1226CurrentAmpBoard.pcb".
Is it supported PCB file?

Note that before copying the element files into it, pcb opened the file
without problems.

[Bug 1771727] [NEW] Calamares doesn't detect time zone correctly

2018-05-16 Thread Ryan Grange
Public bug reported:

Calamares keeps selecting New York as my time zone during installation.
Ubiquity on Ubuntu-Mate dailies correctly detects it as Phoenix.
Perhaps there's a methodology in ubiquity that could be ported to
calamares for better detecting the time zone during installation.

[Bug 1770905] Re: package shim-signed 1.34.9+13-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: installed shim-signed package post-installation script subprocess was killed by signal (Terminated)

2018-05-16 Thread Dan Egnor
Oh my that's a little crazy.

Yes, this is a Dell XPS 13 laptop.

I was upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 (which the laptop came from Dell with)
to 18.04, using the normal update process with X running. During the
upgrade process, it seemingly hung at the shim-signed point. There was
no visible password prompt anywhere. I remember trying to type various
things at the console to no avail. Eventually I killed the upgrade,
which left things in a little bit of a sad state, and I finished the
upgrade from the console, which worked.

After fixing everything up with the newly upgraded OS, some time later,
I got a prompt to report a system problem. I clicked the button to go
ahead and report it, because that seemed like the helpful thing to do. I
had no idea it was reporting the problem that happened way back during
the original upgrade process.

It *was* a real problem, but feel free to discard this bug if there
isn't enough data to be useful!

  what I was doing.

+ But 3 times so far, it took a minute before showing me a login screen

Actually asking for the password twice in "then enter my password. It
then starts to load..." might also be another shell/session crash.
Regardless, please follow the above instructions.

[Bug 1771716] Re: Resuming resets my session

2018-05-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sounds like you have two bugs.

Asking for the password twice is bug 1765261.

But it sounds like you also have a crash causing your lost session so...

-

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your bug report is missing crash details. In
order to debug a crash we will need a crash report. To create one,
please follow these steps:

1. If you are not running a future development release of Ubuntu then apply the
workaround from bug 994921.
2. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport.
3. If the crash is in Xorg then uncomment this option from
/etc/gdm3/custom.conf:
   # Additionally lets the X server dump core if it crashes
   #Enable=true
4. Reboot.
5. Reproduce the crash.
6. Look in /var/crash for crash files and when found, run:
   ubuntu-bug /var/crash/YOURFILE.crash
7. Add a comment here telling us the ID of the new bug that was created in step
6.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments, and doing so is also a
security risk for yourself.

Please:

1. Run this command to attach more information: apport-collect 1771661

2. Run 'lspci -k' and attach its output here.

3. Copy /proc/cmdline and attach it here.

[Bug 1771308] Re: Adding the user to a new group doesn't take effect on logout and back in

2018-05-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
By "running process" I mean any process.

But you're right; I misread "doesn't take effect on logout" as "doesn't
take effect until logout".

One should indeed reasonably expect group changes to apply after the
next login.

[Bug 1771466] Re: Super+D wrongly leaves windows minimized if a new window appears while in "hiding" state

2018-05-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

+
+ ---
+
Toggling Super+D hides or un-hides all windows so you can access icons
  on the desktop.

But this breaks if a new window appears while the windows are hidden:
They become PERMANENTLY hidden, i.e. Super+D does not restore them.
They seem to be "minimized" -- you have to individually un-minimize each
window to get your session back.

This is very annoying, and is common: The only reason for using Super+D
is to see something on the desktop; probably you then need to do
something with it, i.e. click it. If that action opens a new window,
which is almost certain, you're hosed.

  STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

  1. Open a bunch of windows and artfully arrange them.
  2. Type Super+D (they all become hidden)
  3. Double-click the "Trash" desktop icon and wait for a file browser to open.

RESULTS: Once the file-viewer opens, Super+D will not restore the
previously-hidden windows. Instead, it seems to forget about them and
instead hide the new window (and un-hide it if pressed a second time
--before yet another window is opened, of course).

- EXPECTED RESULTS:
-The state should be well-defined: Either normal or windows-hidden.
-Once in the windows-hidden state, Super-D should un-hide the hidden
windows e
-ven if new windows have been created in the interim.
+ EXPECTED RESULTS:
+    The state should be well-defined: Either normal or windows-hidden.
+    Once in the windows-hidden state, Super-D should un-hide the hidden
windows e
+    ven if new windows have been created in the interim.

  SUGGESTED FIX:
  1. (preferred): On the first Super+D, hide all windows and remember their
IDs. On the next Super+D, un-hide just those windows, if they still exist, and
do nothing at all with any other windows which might be present (i.e. new
ones). Then return to the initial state, where Super+D hides all visible
windows.

  2. (if the above is too hard to implement): If a new window appears
while in the "hiding" state, make the new window immediately become
hidden also; only on the second Super+D would the new window become
visible along with the old ones.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1543192 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1543192

Thanks for pointing that out. The error you mention is actually right
before bug 1543192 happens to you:

May 9 11:04:06 jcormier-MS-7A93 /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[2581]: (EE)
Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

error:

So still bug 1543192. Maybe worth commenting on that one about the
above.

+   if resp.status_code == 404:

print does not flush by default. When stdout is a terminal you get an
implicit flush on newline but when it's a pipe you do not and calling
_exit(1) exits the process without flushing the buffers either. Two
fixes suggest themselves: 1) add flush=True to the print() calls 2)
exiting more conventionally by e.g. calling sys.exit()

[Bug 1769420] Re: Odd lxqt-config-file-associations for .jpg and .pdf

2018-05-16 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
I am not sure where someone got the impression I had somehow installed
Lubuntu, and then installed LXQt packages on top of it ("Taking the LXDE
version of Lubuntu and installing LXQt metapackages on it will result in
a different experience. Unfortunately, that's not something the Lubuntu
team does much heavy testing with...")

Both for 17.10 and for 18.04, I installed Lubuntu Next from the
"http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/lubuntu-next/daily-live/pending/; site,
several days before the official Ubuntu release date (because both times
the site stopped "daily"ing about 3-4 days before "release". This
cycle, daily stopped on 4/21, and Ubuntu release was 4/26).

Pure Lubuntu Next - no Franken-LXQt.

By the way = are the first Cosmic Lubuntu dailies the continuation of the
Lubuntu Next dailies - naturally to be greatly altered by the time October
comes around) ?
I.E. the ~same manifest for the first daily.

[Bug 1379531] Re: "Combine sides" should be "combine pages"?

When searching for "side" in launchpad translations it appears that the
author by "sides" means "front/back side". Simply replacing sides by
pages does not seem to be the best wording, either, IMO.

[Bug 1771394] Re: gvfsd-mtp hoovers up all memory

2018-05-16 Thread Steve Childs
I just experienced this too. If you don't need them, remove the adb
files from ubuntu, if you're passing the USB device onto the guest OS,
you don't need them anyway.

FYI, I followed an install guide online, so just reversed the install
line, e.g.

sudo apt-get remove android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot

Sorry if its teaching you to suck eggs, I've just included it for others
if they stumble over the same issue.

[Bug 1769808] Re: System installed nvidia driver turned to black screen after upgrading

2018-05-16 Thread Zhenqing Hu
UPDATE: Following information may provide help
This issue occurred on my laptop which has two video cards, one is independent
nvidia GPU and the other is integrated Intel one. I think this might cause the
problem because on my other laptop only has one nvidia GPU, no such kind of
issue occurred (Although on that laptop, the nvidia driver is not at the
version of 390).

[Bug 1728012] Re: Many 3rd party scanner drivers are broken by a sane change

2018-05-16 Thread Peter Bennett
Brother DCP-7065DN Network Printer & scanner. I just installed Bionic
alongside Xenial. Printer works fine on bionic with the brother drivers
but the scanner is not found. The scanner works with Xenial. For xenial,
after installing the Brother drivers, I had created links using "sudo ln
-sf /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother4.so* /usr/lib/sane/". I ran that on
bionic and the scanner is still not found.

FYI, I (temporarily?) switched to SDDM, so far so good (although a bit

[Bug 1771696] Re: Openbox Apps menu causes error in obamenu

2018-05-16 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Confirmed as well on Bionic. It does not occur with Artful. Xenial
doesn't even have the Applications menu item.

Note running `obamenu` from the terminal produces the following result:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/obamenu", line 181, in
process_dtfile(dtf, category Dict)
  File "/usr/bin/obamenu", line 146, in process_dtfile
if eqi[1][-1] == ';':
IndexError: string index out of range

Speaking for the Lubuntu team, the only reason we have that OpenBox
session is because it comes with OpenBox. We don't really support it.
