[Bug 1774569] [NEW] gsmartcontrol, hdparm, and ZFS all refuse to talk to an apparently working Seagate Backup+ Hub drive after upgrade to 18.04

2018-05-31 Thread Adam Novak
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded from 17.10 to 18.04. After the upgrade, I noticed
that my Seagate Backup+ Hub external drive was displaying a series of
puzzling symptoms:

1. gsmartcontrol can't get SMART data from the drive. I am pretty sure
it used to report SMART data? Here's a log of it not working:

[hz] Warning: exit: Command line did not parse.
[app] execute_smartctl(): Smartctl binary did not execute cleanly.
[app] StorageDevice::execute_device_smartctl(): Smartctl binary did not
execute cleanly.
  [app] SmartctlParser::parse_section_info_property(): Unknown property
"Physical block size"
  [app] SmartctlParser::parse_section_info_property(): Unknown property
"Logical Unit id"
  [app] SmartctlParser::parse_section_info_property(): Unknown property
"Temperature Warning"
  [app] SmartctlParser::parse_section_data(): Unknown Data subsection
encountered.
[hz] Warning: exit: Some SMART command to the disk failed, or there was
a checksum error in a SMART data structure
  [app] SmartctlParser::parse_section_info_property(): Unknown property
"Physical block size"
  [app] SmartctlParser::parse_section_info_property(): Unknown property
"Logical Unit id"
  [app] SmartctlParser::parse_section_info_property(): Unknown property
"Temperature Warning"
  [app] SmartctlParser::parse_section_data(): Unknown Data subsection
encountered.

2. hdparm used to be able to spin down the drive. I had it configured to
spin it down after a few minutes of inactivity, in the hdparm config
file. Now that no longer happens, and hdparm can't seem to talk to the
drive meaningfully at all:

[anovak@octagon ~]$ sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdb

/dev/sdb:
SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 24 00
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 24 00
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

I think this may be related to https://askubuntu.com/questions/1037997
/upgraded-to-18-04-usb-harddrive-doesn-t-idle-anymore which is someone
else having the same problem.

3. The ZFS tools think the drive is hosed:

[anovak@octagon ~]$ sudo zpool status hub
  pool: hub
 state: UNAVAIL
status: One or more devices could not be used because the label is missing
or invalid. There are insufficient replicas for the pool to continue
functioning.
action: Destroy and re-create the pool from
a backup source.
   see: http://zfsonlinux.org/msg/ZFS-8000-5E
  scan: none requested
config:

NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
hubUNAVAIL 0 0 0
insufficient replicas
  ata-ST6000DM003-2CY186_ZF200PC8 UNAVAIL 0 0 0

This may be related to the drive having adopted a new /dev/disk/by-id
name during the upgrade? I think it was "ata-
ST6000DM003-2CY186_ZF200PC8" when I added it to my zpool by its symlink
under /dev/disks/by-id, but now it is "usb-
Seagate_Backup+_Hub_BK_NA8TQC87-0:0":

[anovak@octagon ~]$ ls -lah
/dev/disk/by-id/usb-Seagate_Backup+_Hub_BK_NA8TQC87-0\:0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 May 31 20:52
/dev/disk/by-id/usb-Seagate_Backup+_Hub_BK_NA8TQC87-0:0 -> ../../sdb

This *shouldn't* cause trouble; you should be able to export the zpool
and re-import it under the new name. But zpool import shows nothing to
import:

[anovak@octagon ~]$ sudo zpool import
no pools available to import

And I also can't export or even destroy the busted zpool, because zpool
doesn't think it exists for exporting or destroying purposes:

[anovak@octagon ~]$ sudo zpool export hub
cannot export 'hub': no such pool or dataset
[anovak@octagon ~]$ sudo zpool destroy hub
cannot destroy 'hub': no such pool or dataset

4. The weirdest thing is that the drive itself seems to be working
correctly. I see /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdb9, as expected for a ZFS drive. I
can `cat /dev/sdb1 | xxd | less` and see the data stored on the drive,
including what I think is the ZFS label (at 0x4000, with a bunch of
ZFS-y strings in it) that zpool is upset about not seeing. I see the
partitions in `gparted` just fine, too; there's no indication that
there's anything wrong with the partition table. Even the device's
integrated USB hub

[Bug 1774566] [NEW] Support common-id

2018-05-31 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
snapd reports common ID (i.e. AppApstream) fields. We should expose these in
snapd-glib

[Test Case]
Check snapd-glib exposes the new function:
snapd_app_get_common_id
snapd_snap_get_common_ids

[Regression Potential]
New fields only works if snapd provides them. Tested in regression tests.

[Bug 1774560] [NEW] xdg-desktop-portal-gtk malfunctions on Wayland: wl_display@1.error(zxdg_imported_v1@36, 0, "set_parent_of was called with an invalid child")

2018-05-31 Thread James Henstridge
Public bug reported:

When running on a Wayland session, if xdg-desktop-portal-gtk is asked to
display a window on behalf of a Wayland app, it gets disconnected from
gnome-shell with one of these messages:

Gdk-Message: 09:49:31.837: Lost connection to Wayland compositor.
Gdk-Message: 09:50:28.438: Error 71 (Protocol error) dispatching to Wayland
display.

Running it with WAYLAND_DEBUG=1, the underlying error message that GDK
seems to eat is:

[3471970.531] wl_display@1.error(zxdg_imported_v1@36, 0,
"set_parent_of was called with an invalid child")

That is, when it tries to associate the dialog box with the confined
application's window. It seems the underlying bug is in in Mutter:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/138

According to duflu, the patch referenced in that bug report has been
merged for 3.28.2 and 3.29.2. It seems like a candidate to backport to
bionic if we want portals to work on the (non-default) Wayland session.

2018-05-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Using cosmic image 20180530, I can still see the error briefly. But in
less than a second it's now replaced with a black terminal screen saying
just:

"Please remove the installation medium, then reboot."

So no, pressing Enter does not cause the system to reboot. I have to use
the power button.

No, I do not see any purple screen.

2018-05-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1759497 ***

Ah, sorry. If you're talking about 1.2GB used on login then you must be
talking about the virtual memory size. That's not real memory - only
address space.

For actual memory allocations see the VmData field in /proc/PID/status.

I think it's probably safe to call this a duplicate of bug 1759497 then.

[Bug 1769236] Re: CPU frequency stuck at minimum value

2018-05-31 Thread Glen Ditchfield
I tried thermald 1.7.2, and I can make it work for me, but I don't
think it is the best solution. Please pardon the length at which I
explain my confusion.

I find the thermal-conf files to be confusing. Ubuntu 18.04's
thermald-1.7.0 package installs file /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml.
Based on the way other packages are configured, I would expect this to
be the configuration file, but thermald-1.7.0 ignores it. It seems to
be just a collection of examples.

Is that /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml file really suitable for every
system to use as a default configuration? If it is not OK, then the file
probably should be placed in /usr/share/doc instead of /etc.

The thermal-conf.xml.auto file that 1.7.0 generates for my system
seems to be OK, except for the Temperature element. Do you see any
other problems with it? As far as I know, my only problem is that I
can't override the generated Temperature.

My system runs well if I stop thermald. I don't know how much better
it would run *with* thermald, but "just stop thermald" seems to be an
acceptable fall-back position.

The new thermald-1.7.2 also attempts to read
/etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml.auto, and I could edit a generated
thermal-conf.xml.auto to correct the Temperature element and put it
there. However, the ".auto" suffix would be misleading. I would
rather put the edited file in /etc/thermal-conf.xml.

Thermald-1.7.2 *only* reads the files in /etc if it *can't* generate
the /var/run file. It still doesn't provide a way to override a
successfully generated file. What if the generated file has a bug in
it? What if the user wants to fine-tune the configuration in some way?

Now consider what happens when I install thermald-1.7.2 on my 18.04
system. Similar things could happen to other people in the future, if
Cosmic Cuttlefish adopts 1.7.2 and other people upgrade to Cosmic from
18.04.

- Because of the int3400 check in line 169 of thd_trt_art_reader.cpp,
thermald does not try to generate
/var/run/thermald/thermal-conf.xml.auto.

- Then cthd_parse::parser_init() looks for
  /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml.auto, and does not find
  it.

- Finally cthd_parse::parser_init() looks for
  /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml, finds the
"examples" file, and loads it. As I mentioned above, I don't know
  if that's a good idea.

-

I'd like to suggest the following:

- The thermald package should *not* install
  /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml.

- thermald should first look for /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml and
  load it if it exists.

- If /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml does not exist, thermald should
  generate /var/run/thermald/thermal-conf.xml.auto and load it.

-

Two unimportant points:

- The new thd_log_info message at thd_trt_art_reader.cpp, line 170,
should end with a \n.

- I recommend that cthd_parse::parser_init() log the chosen
xml_config_file's name every time, not just if it chooses the
generated file.

[Bug 241604] Re: Maximum zoom in Evince is 400%

2018-05-31 Thread jcsjcs
It's unfortunate that this bug never gets fixed -- it's now marked as
"expired", but it's still there.
I encourage the developers to try to view this document showing the tariff
regions for public transportation in the Frankfurt/Main region. On my 13"
FullHD screen the station names are impossible to read. The maxium zoom is
around 160%.

https://www.rmv.de/c/de/fahrkarten/regeln/wichtige-tarifinformationen/uebersichtskarte-tarifgebiete/
https://www.rmv.de/c/fileadmin/documents/PDFs/_RMV_DE/Fahrkarten/Regeln/Tarifgesamtplan2018_594x610_171203.pdf

In the past I could work around the problem by using "evince-previewer"
for this task, but that loophole seems to have been closed now as well
(17.10).

I've installed FoxitReader now and it works great -- but it's another
piece of software that needs to be updated by hand...

2018-05-31 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Battant:

>"I have dowlowded a deb archive and install it..."

The way this is worded indicates only one .deb file was installed, which
would be why it didn't show up in GRUB. Did you get a chance to review
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds for guidance?

>"but when I tried to compile the kernel..."

You would't have to compile kernels, as the .debs are compiled for you.

[Bug 1774487] Re: I'm still using 12.04 because 'dist-upgrade' fails.

2018-05-31 Thread Paul White
Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) reached end-of-life on April 28, 2017.

See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades but
probably best to install a currently supported release.

Please install or upgrade to the latest Ubuntu version and re-test. If
you then find the issue is still present in the newer Ubuntu version,
please add a comment here telling us which new version it is in and
change the bug status to Confirmed.

By the way, please don't assign bugs to yourself unless you have the
capability to fix them.

[Bug 1675386] Re: [SRU] all network devices aren't added to instance profile

2018-05-31 Thread Brian Murray
Hello todd, or anyone else affected,

Accepted nova-lxd into xenial-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nova-
lxd/13.3.0-0ubuntu2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-xenial to verification-done-xenial. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-xenial. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 1758306] Re: Cannot switch mouse primary button to Right (left-handed) in Settings

2018-05-31 Thread Trish1274
After poking around Google to find a solution, I came here, and I'm
still stumped. I just upgraded to 18.04 last night, and I tried GCC to
swap my mouse/touchpad buttons back to lefty-normal, and that failed. So
I went to the terminal. "gsettings get
org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.mouse left-handed" comes back with "true".

I saw someone say that there was an update that fixed this, but I've
checked for updates after upgrading, and the only update was for the
Chrome browser. Nothing mouse-related, and my buttons still aren't
right.

Any ideas? This is a major PITA for a lefty who uses these buttons all
the time. Thank goodness it's not my work laptop (can't convince the
office to ditch Windows), but it's still a big problem. In fact, I am
writing this on my work laptop because I kept hitting the wrong button
on my personal one. It's putting me at a bit of a handicap.

[Bug 1758306] Re: Cannot switch mouse primary button to Right (left-handed) in Settings

2018-05-31 Thread Trish1274
Actually, I just tried plugging in my office wireless mouse into the
personal laptop, and the buttons work fine on that. So it's JUST the
buttons with the track pad. In every previous version of Ubuntu I've
used, I've always just changed the touchpad buttons through GCC under
the mouse settings. Is there another way to change settings for the
touchpad?

If it helps, my personal laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad 300.

[Bug 1774120] Re: ebtables cannot be upgraded from 2.0.10.4-3.5ubuntu2 to 2.0.10.4-3.5ubuntu2.18.04.1 on WSL

2018-05-31 Thread Balint Reczey
Please note that WSL properly returns EPROTONOSUPPORT to socket() call
and ebtables binary translates this to a possible permission issue thus
WSL does not have to be fixed because it is not broken.

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-
discuss/2018-May/018072.html

The ebtables.init and prerm fix together let installation proceed without error
and thus is an effective way of dealing with the failure while it does not fix
the root cause of misinterpreting the error code.
This is just for the record, I'm happy that ebtables upgrade does not fail now
on WSL and thanks for fixing it!

[Bug 1774505] [NEW] OSD for volume/brightness should only appear on main display

2018-05-31 Thread Pedro Côrte-Real
Public bug reported:

When watching a movie on an external display it's often useful to adjust
the volume. Currently gnome-shell will display the OSD on both displays
creating an overlay over the video. Unity would only display on the
screen of the app used at the moment. Ideally it would just always show
up on the main display so that you can keep focus on the video app for
other keybindings to still work. I tried searching for an extension to
do this but couldn't find one.

[Bug 1774120] Re: ebtables cannot be upgraded from 2.0.10.4-3.5ubuntu2 to 2.0.10.4-3.5ubuntu2.18.04.1 on WSL

2018-05-31 Thread Dan Streetman
** Description changed:

+ [impact]
+
+ ebtables cannot be upgraded on Ubuntu 18.04 for WSL.
+
+ [test case]
+
+ on a WSL installation that already has ebtables installed (most
+ installations do), try to upgrade the package with apt or dpkg; its
+ prerm script will fail, and prevent the upgrade.
+
+ [regression potential]
+
+ the ebtables init script is changed to never return an error code when
+ called as 'stop', so anything that depends on the script returning an
+ error code when 'stop' fails will no longer work correctly. However,
+ nothing appears to use the 'stop' return value, besides the package's
+ prerm script, which is what is causing the upgrade failure.
+ Additionally, the prerm script is updated to ignore 'failed-upgrade'
+ failures, to allow upgrading over the previous version(s).
+
+ Finally note that the rpm-specific ebtables.spec file that is included
+ in the package specifically ignores the 'stop' return value, i.e.:
+
+ /sbin/service ebtables stop &>/dev/null || :
+
+ [other info]
+
+ note that ebtables is effectively dead upstream, so it's extremely
+ unlikely there will be many more package updates/srus, except to fix
+ minor bugs such as this.
+
+ [original description]
