[Bug 1215524] Re: Thunderbird deletes messages rather than move them to Deleted

2018-08-18 Thread John Rose
Hi G,

I have Ubuntu 16.04 with T'bird 52.9.1 on 2 PCs and Ubuntu 18.04 (clean
installed) with T'bird 52.9.1 on the other. All have same problem. None
of them have a Trash folder. All have a Deleted folder created by T'bird
(i.e. not by me). Your statement about the settings is correct except
that I selected Deleted on Gmail for the 'Move to folder': note that
this is not the Bin sub-folder in the Googlemail (i.e. server) folder.

[Bug 1787788] [NEW] upgrade xenial --> bionic :cannot compute upgrade

2018-08-18 Thread madtownmike1
Public bug reported:

I am unaware of any unsupported packages installed that would prevent the
upgrade from working.
I removed as many ppa's as possible, removed any unsupported programs which
might be a problem, and fixed the parsing error 'Metadata files have errors:
/var/cache/app-info/xmls/fwupd.xml'. I'm at a loss at this point.

[Bug 1767626] Re: cannot upgrade to bionic beaver 18.04 lts

2018-08-18 Thread Mona Brasseaux
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1611737 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1611737

This is not a duplicate issue of bug #1611737 (ROS packages). It is not
even presenting the same error message. It is a libappstream issue.

I was able to find the resolution here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1051536/appstreamcli-appstream-system-
cache-was-updated-but-problems-were-found-metad?noredirect=1=1

First I attempted to reinstall with 'sudo apt install --reinstall
libappstream2' because many are resolving the problem that way. My
attempt returned an error that the program could not be found.

Then I used 'sudo apt-get purge libappstream2' and it both uninstalled
whatever was there, then automatically installed the packages that were
needed.

I was then able to proceed successfully with my upgrade to 18.04.1, from
16.04

[Bug 1787782] [NEW] Hanging keys on Thinkpad

2018-08-18 Thread Ludwig S.
Public bug reported:

Under Ubuntu 18.04 the keys of my Thinkpad E480 are hanging very often.
Then, instead of pressed once, the key seems to be not released and
pressed continuously until another key is pressed. I have described the
behavior in more detail under https://askubuntu.com/questions/1051508
/hanging-keys-under-ubuntu-18-04.

It does not occur when I boot in Windows or Ubuntu 16.04, so it is not related
to the hardware.
It does not occur when I plug in an external keyboard, so it is not related to
general Ubuntu keyboard settings.
It does not occur when the power cable (USB-C) is unplugged, only when t is
plugged in.

/var/log/syslog logs the following when the cable is plugged in:
"kernel: [ 9821.899727] thinkpad_acpi: EC reports that Thermal Table has

[Bug 1682863] Re: gnome-games-app doesn't pick up libretro cores due to missing descriptor files

2018-08-18 Thread Jeremy Bicha
amano, one major usability bug for this issue is LP: #1787780

For best results, each of these libretro cores should have an Appstream
addon metadata file too.

See https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-games/issues/79 for the missing
libretro files.

[Bug 1787780] [NEW] gnome-games-app has broken AppStream metadata

2018-08-18 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Impact
--
The metadata license field in gnome-games-app's Appstream metadata is not
recognized as valid by appstream-generator. Because of this, the metadata is
not used and the entry in the GNOME/Ubuntu Software app is a minimal entry
generated from its .desktop. That introduces a major problem where the libretro
addons do not show up in the GNOME Software app on the GNOME Games page. This
makes it much more difficult for people to install the libretro addons needed
to play many games.

http://appstream.ubuntu.com/bionic/universe/issues/gnome-games-app.html

Test Case
-
1. Please wait up to a day after the update is built and published for the
metadata to be published to the Ubuntu Software app.
2. Make sure that Ubuntu Software is not running. You can do this by logging
out and logging back in or by running a command like
pkill gnome-software
3. Open Ubuntu Software.
4. Search for GNOME Games. Click the GNOME Games result.
It should show a screenshot and 3 (or maybe more) addons.

Regression Potential

This is a very minimal fix cherry-picked from upstream's gnome-3-28 branch.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2018-08-18 Thread yak mandango
$HOME/snap is for user content. User content should be user-accessible.
However, it looks like the feature is not very user-friendly. Should
users need to change how they organize their files, to gain access to
the features of snap?

For example, today the firefox snap created $HOME/snap/firefox, along
with three files in there: two empty directories (118, common) and a
symlink (current -> 118). My initial impressions are below.

First, the name of the top-level directory is named after an
application, rather than being called something meaningful to a user.
What has been snapped? Are we talking *oh, snap*? Fingers snapping?
Twigs? Camera shutters? I don't mean to criticize the name of the
project, but by putting that name as a directory in $HOME, these are the
questions a user might have. Particularly if the user doesn't know what
the snap application is or does.

Second, two extra hierarchical levels adds complexity that seems
unnecessary. Why do I need to navigate through this? What organizational
purpose does it serve, to offset the time it takes to use?

Third, the files created under $HOME/snap/firefox are named nothing that
makes sense to a user. What is 118 anyway?

Fourth, the organization behind the files under $HOME/snap/firefox
doesn't make any initial sense. Why is current a symlink? Are these
files versioned somehow? Is that specific to firefox, or generic to
snap?

Finally, taken together these first points make the content of
$HOME/snap seem quite opaque. That conflicts with their stated purpose
of being for user content.

After reading [most of] the comments on this bug, I decided to test it
out. I downloaded a file, and found it in
$HOME/snap/firefox/common/Downloads. This is deep enough in the
hierarchy as to be effectively hidden from both shell and GUI users. How
would I have known it'd be there? Why not just use $XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR?

A symlink could be a workaround, to get rid of the 4+ levels of folders
that effectively hide these files from view. If a workaround is
necessary, then there is a problem. If there is a problem, then it would
be inappropriate to consider the issue as a feature request.

XDG lets users have a clean $HOME, and to define what "clean" means.
Standards like XDG have community/industry support. They should be
respected, either by following, or by stating a clear reason to not
follow. How should this be done in XGD? Or what shortcoming of XDG is
being addressed?

Implementing snap as a feature of ubuntu is a rather aggressive way to
change the standard. It seems to lack clear direction, in breaking XDG.
It therefore appears to disrespect the community, for whom the standard
works. The feeling of disrespect can be seen motivating the various
tones of people posting to this bug report.

XDG effectively combines the data for all applications into one
structure. Does this make sense for something compartmentalized like
snap? At my distance (new snap user, linux user since kernel 1.x), the
new file structure doesn't seem inherently necessary, to have
compartmentalization. It seems that each compartmentalized app should be
able to use the XDG directories. Why not?

Is part of the compartmentalization approach to keep user data separate?
If so, how will the eventual need for users to break that separation be
handled securely? How do the $HOME/snap/ directories fit into
this?

Also, since epochs are mentioned in the rationale above, are they
conceptually-relevant to $HOME/snap? Or is that just a technical
dependency that we don't really need to understand, to know about
$HOME/snap?

It seems than the normal power mode under this OS disable core parking (C6)
I say it because i checked myself and core parking doesn't work by default
under w10.
So it could explain why it's not a windows thing.

Hi Antoine, i checked the manual of your Asrock motherboard quickly.
For your machine the "typical idle current" is named "c6 mode"
Disable it and you get the "typical idle current", i think.
While keeping the boost monothread.

2018-08-18 Thread chewi
To anyone applying the BIOS/CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU/ZenStates solution
together with the idle=nomwait solution, I believe this is unnecessary
as these are different problems relating to different CPUs. The former
worked for my Ryzen 5 1600X, while only the latter worked for my much
newer Ryzen 7 2700U (Raven Ridge). I've heard the idle=nomwait issue
applies to all Raven Ridge CPUs. I don't know if that's true but I'm
fairly certain it doesn't apply to any earlier hardware.

@Daniel what makes you think this bug is fixed? It certainly isn't for
me. I have a ASRock Fatal1ty X370 Gaming X motherboard, a Ryzen 7 1700
CPU, have updated the motherboard BIOS to its latest version (4.80 with
PinnaclePI-AM4_1.0.0.2 Patch A) and am still getting idle lockups with
kernel 4.15.0-32-generic (Ubuntu 18.04.1 kernel). The workaround for me
is to disable C6 states using the Zenstates.py script (which has the
unfortunate side effect of lowering the max CPU frequency in single-
threaded mode).

(I also don't see any "Typical Current Idle" option in my Setup options,
though I might have overlooked it)

[Bug 1690085]

2018-08-18 Thread kernel
The "freezing while idle" problem does appear to be (at least) worked
around by the "Typical Current Idle" option. If that counts as a fix,
then the bug is fixed -- or rather, was never a Kernel Bug.

The "Random Soft Lockup" -- the nominal subject of the bug -- on the
other hand... who can tell ?

It would be churlish not to be happy that my machine is now reliable and
I am a believer in credit where credit is due.

So, as you say, all credit goes to AMD for their total silence up to and
after the release of the work around (or fix) -- except for the advice
that some (older) power supplies might not work. I don't really need to
know why or how the new option does the trick, but I remain curious
whether it has a material effect on power consumption.

But I also give credit to this bug's assignee for their total silence --
in particular:

  * it's not clear whether the "freezing while idle" and "Random Soft Lockup"
problems are separate, related or the same.

  * hence, the CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU and rcu_nocbs=0-15 voodoo may or may
not still be recommended ?

For all I know, with the "Typical Current Idle" option, I may be better
off returning to the default configuration ?

  * and there is talk of kernel changes which reduce power consumption
(significantly ?) -- which may or may not be related to these issues.

Sadly, the absence of solid information allows half-truths and ill-
informed speculation to take its place and to live on in the undamped
echo chamber of the interweb :-( [I acknowledge my small part in that
noise :-(]

[Bug 1690085]

2018-08-18 Thread nelsoneci
Hello there. I read most of the thread a week ago.

My machine was freezing when idle and when not idle. I read most of this
thread and thanks to it got a stable setup.

@Daniel: When you say that you think the problem is fixed, do you know
what change/Linux version fixes the issue for most people?

-

Now my report.

I have the following setup:

Motherboard: AB350M-DS3H (F23d BIOS).
CPU: Ryzen 2700X.
No overclock.

I still wonder whether my CPU is doing too much extra work (I don't know
what cpufreq would report if a C6 state was reached).

cpufreq stats:

CPU 0: 3.70 GHz:6.64%, 3.20 GHz:1.15%, 2.20 GHz:92.21%
CPU15: 3.70 GHz:4.86%, 3.20 GHz:0.80%, 2.20 GHz:94.34%

Anyway, to make the things work I had to use three tweaks. I tried
individual tweaks to no avail.

- Select in BIOS: "Typical Current Idle"
- Start Linux with: idle=nomwait
- Disable C6 states (both core and package) with Zenstates.py

Before doing the last step Zenstates.py reports Core enabled and Package
disabled.

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.01 LTS. I didn't compile Linux with
CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU / CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU_ALL.

So, things are working for me. But if you think I should test a new
Linux version that is supposed to fix the issue please let me know.

arrival and launch my desired mail client (Though I've to admit setting it up
properly requires a bit pre-acquired knowledge and effort, so not new-user
friendly).
So, as I've already got this working mail
notifier+launcher(xfce4-mailwatch-plugin) on my panel, I don't need another big
confusing envelope icon from Mail Reader which is just a launcher for the
default mail client.

The Mail Reader (exo-open --launch MailReader %u) is an integral part of
the desktop environment and removing it also removes the whole desktop
and the file manager. It shows it's icon using xfce4-indicator-plugin
and there is an option to hide this(or any) icon in Indicator Plugin
settings. But when I select the hide option and reboot, the Mail Reader
icon disappears but a large space occupying, useless text "No indicator
icon" appears on the panel. Which actually hampers the main usefulness
of icon hiding feature. Please change this.

OS: Ubuntu 18.04
DE: Xfce 4.12(Xubuntu)
Related package: xfce4-indicator-plugin 2.3.4-0ubuntu1

Proposed fix: When user hides all icons from Indicator Plugin, no text
should appear on it's place on the panel.

[Bug 1684240] Re: Lagging square around mouse pointer

2018-08-18 Thread Witold Burkiewicz
Hello,
this is really annoying problem and apparently nobody cares except for the
people that experience it.
But I have found a better workaround that works at least for me:
In /etc/init/sddm.conf after line:
exec sddm
add:
killall sddm
exec sddm

Just restarting sddm automatically right after it strated. No more
logout/login manually.

[Bug 1772325] Re: Screen dims while a video is playing in VLC

Okay. I guess it is worth to check the power manager debug output then:

killall xfce4-power-manager; xfce4-power-manager --no-daemon --debug

Run this command, wait until the screen is dimmed and attach the
terminal output to this report.

[Bug 1787769] [NEW] lvconvert stripes N of lv type raid5 results in dead filesystem

2018-08-18 Thread Kundarsa
Public bug reported:

reproducible issue.
After creating a new LV --type raid5, mkfs.ext4 and rsync the backup the
filesystem will corrupt if i extend the lv using lvconvert --stripes N vg/lv. I
monitor the cpy%sync with lvs and reboot well after 100%, but the fs wont mount
and file -s /dev/dm-N says "data"

IMHO lvconvert --stripes N should refuse to run on --type raid5 until
resolved.

[Bug 1708804] Re: notify-osd appears over sound menu

2018-08-18 Thread Theo Linkspfeifer
I can confirm that this happens with indicator-sound and notify-osd (or
xfce4-notifyd), but not with xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin which does not send
a notification when using its menu slider.

Is indicator-sound even supposed to show a notification in this case?
