[Bug 520546] Re: Alt-f2 switches to virtual terminal 2

2018-09-19 Thread Erno Kuusela
This is definitely a new regression for me in 18.04, I didn't suffer from it
before. Judging by the large numbers of new comments from 18.04 users, this is
likely the case for others as well.
Is there some way to signal this in the bug flags/metadata?

(I tried to report a new 18.04 specific bug but it was marked a
duplicate to this 2015 bug)

[Bug 1751421] Re: software updater causes mouse buttons to stop working

2018-09-19 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I just restarted after Software Updater told me and now the buttons do NOT work.
But then I had a brainwave and started Terminal and exited straight away.
And, lo and behold, the buttons are working again!

[Bug 1793430] [NEW] Page leaking in cachefiles_read_backing_file while vmscan is active

2018-09-19 Thread Daniel Axtens
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification
-

[Description]
In a heavily loaded system where the system pagecache is nearing memory limits
and fscache is enabled, pages can be leaked by fscache while trying read pages
from cachefiles backend. This can happen because two applications can be
reading same page from a single mount, two threads can be trying to read the
backing page at same time. This results in one of the thread finding that a
page for the backing file or netfs file is already in the radix tree. During
the error handling cachefiles does not cleanup the reference on backing page,
leading to page leak.

[Fix]
The fix is straightforward, to decrement the reference when error is encounterd.

[Testing]
A user has tested the fix using following method for 12+ hrs.

1) mkdir -p /mnt/nfs ; mount -o vers=3,fsc :/export /mnt/nfs
2) create 1 files of 2.8MB in a NFS mount.
3) start a thread to simulate heavy VM presssure
   (while true ; do echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches ; sleep 1 ; done)&
4) start multiple parallel reader for data set at same time
   find /mnt/nfs -type f | xargs -P 80 cat > /dev/null &
   find /mnt/nfs -type f | xargs -P 80 cat > /dev/null &
   find /mnt/nfs -type f | xargs -P 80 cat > /dev/null &
   ..
   ..
   find /mnt/nfs -type f | xargs -P 80 cat > /dev/null &
   find /mnt/nfs -type f | xargs -P 80 cat > /dev/null &
5) finally check using cat /proc/fs/fscache/stats | grep -i pages ;
   free -h , cat /proc/meminfo and page-types -r -b lru
   to ensure all pages are freed.

[Regression Potential]
Limited to cachefiles.

[Bug 1793427] [NEW] network-manager-fortisslvpn breaks mode of /run/systemd/resolv/stub-resolv.conf

2018-09-19 Thread Paul Smith
Public bug reported:

(I'm not able to use ubuntu-bug as it fails with a 503 error trying to
connect to the crash server)

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.1 on 64bit Intel with:

network-manager1.10.6-2ubuntu1
network-manager-fortisslvpn1.2.8-1build1
network-manager-fortisslvpn-gnome  1.2.8-1build1
network-manager-gnome  1.8.10-2ubuntu1

systemd237-3ubuntu10.3

When I connect then disconnect from my VPN using the network-manager-
fortisslvpn VPN interface, it will break the permissions on
/run/systemd/resolv/stub-resolv.conf such that I can't use DNS anymore
until I fix the permissions.

On my system I see:

$ ls -al /etc/resolv.conf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 Oct 22  2017 /etc/resolv.conf ->
../run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf

When there's no VPN connection, I see:

$ ls -al /run/systemd/resolve/
total 8
drwxr-xr-x  3 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve 100 Sep 19 23:05 ./
drwxr-xr-x 21 rootroot480 Sep 15 14:19 ../
drwx--  2 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve  60 Sep 19 23:05 netif/
-rw-r--r--  1 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve 714 Sep 19 23:05 resolv.conf
-rw-r--r--  1 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve 783 Sep 19 19:31 stub-resolv.conf

Now I start the fortisslvpn VPN:

$ ls -al /run/systemd/resolve/
total 16
drwxr-xr-x  3 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve 140 Sep 19 23:06 ./
drwxr-xr-x 21 rootroot480 Sep 15 14:19 ../
drwx--  2 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve  80 Sep 19 23:06 netif/
-rw-r--r--  1 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve 714 Sep 19 23:06 resolv.conf
-rw-r--r--  1 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve 783 Sep 19 23:06 stub-resolv.conf
-rw---  1 rootroot783 Sep 19 19:31
stub-resolv.conf.pppd-backup.ppp0
-rw-r--r--  1 rootroot805 Sep 19 23:06
stub-resolv.conf.tmp

Note how the stub-resolv.conf.pppd-backup-ppp0 has 0600 file
permissions.

Now I stop the fortisslvpn VPN:

$ ls -al /run/systemd/resolve/
total 12
drwxr-xr-x  3 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve 120 Sep 19 23:06 ./
drwxr-xr-x 21 rootroot480 Sep 15 14:19 ../
drwx--  2 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve  60 Sep 19 23:06 netif/
-rw-r--r--  1 systemd-resolve systemd-resolve 714 Sep 19 23:06 resolv.conf
-rw---  1 rootroot783 Sep 19 19:31 stub-resolv.conf
-rw-r--r--  1 rootroot805 Sep 19 23:06
stub-resolv.conf.tmp

Now the stub-resolv.conf file hs 0600 permissions and my DNS is broken.

Hi Canonical,

I tested the latest kernel 4.15.0-35 and 4.15.0-34 for comparison and both got
similar results with a full stress-ng test by stress-ng in the GUEST and the
HOST running the 4.15.0-35 kernel.
eg. command for stress:
$ stress-ng --all $(nproc)  --vm-bytes 80%  --aggressive --maximize --oomable
--timeout 300 --verify --syslog --metrics --times

Ok ... this bug did *not* exist in KDE 3.4.3 ... someone must have
broken something in the new 1.2 ;)

What happened:
1. Switch to normal view and choose any feed, preferably a feed with a long
list.

2. Try to scroll through the articles with left/right keys and occassionally:
 a) the left/right key will get stuck/not jump to the next/prev article
 b) it jumps to a random article (i.e. not in order shown in the list)

3. Duplicated articles are shown twice at least

4. If you click on an unread title, another title in the list
(unrelated) will change its name to the article you just clicked. The
article that has its name changed is lost afterwards.

I do not have full source in hand, but I suspect some of the ?new
duplication detection mechanism was not working the way it should be.

Cheers,

Frank

It's not about dupe detection, it has to do with the list items (which are
created per article). Thus, when switching to another feed and back, the items
are cleared and recreated properly.

That is correct.

Thanks -- sounds very logical. The reason I suspected "dupe detection"
originally was that it only happens with new (red) and unread (blue) items. The
read items (black) items does not seem to be affected.

Yes. That is also correct.

The fact that the Dash is visible on the desktop ~immediately after~ a
touch event seems to be contributing to the problem.

However, point taken about creating a new file. I've done that and is

For anyone coming from google, the temp solution on Ubuntu 18.04 is:

# echo dash > /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/guestfs/supermin.d/zz-lp-1793056

(Just remember to clean up zz-lp-1793056 once the problem is fixed in future

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2018-09-19 Thread PJSingh5000
Reading through the bug report linked by Daniel van Vugt (vanvugt) in
comment #24 (https://github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock/issues/128), I
noticed that Dash-to-Dock is only affected.

I had uninstalled the Ubuntu Dock...
$ sudo apt autoremove --purge gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock

However, I was using the Dash-to-Dock extension, instead.
$ sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock

So, I disabled Dash-to-Dock.
Now the problem is gone.

Are all of you using either Dash-to-Dock or the Ubuntu-Dock?
If so, what happens when you disable or remove it?

[Bug 1725384] Re: On touch screens, the apps icon in the dock does not open when touched

2018-09-19 Thread PJSingh5000
This bug seems to only affect Xorg. Wayland is not affected (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-
dock/+bug/1725384/comments/18).

Since Xorg is not a priority, I suspect this bug is not getting attention.
Unfortunately, many of us have to use Xorg (if you have Nvidia hardware, for
example).

Initially, I thought that perhaps Gnome is generating multiple touch
events, causing the apps overview to open, and then close again (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-
dock/+bug/1725384/comments/10).

However, this could be an issue in Gnome Shell, Gnome Dash, Xorg,
specific hardware, or something else entirely.

Let's see if we can narrow it down or find some kind of pattern, or
clue, to what is going wrong.

Doing this may help provide the developers with enough information to
spot the cause and fix this bug.

It would really useful for all of us to list the hard ware we have...

Please share the output of:

(1)
$ sudo dmidecode | grep -A9 "System Information"

(2)
$ sudo lshw -short

(3)
$ lspci

(4) Is the multi-touch module loaded (most likely for all of us)...
$ lsmod | grep multi

(5) Multi-touch module version number...
$ modinfo hid_multitouch | grep version

[Bug 1751421] Re: software updater causes mouse buttons to stop working

2018-09-19 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
I started the computer after having been away for a week and started BOINC to
resume processing, but I could not use the mouse to select the process.
I then noticed that software updater was loaded so I reckon that software
updater was the culprit.
But ...
I decided to first log a bug against BOINC (using ~$ ubuntu-bug -w), because
BOINC does not allow selection of a process via the keyboard.
And ...
During the process of entering bug information on Launchpad (using Firefox) I
noticed that I could use the mouse again.
So there.

[Bug 1793413] [NEW] can't upgrade to 18.04

2018-09-19 Thread Harrison Gott
Public bug reported:

Could not calculate the upgrade.

Doesn't tell me what the problem is. I have unchecked all other software
in "Software and Updates."

Expected system to upgrade, or at least give me an error for what is
wrong. Instead, I get a message saying that something could be wrong,
with no pointers to where the error is.

[Bug 1793410] [NEW] [Acer Swift SF315-52, Realtek ALC256, Mic, Internal] Internal microphone not working

2018-09-19 Thread James Pollock
Public bug reported:

Recently bought a new Acer Swift 3 laptop and installed Ubuntu 18.04 on
it. Everything works except the internal microphone. I have also tested
with an external microphone and this didn't work either.

I have worked my way through all the suggested solutions I could find,
including trying to reconfigure the pins using hdajacketask. In
pavucontrol I have options for Internal Microphone and Microphone
(unplugged) but the internal mic only captures static noise.

The latest HD-Audio Codec-Specific Models has configurations for
alc255-acer and alc256 for some other models, but setting options snd-
hda-intel model=MODEL in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf does not solve
the issue with any of these.
