[Bug 1793901] Re: kernel oops in bcache module

2018-09-26 Thread step21
My system has changed somewhat, as I moved my root / to bcache with a kernel
that worked.
Still, I installed the mainline build, and the oops did not occur so far.
However I also cannot run that kernel properly as it does not seem to work well
with Nvidia graphics. (very low resolution and probably wrong driver)
However I am not sure that ensures that the problem is fixed, as when I
rebooted with the kernel where the problem did occur, it also did not occur
anymore (or at least it didn't say) but as stated above, the setup is not the
same as the bcache device is now /. I made a separate, similar bcache device
(in the same devices, with the same settings), but there the problem also
didn't occur so far. The only thing I couldn't didn't replicate (apart from the
partitions being at different places) was that when the error occured, at first
the caching device didn't seem to be properly registered, but when adding it
manually it said it was. Finally after running partprobe and/or rebooting this
was remedied. When now recreating a fresh bcache device, there were no issues
with registering/recognizing, and I am not sure how to replicate this.

[Bug 1792438] Re: [Ubuntu 18.10] Need to enable TM in pseries-cosmic

2018-09-26 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
@bssrikanth - the default state is part of the qemu machine type and
therefore version dependent.

Later qemu versions might switch the value, but only for newer machine types.
So if you start with -M "pseries-bionic" it will stay the same definition
hopefully forever.
And libvirt will set the default machine type queried from qemu when created,
that machine type stays for the lifecycle of the machine.

A machine for the migration receive at the target is spawned the same
way as the source - so these values should always match.

[Bug 183456] Re: Trying to load a sf2 file with asfxload returns "sfxload: no memory left"

2018-09-26 Thread Thomas Richter
Look, what else to say? The patch is there, it has been confirmed to
work, and it still works here. See #10 on this list.

If the Ubuntu team does not want to pick it up, nor the kernel team
wants to pick it up, nothing will happen. If anyone is having a better
fix, also go along. Until then, see #10.

Thanks for the answer. I've got the same warning since I disabled secure

registered (more in the older 'buggy' kernel than in the newer one). It is
probably still possible to undelete the previous partition or recreate it where
the problem did occur, but it takes some work and time to do that.

[Bug 1794639] Re: plymouth-theme for lubuntu 18.10 shows try lubuntu/ install lubuntu while amd 64 shows start lubuntu

2018-09-26 Thread Chris Guiver
I get on the Lubuntu 18.10 (x86 32bit) daily image
- real hardware; both 32bit only laptop & x86_64 desktop
- virtual machine (host lubuntu 18.10, virtual box, linux BOTH 32bit & 64bit)
after selecting english, menu options are :-
---
Try Lubuntu without installing
Install Lubuntu
Check disk for defects
Test memory
Boot from first hard disk
---

note: I've not booted x86_64 ISO, so it looks normal to me.

[Bug 1794641] [NEW] Slow boot caused by unresponsive internal sd card reader

2018-09-26 Thread recovered buzzy via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 18.04 / Mac OS High Sierra Dual Boot on Macbook Pro 11,1.
I've had a long standing kernel problem, that is still present for
Ubuntu's linux-generic 4.15.0-34 kernel.

Since roughly December the system has two kinds of boots: good and bad.
I had been running 16.04 until a few days ago. I was hoping an 18.04
update would get rid of this problem. The problem remains, both with the
canonical's 4.15 generic kernel and the 4.19 rc4 kernel. I even updated
Mac OS to High Sierra in hopes that would update any potential firmware
updates might resolve the issue.

No dice. Hope this bug report can get the ball rolling.

The Boots--
Good Boot:
5 seconds from power on chime to refind bootmanager, 5 seconds to kernel space,
10-15 userspace.
Bad Boot:
it takes about 20-30 to get to my boot manager after I select the kernel to
use, it takes roughly 50 seconds, most of that time is spent with the kernel
trying to assign an address to usb 2-3: my computer's SD Card Reader. Something
prevents it from doing so and it gives up after trying all 4 usb ports twice.
(Eats 40 seconds).

On a Good Boot the SD Card Reader works just fine. On a Bad Boot it is
completely nonfunctional.

When are Good Boot and Bad Boots?-
Cold Reboots are always Bad.
After a Bad Boot, a warm reboot is always Good.
A warm reboot after a Good boot is always Bad.

I've compared the dmesg logs between the different boots and they are
quite different. Something in the shutdown/reboot process is really
altering how the kernel behaves. Since the slowdown starts before the
boot manager I've been suspicious of the EFI. Checking EFI variables
between these two boots shows an EFI variable is present after a good
boot that is not present after a bad boot: usb-cr-rec-7c436110-ab2a-
4bbb-a880-fe41995c9f82. This appears to be a Mac specific setting. I
don't know what it does, but I can confirm that speeds up the boot
process when present, regardless of which operating system I boot.

I'm aware this might be an EFI issue that I might have to talk to Apple
about. However, Apple's kernel seems to handle the SD card reader
gracefully, rather than leave a 40 unresponsive blank screen whilst
booting.

I have attached the slow boot dmesg logs for Canonical's 4.15.0-34
kernel. The big gaps of kernel time are generally accompanied by lines
like

usb 2-3: device not accepting address 4, error -62.

I'd like to attach files for for current 4.15 Ubuntu and 4.19 Mainline fast and
slow boots, but there
only seems to be one attachment allowed.

[Bug 1794639] [NEW] plymouth-theme for lubuntu 18.10 shows try lubuntu/ install lubuntu while amd 64 shows start lubuntu

2018-09-26 Thread Lyn Perrine
Public bug reported:

To reproduce boot the i386 version of lubuntu boot it and press enter
after the language for english and instead of start lubuntu like it says
for amd64 it says try lubuntu / install lubuntu as two seperate entries
when I thought migrating to start lubuntu as it starts the live session
no matter what and then click on an icon for calamares to install.
Instead we can get try without installing or install and both go to live
session.

[Bug 1794638] [NEW] gdm crashes immediately after login

2018-09-26 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Immediately after I login on Ubuntu 18.10 into gnome-shell, gdm
disappears even though gnome-shell is fine: if I try switching to tty1
with CTRL-ALT F1, I just see a list of bootup messages (like 'Starting
Fingerpint Authentication Daemon').

loginctl shows only one session:

$ loginctl
SESSION UID USER SEAT TTY
  2 1001 rocko seat0 tty2

1 sessions listed.

There's no crash file in /var/crash, and no useful information in gdm3's
status:

$ systemctl status gdm3
● gdm.service - GNOME Display Manager
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/gdm.service; static; vendor preset:
enabled)
  Drop-In: /lib/systemd/system/display-manager.service.d
   └─xdiagnose.conf
Active: active (running) since Thu 2018-09-27 09:33:45 AWST; 4min 46s ago
  Process: 1356 ExecStartPre=/usr/share/gdm/generate-config (code=exited,
status=0/SUCCESS)
 Main PID: 1364 (gdm3)
Tasks: 3 (limit: 4915)
   Memory: 9.0M
   CGroup: /system.slice/gdm.service
   └─1364 /usr/sbin/gdm3

Warning: Journal has been rotated since unit was started. Log output is
incomplete or unavailable.

If I try switching to another user via the gnome-shell menu, gdm3 gets
restarted and I get the login screen again on tty1. However, if gnome-shell
crashes (eg when it freezes), I can't easily restart gdm3, so it's a nuisance.

Previously, the gdm3 login screen was always available on tty1 so it was
easy to switch to backup user if the first user's session crashed.

Re: [Bug 1748543] Re: intel-microcode when installed on an i7-6850k based system running Artful breaks overclock

2018-09-26 Thread Robert Dinse
I am an overclocker with i7-6850k, specifically I have it on an Asus
board with all six cores running at 4.3 Ghz and reliably at that. How do I
obtain this particular micorocode to test? The last one caused the CPU to
run at 3.6 Ghz with microcode installed so it is running without microcode
form Linux and just what Asus supplies.

Asus says this motherboard with i7-6850k is not susceptible to meltdown
and spectre but script says it is susceptible to the 2nd variant of meltdown.

I am not sure. We need an overclocker with an i7-6850K to test it and
be explicit about it, since this bug report has "Artful" in the title.

[Bug 1794067] Re: Bug in selinux on ubuntu 16.04 with kernel 4.15.0-34

2018-09-26 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I built a test kernel with a revert of commit 36788bfe15f16b2eba. The test
kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1794067

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

Note about installing test kernels:
• If the test kernel is prior to 4.15(Bionic) you need to install the
linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
• If the test kernel is 4.15(Bionic) or newer, you need to install the
linux-modules, linux-modules-extra and linux-image-unsigned .deb packages.

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1742743] Re: [MIR] woff2

2018-09-26 Thread Chris Coulson
I reviewed woff2 1.0.2-1 as checked in to cosmic. This isn't a full
security audit, but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.

- woff2 is a library for decompressing WOFF2 font files to TTF, and is an
implementation of the W3C spec (https://www.w3.org/TR/WOFF2/).
- No CVEs in our database.
- Build-Depends: cmake, debhelper, libbrotli-dev, pkg-config
- It is designed to process untrusted data from the web.

- Contains several binaries in PATH: woff2_info, woff2_compress,
woff2_decompress

- Doesn't spawn any subprocesses.
- Uses a mixture of operator new[] and std::vector for allocating write buffers.
- Uses a convenience class (woff2::Buffer) for reading from memory buffers,
designed to protect against out-of-bounds errors.
- Makes use of std::unique_ptr
- Doesn't open any files.
- Some logging via printf and fprintf.
- No environment variable use.
- No privileged code.
- No networking.
- No cryptography.
- No sql.
- Doesn't use temporary files.
- No webkit.

- Some cppcheck errors. The first 2 look bogus, and the remaining ones in
woff2_enc.cc are struct members that are unused:
[src/font.cc:88]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.flavor
[src/font.cc:88]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.num_tables
[src/woff2_enc.cc:349]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.checksum
[src/woff2_enc.cc:349]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.offset
[src/woff2_enc.cc:349]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.length
[src/woff2_enc.cc:349]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.data
[src/woff2_enc.cc:349]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.reuse_of
[src/woff2_enc.cc:349]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.flag_byte
[src/woff2_enc.cc:349]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.src_offset
[src/woff2_enc.cc:349]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.dst_offset
[src/woff2_enc.cc:349]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.dst_length
[src/woff2_enc.cc:349]: (error) Uninitialized struct member: table.dst_data

- Build logs are mostly clean, but there is a compiler warning on 32-bit
architectures:
/<>/src/woff2_dec.cc: In function ‘bool
woff2::{anonymous}::ReadWOFF2Header(const uint8_t*, size_t,
woff2::{anonymous}::WOFF2Header*)’:
/<>/src/woff2_dec.cc:1184:37: warning: format ‘%lu’ expects
argument of type ‘long unsigned int’, but argument 4 has type ‘size_t {aka
unsigned int}’ [-Wformat=]
   src_offset, length, dst_offset);
 ^

The format identifier here should probably be %zu.

- No init scripts or systemd unit files.
- No dbus services.
- No setuid binaries.
- Doesn't call any privileged commands.
- No sudo fragments.
- No udev rules
- No cronjobs.

- There doesn't appear to be any standalone tests in the woff2
repository. woff2 support in Chrome (using the same library) has its own
tests, but that's no use here.

woff2 is fairly small and well maintained upstream. As expected for
something that processes untrusted data, it is programmed defensively
against invalid input. It is already embedded inside Firefox and Chrome,
and shouldn't be a maintenance burden.

Security team ACK for promoting woff2 to main.

[Bug 1782445] Re: xfce4-terminal doesn't search icons in XDG_DATA_DIRS

2018-09-26 Thread Sean Davis
Yes, this sounds correct. Icons are loaded from themes, not from just
the icons directories. You can either place them in the hicolor theme or
the one you are using.

With 18.04 UEFI on x86, does passing the kernel parameter
"video=efifb:off" make a difference?

[Bug 1793753] Re: kernel panic - null pointer dereference on ipset operations

2018-09-26 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I built a Xenial test kernel with commit
596cf3fe5854fe2b1703b0466ed6bf9cfb83c91e. The test kernel can be downloaded
from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1793753

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

If you are unable to test, could you provide the commands that you found
to reproduce this bug?

Note, for the test kernel, you need to install both the linux-image and
linux-image-extra .deb packages.

[Bug 1793219] Re: open-vm-tools guest stats overflow

2018-09-26 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
But TBH the commit states that the values would be 32bit even on 64bit kernels.
https://github.com/vmware/open-vm-tools/commit/c7a186e204cdff46b5e02bcb5208ef8979eaf261

I haven't checked if that is true, the fix is valid no matter what.
We only would like the extra testability for the SRU process.

i386 is available up to the latest release, just no Desktop ISO images to
slowly fade it out.
You can and should be able to test it with a Bionic/Cosmic.

To be able to follow your usual deployment path with an ISO you can as
well use a Xenial 32bit ISO and "do-release-upgrade" to Bionic from
there.

[Bug 1794620] [NEW] mvn 3.5.2 deadlock during dependency resolution

2018-09-26 Thread Tudor Bosman
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04 ships with Maven 3.5.2, which has a serious known deadlock
during dependency resolution, see
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/43792427/maven-hangs-for-20-mins-
during-the-project-build-used-to-work-fine

The deadlock is fixed in 3.5.3, see https://maven.apache.org/docs/3.5.3
/release-notes.html

The latest release is 3.5.4, released in June 2018.

Can you please upgrade the version of Maven in Bionic Beaver?

Thank you!
