[Bug 1788387] Re: After upgrading from 4.4.0 to 4.15.0 system doesn't boot - ACPI issue

2018-10-13 Thread zunda
I have seemingly similar problem on Intel NUC DE3815TYKHE (ntel Atom CPU
E3815). On 4.15.*, it takes more than 5 minutes to unpack the initramfs
(below is an example on 4.15.0-36). With the acpi=noirq, the kernel
boots as usual.

$ dmesg | head -2; dmesg | grep -A1 initramfs

[Bug 1797737] [NEW] Consider installing cpdb-backend-gcp by default

2018-10-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

cpdb-backend-gcp is an interesting hidden package.

If it is installed and if you have logged in to Google in Settings >
Online Accounts, it will add "Save to Google Drive" as an option in the
standard print dialog. I think if you have printers hooked up to Google
Cloud Print, it will offer those there too.

If you aren't logged in to Google, the print dialog won't tell you about
this feature. :(

There is an almost complete MIR for this feature in LP: #1747759 but it
looks like it won't make it into Ubuntu 18.10.

I believe tou would need a FFe to get it in Ubuntu Budgie 18.10.

[Bug 1762192] Re: Ubuntu Welcome could offer to set up Online Accounts

2018-10-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Matthew, I think you have a good point about apps offering (at first
launch?) online account integration instead of expecting users to use
the initial login experience or Settings > Online Accounts.

I filed https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/issues/629 for Nautilus
(marked a duplicate of a bigger design bug).

Someone should probably file bugs for Calendar and To Do.

I think the Software app already asks for Ubuntu log in when it needs it
to install an app. Backups (Deja Dup) looks good to me too.

I think that's it for the default 18.10 install (except for LivePatch
which is only in LTS releases and gets its own page in Welcome to
Ubuntu).

For bonus points, the other GOA apps are Bijiben (GNOME Notes),
Contacts, Documents, Evolution, Feedreader, Maps, Music, Photos, and
Recipes. I think Recipes does well in its Export Ingredients step.
Evolution, Maps, and Photos don't do very well.

(And a really hidden one: cpdb-backend-gcp which allows "printing" to
Google Drive from the standard Ubuntu print dialog. But if you aren't
logged in to Google in GOA, the print dialog doesn't advertise the
feature at all. The almost complete MIR is LP: #1747762)

I encourage you to discuss this concern with the GNOME Design team.
Generally, I think they prefer using #gnome-design on GNOME IRC.

There is a GitLab now which might work too:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/groups/Teams/Design/-/issues

I am removing Facebook from the Welcome to Ubuntu list of online
accounts. LP: #1797736

Finally, people don't really read closed Launchpad bugs so you'll need
to open new bugs if you want to pursue this further.

[Bug 1797736] Re: Don't offer Facebook online account integration

2018-10-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  Impact
  ==
Ubuntu does not install any apps by default that would use Facebook account
in GOA.

The supported apps are GNOME Photos and GNOME Maps.

Therefore, we shouldn't offer Facebook in the Online Accounts page of
  the Welcome to Ubuntu wizard.

The Online Accounts page isn't used in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS but it is used
  in Ubuntu 18.10

  Test Case
  =
Install Ubuntu. After restarting your computer, the Welcome to Ubuntu wizard
should launch. On the Online Accounts page, there should be Ubuntu Single
Sign-On, Google, Nextcloud, and Microsoft. Facebook should not be present.

+ Or you can use a shortcut to avoid needing to re-install Ubuntu. Just
+ remove the empty ~/.config/gnome-initial-setup-done file to restart the
+ wizard.
+
  Regression Potential

  None.

Users can still sign in to Facebook from the Online Accounts page in the
  Settings app.

GNOME doesn't show all the account types by default in gnome-initial-
  setup.
+
+ This will only affect the Ubuntu sessions. Any one who logs in for the
+ first time in the vanilla GNOME sessions will still have this option and
+ will generally get the upstream GNOME experience rather than the Welcome
+ to Ubuntu experience.

  Other Info
  ==
The Welcome to Ubuntu wizard generally would only show up on first login
(because the user should complete the wizard or close the wizard).

Many Ubuntu desktop installs only have one user.

Therefore, this won't be very beneficial as an SRU; it should be fixed

[Bug 1797735] [NEW] Use Ubuntu-specific Google API keys

2018-10-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Test Case
=
In the "Welcome to Ubuntu" wizard in Ubuntu 18.10, on the Online Accounts
Screen, click Google.
The dialog currently reads "Sign in to continue to GNOME"
After authenticating, it says "GNOME wants to access your Google account"

(Because it's a web page, Google can change the exact wording at any
time.)

Suggestion
==
Canonical should consider using its own Google API keys. I suggest using
different keys at least for each LTS release.

Benefits

These API keys have usage limits. Ubuntu is a substantial part of GNOME's usage
and it makes sense to spread out the load more.

Occasionally, there is a need to replace keys. If Canonical already has
a system for these keys, it might be able to replace these keys faster.
An example of when it was needed was with Evolution 3.20 which had a bug
(sort of a DDoS) that led to Google throttling all users of that API
key.

Other Info
==
Both GOA and EDS have Google keys and Canonical should probably use separate
keys for each. (Users of the Evolution app can choose to use GNOME Online
Accounts or authenticate directly in Evolution without using GOA.)

  time.)

  Suggestion
  ==
Canonical should consider using its own Google API keys. I suggest using
different keys at least for each LTS release.

  Benefits

These API keys have usage limits. Ubuntu is a substantial part of GNOME's
usage and it makes sense to spread out the load more.

Occasionally, there is a need to replace keys. If Canonical already has
a system for these keys, it might be able to replace these keys faster.
An example of when it was needed was with Evolution 3.20 which had a bug
(sort of a DDoS) that led to Google throttling all users of that API
  key.

  Other Info
  ==
Both GOA and EDS have Google keys and Canonical should probably use separate
keys for each. (Users of the Evolution app can choose to use GNOME Online
Accounts or authenticate directly in Evolution without using GOA.)

[Bug 1797727] Re: ncurses in cosmic breaks many Mono apps

2018-10-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I've identified the fix, but I can't get mono to build on Ubuntu 18.10.

To get the work I've done so far, take git master from
https://salsa.debian.org/dotnet-team/mono
and apply this merge request:

** Changed in: mono (Ubuntu)

apps aren't as popular or as well-maintained as they used to be, this is still
bad.

  Test Case

  Install the updated mono packages.
  Install pdfmod.
  From gnome-terminal, run
  $ pdfmod
  The app should start.

  Regression Potential
  ---
This is a cherry-picked commit (from a newer mono version) that was applied
in Debian in May.

  Other Info
  --
I noticed this while working on pdfmod for LP: #1771025 . The only app listed
there that runs before this fix in cosmic is bareftp.

See the Debian and upstream bugs for more info.

  I believe Ubuntu's default bashrc sets xterm-256color but Debian's
  doesn't.

[Bug 1768961] Re: xdg user-dirs not being read/stored correctly for desktop icon in left panel

2018-10-13 Thread Scott Cowles Jacobs
I am currently out of town (and before then was busy trying to find a new used
car to replace one damaged in an accident) or I would have installed the beta
version of L 18.10 to test if the problem has since gone away. I probably will
not be able to test it before the final version is released, but will do so
then, and will also show my partitioning scheme (I'm sure there is a terminal
command to do that, but don't know it offhand...), and my fstab file contents.
Should you have any command you would like me to run at that time, let me know,
please.

Thank you for continuing to pursue this, and I am as mystified as you
that you cannot reproduce the issue.

[Bug 1771025] Re: Please remove gnome-sharp2 from Ubuntu

2018-10-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
To be more precise, those apps run as long as you don't do it from a
terminal!

Or if you do run from a terminal, try something like:
$ TERM= pdfmod

I filed LP: #1797727 for that issue. That fix is blocked on figuring out
how to get mono to build again.

Anyway, pdfmod is good as I have an NMU to drop its gnome-sharp2
dependency. I can upload to cosmic now if an AA wants to remove gnome-
sharp2.

[Bug 1797730] [NEW] Second try fails to prompt for authentication if first was canecelled

2018-10-13 Thread Gordon Lack
Public bug reported:

Start plasma-discover because there are pending updates.
Click on "Update all".
When the authentication box pops up Cancel it (I've decided I now want to look

[Bug 1797727] Re: ncurses in cosmic breaks many Mono apps

2018-10-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  Impact
  --
Many mono apps don't run in cosmic when run from a terminal. Although mono
apps aren't as popular or as well-maintained as they used to be, this is still
bad.

  Test Case
  -
- Install the updated ncurses packages. You may need to log out and log back in
(or reboot).
+ Install the updated mono packages.
  Install pdfmod.
  From gnome-terminal, run
  $ pdfmod
  The app should start.

  Regression Potential
  ---
-
+ This is a cherry-picked commit (from a newer mono version) that was applied
in Debian in May.

  Other Info
  --
I noticed this while working on pdfmod for LP: #1771025 . The only app listed
there that runs before this fix in cosmic is bareftp.
+
+ See the Debian and upstream bugs for more info.
+
+ I believe Ubuntu's default bashrc sets xterm-256color but Debian's
+ doesn't.

[Bug 1779829] Re: nvidia-340 340.104-0ubuntu0.16.04.1: nvidia-340 kernel module failed to build [error: implicit declaration of function ‘init_timer’]

2018-10-13 Thread JOHN LLEWELYN
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1737750 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1737750

I had the same problem, install the drivers with the command:
sudo drivers autoinstall
sudo reboot
then when you start it remains on the black screen.

I have a nvidia video card Geforce GT-9500 ZOTAC
The nvidia-340 package was installed but apparently does not work.

Solution:
Enter via SSH from another device and uninstall the nvidia drivers:
sudo apt purge nvidia *
sudo reboot

Then they can access normally.

[Bug 1797690] Re: package fonts-wine (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/wine/fonts/coue1255.fon', which is also in package wine1.7 1:1.7.55-0ubuntu1

2018-10-13 Thread jre
Please uninstall wine1.7 and similar packages like wine1.7-amd64 and
wine1.7-i386. This should fix your issues.

These packages were never part of the Ubuntu archives, and the Wine
packaging doesn't handle conflicts with 3rd-party repositories.

I assume you had them installed once from the “Ubuntu Wine Team”-ppa,
which is deprecated anyway. So you should also remove this PPA from your
apt sources.list.

[Bug 1771025] Re: Please remove gnome-sharp2 from Ubuntu

2018-10-13 Thread Jeremy Bicha
The only one of these apps that even *runs* for me in cosmic is bareftp.
For the others, I get crashes like this:

(pdfmod at least runs in Debian Testing and I have an NMU in progress to
drop the gnome-sharp2 dependency but it still won't run in cosmic.)

$ pdfmod
