[Bug 1794055] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2018-12-05 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From mranw...@us.ibm.com 2018-12-06 02:22 EDT---
I recreated the problem where I could see the errors in dmesg (and the console)
and then added the firmware to /lib/firmware/nvidia/gx100. After that:
mranweil@ltc-wspoon5:~$ dmesg|grep -i nouv
[6.632529] nouveau 0004:04:00.0: enabling device (0140 -> 0142)

mranweil@ltc-wspoon5:~$

So looks like the firmware from the current git tree addresses the error
messages. I didn't do anything further with the driver.

We find extensions cause a lot of bugs so it's a good first step to

[Bug 1806472] Re: RTL8822BE WiFi Disabled in Kernel 4.18.0-12

2018-12-05 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
** Description changed:

+ ===SRU Justification===
+ [Impact]
+ Realtek 8822be doesn't work under kernel lockdown.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Add r8822be.ko to signature-inclusion, so it can be signed and be loaded
+ when lockdown is enabled.
+
+ [Test]
+ Since I can't signed the kernel so it's not tested.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Low. The driver is maintained by a Realtek guy, so bugs are actually
+ getting fixed.
+
+ ===Original Bug Report===
Received kernel patch 4.18.0-12 today on my machine. On reboot my WiFi
appears to be unavailable.
lspci still recognises the installed RTL8822BE card and a reboot back to the
previous kernel version (4.18.0-11) seems to resolve the problem.

We tried some debugging in the IRC channel and didn't get very far. The
r8822be module alias is intact, trying to modprobe it or insert results
in a "operation not permitted" error. Modprobing mac80211 and cfg80211
which r8822be depends on did not seem to help.

This did happen before (with 18.04) and may be completely unrelated -
it's just the normal consequence of running a graphics-intensive
application. But it also may be the actual trigger... So the problem may
be somewhere between Gnome, kernel and nvidia-driver...

[Bug 1807096] [NEW] gnome-shell uses 100% cpu, triggered by games while using nvidia-driver

2018-12-05 Thread Michal Kukuča
Public bug reported:

There's not much I can provide in terms of hard data, but maybe someone
can help with getting to the bottom of this. After installing Ubuntu
18.10, I'm unable to use graphics-intensive games.

My setup:
ASUS F556U, with Intel® Core™ i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz × 4, Intel® HD Graphics
620 (Kaby Lake GT2) + NVIDIA GeForce 940MX.

While the Nvidia card is being used (Performance mode set in nvidia-
settings) and I run a 3d game with Steam (happens e.g. with Black Mesa,
Euro Truck Simulator 2...), everything works as expected, but after a
relatively short amount of time gnome-shell starts eating up more and
more CPU for some reason, effectively taking over the actual game. The
game starts to stutter first, then slowly grinds to a completely
unresponsive state. If I manage to quit the game, gnome-shell still does
its thing. I'm sometimes even unable to enter the overview mode in
Gnome. The only solution is to reboot.

This does happen with nvidia-driver-390 from the standard repo, but also
with nvidia-driver-410 from the graphics PPA. This was not the issue
with Ubuntu 18.04. It also does not happen with nouveau, or with the
Intel drivers (power saving mode in nvidia-settings). There's also
nothing of note in the syslog.

[Bug 1573345] Re: Dual monitor loses settings after screen sleep

2018-12-05 Thread Jeff.m
I have this problem. Everything works great with my two monitor setup
until my screen blanker comes on. After I wake the system (which my
secondary monitor seems to wake up a couple of seconds faster) when I
click the application launcher, the screen opens up on my secondary
monitor. All windows I open show up on the secondary monitor. If I log
out and in that will fix the issue and things will open on the correct
monitor.

Nivdia driver 410.78 Nvidia 2080 video card.
Primary monitor: Dell AW3418DW on display port. 3440x1440 resolution
Secondary monitor: Dell 2407WFP on HDMI 1920x1200 resolution

Operating System: Kubuntu 18.10
KDE Plasma Version: 5.14.4
Qt Version: 5.11.1
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.52.0
Kernel Version: 4.18.0-12-generic
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 1800X Eight-Core Processor
Memory: 31.4 GiB of RAM

This is reproducible every time.

yaml-cpp 0.6.2-1ubuntu1 uploaded, with a symbols file (and proposed on
salsa, too https://salsa.debian.org/debian/yaml-cpp/merge_requests/2 ).
I'll upload rebuilds of the rdepends, too.

Hey, I've just upgraded from bionic to cosmic and I seem to be hit by
this. Perhaps. What I experience is that while I have an encrypted root,
with the cosmic kernel I don't get a chance to input my passphrase.

Anything I can do to help debug this? I'm a web developer. I can use git
bisect.

[Bug 1807077] Re: mountall crashes on udev node with missing devname

2018-12-05 Thread Ryan Finnie
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * udev block nodes without a devname will crash mountall, resulting in
+ an unbootable system (emergency root shell)
+
+ * While this is not likely to happen in a matched distro/kernel
+ environment (it was discovered while needing to run a bionic 4.15 kernel
+ on trusty), it is possible.
+
+ * The code in try_udev_device() assumes a block subsystem will always
+ have a devname; the SRU patches explicitly check for a devname and
+ return if null.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * HPE DL385 Gen10, Samsung a822 NVMe controller, trusty install
+
+ * Kernels <4.15 (or possibly 4.14) do not expose nvme0c33n1 and do not
+ trigger the bug. Tested on 4.13, 4.4 and 3.13.
+
+ * Kernel 4.15 exposes nvme0c33n1 in udev but does not have a devname,
+ mountall crash ensues.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * Patch might ignore legitimate block devices on existing
+ installations. Unlikely, since the logic path for null devname leads
+ directly to a program crash.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ * Additional context for Canonical employees: PS4.5 is a trusty backend
cloud, but we now have Gen10 hardware incoming (this was discovered while
adding new nova-compute hardware). Older kernels are not usable because Gen10
requires ilorest, which requires a >4.4 kernel (at least artful 4.13 is known
good). So trusty+4.15 is the only viable combination for continued support of
the cloud while adding new hardware. This is done via apt pinning of bionic
for the kernel packages, and, mountall notwithstanding, is working fine so far.
+
+
+ Original description:
+
Running bionic's 4.15 kernel on trusty on an HPE DL385 Gen10 results in
a device node for the NVMe controller,
  /devices/pci:40/:40:03.1/:43:00.0/nvme/nvme0/nvme0c33n1
which itself does not have a devname. When mountall gets to it:

  fsck_update: updating check priorities
  try_mount: /srv/nova/instances waiting for device
try_udev_device: ignored /dev/loop5 (not yet ready?)
try_udev_device: ignored /dev/loop6 (not yet ready?)
try_udev_device: ignored /dev/loop1 (not yet ready?)
try_udev_device: ignored /dev/loop0 (not yet ready?)
  try_udev_device: block (null) (null) (null)

and then crashes, leaving the boot at an emergency root shell. A
successful scan looks like this for comparison:

  try_udev_device: block /dev/sdb (null) (null)
  try_udev_device: block /dev/sdb (null) (null)
  try_udev_device: block /dev/sda (null) (null)
  try_udev_device: block /dev/nvme0n1 ed56e3a9-60f7-4636-85a2-b53137b598e7
(null)
  try_udev_device: block /dev/bcache0 756cb2c6-b999-4905-a021-c2e688e81a86
instances

- The (forthcoming) debdiffs check for a null devname in try_udev_device()
- and will not attempt to process it.

[Bug 1772811] Re: different behaviors for switch display mode between xenial and bionic

2018-12-05 Thread Yuan-Chen Cheng
Happened to have a machine install disco, test passed:

press key once will move to the next mode, instead of the first mode.

OSD still moves fast (or won't stay on the screen for seconds). That's
not a good user experience

Per what I know, Hugh takes today off. Will sync with him tomorrow.

OK, false alarm -- 4.4.0-140 is now crashing for me as well. As far as I
know nothing has changed between now and yesterday. Same computer, same
drives, everything. Back to 4.4.0-138 for me.

[Bug 1807077] [NEW] mountall crashes on udev node with missing devname

2018-12-05 Thread Ryan Finnie
Public bug reported:

Running bionic's 4.15 kernel on trusty on an HPE DL385 Gen10 results in
a device node for the NVMe controller,
/devices/pci:40/:40:03.1/:43:00.0/nvme/nvme0/nvme0c33n1
which itself does not have a devname. When mountall gets to it:

fsck_update: updating check priorities
try_mount: /srv/nova/instances waiting for device
try_udev_device: ignored /dev/loop5 (not yet ready?)
try_udev_device: ignored /dev/loop6 (not yet ready?)
try_udev_device: ignored /dev/loop1 (not yet ready?)
try_udev_device: ignored /dev/loop0 (not yet ready?)
try_udev_device: block (null) (null) (null)

and then crashes, leaving the boot at an emergency root shell. A
successful scan looks like this for comparison:

try_udev_device: block /dev/sdb (null) (null)
try_udev_device: block /dev/sdb (null) (null)
try_udev_device: block /dev/sda (null) (null)
try_udev_device: block /dev/nvme0n1 ed56e3a9-60f7-4636-85a2-b53137b598e7 (null)
try_udev_device: block /dev/bcache0 756cb2c6-b999-4905-a021-c2e688e81a86
instances

The (forthcoming) debdiffs check for a null devname in try_udev_device()
and will not attempt to process it.

[Bug 1807076] [NEW] gnome-control-center doesn't start

2018-12-05 Thread Tomasz Majchrzak
Public bug reported:

gnome-control-center doesn't start. There is no crash, core dump, etc.

gnome-control-c[2962]: gtk_window_present_with_time: assertion 'GTK_IS_WINDOW

Actually something similar has been seen already in the past but it

  *
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-screensaver/+bug/1428307/comments/3
