[Bug 1804287] Re: vgauth needs to start before vmtoolsd

2018-12-16 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Thanks to Bernd my MP was accepted and is in latest Debian and synced to
Ubuntu-Disco now.
While I'm sort of confident on the change, I'd say we'll keep the new 10.3.5 in
Disco until after the Christmas break and then take a look at the backports to
18.04 and 18.10.

[Bug 1808183] Re: ASPEED server console output extremely slow after upgrade to 18.04

2018-12-16 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
** Description changed:

+ ===SRU Justification===
+ [Impact]
+ Server console is extremely slow on ast, after the upgrade from 16.04 to
+ 18.04.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Remove firmware/bootloader configured framebuffer device before probing.
+
+ [Test]
+ User confirmed the patch fixes the issue.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Low. The fix is in stable tree, limits to one specific device, and other
+ DRM drivers already do this for a while.
+
+ ===Original Bug Report===
After the upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 my server console is extremely slow.
It looks similar to the youtube clips mentioned in the problem described
here: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2399941
My server is attached to a KVM switch with VGA cable to a 1920x1080 LCD.
It runs on an ASUS P9D-X board.
Before the upgrade everything was fine.
Now it is so slow that it sometimes even hangs during boot and goes into an
emergency console where I just can do a ctrl-alt-delete as described in bug
1802469

@dannf :

I did extract the same package (ibm-
java80_8.0.5.25-0ubuntu1.debian.tar.gz) that I have uploaded and dont
see any difference in the copyright.

- - - - - distribution notice for the source and binary packages - -
- - -

This software is included in Ubuntu by special license agreement between
IBM and Canonical, which authorizes its distribution in the Ubuntu archive,
its mirrors and the Canonical Partner Archive. Distribution outside of the
Ubuntu mirror network is not covered by this agreement.

- - - - - copyright notice and license for Debian packaging - - - -

Also, below is the license number that I can see:
L/N: L-JWOD-9SYMUC
D/N: L-JWOD-9SYMUC
P/N: L-JWOD-9SYMUC

Can you please confirm if the License numbers are the same. Thanks !!

2018-12-16 Thread Ben
Also works for me @vblack2006

I downloaded the current stable kernel from kernel.org (4.19.9), applied
the 3 patches that you linked to and added:

SND_PCI_QUIRK(0x1043, 0x10a1, "ASUS UX391UA", ALC294_FIXUP_ASUS_SPK

to /sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c

After compiling and installing, I now have sound working on my UX391UA
running Fedora 29!

[Bug 1808658] Re: display goes blank and system hangs after (and sometimes before) gdm3 login with nvidia-driver-390 and a gtx 970m

2018-12-16 Thread Jeremy Carter
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

After entering username and password, gnome3 never loads, and instead
you are stuck on a blank screen. Switching tty doesn't work. Sometimes
gdm3 doesn't even load and the blank screen happens before you can try
to log in. Without a workaround, you are forced to boot into recovery
mode and purge nvidia, reverting back to nouveau.

At first glance, this seems similar to this bug:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
  drivers-390/+bug/1752053/+index?comments=all

However, none of the solutions listed there work and the workaround is to use
lightdm instead of gdm3:
  sudo apt install lightdm

If it doesn't ask you to set the default display manager, then do this after,
and set lightdm as the default when prompted:
  sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3

After that, the system will boot and let you log in normally.

This problem is happening on a Clevo laptop without Optimus, with a
dedicated nvidia gtx 970m device, after installing any of the modern
nvidia drivers from version 390 onward, from the official repo, from the
graphics PPA, and I presume also the official driver from the nvidia
  site.

I tested on both Ubuntu 18.04.1 + updates, and Ubuntu 18.10 + updates.

I tested with nvidia driver versions 390, 396, and 415.

gdm3 works fine until you install the nvidia driver.

[Bug 1808740] [NEW] Outdated buggy version of the Heimdall flash utility included in the distro

2018-12-16 Thread Marat BN
Public bug reported:

The version of Heimdall currently installed on Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS is
v1.4.1

This is an old outdated version that has a bug that prevents it from
working with certain newer Samsung Galaxy phones. The nature of this
bug is that Heimdall is unable to connect to the phone due to "libusb
error -7".

This bug is documented on the Heimdall GitHub page at https://github.com
/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/issues/209

There is also a parallel Debian bug at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=800573;msg=5 and a Reddit discussion at
https://www.reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/9ar7gh/s5_plus_kccat6_step_6_doesnt_work_heimdall_error/e4yjefj/

The solution is to use Heimdall latest version v1.4.2

This latest version worked for me as well, but I had to compile it
manually.

The Ubuntu package repo should be upgraded to Heimdall version v1.4.2 so
that Ubuntu users don't need to compile it manually to be able to flash
their Samsung phones.

1) Release of Ubuntu I'm using:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

2) The version of 'heimdall-flash' package I'm using:

3) What I expected to happen:
Package manager should be installing the version 1.4.2 instead of 1.4.1-2

4) What happened instead:
Package 1.4.1-2 was installed.

[Bug 1767312] Re: [radeon] Totem with gstreamer1.0-vaapi and Xorg: wrong color on H264 videos

2018-12-16 Thread Christopher Snowhill
Adding a comment to indicate that this is a problem with the 10bpc
support which is enabled in Radeon graphics. I am unsure if it is
enabled in Intel's drivers, so that would explain why it does not occur
there. Either VA-API is outputting wrong, the client library is
outputting wrong, or all the player applications are wrong. Something
appears to be matching the buffers to each other without a conversion,
simply because both RGBA32 and RGBA10-10-10-2 have the same number of
bytes per pixel, but clearly completely different structure.

A workaround is to add the following to the //driconf/device section of
/etc/drirc:

Clearly, this workaround should not be the only way, since someone in
the processing chain clearly wants 10bpc support, and some applications
can benefit from it, somehow.

[Bug 1752437]

2018-12-16 Thread m.kolesinski
(In reply to Robert Munn from comment #103)
> I can confirm the patch is included in 4.19.7 as well.

AFAIK, patches aren't normally part of a kernel release...those are up
to your distro.

So, it sounds like some distros are including this in their patchsets
they apply, but I see no mention of this issue in any of the changelogs
yet for mainline kernel releases. This is one aspect of this bug
tracking system I find frustrating...I don't see a link from the bug
pointing to the release it is fixed in, and vice versa. The bug
tracking and release systems are not tied together as best I can tell.

In order to patch my distro, I had to recompile from source, and hand-
create a patch using the edits in the last attachment in this thread.
My biggest hassle was the fact that I have a slow and flaky internet
connection, and git is just a pile o' crap when it comes to dealing with
that (no download resume support...). I opted to download the source
manually, then hack the MAKEPKG for Arch to skip the whole process. I
could have just directly hand-edited the source at that point, but still
opted to just create a patch file, and edited MAKEPKG to pull in my
custom file.

You then have to add it to your boot loader, etc., just like any other
kernel build.

[Bug 1752437]

2018-12-16 Thread Shelnutt2
I've just updated to 4.19.9, verified the patch was included, and I'm
now getting:

cmi: probe of SMB0001:00 failed with error -5

I'm running the latest bios, F.31 Rev.A for my hp envy x360 15z. Has
anyone else encountered this? I'm wondering if I'm missing some kernel
config setting or if this latest bios has changed the ACPI table?

That error can be safely ignored, the CMI device is not used on your
laptop, 4.20 will have a patch silencing this error.

Right, let me be more specific. I'm on Ubuntu 18.10, I downloaded the
latest kernel debs from:

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

which at the time was 4.19.7. These are not the official kernels in the
Ubuntu repo, but they are builds from the Ubuntu team. You have to
download and install them yourself. I did that with 4.19.7. I was not
expecting the patch to be included, but a couple of days later I touched
the screen to wipe off a speck of dust and the page scrolled.

Still takes some work and I would not recommend it to a novice, but it's
quite a bit easier (and far less time consuming) than compiling from
source.

[Bug 1752437]

2018-12-16 Thread obelisk
Hi all,

I have been following this bug and patch for a while for my bq-100, it's
exhilarating to know that you guys solved the touch/flip issue and I can
go back as running my laptop vm host on linux again.

I've been refreshing this daily to see when the RESOLVED changes into
VERIFIED so I can DL a stable kernel, but I think it doesn't work this
way.

Therefore, can someone please point to how do I get Hans de Goede's patch into
an ubuntu 18.10 install?
Is it the patch command, or ukuu, or a clean compile of the kernel (and if so,
any howto for ubuntu for required extras?).

I usually don't poke into my daily driver computer if it's not required,
but this Windows as host OS was supposed to only be till October, it
unbalances my zen :-)

So, wait till official patched Kernel (any time estimate)?
Or patch the kernel?

Cheers all.

[Bug 1804923] Re: App freezes on Wifi page

2018-12-16 Thread Malcolm Lalkaka
Thanks for looking into this and sorry for the late reply. It looks like
you already found an existing fix for this, but if you still need me to
provide a backtrace, please let me know and I'll try to get that for you
sooner this time.

You mentioned that this was fixed in 18.10, but after installing all
available updates from Ubuntu Software, it doesn't look like I have the
fix. Running `gnome-control-center --version` returns `gnome-control-
center 3.30.2`. Is that the version that should have the fix?

Also for the future, is there a way that I can tell if a particular
upstream merge request has made it into an Ubuntu package?

2018-12-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 1808653] Re: xorg? 4k only at 30hzIntel® Iris™ Plus 655

2018-12-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
4K 60Hz with RGB colour requires that:
  1. The computer's HDMI port supports HDMI 2.0; and
  2. The HDMI cable supports HDMI 2.0; and
  3. The screen supports HDMI 2.0
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Refresh_frequency_limits_for_standard_video)

It appears #1 is true because:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/boards-kits/nuc/kits/nuc8i5beh.html

It appears #3 is true because:
https://www.lg.com/au/it-monitors/lg-27UD58

So I suggest the problem most likely is that you're not using a high
enough quality HDMI cable. Try replacing the cable with another that you
are sure supports HDMI 2.0.

Although that is for 8-bit true colour only... If you are really wanting
to use "deep color" (10-bit) at 4K 60Hz then you will need a computer,
cable and monitor that supports HDMI 2.1
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Refresh_frequency_limits_for_HDR10_video).
Unfortunately both your computer and monitor only support HDMI 2.0 so do
not support deep colour modes of 4K 60Hz.
