[Bug 1805079] Re: click/pop noise in the headphone on several lenovo laptops

2019-01-01 Thread Hui Wang
@Vadim

Today I tested on lenovo P72 and Yoda again, I installed the kernel here
(https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.20/), I can't
reproduce the noise you mentioned. I can reproduce the quiet volume
issue on both machines.

[Bug 1808116] Re: 4.15 and higher kernels do not read the SD card

2019-01-01 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
The next step is bisecting the kernel to find the commit that introduced
the regression.

$ sudo apt build-dep linux
$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
$ cd linux
$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good v4.14-rc8
$ git bisect bad v4.15-rc1
$ make localmodconfig
$ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg
Install the newly built kernel, then reboot with it.
If the issue still happens,
$ git bisect bad
Otherwise,
$ git bisect good
Repeat to "make -j`nproc` deb-pkg" until you find the commit that causes the
regression.

[Bug 1810235] Re: cryptsetup silently fails in live environment

2019-01-01 Thread Nathan
Additional Information:

gdisk shows the partition type as , the drive (sda3) boots and runs
without issue. Cryptsetup however; cannot access it after boot but it
does properly mount and run the contents of the encrypted partition
(i.e. root drive).

The drive was originally set up following the instructions found at the
link below with the intention being to resize the encrypted portion
later (expand) via a livecd.

[Bug 1810239] [NEW] amd_iommu conflict with Marvell Sata controller

2019-01-01 Thread Steven Ellis
Public bug reported:

This bug is to confirm that the Marvell 88SE9230 chipset bug presents
under AMD's IOMMU implementation with Ubuntu 18.04 and the latest HWE
Kernel

This has similar characteristics to
 - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1089768

System
 - AMD Athlon 200GE
 - Gigabyte GA-B450M-S2H board
 - Marvell 88SE9230 SATA Controller with latest Firmware

Kernel
 - Ubuntu 4.18.0-13.14~18.04.1-generic 4.18.17

If I boot the HWE 4.18.0-13-generic Kernel I get the errors reported above

If I boot with "amd_iommu=off" the drives appear to work correctly.

[Bug 1810235] [NEW] cryptsetup silently fails in live environment

2019-01-01 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

When attempting to acccess an existing (working) LUKS partition from the
LiveCD environment, cryptsetup fails silently. No exceptions are thrown,
no errors displayed. The LUKS device remains completely inaccessible.

I've attached an strace with the following two commands, "cryptsetup
luksDump /dev/sda3", and "cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda3 crypted" as
there was nothing in the logs that clearly point to a problem other than
the expected result being missing.

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

If a folder is opened in the GNOME/nautilus list view it is not always possible
to get the right mouse click menu of the current folder because nautilus
selects a whole line instead of a file name and produced right click menu
belongs to a file in the list, not to the current folder.
If the current folder list is short enough then one can right click on the
empty space below the last line and that way can get the right click menu of
the current folder.
This problem is caused by nautilus selecting a whole line in the list view
instead of a file name in the list.

[Bug 1810233] [NEW] Add exfat-fuse to recommends

2019-01-01 Thread Evan Derickson
Public bug reported:

exFAT is, to my knowledge, the only file format supporting files greater
than 4GB which can be read, written, and formatted with the standard GUI
tools of both Windows and macOS. Though not a free standard, it is
otherwise ideal for external storage such as USB sticks which might be
used to exchange files among these different systems.

Users are somewhat likely to encounter an exFAT-formatted drive at some
point, and the package is quite small. It is always frustrating to
encounter a filesystem which cannot be read, and a user who has already
consented to unfree software would benefit from having exFAT support
pre-installed, saving their time in researching the problem,
downloading, and installing the package. A user who never needs this
package, but who has installed ubuntu-restricted-extras package, will
almost certainly not notice or object to an extra 80kB on their system.

For these reasons, I would like to request that the exfat-fuse package
be added as a recommended package by the ubuntu-restricted-extras
package.

[Bug 1810226] [NEW] With "--gpu-api=vulkan", MPV complains that it cannot find SPIRV, despite spirv-tools being installed

2019-01-01 Thread 賴家亨
Public bug reported:

Please rebuild the package and to the problem!

This happens because your mpv is compiled without support for
libshaderc, which is the only SPIR-V backend that mpv supports for now
(apart from the deprecated nvidia-only VK_NV_glsl_shader which we will
be dropping support for eventually). To solve the issue you will need to
install libshaderc and make sure mpv is built against it.

Note: It wouldn't be too difficult to support using glslang directly
instead of shaderc. I have already written a C wrapper for glslang for
this purpose for a different project; if you want to try merging it to
mpv I could offer some pointers. That said, using shaderc is still
preferred to glslang since it means you (i.e. we) get better
diagnostics.

[Bug 1804603] Re: systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service fails on btrfs

2019-01-01 Thread fusillator
hi again, not sure if the most sensible approach
anyway in bionic I tried to revert the last two patches from the source of
systemd_237-3ubuntu10.9.debian with the following commands:

export QUILT_PATCHES=debian/patches
export QUILT_REFRESH_ARGS="-p ab --no-timestamps --no-index"
quilt pop
quilt pop
sed 's/^CVE-2018-6954.*/#&/' debian/patches/series

Then I recompiled and installed the new package and the error disappear.
Anyway the involved patches were there to fix some issues:

$ quilt header patches/CVE-2018-6954
Description: tmpfiles: don't resolve pathnames when traversing recursively
 through directory trees

 Otherwise we can be fooled if one path component is replaced underneath
us.

 The patch achieves that by always operating at file descriptor level (by using
 *at() helpers) and by making sure we do not any path resolution when traversing
 direcotry trees.

 However this is not always possible, for instance when listing the content of a
 directory or some operations don't provide the *at() helpers or others (such as
 fchmodat()) don't have the AT_EMPTY_PATH flag. In such cases we operate on
 /proc/self/fd/%i pseudo-symlink instead, which works the same for all kinds of
 objects and requires no checking of type beforehand.

 Also O_PATH flag is used when opening file objects in order to prevent
 undesired behaviors: device nodes from reacting, automounts from
 triggering, etc...

 Fixes: CVE-2018-6954

Origin: upstream,
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/commit/936f6bdb803c432578e2cdcc5f93f3bfff93aff0
Bug: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/7986

$ quilt header patches/CVE-2018-6954_2
Description: Make tmpfiles safe

 In addition to backporting the changesets in #8822, this also backports
 e04fc13 (test: add tests for systemd-tmpfiles), as well as empty_to_root()
 from v239.

Origin: upstream, https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/8822/commits
Bug: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/7986

So I'm not sure if it's a secure/stable workaround
Maybe it would be better mixixing up the releases installing the patched
package from cosmic-proposed... I will test on another snapshot to see what
happens..
Just a curiosity: is bionic still supported?

[Bug 1810224] [NEW] Mouse Click Emulation should not mutually exclude Fingers and Area

2019-01-01 Thread Dan Dascalescu
Public bug reported:

I want to set both two-finger and bottom right tap to trigger right-
click.

In GNOME Tweaks -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Mouse Click Emulation, these two
options are mutually exclusive, so I can't do that.

I would suggest making these two options checkboxes, and getting rid of
"Disabled" - the user simply won't check either of the checkboxes. By
having checkboxes instead of the "checkmark" radio button selection,
users like me would be able to trigger right click with both two-finger
taps and by tapping the bottom right of the touchpad.

[Bug 1810223] [NEW] i2c-designware stops working after S4 on CHT platforms

2019-01-01 Thread Jesse Sung
Public bug reported:

== Impact ==

can't be accessed.
[ 272.628526] PM: Timekeeping suspended for 115.313 seconds
[ 272.633110] ACPI: Waking up from system sleep state S4

[  274.214314] i2c_designware 80860F41:00: timeout in disabling adapter

== Fix ==
This happens after these two commits:
* 36c27d206b21 - PM: i2c-designware-platdrv: Optimize power management
(2018-12-07 16:21:11 +0800)
* 489cd2fafa2d - PM: i2c-designware-platdrv: Use DPM_FLAG_SMART_PREPARE
(2018-12-07 16:21:11 +0800)
Until there's a proper fix for them, both of them need to be reverted in order
to make S4 works again.

== Test Case ==
Boot with the kernel, S4, and then wake the system up.

== Risk of Regression ==
Risk should be low since we're removing new features.

[Bug 1810222] [NEW] "Record a short screecast" creates 0-byte WEBM files

2019-01-01 Thread Dan Dascalescu
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04. When I press Shift+Ctrl+Alt+R, I see an
orange dot in the upper-right corner, and a new .webm files in ~/Videos.

Several problems:

1. There seems to be no actionable UI for this function. If I click the
orange dot, I don't see any sort of menu, such as to pause or stop the
recording.

2. The files is incorrectly named. The timestamp uses the DD-MM-
HH:MM:SS format, but the HH is 05:26 when it's 5:26pm (it should be
17:26).

3. After I press Shift+Ctrl+Alt+R, the orange dot disappears, but the
.webm file is empty.

What am I doing wrong?

This is typical for Seagate USB devices on recent Linux kernels if UAS
mode is enabled.

See info and related tickets about UAS on Linux here:

Still happens time to time, even with fresh 18.10 install. It's a

[Bug 1810216] [NEW] Unable to run do-release-upgrade under script(1) because of a need to clear the screen

2019-01-01 Thread Kevin O'Gorman
Public bug reported:

I like to do system updates under script(1) and have a collection of
bash aliases to do these things and log the script output. Otherwise
all that stuff scrolls by with no chance for me to use it later.

I just tried to update my system to 18.04, and it failed with the following
output:
  Checking for a new Ubuntu release
  Get:1 Upgrade tool signature [819 B]

  Get:2 Upgrade tool [1,263 kB]

  Fetched 1,264 kB in 0s (0 B/s)

  authenticate 'bionic.tar.gz' against 'bionic.tar.gz.gpg'
  extracting 'bionic.tar.gz'
  Clear screen capability required.

This seems onerous to me. What's the point of generating output if
there's no way to learn from it, refer to it, or remember it?

[Bug 1810214] [NEW] [ZenBook UX433FA_UX433FA, Realtek ALC294, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2019-01-01 Thread Oran Gol
Public bug reported:

There is no sound whatsoever while the controls all seems to indicate
the playback is working. The patop's internal speaker, headphones, even
bluetooth is not outputting any sound. Trying to upgrade the kernel to
two different versions had no effect. There simply is no sound output
nor is there any indication the microphone is working either, but
without sound output that's hard to confirm. There are not issues with
sounds when I boot into Windows

[Bug 1810212] [NEW] kubuntu desktop switching via keyboard stopped working

2019-01-01 Thread jpeg729
Public bug reported:

My system:
Kubuntu 18.04 fully up to date as of 01/01/2019 on an old laptop that ran
Ubuntu 14.04 with no hiccups whatsoever.

I don't use activities.
I have a 3x2 grid of desktops with the following shortcuts.

Ctrl+Alt+Arrow to switch desktops - these recently stopped working.
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Arrow to move a window to another desktop - these still work
fine.

I have tried changing the shortcuts for switching desktops, nothing
works. The desktops widget still lets me change desktops by mouse click.

The commands "wmctrl -s number" and "qdbus org.kde.KWin /KWin
setCurrentDesktop 1" still work, so I made myself a script and added
some custom shortcuts, but it is sad that I should have to.

This is a major improvement already and can also be used in Thunderbird.
The directory (on Ubuntu) is ~/.thunderbird/XXX.default/chrome, which
didn't exist initially.

Would like to see a built-in complete solution to this for both Firefox
and Thunderbird.

[Bug 220263]

2019-01-01 Thread L. David Baron
I suspect that many aspects of this actually were fixed at various
times. But the hard part is to prevent all the CSS changes in the
browser front-end from triggering some aspect of it again. (At one
point I think I'd made a testing mode in which the correct
foreground/background pairs were always the same color, so that no text
should be visible, that could be used to check that colors were matched
correctly. I'm not sure if I even landed the code for it or what
happened to it since.) I'd also done some work to document what those
pairs were, i.e., the rules for which native-theme-derived foreground
color should be matched with which background color so that themes work
correctly. (-moz-appearance makes this a bit more complicated, since
foreground colors could be matched with a -moz-appearance background as
well.)

The number of comments recently makes me suspect that something got
*worse* recently.

In theory fixing this probably requires:
 * documenting what the valid foreground-color and (background-color or
-moz-appearance) pairs are for use of colors from native themes
 * developing a mechanism to check that the UI uses only those pairs together
and nothing else (probably by making each pair render the same (bright) color
as a diagnostic
 * auditing the Firefox UI
 * checking that the things we're extracting from GTK themes make sense with
the rules that we're applying

[Bug 220263]

2019-01-01 Thread Evan Klitzke
(In reply to David Baron :dbaron: ⌚UTC+2 from comment #45)
> The number of comments recently makes me suspect that something got *worse*
> recently.

Yes, something did change in GNOME recently. Prior to GNOME 3.28 there
was a GTK preference called gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme that could
be used to get dark widgets. This could either be set in ~/.config
/gnome-terminal/gtk-3.0/settings.ini. This was also exposed as a toggle
option in the gnome-tweaks tool, which is probably how most users had
set it it. This GTK option has been deprecated in GNOME 3.28, and the
new way to get a dark theme is to explicitly set one's GTK theme to
Adwaita dark. You can read about this a bit more at [1] and [2].

Firefox apparently has some logic to ignore gtk-application-prefer-dark-
theme, but that logic no longer works on GNOME 3.28 with the Adwaita
dark theme. As was mentioned in comment #43, the work around for GNOME
3.28 is to set a user pref (i.e. in about:config or user.js) that sets
widget.content.gtk-theme-override to Adwaita:light.

As I suspect the overwhelming majority of Firefox users with dark GTK
themes are using Adwaita dark (which is bundled with GNOME), I would
suggest updating the Firefox dark them detection logic to handle the new
case with the Adwait theme names hard coded. This is hacky, but probably
mitigates the issue for most users.

2019-01-01 Thread Jonathan Lane
Evan, what that patch will not do is fix the input field issue on
explicitly chosen dark themes. What I would recommend instead is simply
making this bit of userContent.css equivalent completely override Gtk
regardless of theme, to produce the desired output:

INPUT, TEXTAREA {color: black ; background: #ff ; }

This is the general case which websites expect, and which users expect,
and in my testing does not interfere with sites that explicitly set up a
different color combination for text input areas. I don't even think
it's -possible- to recreate this bug on the Windows or Mac ports without
manually messing with userContent.css, so forcibly overriding Gtk here
seems like the intelligent thing to do.

[Bug 220263]

2019-01-01 Thread Adomas-dev
Just want to confirm that this bug is still NOT fixed. I use KDE Plasma
desktop enviroment with Breeze Dark color scheme. Usually I use
Chromium, sometimes Google Chrome, as they don't have issues with dark
themes. But I want to use Firefox and because of this bug I can't. I was
following Firefox releases past 4-5 years expecting to see a fix for
this.

Now I use "Text Contrast for Dark Themes" extension which kind of helps, but
not enough for daily use.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/text-contrast-for-dark-themes/

It's sad to see that this bug already 17 years old and does not get
enough attention to get fixed.

As dark themes for GTK+ getting more popular, I hope to see a fix in
future. Could be set as a milestone for 2020 or something, that would be
really great! No other browser has this issue, only Firefox.

If this is super hard to fix, maybe would be good idea to switch to
another toolkit instead of GTK+? For example Qt toolkit is very good,
has a lot of support and works pretty well.

OFFTOPIC: One thing made me happy with recent Firefox releases, that
HighDPi display support is improved, and it's possible to get non-
integer value scaling of UI and websites. For that I was waiting 2 years
and I am really happy it got improved. To get Dark Theme compatibility
would be last step to make Firefox usable for me and some other users!

[Bug 220263]

2019-01-01 Thread Abhishek Madhu
(possible way to solve this issue?)

Sir,
One option might be to remove all dependency on system themes.
Firefox shouldn't care about the system themes. No dependence.

All text should be rendered:
1. like the .css developer wanted
or, 2. if he uses !important, render it simply black on white.

In a nutshell, default FF canvas(for everything, including input boxes) and
font should be white and black respectively.
We shouldn't inherit this from the system theme. Why should we? Do we really
need to?

Hope this would nullify @dbaron sir's requirements and make it easier to
implement this, sooner.

Thank You

[Please do not ban me if this does not help. Ping me and I'll remove it myself.
This is my first time coming out with ideas as stupid as this :)]

2019-01-01 Thread Jason C. McDonald via ubuntu-bugs
I wholly agree with Storm's assessment. As a programmer, a web
developer, and a UI designer, the fact that Firefox has sat on this bug
for over a decade is shameful, especially since it has been *patched*
with extensions before.

For anyone affected, install the "Text Contrast for Dark Themes"
(https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/text-contrast-for-dark-
themes/?src=api) extension. I've been using it for the past few weeks,
and it resolves 98% of the problems related to this bug.

The fact that extension exists should NOT be taken as an excuse for
Firefox not to fix this. If anything, it means that Firefox developers
have even *less* excuse for taking care of the problem, since the patch
code is in the extension!

Dear Rimas Kudelis,

Let me answer each of your points. I'll leave point 1; to the last

> 2. Content colors are user-managed, and default to black-on-white:
> https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-fonts-and-colors-websites-
> use#w_change-font-color.

FALSE. Those colors have _nothing_ to do with default colors. They are
override colors, that, when apply, override websites' CSS as well. By
default they only apply with HighContrast theme, and no, "use system
colors" is NOT enabled on my FF.

I just set those colors to bright red and neon green - guess what?
Writing a review on addons.mozilla.org is _still_ light gray on white.
And that light gray is my system color, which shouldn't apply, yet it
does.

Ever since I use Firefox with a dark theme (about 10+ years) this was
broken. And currently there is no any way I know of, or that I could
find via hours of Googling, to change the default colors Firefox falls
back to if no color is specified.

> 3. On the other hand, form fields have always inherited the system-wide look
> by default.

And they shouldn't. Appearance, sure, but NOT colors. Colors of the host
system should not, ever, under any circumstance affect the colors
displayed in webpages, since webpages' look is independent of the host
system.

I disagree partly. It is their fault that they didn't specify colors,
and relying on the assumption that if no color is specified then
background will be white and text will be black.

But it is not their fault, that this assumption is true in every single
browser, except Firefox with dark theme. It is also not their fault,
that Firefox, instead of implementing these common expectations as
default, lets system colors bleed into webpages. And since we know that
many-many webdesigners will be lazy, why not save our users from all
that pain by implementing sane defaults?

Also, it's funny how parts of mozilla.org are affected by this issue.

And in a perfect world they would still do it, but we are not living in a
perfect world sadly, so we may as well account for that instead of sticking
heads into the sand.

If they don't have a dark system theme, it will work for them in every single
browser in existence. Only Firefox, combined with dark system theme does break
it.

So back to 1;

I'm desperate. I started using Firefox about 15 years ago because it was
the best, and_most_customizable_ browser out there. It had its flaws,
but we loved it regardless.

I had high hopes for Quantum, but instead it was a gigantic let down.
 - It killed off several amazing Addons, that are impossible to port to
WebExtension because it's extremely limited.
 - Addon devs' feature requests for functionality allowing said mods to be
ported were simply closed with "WONTFIX".
 - Even more customization was removed, partly by making it impossible for
Addons to customize FF now (eg. Classic Theme Restorer with millions of users),
turning firefox into the _least_customizable_ browser on the market.
 - The dark theme issue became MUCH worse. Until Quantum, I used a simple local
CSS that was an effective workaround for 99% of websites. Now the system colors
bleed into even more places, that I could only fix by overriding colors that
then break other pages that were fine without it, plus local CSS is now unable
to affect the Firefox GUI itself, making it impossible to fix this issue in the
GUI.

Firefox is still better IMHO than all other browsers in many regard, but
with every day I have to suffer with unreadable websites I feel more and
more tempted to just go to Chrome. This is NOT an issue in Chrome (or
any browser other than FF)
