[Bug 1781418] Re: User not being initialized correctly on login

2019-01-13 Thread Justin Jack
I faced this problem on two different machines (both lightdm + plasma
desktop, on both I happily used this combination on Ubuntu 16.04 but
once I upgraded to 18.04, or soon afterwards, I lost all my groups).

Switched to sddm on both, it helped. So mayhaps lightdm should be
dropped or downgraded, the issue (https://whatstatus.co/guess-ill-die)
is fairly critical (usb doesn't work, sudo has issues, pluggable devices
don't work).

Try checking the "Show Any" option in the "View" menu.
Does this show your saved passwords?

from https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-security-4

If the system is upgraded from 16.04, there should be some older kernels
still in your system. See if those kernels still work.

[Bug 1806472] Re: RTL8822BE WiFi Disabled in Kernel 4.18.0-12

2019-01-13 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
The drivers in staging won't get loaded when lockdown is enabled to
provide safety. There's a list to override behavior though.

The r8822be in its current form defaults to enable debugfs, which can be less
secure as it exposes and extra interface to userspace. But we are not sure if
the driver still works once the debugfs gets disabled, so please test this
kernel:
https://people.canonical.com/~khfeng/lp1806472/

Once we are sure r8822be still works when debugfs is disabled, we can
include this fix to Cosmic.

[Bug 1811641] [NEW] Wodim permissions error: /usr/bin/wodim: Operation not permitted. Warning: Cannot raise RLIMIT_MEMLOCK limits.

2019-01-13 Thread Dane Mutters
Public bug reported:

Tested on Linux Mint 19.1 AMD64 Cinnamon (Ubuntu 18.04 LTS base).

When copying an audio CD (didn't test with other media), this error
causes the writing process to abort before beginning:

/usr/bin/wodim: Operation not permitted. Warning: Cannot raise RLIMIT_MEMLOCK
limits.
/usr/bin/wodim: Resource temporarily unavailable. Cannot get mmap for 12587008
Bytes on /dev/zero.

A workaround is to enable the sticky bit on /usr/bin/wodim, like so:
sudo chmod +s /usr/bin/wodim

My user was already in the cdrom group, so permissions should not have been an
issue:
groups $USER
myuser : myuser adm cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare

I'm guessing this can be fixed with a simple change in the package
files, assuming the use of the sticky bit is not a security risk.

Below are logs from two audio CD copying attempts. The first one is
trying to burn a simulation without the workaround, which fails. The
second one is a simulation with the workaround, which succeeds. I also
did a real burn and tested the resulting audio CD, but forgot to save
the log file (sorry). Suffice to say that it worked.

[Bug 1811630] [NEW] Please merge openldap 2.4.47+dfsg-2 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2019-01-13 Thread Ryan Tandy
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I have prepared the merge of openldap 2.4.47+dfsg-2. This will probably
be the version released in Debian buster unless any release critical
bugs show up.

I made changes in Debian to how the contrib modules are built. I made
the same changes for nssov in this merge and tested it with the current
nss/pam-ldapd. I also added its man page which doesn't seem to have been
included before.

I performed a test build in a PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~rtandy/+archive/ubuntu/openldap2.4.47

Please consider sponsoring this update. Thank you!

[Bug 1765364] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2019-01-13 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From sura...@au1.ibm.com 2019-01-13 19:50 EDT---
Hi,

8c5909c419 ppc/spapr-caps: Change migration macro to take full spapr-cap
name

Was part of my original backport and so should already be present. But as has
already been said, this is purely
cosmetic.

The following 3 patches:
8fea704 target/ppc: Factor out the parsing in kvmppc_get_cpu_characteristics()
072f416a53: target/ppc: Don't require private l1d cache on POWER8 for
cap_ppc_safe_cache
b2540203bd: ppc/spapr_caps: Don't disable cap_cfpc on POWER8 by default

Should be added to allow for cap-cfpc to be set to workaround on POWER8.

That is all I would suggest.

[Bug 1811628] [NEW] Ubuntu 18.04 systemctl is-system-running always shows degraded in LXD containers

2019-01-13 Thread Bryan Quigley
Public bug reported:

Issue in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS:
lxc launch ubuntu-daily:18.04
lxc shell
# systemctl is-system-running
degraded

# systemctl --failed
  UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUBDESCRIPTION

● sys-kernel-config.mount loaded failed failed Kernel Configuration File
System
● systemd-modules-load.service loaded failed failed Load Kernel Modules

Fixed in Ubuntu 19.04:
lxc launch ubuntu-daily:19.04
lxc shell
systemctl is-system-running
running

It appears to be fixed by adding: ConditionVirtualization=!container to
both. Can this be backported to 18.04 or are we stuck with special
casing 18.04 vs future versions?

As far as I know this is the easiest way to see if a container finished
starting.

I think this is essentially the same thing as bug 534211, or at least
can be fixed in the same way. I'm working on an upstream fix now.

[Bug 1810583] Re: Daily cron restarts network on unattended updates but keepalived .service is not restarted as a dependency

2019-01-13 Thread Tom Scholten
I don't have a desktop edition ready at the moment, but would be willing
to pick that up if time allows. I concur with the findings of Ben, we
seem to hit the same, although we 'patched' the systemd unit file.

Looking around a bit I'm not sure what the best way would be to make it
systemd-networking and NetworkManager proof. Looking at the
documentation
(https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd.unit.html#PartOf)
it looks like PartOf is actually not a requirement and as such both
could be in there.

ongoing 18.04 & 18.10 support the Ubuntu Budgie Team proposes to wrap up
fixes as a SRU release for both 18.04 and 18.10. In this SRU we have
wrapped up reported issues that have been classified as LOW by the UB
dev team. In addition the scope of the change has been assessed to limit
the potential of regression. This is to ensure this SRU requests is
strictly limited in scope with the risk(s) being easily determinable.

Upstream Solus project is preparing for the budgie-desktop v10.5
release. This is an opportune time to look across the work developed
since the August 2017 baseline that budgie-desktop 18.04 is primarily
based on. Solus has been user testing budgie-desktop v10.5 since approx
Oct last year - Debian and Ubuntu 19.04 have now received this v10.5
preview since the beginning of this year.

[Impact]

The following budgie-desktop issues have been resolved for 18.04:

 1. Ensure show-desktop applet toggles correctly after showing a tooltip
 2. Allow cancel from polkit windows
 3. Make notifications consistent size; stop overlarge notification
  windows
 4. Ensure notifications remain visible if mouse is hovering over theme
 5. Support user based themes in legacy ~/.themes folder
 6. Enable autohiding when using multiple budgie panels
 7. deduplicate All category Menu

Most of these issues have been wrapped up in the 18.10 release. The
remaining issues from the above that apply to 18.10 are:

 6. Enable autohiding when using multiple budgie panels
 7. deduplicate All category Menu
In addition a 18.10 specific bug-fix has been applied as part of this SRU:
 8. Ensure Raven controls can be correctly hidden if configured on
  a relogon

[Test Case - 18.04]

1. Examine the Menu - All. Look for menu options that appear to be duplicated.
 Note these.
2. Add the show-desktop applet to the panel. Logout and login. Hover over the
showdesktop applet until the tooltip shows. Now toggle the button. The
desktop application windows do not toggle correctly on and off
3. Install from proposed the following packages: budgie-core budgie-desktop
gir1.2-budgie-1.0 libbudgie-plugin0 libbudgietheme0 libraven0
4. logout and login. Repeat 1 & 2 and note that they have been resolved
5. Mouse-over over a notification when it occurs - note it will now no longer
disappear until you no longer mouse over.

[Test Case - 18.10]

1. Examine the Menu - All. Look for menu options that appear to be duplicated.
 Note these.
2. From budgie-desktop-settings - configure Raven to hide a few options.
Logout and login. Examine Raven - notice that the options chosen to hide have
incorrectly reappeared.
3. Install from proposed the following packages: budgie-core budgie-desktop
gir1.2-budgie-1.0 libbudgie-plugin0 libbudgietheme0 libraven0 libbudgie-private0
4. logout and login. Repeat 1 & 2 and note that they have been resolved

[Regression Potential]

 * The worst case scenario is that the cherry-pick fixes may introduce
instability issues. Whilst the fixes themselves are - code-wise tiny -
there is a small possibility that a follow-up resolution may be
required. This however is thought highly unlikely since the commits
have been cherry-picked to be self contained and are not dependent on
other commits. Any issues are specific to Ubuntu Budgie or users how
are using budgie-desktop and have no impact on the wider Ubuntu
community.

[Bug 1811596] Re: Ubuntu Single Sign-On GUI not showing login button

2019-01-13 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1811596/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1800078] Re: plasma-discover does not show updates

2019-01-13 Thread Tamer Hassan
I did some cleanup and that fixed the problem.

1. uninstall all old snaps (which where shown in `df` command output as mounted
volumes)
2. uninstalled snapd as well (apt purge snapd)
3. start with a fresh apt sources:

sudo mv /etc/apt/soruces.list /etc/apt/sources.list.problematic
sudo touch /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo software-properties-qt

This will open software-properties-qt with no repositories selected.
Enable some repositories in the "Ubuntu Software" order to create new
sources.list file in /etc/apt/
Optionally, change the server to Main server or to any other server of your
choice.
After enabling some sources from Ubuntu software tab, you can enable the
updates. To do so, switch to Updates tab and select one or more updates
channel. I recommend selecting security and updates channel at least.

4. in the "other software" tab, also make sure there are no ppa's
depending on old ubuntu versions. else, remove them, and re-add later.

After the general cleanup as described above, the issue as described
above with plasma-discover is resolved

[Bug 1811615] [NEW] custom keyboard shortcut forgotten after restarting gnome

2019-01-13 Thread Vicente Reyes Valdivieso
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04.1
gnome-control-center 1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.2
mutter 3.28.3-2~ubuntu18.04.2
I don't know what else is important

I installed Ubuntu and changed the shortcut for closing a window (It's called
"Cerrar la Ventana" in spanish) from Alt+F4 to Super+Q using
gnome-control-center. It worked well
Then I restarted gnome (Alt+F2 then "r") and it stopped working.
It's weird because:
1) My other custom keyboard shortcuts keep working
2) gnome-control-center still reports it as being super+q
3) if I try to "change it" to super+q again directly that doesn't fix it, but
if I change it to another thing first and then back to super+q it works well.
4) If I restart gnome again, it stops working again (just that shortcut, not
the others)

[Bug 1811610] [NEW] latest strongswan update is broken in 18.10

2019-01-13 Thread heynnema
Public bug reported:

A lot of `strongswan` files got updated this morning. It breaks
strongswan because it can't find `/etc/ipsec.conf`. Sure enough, it's
missing. The package file indicates that it's there, but it doesn't get
installed.

I went to packages.ubuntu.com and downloaded `strongswan-
starter_5.6.3-1ubuntu4.1_amd64.deb` and manually reinstalled it, and IT
didn't install /etc/ipsec.conf either!

I manually extracted ipsec.conf from the .deb file, copied it to
/etc/ipsec.conf, chmod 600 /etc/ipsec.conf, and made sure it was
root:root, then `sudo systemctl restart ipsec`.

`sudo systemctl status ipsec` now shows correctly.

The /etc/ipsec.conf file looks like this...

# ipsec.conf - strongSwan IPsec configuration file

# basic configuration

config setup
# strictcrlpolicy=yes
# uniqueids = no

[Bug 1768976] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04

2019-01-13 Thread indigocat
Same problem here:

Lenovo ThinkPad T410s
Intel i5 (1st gen, 2.53Ghz)
NVidia NVS3100M graphics

Kernel 4.4 in 16.04 idles at 35°C - 37°C (fresh, high-quality thermal
paste applied a week ago).

Kernel 4.15 in 18.04 idles at 48°C - 52°C.

Only Dropbox and Megasync in the background; htop shows very low CPU use
from these 2 apps.

Overall system CPU usage (idle) doesn't go above 1.3% - 2% range.

Same workflow from 16.04 + kernel 4.4 runs 20°C hotter in 18.04 + kernel
4.15.

Regular operation with Chromium and Emacs drives temperature to 76°C -
80°C.

Critical temperature is 95°C before shutdown.

This is running really hot.

[Bug 1600622] Re: Screen doesn't lock or go to sleep when certain Chrome tabs are open

2019-01-13 Thread Jeremy Walker
>If you have this bug, what is the result of opening a terminal, and running
>systemctl suspend and waiting for a minute?

Nothing happened for a few seconds, then my network turned off, then
both screens turned off. I thought I was screwed, because my computer
has never come back to life from a "suspend" before, but when I pressed
some keys it (slowly) came back to normal.

So, it would seem that the command you provided (and I guess system
suspension in general) is working just fine ... despite my system being
in a state where my screens wouldn't turn off for power saving after
five minutes, as they normally would.

2019-01-13 Thread Harry P
@Tarmo, have you tried pressing super+L after resume, maybe twice? that
brings backa login prompt for me.

ps I don't work for ubuntu or canonical or anything, but I can't help
saying -- please don't nag open source teams about fixing bugs, it
doesn't help. if you need to recommendation ubuntu to "normal" users,
the lts doesn't have this problem. if you really need a fix you can
always fix it yourself, or pay someone else to.

[Bug 1811595] Re: 18.04 laggy login but works fine off of boot usb

A workaround I found from here (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1070862
/ubuntu-server-18-04-graphics-in-console-is-extremely-slow)

sudo vim /etc/default/grub
uncomment GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 and change to GRUB_GFXMODE=1027x768
then
sudo update-grub

Next disable ast driver
sudo vim /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
append line blacklist ast
then
sudo update-initramfs -u
reboot

[Bug 1624268] Re: pam_mount crashes SDDM because helper doesn't close session after authentication

2019-01-13 Thread pterrien
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1627340 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1627340

Hi,
I think this bug still occurs, at least on Debian testing (buster) with sddm
0.18.
I posted an analysis and a workaround on the following github issue, although
already closed: https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/637#issuecomment-453838344

tl;dr:
There is an issue in /etc/pam.d/sddm-greeter, that calls pam_mount through
'@include common-session'.
pam_mount will surely fail, as it is called for the local user sddm, which has
probably no access right to the given shared volume.

What is not normal, maybe, is that sddm will then catch a SIGTERM and so will
terminate.
The same kind of pam_mount failures occurs with /etc/pam.d/login (eg with user
root), and login can proceed correctly.
Why is this a blocking issue when processed by /etc/pam.d/sddm-greeter?

I could imagine the following solutions:
  - modify the /etc/pam.d/sddm-greeter file, either by:
- replacing the '@include common-session' statement by the actual
directives in /etc/pam.d/common-session, EXCEPT the one with pam_mount. This is
the workaround proposed by another user on github. It works, but I don't find
it very clean, to be honest.
- replacing the '@include common-session' statement with a substack, with
some conditions? I'm not an expert with PAM, I don't know if this is even
feasible?
  - do not terminate on a SIGTERM send by pam_mount? Is it feasible, too?
  - apply the workaround I propose: use the pam_mount extended user control
features, to exclude the sddm user from trying to mount the volume. We can
explicitly exclude this user, or a whole range (all local users for example).

Hope you will find this useful !

Cheers

I run unity-control-center from a shell, then I open Online ACcounts,

(unity-control-center:2435): Gtk-WARNING **: 11:48:19.101:

Each time I open Ubuntu Single Sign-On an additional GTK warning is
logged(1 the first time, two the second time, three the third.)

I enlarged the window to see if some controls were off the edge of the display
area. Nope.

[Bug 1811595] [NEW] 18.04 laggy login but works fine off of boot usb

2019-01-13 Thread Mat Nightingale
Public bug reported:

Running 18.04 off a boot usb stick works flawlessly, however after a
clean install the login screen is very laggy and once I enter my
password the screen resolution is all messed up and unreadable.

If I reboot and hold down shift to get the Grub menu and choose Advanced
then recovery mode and then without altering anything I choose resume
from the recovery menu and the login screen works perfectly.

All system updates are done.

[Bug 1640208] Re: Confusion between "scantool" and "freediag

2019-01-13 Thread Kees Cook
I have no idea how that connection happened. Seems like something
automatic in Launchpad? I've dropped the linkage on the scantool side
now. Weird!

** Changed in: scantool (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Fix Released
