[Bug 1795074] Re: 16.04 to 18.04 boots very slowly

2019-02-01 Thread Mark Ramsell
Had some cool data in there but the fact is turning of SVIDEO speeded up
the boot time to where it is not annoying and or reasonable.

Charge this to SVIDEO as duplicate? Should the SVIDEO device be pulled,
as it doesn't work, to prevent further problems?

[Bug 1814359] [NEW] Nvidia Driver 415 and lower prevents startup on 18.10

2019-02-01 Thread Viktor Szabo
Public bug reported:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-390/+bug/1752053

Literally this been reported thousands of times and AFTER A YEAR of NO
FIX, it is still affecting users! Is this some sort of a joke? I spent
over a day re-installing and trying everything again just to result with
a constant boot error, and I can't get anywhere near the OS because it
is stuck on a purple screen. When the gub comes up it displays some key
is wrong error but I don't have encryption enabled, afterwards only the
_ is stuck on the screen without flashing. Can't we finally get the
graphics drivers some love here from Canonical somehow? This is highly
irritating already.

[Bug 1666884] Re: libytnef: February 2017 multiple vulnerabilities (X41-2017-002)

2019-02-01 Thread Michael Gratton
Seth, no I didn't, it's just the debdiff taken from the dingo source
package: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libytnef/1.9.3-1

I admit this is pretty lazy, but assumed that since it was fine for
dingo it would be fine here.

[Bug 1814238] Re: deja-dup saves passphrase in /tmp

2019-02-01 Thread Michael Terry
OK... there is at least one sequence that does this.

When you:
1. restore files to their original location and
2. some files in the backup are outside your $HOME and
3. you have no deja-dup cache files for the backup location (like on a fresh
install)

In that case:
1. We write the encryption passphrase and/or network connection password to a
file like /tmp/deja-dup-XX so that we can run duplicity as root using
pkexec with those settings. (normally we pass those via environment variables,
but pkexec strips those)
2. That file is only read/writable for the current user (mode 0600).
3. It is deleted when the restore is finished.

So, while not ideal, this doesn't strike me as a critical bug. Still
though, we should consider ways to not do that.

[Bug 1814355] [NEW] snapd remove /usr/local/bin from the PATH for all systemd unit

2019-02-01 Thread E. MAS
Public bug reported:

Big regression in 2.37.1+18.04 compare to version 2.34.2

all these paths /usr/local/sbin & /usr/local/bin are not anymore in
the path of all systemd process .

So we can not start a daemon that use /usr/local/bin

reinstalling package 2.34.2 fix the problem

in 2.34.2 :

~# strings /proc/$(pidof /lib/systemd/systemd-resolved)/environ | grep PATH
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin

in 2.37.1+18.04 :

[Bug 1813512] Re: Almost everything messes up..emails log me out

2019-02-01 Thread Steve Beattie
Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your
report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can
better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it.

Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For
help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally,
in the report please include:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System ->
About Ubuntu.
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by
checking in Synaptic.
3) What happened and what you expected to happen.

The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide
variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .
Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make
your bug report much more complete. Thanks!

More specifically, if I do

pip install backports.os
python -c "from backports import os"

it fails as described. But if I then do

sudo apt remove python-configparser

it succeeds.

2019-02-01 Thread Gert van de Kraats
Reinstalled current libmutter.
With dual monitor horizontal aside this problem could not be reproduced because
logon-session crashes before showing logon-screen, (caused by bug #1790525).

Installed proposed version:

apt list libmutter-3-0
Listing... Done
libmutter-3-0/cosmic-proposed,now 3.30.2-1~ubuntu18.10.3 i386 [installed]

No crash anymore when trying to suspend at logon-screen.
Problem is solved by proposed package. No new other problems detected.

[Bug 1168915] Re: Visit Homepage link is non-functional

2019-02-01 Thread Mark Ramsell
So what happens when Synaptic clicks on a link?

# change user to root
sudo su
# try to launch any WebBrowser
exo-open --launch WebBrowser
root@Computer:~# Running Firefox as root in a regular user's session is not
supported. ($XAUTHORITY is /home/$USER/.Xauthority which is owned by
insert_real_username_here.)

It doesn't work because screen access is not allowed. You can go
through the trouble of gaining access to .Xauthority, a pain but
possible, OR

# launch application with correct user, NOT root. Here's a link from Synaptic
for 2048 game.
su -c 'exo-open --launch WebBrowser "https://github.com/xiaoyong/2048-Qt;'
insert_real_username_here

That works. It will open a new browser or open an existing browser if it
is the Default.

Don't delay, fix today. Of course it's a bit more complex cause you
need to check $SUDO_USER if running with [ $UID -eq 0 ] and translate
that to the appropriate code language.

[Bug 1803031] Re: erro: cannot find EFI directory.

2019-02-01 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Any user installing Ubuntu on UEFI systems and picking manual partitioning.
This leads to an installation config that cannot be completed due to the
missing partition not being detected until grub-installer runs at the end of
the install process

  [Test case]
The exact behavior will differ depending on the precise set of features
enabled in the system's firmware:

- == Any firmware mode (BIOS, UEFI, UEFI w/ CSM), using automatic
+ == In each firmware mode (BIOS, UEFI, UEFI w/ CSM), using automatic
  partitioning (full disk) ==

  1) Boot to an install media
  2) At the partitioning screen, pick "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" or "Use
entire disk - Guided partitioning".
  3) Confirm all changes and begin the installation.

The user should see no user prompt, and system is bootable after
  installation.

== System in UEFI, with or without CSM enabled ==

  1) Boot to an install media
  2) At the partitioning screen, pick "Something else" or "Manual partitioning".
  3) Create a single partition for /.
  4) Confirm all changes and begin the installation.

The installer should immediately warn the user that there is no EFI
System partition and offer to go back to the partitioning screen. Once
the EFI System partition is present, the user is not shown the prompt
and the installation completes successfully. The system is bootable.

Without the fix, the installation process happily continues and ends in
  a crash in grub-installer.

== System in BIOS mode, manual partitioning without ESP ==

  1) Boot to an install media
  2) At the partitioning screen, pick "Something else" or "Manual partitioning".
  3) Create a single partition for /.
  4) Confirm all changes and begin the installation.

Install should complete successfully, without prompting the user (an ESP
is not strictly required for booting).
-

  [Regression potential]
There may be unforseen cases in which users really do not want to create an
ESP despite using an installation medium that was booted in UEFI mode. In these
cases, users will now have an additional dialog warning them that the ESP does
not exist, and have the option to hit "Continue" after reading the message.

As in some cases the partitioning logic is run twice (for instance, when
in the ubiquity installer); there is some risk of additional warning
when going forward and back in the installer steps and the partitioning
screens. Any step in which the partitionning prompts unduly or refuses
to install should be investigated, they may be regressions if the setup
was previously allowed and lead to a succesfully completed installation.

[Bug 1784152] Re: i2c_hid_get_input floods system logs

2019-02-01 Thread Yan Mosyagin
Thanks to your comment I also realized that journald still logs the
dmesg driver spam which results in bloated journald log files as well.
Few more steps is required to alleviate that:

1. sudo vi /etc/systemd/journald.conf
2. Uncomment Storage=auto and change it to Storage=none
3. Uncomment ForwardToSyslog=yes
4. Save the file changes and reboot

This way logs are still forwarded to syslog where i2c_hid messages are
filtered by the blocklist config file but you lose the ability to
monitor logs using e.g. journalctl.

I would like to emphasize that this is a temporary solution which works
pretty well for my purpose but might not be a good fit for others.
Please try to work around this behavior on kernel driver level first
before resorting to syslog/journald shenanigans.

Eagerly looking forward towards a fix for Elan touchpads.

[Bug 1813403] Re: Better kernel core dump defaults

2019-02-01 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
** Description changed:

  Currently,

  `$ sysctl kernel.core_pattern`

  gives

  `kernel.core_pattern = |/usr/share/apport/apport %p %s %c %d %P`

- This should be considered a bug, since a minimal version of ubuntu
- (server, core etc) and more notoriously when run from containers, this
- will just error out, with no core dump being produced, due to the
- absence of apport. Adding to the problem, is with container where you
- can't just change it per container, and should be changed from the host.
- I think using apport (a non essential package) as a default without
- thought as to it's absence is not robust design.
+ This is usually fine, however, when run from containers or lxc this will
+ just error out, with no core dump being produced, due to it being
+ disabled. Adding to the problem: with container or lxc, you can't just
+ change it per container, and should be changed on the host. And it's not
+ reasonable to expect apport in all containers either. Since, this is a
+ common problem, I think it's important to consider a change in the
+ default handling.

There are multiple options to deal with this:

- 1. Drop apport as default and switch to a simple file in either
- /var/crash (this requires creating /var/crash as a part of the
- installation as it's currently created by apport), or /tmp
+ 1. Drop apport as default core_pattern handler and switch to a simple
+ file in either /var/crash (this requires creating /var/crash as a part
+ of the installation as it's currently created by apport), or /tmp and
+ let apport handle the core dump after the fact, and report it.

  2. Switch to systemd-coredump, and default to it, since it already does
this very well and provides "coredumpctl" which is much nicer to work
with. systemd-coredump also is a part of the systemd suite of utils and
doesn't pull in a larger dependency as apport -- which to date, isn't as
robust (I still have "core" files being left all over the place due to
the fact that apport reset's itself and crashes during startup aren't
handled properly). This also has a nice advantage of unifying the OSS
community in terms of coredump handler. apport can handle things from
the core dumps that systemd generates, further on desktops.

  3. Employ a tiny helper script, as the default core dump handler, which
looks for specified programs such as "apport", "abrt", systemd-coredump"
and pipes to them, or pipes it to /var/crash, or /tmp during it's
absence. This does have the disadvantage of growing with it's own
  config, rather quickly.

That being said, I highly suggest option 2 be used in the upcoming
versions, and apport be a layer sitting on top of the coredumps
generated by systemd-coredumps by either hooking into it, or by watching
- it's folders. I've started to remove apport and switch to systemd-
- coredump in all my server images as well, as apport seems to mostly be
- more of a nuisance. However, this also makes it difficult to report to
- launchpad, as apport currently cannot readily take an existing core dump
- file and do the reporting (though I suppose this should be possible
- providing the right arguments?).
+ it's folders.

"Digging around i've found
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122116#c26;
which suggest a libcpdb removal: purged libcpdb-libs-common1 and
cpdb-backend-cups as dependant."

I can confirm that purging those two packages allows libreoffice to
start.

Document Foundation describes this bug
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122116#c26

The end of the bug report says that it is fixed in libreoffice v6.2.0.2.

Will disco be getting that version (or later of libreoffice) ?

[Bug 1692437] Re: Monitors on second GPU not working after upgrade to zesty

2019-02-01 Thread Richard Eames
I filmed my computer boot up to better show what happens. The right
monitor is on the integrated video card (the R7), and doesn't show
anything initially. The center and left monitor turn on and mirror each
other during boot, and show grub and most of the kernel and systemd
messages, then at some point all output is sent to the right monitor. I
believe the systemd log says something along the lines of "detecting all
video cards" at that point.

[Bug 1784152] Re: i2c_hid_get_input floods system logs

2019-02-01 Thread Yan Mosyagin
That's a good point but unfortunately unloading and reloading the module
doesn't stop the messages from being produced on my system. Also, until
the issue is fixed, my aim was exactly to filter unnecessary events from
syslog to avoid bloated log files (kern.log and syslog) and unnecessary
events since it was the biggest and probably the only real symptom for
me.

[Bug 1813403] Re: Better kernel core dump defaults

2019-02-01 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
** Description changed:

  Currently,

  `$ sysctl kernel.core_pattern`

  gives

  `kernel.core_pattern = |/usr/share/apport/apport %p %s %c %d %P`

This should be considered a bug, since a minimal version of ubuntu
(server, core etc) and more notoriously when run from containers, this
will just error out, with no core dump being produced, due to the
absence of apport. Adding to the problem, is with container where you

[Bug 1814342] [NEW] fc-match does not return the correct font

2019-02-01 Thread Ron Koerner
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 18.10 the command `fc-match monospace:bold` returns

DejaVuSansMono.ttf: "DejaVu Sans Mono" "Book"

instead of

DejaVuSansMono-Bold.ttf: "DejaVu Sans Mono" "Bold"

This works correctly on Ubuntu 18.04.1 which is using fontconfig 2.12.6,
whereas 18.10 uses 2.13.0.
I compiled 2.13.1 from source and just installed libfontconfig.so.1.12.0.

This solves the problem.

While it does not sound much, this bug also causes Java 8 AWT/Swing font
rendering to be uglier than it has to be. Instead of "DejaVu Sans Mono
Bold" and emboldened version of "DejaVu Sans Mono" is used which has a
different size, which goes counter to the notion of a "monospace" font.

[Bug 1814069] Re: kernel linux-image-4.15.0-44 not booting on Hyperv Server 2008R2

Confirming for both 4.15.0-44 and 4.15.0-45 on Windows Server 2012
Hyper-V. For now I've forced GRUB to boot 4.15.0-43.

The guest is Ubuntu Server 18.04.1. FWIW, the VM has 2 virtual cores and
dynamically-allocated memory of up to 6144 MB.

I'm only able to view the boot process in Hyper-V's "Virtual Machine
Connection" console, which has no scroll buffer. When boot failure
occurs, I can see the last few lines of an error trace in the console,
but I've been unable to capture the full trace. No information regarding
the boot ends up in the system logs--i.e., journalctl doesn't recognize
the failed boot attempts at all.

[Bug 1814339] [NEW] package mysql-server-5.7 5.7.25-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2019-02-01 Thread Klaus Bueck
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I initially setup my system with ubuntu 14.04 (some years ago)
There I (obviously) installed mysql and worked with it
Later I upgraded to ubuntu 16.04

But the configuration etc. seems to still be there in /etc/mysql

I decided to install mysql via:
https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-mysql-on-ubuntu-16-04
namely:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mysql-server
mysql_secure_installation

The error here occurs at:
sudo apt-get install mysql-server

[Bug 1803031] Re: erro: cannot find EFI directory.

2019-02-01 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Any user installing Ubuntu on UEFI systems and picking manual partitioning.
This leads to an installation config that cannot be completed due to the
missing partition not being detected until grub-installer runs at the end of
the install process

  [Test case]
+ The exact behavior will differ depending on the precise set of features
enabled in the system's firmware:
+
+ == Any firmware mode (BIOS, UEFI, UEFI w/ CSM), using automatic
+ partitioning (full disk) ==
+
+ 1) Boot to an install media
+ 2) At the partitioning screen, pick "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" or "Use
entire disk - Guided partitioning".
+ 3) Confirm all changes and begin the installation.
+
+ The user should see no user prompt, and system is bootable after
+ installation.
+
+ == System in UEFI, with or without CSM enabled ==
+
  1) Boot to an install media
  2) At the partitioning screen, pick "Something else" or "Manual partitioning".
  3) Create a single partition for /.
  4) Confirm all changes and begin the installation.

- The installer should immediately warn the user on UEFI that there is no
- EFI System partition and offer to go back to the partitioning screen.
+ The installer should immediately warn the user that there is no EFI
+ System partition and offer to go back to the partitioning screen. Once
+ the EFI System partition is present, the user is not shown the prompt
+ and the installation completes successfully. The system is bootable.

Without the fix, the installation process happily continues and ends in
  a crash in grub-installer.
+
+ == System in BIOS mode, manual partitioning without ESP ==
+
+ 1) Boot to an install media
+ 2) At the partitioning screen, pick "Something else" or "Manual partitioning".
+ 3) Create a single partition for /.
+ 4) Confirm all changes and begin the installation.
+
+ Install should complete successfully, without prompting the user (an ESP
+ is not strictly required for booting).
+

[Bug 1771858] Re: /snap/bin not in default PATH for units, snapd should ship system-environment-generators to inject /snap/bin into $PATH

2019-02-01 Thread Jon Wedaman
Just noticed what might be a regression from this fix.
`/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin` are now missing from unit on newest
ubuntu bionic ami (us-east-1: ami-012fd5eb46f56731f)

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dpkg-query -W systemd
systemd 237-3ubuntu10.11
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo systemd-run /usr/bin/env
Running as unit: run-r6c6668bf9774455dbb628d2d79de5949.service
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ journalctl -e | grep PATH=
Feb 01 20:46:24 ubuntu env[6051]: PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/snap/bin

The prior ami (us-east-1: ami-0b86cfbff176b7d3a) doesn't have this
issue. So I checked for differences. I noticed that if I remove
`/usr/lib/systemd/system-environment-generators/snapd-env-generator` and
reboot then I get better output:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo systemd-run /usr/bin/env
Running as unit: run-r6c6668bf9774455dbb628d2d79de5949.service
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ journalctl -e | grep PATH=
Feb 01 20:51:44 ubuntu env[3337]:
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin

[Bug 1803031] Re: erro: cannot find EFI directory.

2019-02-01 Thread Steve Langasek
Hello Vinicius, or anyone else affected,

Accepted partman-efi into bionic-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-
efi/71ubuntu2.2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-bionic. In either case, without details of
your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.
