[Bug 1814830] Re: recent linux versions 44 and 45 do not start up
That the old version of the boot loader was not replaced might be an oversight in the updater or a feature for those systems which where installed a very long time ago. (If you are interested, see [1]). Reading [2] it sounds like it is necessary to remove menu.lst before it will get re-generated again: * sudo mv /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.save * sudo update-grub If menu.lst is not re-created by the update-grub command you will have to rename the saved copy back, otherwise you should be ok. [Bug 1785171] Re: Intel I219-V Ethernet Interface on Ubuntu Linux Using e1000e Driver keeps Dropping Internet Connection
I can confirm that this bug exists on 18.04 and 18.10 on a Intel NUC 8i3BEH (with latest BIOS, 0056). After a few seconds after boot, the RTT spikes to well over 1s and makes the system unusable. Since changing the power management settings seems to solve this issue, i tried various options: Disable intel_pstate, change the governor to performance, forcing full frequency, etc. without luck. However, disabling PCIe ASPM *in the BIOS* solved the issue for me - at the price of a somewhat higher power consumption (around +5W). Please note that using pcie_aspm=off in the kernel command line (linux-image-4.18.0-14-generic) *did not work*. [Bug 1813657] Re: 4.18.0-14 doesn't boot past grub
@P.D. That's surprising. In that case, it means the offending commit is "325f8e18c8ac drm/i915/ringbuffer: Delay after EMIT_INVALIDATE for gen4/gen5". I was expecting the offending commit to be "d8370b8fbadf drm/i915/execlists: Force write serialisation into context image vs execution" because that appears to have been identified upstream as causing a regression with symptoms similar to what you're experiencing (the regression has upstream commit ID 987abd5c62f9 and the fix for it is https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=cf66b8a0ba142fbd1bf10ac8f3ae92d1b0cb7b8f ) I had built a kernel with the upstream fix for you to test and was expecting it would fix your problem. Do you mind trying it anyway to confirm that it does NOT fix your problem? [Bug 1813833] Re: User without read permission on cron.allow can execute crontab
Hello Brandon, I wasn't able to use an untrusted user account to induce this behaviour. So, I'm making this bug public so that more people can be made aware of the misconfiguration that is being encouraged. It's unfortunate that the providers of this advice never actually tested it themselves. It's unfortunate that the cron manpages don't detail proper permissions for these files. It's unfortunate that crontab(1) doesn't perform this access control check while it has root privileges. It's perhaps most especially unfortunate that this check isn't actually performed by cron(8) at all -- a user listed in /etc/cron.deny isn't actually denied running cron jobs, but is denied managing cron jobs. Existing configurations would keep working. (Probably this is not news to most sysadmins but I'd long since forgotten this detail.) So now, the question is what remediation do we take? - adjusting cron(8) feels like a good idea but would take a fair chunk of effort to not be silly about the implementation. It might also break configurations using the 'gatekeeping' feature of crontab(1). - adjusting crontab(1). I'm not sure how much work this would take but feels like a good approach. - fixing the manpages to describe the correct permissions. This feels like a good idea regardless of changes we may make to crontab(1). [Bug 1813657] Re: 4.18.0-14 doesn't boot past grub
@P.D.: I also have the eighth (and final) kernel almost ready for you. It is based on commit: 325f8e18c8ac drm/i915/ringbuffer: Delay after EMIT_INVALIDATE for gen4/gen5 and it should be available at: https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kmously/1813657/kernel-kmously-325f8e1-2dRL in about 40 minutes. This should be the last kernel that you'll need to test for bisection. I think the problematic change is "drm/i915/execlists: Force write serialisation into context image vs execution". This can be confirmed by confirming that the eighth kernel (which does not have that change) boots fine. [Bug 1813833] [NEW] User without read permission on cron.allow can execute crontab
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** You have been subscribed to a public security bug by Seth Arnold (seth-arnold): /etc/cron.allow is meant to list the users who are allowed to execute crontab. For a user who is not listed, the output should be: $ crontab -e You (ubuntu) are not allowed to use this program (crontab) See crontab(1) for more information When /etc/cron.allow is not readable by that user, though, it's treated as though the file doesn't exist at all: $ sudo chmod o-r /etc/cron.allow $ crontab -e crontab: installing new crontab The obvious workaround is to ensure that /etc/cron.allow is world readable, but unfortunately there are a lot of security tools and documentation out there that explicitly require both using cron.allow and also setting the permission on cron-related files to 600. Examples include https://secscan.acron.pl/ubuntu1604/5/1/8 and the CIS Level 1 benchmark for Ubuntu. The result of this bug is that a sysadmin attempting to lock down cron by following standard security guidance will fail to do so. ** Affects: cron (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- User without read permission on cron.allow can execute crontab https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1813833 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1811248] Re: systemd--networkd mounts denied for lxc guest
https://github.com/lxc/lxd/issues/5439#issuecomment-461257784 > The fix in LXD is only partial because there's currently no safe way for us to fix that for privileged containers due to an apparmor parser bug that the AppArmor team is still working on. So we've made the change only to the unprivileged policy for now as the AppArmor bug isn't causing too much damage in that case. There's no such distinction in profile in LXC, so putting those same lines in the LXC policy would allow every user to bypass all mount protections, which isn't acceptable from a security point of view. So the LXC fix is effectively blocked on the AppArmor security bug being resolved first. ** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1813622 systemd-resolved, systemd-networkd and others fail to start in lxc container with v240 systemd ** Bug watch added: LXD bug tracker #5439 https://github.com/lxc/lxd/issues/5439 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1811248 Title: systemd--networkd mounts denied for lxc guest To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apparmor/+bug/1811248/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This is a LXD commit, not a LXC one. Here's the tail end of strace output (run on the same terminal as dash, to force intermingling of syscall output and terminal output), showing dash handling a write(1) without trouble, and checking for completed jobs after I hit enter several times: geteuid() = 1000 getegid() = 1000 rt_sigaction(SIGINT, NULL, {sa_handler=SIG_DFL, sa_mask=[], sa_flags=0}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGINT, {sa_handler=0x55a82089e200, sa_mask=~[RTMIN RT_1], sa_flags=SA_RESTORER, sa_restorer=0x7fd3be19df20}, NULL, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGQUIT, NULL, {sa_handler=SIG_DFL, sa_mask=[], sa_flags=0}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGQUIT, {sa_handler=SIG_IGN, sa_mask=~[RTMIN RT_1], sa_flags=SA_RESTORER, sa_restorer=0x7fd3be19df20}, NULL, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGTERM, NULL, {sa_handler=SIG_DFL, sa_mask=[], sa_flags=0}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGTERM, {sa_handler=SIG_IGN, sa_mask=~[RTMIN RT_1], sa_flags=SA_RESTORER, sa_restorer=0x7fd3be19df20}, NULL, 8) = 0 openat(AT_FDCWD, "/dev/tty", O_RDWR)= 3 fcntl(3, F_DUPFD, 10) = 10 close(3)= 0 fcntl(10, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0 ioctl(10, TIOCGPGRP, [23306]) = 0 getpgrp() = 23306 rt_sigaction(SIGTSTP, NULL, {sa_handler=SIG_DFL, sa_mask=[], sa_flags=0}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGTSTP, {sa_handler=SIG_IGN, sa_mask=~[RTMIN RT_1], sa_flags=SA_RESTORER, sa_restorer=0x7fd3be19df20}, NULL, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGTTOU, NULL, {sa_handler=SIG_DFL, sa_mask=[], sa_flags=0}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGTTOU, {sa_handler=SIG_IGN, sa_mask=~[RTMIN RT_1], sa_flags=SA_RESTORER, sa_restorer=0x7fd3be19df20}, NULL, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGTTIN, NULL, {sa_handler=SIG_DFL, sa_mask=[], sa_flags=0}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGTTIN, {sa_handler=SIG_DFL, sa_mask=~[RTMIN RT_1], sa_flags=SA_RESTORER, sa_restorer=0x7fd3be19df20}, NULL, 8) = 0 setpgid(0, 23308) = 0 ioctl(10, TIOCSPGRP, [23308]) = 0 wait4(-1, 0x7ffcdf89717c, WNOHANG|WSTOPPED, NULL) = -1 ECHILD (No child processes) write(2, "$ ", 2$ ) = 2 read(0, Message from sarnold@hunt on pts/13 at 17:41 ... hello EOF "\n", 8192) = 1 wait4(-1, 0x7ffcdf89717c, WNOHANG|WSTOPPED, NULL) = -1 ECHILD (No child processes) write(2, "$ ", 2$ ) = 2 read(0, "\n", 8192) = 1 wait4(-1, 0x7ffcdf89717c, WNOHANG|WSTOPPED, NULL) = -1 ECHILD (No child processes) write(2, "$ ", 2$ ) = 2 read(0, ^C0x55a820aa9a60, 8192) = ? [Bug 1814983] [NEW] zfs poor sustained read performance from ssd pool

[Bug 1652822] Re: grub efi doesn't install fs module needed to access root
On 19.04 I still get my grub.cfg broken by normal updates. Not by kernel updates, and not by running update-grub. But there is some package that whenever that package is updated, part of the update process generates a new grub.cfg, and it's a broken one because it makes a bad assumption somewhere. I eneded up writing myself a little "check_grub_efi_xfs" script that I run any time I think I saw anything about grub fly by when I run "apt upgrade", or, any time grub gets screwed up I run it after I get myself back in. It's only about 3 lines of code that actually matters, but writes a lot of stuff to the screen just so you don't have ANY worries about it what it did and if your boot files are currently ok before you shut down. Ideally this should run just before shutdown on every single shutdown. Then you'd never have to worry about it. The only way you'd miss an update again is if you had an ungraceful shutdown after an apt upgrade that included a grub packege update. But despite being a unix and linux admin for over 20 years, I have so far utterly failed to get systemd to do such a simple task. If someone can show me exactly how to write a freaking unit file that does that, I'd be pretty grateful. Just to refresh, the issue here is, it's possible to install ubuntu with xfs root fs to a machine that already has a factory Win10 install and boot files in a factory EFI partition, without having to make any special /boot partition. All you really need is to place a copy of xfs.mod onto the EFI partition, which is a FAT filesystem that grub already reads files from at boot. And edit the initial grub.cfg that's in the EFI filesystem so that it loads xfs.mod from there too. Then everything else is fine. The rest of /boot can be in "/", and "/" can be xfs. This allowed me to degfrag and resize the factory Win10 without wiping and reinstalling, install linux in the freed space, with xfs root fs, and no other partition or filesystem changes needed. I can boot back and forth between the original Win10 install or linux with no problem. It didn't break Win10 booting. It's a perfectly valid and "legal" arrangement, and anything that automatically writes grub config files should have to allow for this possibility without breaking it. Screen capture from a run of this fixup script, just after today's apt upgrade which broke my grub.cfg once again. This is today 2019 02 26, so I don't know where the supposed fix is. It's definitely not yet in 19.04 or in grub-* 2.02+dfsg1-5ubuntu11 So this run shows the actions when it detects that it actually has something to do. Most times, it will detect that it doesn't have to do anything, and it will take no action those times. This, and the script itself (attached) should serve as detailed documentation of the admittedly uncommon configuration, and exactly how it gets broken, and exactly how it gets un-broken. ---snip--- root@negre:~# check_grub_efi_xfs Checking for broken grub + efi + xfs config... Re: [Bug 1814830] Re: recent linux versions 44 and 45 do not start up
I observe that menu.lst is used here for starting Linux. And I assume that when the 'Software Updater' sends me this, it is needed and is not obsolete. My policy is to use the most recent kernel update, provided that I can get it working. 'sudo update-grub': I have done this and it writes a new grub.cfg ; however, menu.lst is not modified. Finally: I have (manually is the word?) modified menu.lst and added an 'initrd' line in the menu for the 45 kernel update, and now Linux does start with this latest kernel update. Fine. But the question is still, how to get the Linux system or the Software Updater to create a correct and sound menu.lst automatically? Thanks so far. [Bug 1813657] Re: 4.18.0-14 doesn't boot past grub
@Jan Schnackenberg: Thanks for that feedback and helpful and analysis. The Spectre-related change looked suspicious at first. However, if that was indeed the cause of your issue, then it's almost certainly a different issue than the one described in this bug report and experienced by @P.D., since at this point in the bisection, we've eliminated Spectre-related changes from the pool of possible culprits. In fact, at this point it's highly likely that the problem is a regression in the Intel i915 driver. This matches with the stacktraces in all the bug reports so far, and also coincides with a few i915 changes on which we're narrowing in in the bisection process. @Jan Schnackenberg, you are encouraged to try the test kernels that I've linked above and report your results. Your problem is almost certainly the same problem described in this bug (and if it's not, we can continue that investigation as part of another bug). As for the required .deb files, you can forgo the -headers files, so the following should be sufficient: linux-image-unsigned-4.18.0-14-generic linux-modules-4.18.0-14-generic linux-modules-extra-4.18.0-14-generic Thanks. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1813657 Title: 4.18.0-14 doesn't boot past grub To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1813657/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1811098] Re: [SRU] ceilometer writing snmp credentials to log file
A CVE can be requested by anyone for any defect. The OpenStack VMT doesn't generally request CVEs for projects it doesn't oversee, but we have a brief overview of what we'd generally recommend putting in MITRE's CVE Request form documented at https://security.openstack.org /vmt-process.html#send-cve-request if you're interested in following a similar process. Note that for an already-public report like this one, there are fewer bits to worry about (the process documentation attempts to call out the difference between what you'd do for still private embargoed reports vs already public reports). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1811098 Title: [SRU] ceilometer writing snmp credentials to log file To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ceilometer/+bug/1811098/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
