[Bug 1827884] Re: Boot problems after upgrade to kernel 4.15.0-48 (18.04.2LTS/i386)

2019-05-12 Thread Michael
Update:
HP Laptop: I have upgraded BIOS on the HP6710b laptop to F16, which included
upgrade of video BIOS. It had no effect on the boot behaviour.

ASUS Laptop: I have realised that I CAN get the grub menu - its just
that the screen is black and I can´t see it. (ie: I can navigate the
grub menu using arrow/enter keys and select various options from memory
of where they are in the menu tree). Behaviour is essentially the same
as HP laptop - it will only boot successfully into 4.15.0-48 after a
previous failed boot. A first boot fails.

Note that I tried a fresh install from the mini.iso on the asus laptop.
Boot problem is the same on a fresh install of 4.15.0-48, not just
upgrading from earlier version through software updater.

Ubunutu-bug output of the asus filed a new bug report Bug #1828764

[Bug 1828345] Re: [possible regression] kernel BUG at [...]/linux-lts-xenial-4.4.0/net/core/skbuff.c:1207

2019-05-12 Thread Peter Struhar
hello Tore,

yes, you are right, 144. In the meantime, we experienced this also on
second system running 5 days before kerne panic, so in case some dumps
would be needed, we can probably provide those (if we are pointed to
procedure how to generate them). Now it is running 143 but we can switch
it also with previous panicking system to 146 for test.

thanks
s.

[Bug 1828764] [NEW] Boot problems fresh install of kernel 4.15.0-48 18.04.2LTS i386

2019-05-12 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Duplicate of Bug#1827884

Kernel version 4.15.0-48 fails to boot. Requires a second boot after
forced shutdown to boot successfully.

Morevover, the screen is black whilst in grub menu during the ´second´
boot, but the grub menu is still active and navigable despite not
appearing on the screen

This is the ubuntu-bug report generated for my asus W1N laptop.
Same issue was experienced on a different laptop HP6710b, previously filed as
bug#1827884

[Bug 1828763] [NEW] Cannot build kernel 4.15.0-48.51 due to an in-source-tree ZFS module.

2019-05-12 Thread Hyeonho Seo
Public bug reported:

I tried to build a kernel 4.15.0-48.51 that cloned from the Ubuntu
kernel git (x86_64-generic flavour).

commit c50532b9d7b623ff98aeaf0b848e58adae54ca75 (HEAD -> master, tag:
Ubuntu-4.15.0-48.51, origin/master, origin/HEAD)
Author: Andrea Righi
Date:   Tue Apr 2 18:31:55 2019 +0200

UBUNTU: Ubuntu-4.15.0-48.51

Signed-off-by: Andrea Righi

1. Build a kernel image with 'zfs_enable' flag set as false.
2. Build SPL/ZFS modules independently by make command (debug purpose;
DECLARE_EVENT_CLASS() enabled).

But 'make' was always failed at the same point, 'zfs/module/zfs/trace.c'
(as seem as below).

I tried to debug this issue with myself, and found something intriguing.
In 'zfs/include/sys/trace_dmu.h', the failed code accessing 'tx_dirty_delayed'
from 'dmu_tx_t' (which same as 'struct dmu_tx').

DECLARE_EVENT_CLASS(zfs_delay_mintime_class,
TP_PROTO(dmu_tx_t *tx, uint64_t dirty, uint64_t min_tx_time),
TP_ARGS(tx, dirty, min_tx_time),
TP_STRUCT__entry(
__field(uint64_t,   tx_txg)
__field(uint64_t,   tx_lastsnap_txg)
__field(uint64_t,   tx_lasttried_txg)
__field(boolean_t,  tx_anyobj)
__field(boolean_t,  tx_dirty_delayed)
__field(hrtime_t,   tx_start)
__field(boolean_t,  tx_wait_dirty)
__field(int,tx_err)
__field(uint64_t,   min_tx_time)
__field(uint64_t,   dirty)
),
TP_fast_assign(
__entry->tx_txg = tx->tx_txg;
__entry->tx_lastsnap_txg= tx->tx_lastsnap_txg;
__entry->tx_lasttried_txg   = tx->tx_lasttried_txg;
__entry->tx_anyobj  = tx->tx_anyobj;
__entry->tx_dirty_delayed   = tx->tx_dirty_delayed;
__entry->tx_start   = tx->tx_start;
__entry->tx_wait_dirty  = tx->tx_wait_dirty;
__entry->tx_err = tx->tx_err;
__entry->dirty  = dirty;
__entry->min_tx_time= min_tx_time;
),
TP_printk("tx { txg %llu lastsnap_txg %llu tx_lasttried_txg %llu "
"anyobj %d dirty_delayed %d start %llu wait_dirty %d err %i "
"} dirty %llu min_tx_time %llu",
__entry->tx_txg, __entry->tx_lastsnap_txg,
__entry->tx_lasttried_txg, __entry->tx_anyobj,
__entry->tx_dirty_delayed, __entry->tx_start,
__entry->tx_wait_dirty, __entry->tx_err,
__entry->dirty, __entry->min_tx_time)
);

But, implementation of 'strcut dmu_tx' doesn't contain 'tx_dirty_delayed' (in
zfs/include/sys/dmu_tx.h)

struct dmu_tx {
/*
 * No synchronization is needed because a tx can only be handled
 * by one thread.
 */
list_t tx_holds; /* list of dmu_tx_hold_t */
objset_t *tx_objset;
struct dsl_dir *tx_dir;
struct dsl_pool *tx_pool;
uint64_t tx_txg;
uint64_t tx_lastsnap_txg;
uint64_t tx_lasttried_txg;
txg_handle_t tx_txgh;

[Bug 1827884] Re: Boot problems after upgrade to kernel 4.15.0-48 (18.04.2LTS/i386)

2019-05-12 Thread Michael
apport information

** Description changed:

  NOTE: Boot problems on TWO different laptops after Software Updater
  updated to kernel 4.15.0-48

  Both laptops running Ubuntu 18.04.2LTS i386/32bit with Xubuntu desktop.
  Both fresh installs from minimal CD in early April, originally kernel
  0.4.15.0-47, both working fine.

  Bug report filed on THIS MACHINE:
  HP Compag 6710b, Intel Core2 Duo T7100 @ 1.8GHz, RAM 4GB, with Intel
integrated graphics controller GM965/GL960 (with kernel command line parameter
¨video=SVIDEO-1:d¨)

  SYMPTOM:
  4.15.0-48 requires a second ´recovery´ boot to get it up and running.
  Will not boot properly after a normal shutdown - screen goes funny and it
hangs
  Does boot successfully after a hard shutdown - detects improper shutdown,
loads grub menu, then boot successfully

  Boot problem appeared after update from kernel version 4.15.0-47 to 4.15.0-48
  Problem occurs in 4.15.0-48 kernel, but not in 4.15.0-47 (which still boots
normally after a normal shutdown)

  OTHER MACHINE:
  Even older!!! ASUS W1N Pentium M banias 1.7gHz, 1.5GB RAM, ATI Mobility
Radeon 9600 GPU. Running with command line parameter "forcepae".
  SYMPTOM:
  Won't boot at all.
  Was working fine under 4.15.0-47 as originally installed, until software
updater installed 4.15.0-48. Now it won't boot (hangs, black screen), and I
can't even get into the grub menu to try the older kernel.

  More Info on what I've already tried for troubleshooting (on the HP6710b) is
outlined in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/680486

  Happy to provide more info if needed, but I'm just an end user user and
  new to Linux, so will be on a learning curve at this end. (and
  apologies in advance if this a user problem, and not an actual bug).
  Thanks
