Thanks, Dylan

I installed the pdftk package from the disco 19.04 repository and ran
one of my "stock" scripts against a pdf. It worked perfectly. This
doesn't constitute a full system test, but satisfies me.

Given the bug was for the package being missing, rather than any
specific broken behaviour when installed, I reckon you can close it as
fixed.

Regards,

Brian

I installed okular on Ubuntu 17.10 via snap (“sudo snap install
okular”). The okular snap seems to use “strict” confinement and is thus
unable to access files outside the user’s home directory even for
reading. However, for a “viewer”-type application like okular, this is
very problematic:

– When downloading a file (e.g. PDF) in a browser like Firefox and
choosing to open the file (instead of saving it somewhere in the home
directory), the browser will typically place the file in /tmp/ and then
open it using the default viewer for that file type. Since /tmp/ is
outside the user’s home directory, okular is unable to open the file.

– When opening documentation which is installed to system directories
(e.g. /usr/share/…) along with its corresponding application, okular is
likewise unable to open the documentation files for viewing. For
example, the “texdoc” program for the TeX typesetting system looks up
the documentation for a specified package (typically in PDF format) and
runs the default (PDF) viewer to show the documentation. This fails if
the okular snap application is set as the default PDF viewer.

– Any files on mounted file systems, such as external storage (USB
drives, SD cards, external hard drives…), network shares, etc., cannot
be viewed with okular.

Attempting to open any such files results in a dialog with the following
error message: “Could not open file:///path/to/file”. This does not
provide any explanation for the reason of the failure.

Um, as I said, on Ubuntu 17.10 using “sudo snap install okular”. So from
whatever source “snap” uses by default on a standard Ubuntu
installation.

I’ve also checked that the .snap file I got through “snap install okular” is
identical to the one which can be downloaded here:
https://uappexplorer.com/snap/ubuntu/okular

The snap package lists “contact: https://www.kde.org”, which is why I
opened a bug report here. If this is not an “official” okular snap
package, then who is responsible for it?

In this bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=378130
the reporter was in the same situation (“sudo snap install okular” on Ubuntu)
and it seems that there was no problem resolving it at this level.

Please edit /etc/modproble.d/alsa-base.conf

[Bug 1827822] Re: kernel null pointer dereference

2019-05-17 Thread Ken Corbin
No I can not reproduce this. Which is not that surprising, deep kernel
bugs are unlikely to be correlated with anything the user is doing at
the UI level. System is still crashing sporadically, they do not occur
on any of my other systems, nor did they happen on this system before a
certain date, which inclines me to claim that they were not happening
with older kernels.

It did lock up again this morning. Unfortunately the last 5 minutes of
the syslog file were corrupted and contained no useful information, so I
could not tell you if it was the same problem or not.

[Bug 1829588] [NEW] make it easy to add proposed; help text outdated

2019-05-17 Thread Seth Arnold
Public bug reported:

I want to do some SRU testing but I have to look up how to add the
-proposed lines to apt sources every time I want to do this task. The
wiki page for it is pretty verbose and includes text like: "Replace
"xenial" with "trusty", "vivid", "utopic", "precise", or "lucid"
depending on which release you are on. "

Adding -proposed should be as easy as running:

sudo add-apt-repository proposed

But this doesn't work:
$ sudo add-apt-repository proposed
Error: 'proposed' invalid

The help text includes a bunch of examples of things that users almost
never need to do any more:

$ add-apt-repository -h
[...]
  Examples:
apt-add-repository 'deb http://myserver/path/to/repo stable myrepo'
apt-add-repository 'http://myserver/path/to/repo myrepo'
apt-add-repository 'https://packages.medibuntu.org free non-free'
apt-add-repository http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
apt-add-repository ppa:user/repository
apt-add-repository ppa:user/distro/repository
apt-add-repository multiverse

https://packages.medibuntu.org is now owned by a commerce site, or squatter, or
something similar. It also fails certificate validation. This should be removed.

http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/ has precise through utopic. Maybe
we shouldn't remove this yet, but someday we may want to revisit this
one.

It'd be great to have examples of adding proposed, universe, security,
updates, etc.

Maybe it'd be nice to put a reference to whatever tool would also enable
ESM.

Thanks

It is so good to hear from anyone on this problem, so I welcome your
"late reply"!

My laptop runs ubuntu studio 19.04, but studio stopped including the
linux-generic package many releases ago.

By the way, /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-7265D-29.ucode is the latest on this
19.04 disco system, dated 18 May 2018, so I have confirmed it as broken
with at least two earlier ubuntu releases and very many kernels.

I suppose we should wish iwlwifi-7265D-29 a happy birthday???

In order to answer your question, there is no reason why I cannot
install it, so I will try to find time in the next few days...
unfortunately I have a broken desktop and other work commitments which
need to be delivered using only this laptop, so I don't want to distract
myself and accidentally break something!

I'll get back to you in a day or two. I am very interested in the result
of the test.

Regards,

Brian

[Bug 1816394] Re: Ubuntu 19.04/19.10 qa:test - suspended system resumed without audio (fixed with pavucontrol toggle)

2019-05-17 Thread Chris Guiver
** Description changed:

+ Ubuntu 19.04 & 19.10 QA-testing
+ This has occurred on on 4 similar boxes; dell optiplex 755 (x2), 780 & 960
(using GNOME (ubuntu 19.04), XFCE (ubuntu-studio 19.04) & LXQt (lubuntu 19.04 &
19.10))
+ Last occurrence was d780 where a new bug was added; bug 1829494 to ensure
diagnostic info was added
+ For additional info please look at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1829494
+
+ - Original report follows
+
  Ubuntu 19.04 QA-Test (LIVE x86_64)

  Dell optiplex d755, (c2d-e8300, 8gb, Radeon HD 2400 PRO/XT)
Two dell displays, left is landscape, right is portrait

This live test had two packages added: `vim` & `ubuntu-restricted-
  extras`

  Background:
I added ubuntu-restricted-extras so I could run requested test on this system
which had me streaming videos from utube - it was required to get around H264
errors (vim because I can't cope with other editors & added `multiverse` to my
sources.

  Issue:
With firefox streaming ABC News 24 (local AU news) I suspended machine.
Waited
Awoke machine - everything resumed as expected .. Some circling was apparent
on firefox before picture resumed, however no sound.

I was unable to fix it using any tools installed - to fix I `sudo apt
install pavucontrol`, went to Configuration (or last tab) and
Profile=Off on the drop-down menu, then returned to Profile=AnalogStereo
Duplex. This is something I do on occasion for this machine on
installed system or other machines I use.

This is really a minor issue, & may not be an issue on an installed
system (though I come across it semi-regularly & just live with it). In
regular use I pause/stop sound & know this makes this almost a non-issue
(almost never happens when sound isn't playing).

[Bug 1820062] Re: LibreOffice Impress embed video problem (libreoffice-gtk3)

2019-05-17 Thread Marcus Tomlinson
Hi Gašper, thank you for the update.

The issue you're experiencing now really looks to be a separate problem
in my opinion. I think we can safely say that the gstreamer patch in
6.1.6 fixes the original bug.

Could you please submit a new bug for this breaking UI issue? Thanks!

[Bug 645404] Re: Support Private PPAs

2019-05-17 Thread Dan Streetman
@carlfk, can you elaborate on:

> deploy a private key (or similarly sensitive secret) file and a publicly
> readable script (apt-add-repository...) and it just runs, no browser,
> no user, no typing

for a private ppa, the script will only generate 3 files (e.g. for
ppa:ddstreet/private on disco):
1) /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ddstreet-ubuntu-private-disco.list
2) /etc/apt/auth.conf.d/ddstreet_ubuntu_private.conf
3) /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/ddstreet_ubuntu_private.gpg

you could just copy those directly to whatever system you want, and not
have to run anything at all on the system (besides 'sudo apt update' and
then upgrade/install). Are you asking for something different?

[Bug 1828749] Re: ifconfig dummy0 : Device not found

2019-05-17 Thread John Denker via ubuntu-bugs
I have conducted more investigation into the cause, resulting in a
significant restatement of the issue.

As far as this bug is concerned, it appears there has been no
regression, indeed no change in behavior in ifconfig (net-tools package)
or ifup (ifupdown package). However it could be argued that all along
they have not handled dummy devices very well.

The big change appears to be in modprobe (kmod package). As of xenial
it behaved the same is insmode (also kmod package) but as of bionic it
behaves differently. In particular, insmod tickles the device in such a
way that dummy0 comes into existence (in a down state) whereas bionic
modprobe leaves it nonexistent. (Higher-numbered devices such as dummy1
are nonexistent in all cases, when the module is newly installed.)

The "ip link add" command is fully capable of bringing a dummy device
into existence, but apparently neither ifconfig nor ifup has ever had
this capability. This is a problem for dummy1 (always) and, what's
worse, for dummy0 (as of bionic).

You can see the gory details by comparing the typescripts attached to
this comment (for xenial) and the next (for bionic).

So ... even though the change in behavior occurred in modprobe, it could
be argued that the new modprobe behavior is more logical, because it
treats dummy0 and dummy1 the same now. By the same token, since dummy1
was never handled well by ifconfig or ifup, it could be argued that the
best way to proceed would be to make those programs more robust. Crib
the code from "ip link add" to bring the device into existence when
appropriate.

[Bug 1782507] Re: LVM-based install name of the root filesystem is not pretty

2019-05-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
This isn't new, LVM-based installs have been showing this way for a
while:

The names are built this way AFAIK:

 -

Now, this gets transliterated to:
 --

... because of how devmapper works, it "escapes" dashed with a double
dash like that.

AFAICS, the naming is otherwise consistent. 'ubuntu' is the name of the
machine, and "vg-root" is the effective name of the LV; and both of
these are concatenated together with -- (as transliterated by
devmapper).

Do we want to fix this to make it prettier? I've updated the bug title
accordingly, it's question that we need to answer as a team
(Foundations) being responsible in general for the installer, etc.

** Summary changed:

- Mount location of root file system is not as expected
+ LVM-based install name of the root filesystem is not pretty

[Bug 1783597] Re: The disk-space-needed estimate doesn't account for the snaps

2019-05-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Maybe we want to also revise the minimal disk space calculations for
installers, in case there's a bit more space needed for preinstalled
snaps?

[Bug 1680245] Re: subiquity does not take in account existing partition

2019-05-17 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Hi Michael,

I see this hasn't been released (at least in 19.04.4 which I had on my
test install for 19.04); moving to rls-ee-incoming so we keep tracking
this feature work.

[Bug 1820062] Re: LibreOffice Impress embed video problem (libreoffice-gtk3)

2019-05-17 Thread Gašper Sedej
Hello.

Thanks for updates. Sorry for late reply - I needed to set up 19.04, my
daily drivers are 18.04 machines (which didn't include this update).

I tested on ubuntu 19.04. Enabled -purposed and upgraded libreoffice to "6.1.6"
The "gstreamer1.0-gtk3" did install.

So the current situation is that video plays correctly IF the video is
fully inside the slide.

If the video is a bit outside the slide or video is bigger than slide, when
pressing "play" button in right pane, libreoffice UI totally breaks.
Only the ~1/8 of window display content other space is white. If resizing the
window, the content gets even smaller.
Also when running the slideshow, it's broken.
I need to close impress and run it again.

Can someone else confirm similar behavior?

[Bug 1808951] Re: python3 + Fedora + SSL + wsgi nova deployment, nova api returns RecursionError: maximum recursion depth exceeded while calling a Python object

2019-05-17 Thread Jamon Camisso
I can confirm the python3-nova and associated dependencies from cloud-
archive:stein-proposed have stopped the errors like these ones form the
original report:

2018-12-18 07:41:55.364 26870 ERROR nova.api.openstack [Previous line repeated
280 more times]
2018-12-18 07:41:55.364 26870 ERROR nova.api.openstack RecursionError: maximum
recursion depth exceeded while calling a Python object

I tested on bionic using the PPA and whereas nova was not accepting any
requests before, now it works as expected.
