[Bug 1833713] Re: Metadata is broken with dpdk bonding, jumbo frames and metadata from qdhcp

2019-07-10 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi Liam,
all I can say about this area is that I heard from several others that MTU+Bond
was very broken in the past - I haven't heard an update on that for a while.
Thanks for trying 18.11.2 in that regard.

I've read through the case about but nothing obvious came up for me to
try or fix.

I think your intention (from your mail) to write to upstream about this
is absolutely the right approach. Please let me know here if you got
anything back that would help to consider to be added.

[Bug 1828495] Re: [KVM][CLX] CPUID_7_0_EDX_ARCH_CAPABILITIES is not enabled in VM.

2019-07-10 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
The series was merged in 3a1acf5d47295d22ffdae0982a2fd808b802a7da as a prep to
qemu 4.1.
But the changes are rather invasive and after a review I think for the SRU we
will not add them.

For example the changes around:
  "model runnability guarantees won't apply to unversioned CPU models anymore"
seems non backportable to me.
I agree it is the right path going forward to keep the proliferation of CPU
models under control and provide something like a "moving head" weakening the
runability guarantees that can be regained by fetching the exact versions via
alias-of.

But none of the old systems management stacks will be able to do so.
Yes there is [2] but I'm still scared in an SRU context to add that when it is
a valid (more effort but working) option to add model+flags for the time being.

And in addition the code for making the models versionable will be
another great set of backports with potential backport flaws added.

Hence at least for now my decision would be:
- make the features available at least to the last LTS (Bionic) which will reach
  LTS-1 for many (to admit not all) users via Ubuntu cloud archive
- do not backport the versioned CPU model changes (too much risk /
incompatibilities)
  - pro: no changes to the higher virt stack needed
  - pro: less regression risk for the SRUs
  - pro: the new security features will be available
  - con: security features must be enabled individually via feature flags

@Rafael that should match what you had prepared in your MPs already.
I'll create a PPA with your any my changes for general regression tests.

@Quaxlan - for the versioned CPUs an all that belongs to that context
I'd ask you to file a new bug. I expect that will be in qemu 4.1 (just
entered rc0) and a later (yet to be defined) libvirt version. Once all
of that has properly landed we can consider if we will pull it back into
Eoan (as long as it isn't released and under the SRU policy) OR if we
wait for these new features to properly arrive in the next Ubuntu
release being 20.04. Once you happen to know which libvirt version will
have the appropriate changes to properly tolerate and exploit what was
added to qemu via [1] (version and commits if you have both) let us know
there.

[Bug 1830243] Re: [19.10 FEAT] KVM: Secure Linux Boot Toleration - qemu

2019-07-10 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * s390x is about to add secure boot features which are implemented by a
+new IPL section
+
+ * Older qemu bootloaders for s390x will stumble over that IPL section and
+be unable to boot.
+
+ * Backport the changes from upstream that make qemu tolerate those
+sections (not the new feature of secure boot, just the avoidance of the
+guest crash on boot)
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Take a signed kernel on s390x (either the one from xnox in comment #19
+or use signtool to create one)
+ * Install that kernel in a guest of the qemu that is to be tested
+ * Run zipl with --secure 1 to write a secure boot section for sure
+ * With an unpatched qemu this would now fail to boot again
+ * Install the update to qemu and boot the guest, by skipping the
+"tolerated, but not supported" new section it works again.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * If any of the checks goes wrong we might affect booting of guests in a
+negative way. For example it might no more start or load a wrong
+kernel. But since the IPL records written by `zipl` are clearly
+specified that should hopefully not be the case here. The code added
+clearly only skips an additional section that didn't exist before.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+  * n/a
+
+ ---
+
  Secure boot enablement KVM.
  Will be made available with qemu 4.1

[Bug 1835968] Re: Regression in backported patch for openssl 1.1

2019-07-10 Thread Unit 193
Howdy,

So I got a bit of a simpler testcase worked out (though due to reasons,
it's not something I'd like to make fully public, can PM it) and it
ended up being 251b5be20d5b58c27490f44cdeb6e655f9be6f19 that was giving
me the trouble.

I also made an Eoan chroot and tried the test script, it worked like a
charm so this is limited to Bionic. That is to be expected though since
Eoan doesn't carry the commit.

[Bug 1516451] Re: check_disk plugin broken after upgrade to 15.10

2019-07-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
This looks similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/monitoring-plugins/+bug/1827159.

However, installing nagios-plugins in a fresh Xenial LXC container does
not appear sufficient to reproduce the bug:

1. There is no /sys/kernel/debug/tracing present on the system. Installing
perf-tools-unstable caused the directory to be created.
2. There is not a nagios user on the system. I created this manually, but
wonder if there is some third component that should be installed, that would
create this?
3. The directory in question is owned by 'nobody':
root@triage-xenial:~# ls -l /sys/kernel/debug/tracing
ls: cannot access '/sys/kernel/debug/tracing': Permission denied
root@triage-xenial:~# ls -l /sys/kernel
(...)
drwx--  36 nobody nogroup0 Jul 10 23:10 debug
(...)

It would be quite helpful to have a step-by-step test case that can be
invoked in a Xenial lxc container.

Has anyone checked that this same issue affects bionic or newer, or is
Xenial-specific?

[Bug 1835968] Re: Regression in backported patch for openssl 1.1

2019-07-10 Thread Unit 193
Howdy,

My apologies I never mentioned what version I was on. And I went from
2.5.1-1ubuntu1.2 to 2.5.1-1ubuntu1.4 it would seem.

I don't exactly have a minimal testcase since the error happened when
interacting with a smtpd.

As part of the openssl 1.1 upgrade, a couple patches were added to
ruby2.5. If you note the path I mentioned it's the embedded copy of
ruby/openssl that libruby2.5 ships. If you look at ruby2.5 now, Ubuntu
eoan carries a couple patches over what Debian has. Given the package
changelog, I would presume 3f6e30e53ce8050375955322e170612e1de099b1 is
the offending commit[0].

The diff I attached shows that Ubuntu also added
251b5be20d5b58c27490f44cdeb6e655f9be6f19 over what Debian has, I could
add that patch back to my system and see if I still am error free if
that'd help in any way.

If the mouse still moves then the problem is not likely to be in Xorg,
but would be in the shell itself ("i3").

Please repeat that command:

  apport-cli --hanging -P PID

where PID is the process ID of "i3". It should log a new bug, which may
require you copying and pasting a link to complete the new bug.

[Bug 1722256] Re: Wifi connection status icon shows a "?" question mark when connected

Sounds related, and maybe that's where the bug is. Although it's not an
Ubuntu-specific issue...

That said, I haven't seen this bug in a long time. If you do see it,
what release are you using?

[Bug 1835956] Re: Deleting "Input Sources" not in use, affects the ones in use.

2019-07-10 Thread josedorrego
I'm sorry, but I'm not sure if I understand what you mean by "not only
after adding but continuing after a session restart using the
indicator/keybindings and not the settings?"

Now I'm thinking maybe this is somehow related to the problem mentioned
before, that sometimes the "Input Source in use" indicator changes, but
the keyboard keeps behaving the same way.

I'll check the gnome-shell list to see if I can add any information to a
related bug, or maybe opening a new one.

Thanks.

[Bug 1836124] [NEW] I couldn't interact with the screenlock

2019-07-10 Thread Seth Arnold
Public bug reported:

Hello, I use i3lock to lock my screen. systemd starts gnome-screensaver
when I suspend my laptop because I haven't figured out how to turn that
off yet.

Most of the time this is no big deal, I just have to unlock twice the
five or six times a year I suspend my laptop.

Today, however, I couldn't actually interact with the gnome-screensaver
lock screen:

- I resumed my laptop
- I unlocked the already-running i3lock
- The gnome-screensaver was running, showed the correct time in the center of
the 'titlebar', showed my user name in the right side of the titlebar, and the
mouse moved around fine.
- I blindly typed my password and hit enter
- The mouse pointer turned to a spinner for 20~40 seconds
- The mouse pointer could move around, but couldn't interact with any screen
elements
- ctrl+alt+f1 etc worked fine to change virtual consoles

I was only able to use my X11 session after manually killing the gnome-
screensaver process from a shell.

Thanks

Hmm. The process I killed was most definitely gnome-screensaver.

It might have been running in an LXD instance. This is strange.

[Bug 1835863] Re: Screens do not stay off when blanking

2019-07-10 Thread Enigma
I'd point my finger a the amdgpu driver in that case. Unplugging the
monitor in question did the trick (allowed system to blank properly).
The cable is definitely good & the connection ports on both ends should
be fine. This particular system is dual booted into Windows 10 where
this is a non-issue.

The keyboard has always been wonky (frequently it doesn't get
initialized and has to be unplugged and plugged in again). I left it
plugged in to run the test & the system was not adversely affected.

The same amdgpu is plugged into two monitors:

[1] monitor with issue (straight HDMI <> HDMI) FreeSync compatible
[2] monitor that works fine (DP on gpu converted to HDMI) non-Free-Sync

Makefile reports that stage3.lds is being given twice. This patch fixes
the issue to make stage 3 compilation to work in newer binutils.

Sorry for that. Commenting here just to explain binutil commits that
caused the issue to be discovered.

[Bug 1835968] Re: Regression in backported patch for openssl 1.1

2019-07-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Also, the title you selected for the bug, "Regression in backported
patch for openssl 1.1" suggests you suspect this relates to the recent
openssl 1.1.1 changes, however I'm unclear on how that would relate to
encoding issues in ruby, so it would help if you could elaborate on your
suspicions there.

[Bug 1835968] Re: Regression in backported patch for openssl 1.1

2019-07-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks for flagging this.

Version 2.5.1-1ubuntu1.4 matches to what's currently carried in 18.04 so
am guessing you're on that release. What ruby2.5 version did you
upgrade from? (Check your /var/log/apt/*.log files.)

Also, please provide a minimal test case to reproduce the bug. I.e.
something like:

"""
$ apt-get -y install ruby2.5
$ ruby
print "Hello world"

^D
Error: incompatible character encodings: ASCII-8BIT and UTF-8
"""

[Bug 1835929] Re: Web interface fails on ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2019-07-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Reviewing changes between the bionic and eoan versions, I notice they've
changed the default access:

backuppc (3.3.2-1) unstable; urgency=low
  * debian/apache.conf:
+ Only grant access from localhost by default (as by default HTTPS is
  not enforced). Mention that in NEWS.Debian.

and access permissions on the cgi-bin directory:

-rules: install --mode=4750 index.cgi debian/backuppc/usr/lib/backuppc/cgi-bin
+rules: install --mode=755 index.cgi debian/backuppc/usr/lib/backuppc/cgi-bin

This may improve the situation a little, although the problem of the cgi
script not getting handled as cgi remains. For security conditions,
this would need to adhere to ubuntu's policy on enabling cgi-bin on
installation.

Updating documentation is a good idea - suggestions would be welcomed.

[Bug 1835929] Re: Web interface fails on ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2019-07-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
I reproduced similar behavior on eoan with the same steps.

Here's the warnings that displayed during the install on eoan:

  adduser: Warning: The home directory `/var/lib/backuppc' does not belong to
the user you are currently creating.
  ...
  dpkg-statoverride: warning: deprecated --force option; use --force-all instead
  ...
  To activate the new configuration, you need to run:
systemctl restart apache2
  Your MPM seems to be threaded. Selecting cgid instead of cgi.
  Enabling module cgid.

I did not do the `a2disconf serve-cgi-bin` step, only `systemctl restart
apache2`, it came up ok in lynx.

[Bug 1835929] Re: Web interface fails on ubuntu 18.04 LTS

2019-07-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
$ lxc exec bionic-19-032-1 -- bash
$ uname -a
Linux bionic-19-032-1 4.15.0-54-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jun 24 10:55:24 UTC
2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=18.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=bionic
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS"

$ apt-get -y install backuppc
$ apt-get -y install lynx

### Reset password to 'password' or whatever
$ htpasswd /etc/backuppc/htpasswd backuppc

$ lynx bionic-19-032-1
This prompts for basic auth, entered:
  username: backuppc
  password: password

This then shows binary garbage, starting with "ELF>@@8 88 8@..."

Opening the lxc container's network in firefox also prompts for auth,
and then displays a dialog:

-
"You have chosen to open:

  which is: application/octet-stream (6.0 KB)
  from: http://nn.nnn.nn.nnn
Would you like to save this file?
-

Then performing the suggested workaround:

$ a2disconf serve-cgi-bin
Conf serve-cgi-bin disabled.
To activate the new configuration, you need to run:
  systemctl reload apache2
$ service apache2 restart

This brings up a BackupPC Server Status page.

In firefox, bringing up
"http://10.208.83.246/backuppc/index.cgi?action=summary; then works as
well.

[Bug 1836117] Re: Bionic update: upstream stable patchset 2019-07-10

2019-07-10 Thread Kamal Mostafa
** Description changed:

  SRU Justification

  Impact:
     The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
     in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
     demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
     by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
     a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
     stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

     upstream stable patchset 2019-07-10

-Ported from the following upstream stable releases:
-v4.14.71, v4.18.9,
-v4.14.72, v4.18.10
+    Ported from the following upstream stable releases:
+    v4.14.71, v4.18.9,
+    v4.14.72, v4.18.10
