[Bug 1841879] Re: Ubuntu crashed on install

2019-08-28 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I note

disk-by\x2dpartlabel-Microsoft\x5cx20reserved\x5cx20partition.device
appeared twice with different sysfs paths
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:17.0/ata2/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0/block/sdb/sdb3
and
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:17.0/ata1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda/sda3

Have you cloned one disk to another? but not changed the UUIDs?

A quick glance makes it look to me like you have created a condition
that should NOT exist and this is a warning of problems down the road.

[Bug 1841868] Re: Upgrade fails on systems with ubuntu-minimal package

2019-08-28 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu 18.10 (cosmic) reached end-of-life on July 18, 2019.

See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Further there are many unofficial PPA's and no doubt unofficial
packages, which should be removed prior to upgrade
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CleanUpgrade).  These should be
removed as per the error message you should have received (with
suggestion to ppa-purge them).

Was your 18.10 system(s) fully upgraded before you attempted release-
upgrade? If you'd like to remove the unofficial packages, and re-try
and still have the problem - you can return the Status of the bug back
to "New" when you comment the results of what you found. However given
that 18.10 is now EOL and unsupported, unless it impacts the 19.04 to
19.10 upgrade path it may be marked "Won't fix".

[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display

2019-08-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think the problem here is that gnome-shell detects the lid is closed
already and treats that like you just closed the lid immediately on
login.

I have heard about this kind of problem before and am not sure if it's
already been fixed in later versions.

2019-08-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
We find a large number of bugs are caused by extensions and you have a
few installed:

'gsconn...@andyholmes.github.io'
'openweather-extens...@jenslody.de'
'sound-output-device-choo...@kgshank.net'
'move_cl...@rmy.pobox.com'
'gnom...@panacier.gmail.com'
'arc-m...@linxgem33.com'
'sensory-percept...@harlemsquirrel.github.io'
'temperature@xtranophilist'

Please try uninstalling all of them (don't just disable them), and then
tell us if the bug still occurs.

I installed Ubuntu originally with a server iso in order to have a
custom LVM configuration, then I installed the `ubuntu-desktop` package.
This is my laptop but I did the same thing on my desktop and encountered
the same issue with this upgrade from Cosmic to Disco. That upgrade was
rough. It got stuck so I did a force shutdown and several rounds of
`sudo apt -f install`, `sudo apt dist-upgrade` and reboot.

[Bug 1841679] Re: Let GDM timeout and it changes to a blank screen where there is no way to recover

2019-08-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If you know how to log in remotely via SSH then please:

0. Install package 'openssh-server'.

1. Reboot.

2. Log in via ssh from another machine.

3. Write down the PID of the gnome-shell process (that's the login
screen GUI).

4. Leave the machine so it times out and the screen blanks. Make sure
you can't wake it.

5. Run from ssh:

   apport-cli --hanging -P `pidof gnome-shell`

   That should create a new bug report. Tell us the bug ID.

6. If step 5 failed then please check if there is still a gnome-shell
process at all. If so then go to step 7. If not, then stop here.

7. Run from ssh:

   sudo killall -ABRT gnome-shell

8. Follow these steps:

[Bug 1831369] Re: Gnome Shell pauses and stutters when under heavy load

2019-08-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please be careful to only discuss one problem per bug report. If you're
experiencing multiple problems then please open separate bugs for them.

Continuing with this bug...

I suspect the problem here is that disk IO is directly affecting
animations. They shouldn't normally be related to each other, but one
way that can happen is if gnome-shell is blocked in writing a log
message. It can become blocked if there are regular log messages being
written, and then every 5 seconds the kernel will block in order to
flush to disk.

Please run this command in a Terminal window:

  journalctl -f

Now reproduce the problem again and please tell us if the Terminal
window shows NEW log messages while the freeze/stutter is happening.

I confirm that latest bios fixes the problem on 5.0.0-25 using rtw88. So
the whole time it was related to the ACPI IVRS bug. I wonder how many of
these little model-specific quirk work-arounds are sitting in the
various kernel drivers.

I'm using it on debian's testing... I will report back which bugs I
see (I may have triggered one yesterday, but I actually don't remember
which bug I filed way back then).

[Bug 1776632] Re: rkhunter ASCII text with no line terminators

2019-08-28 Thread Benjamin Tegge via ubuntu-bugs
It looks like there is an option to suppress this. I just encountered
the same problem and found information in the following tickets to be
helpful:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rkhunter/+bug/1453952
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rkhunter/+bug/219840

I created a /etc/rkhunter.conf.local with the following content:

```
ALLOWHIDDENDIR=/dev/shm/byobu-*-/.last.tmux
ALLOWDEVFILE=/dev/shm/byobu-*-/.last.tmux/*
ALLOWDEVFILE=/dev/shm/byobu-*-/*/*
ALLOWDEVFILE=/dev/shm/byobu-*-/*
ALLOWDEVFILE=/dev/shm/sem.*
```

I don't think the is a bug, you are basically asking how to configure
your whitelist. It would have been more constructive an useful to the
community to post it as a question on AskUbuntu. I think.

Autopkgtest failing once on amd64 which is strange, since it passed in Bileto
and there were no related changes:

I reran it and it should just be flaky or unrelated to systemd.

[Bug 1837886] Re: kpatch 0.5.0-0ubuntu2 ADT test failure with linux 5.3.0-0.1

2019-08-28 Thread Ben Romer
Currently, Ubuntu uses the livepatch interface built into our kernels
since 4.15.0. The kpatch interface is an older method for doing in-place
patching that predates livepatch, but is included in our 4.4 kernels, so
our livepatch users do not need or use the DKMS module on any of our
kernels.

According to the upstream issue tracker for kpatch, the specific problem
here is:

"tglx renovated the stack trace code for 5.2 (see patchset in lkml
archive), changing struct stack_trace and its related APIs.

Sooner or later we're going to deprecate the kpatch core module since
its functionality can be provided by the kernel livepatch API. But in
case anyone wants to continue to using it with newer kernels, consider
this a heads up that work will be required to build it for 5.2."

https://github.com/dynup/kpatch/issues/966

 Since upstream is intending to deprecate the code and we don't use it,
I think it would make the most sense to remove the kpatch-dkms package,
and the test that failed, for eoan.

I tried physically removing the 4G modem card from inside the laptop,

the time when the suspend fails.

Removing the 4G modem card causes suspend to work properly.

[Bug 1841841] [NEW] disk stress test extremely slow progress after cpu offline/online

2019-08-28 Thread Paul Larson
Public bug reported:

One of the test systems we use for testing snap updates is:
Dell Inspiron 5759
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] - 1002:6660, Intel - 8086:1916

We picked this one, some time ago from a pool of hardware to use for one
of the test systems to test amd64/i386 snaps in beta. One of the tests
in the test suite does some disk stress testing using:

   bonnie++ -d /var/lib/snapd/hostfs/writable -u root -r 8000

Looking back through our results, I see that it has often taken from
20-40 min. to complete the test, and sometimes hit our timeout
threshold. More recently, it seems to always just timeout, but as far
back as our history goes with testing on this platform, it's always
seemed bad to some extent. I tried the exact same test on another
similar system, and it completed in only 11min. so we suspected a bad
disk. After replacing the disk with a new one, it still has the same
problem.

We only see this problem on the core18 i386 images though, not on
core16, and not on core18-amd64.

Looking into it some more, I discovered that it was easily reproducible outside
the test suite, but *only* if I tried running it after the full test suite
without rebooting. If I reboot the system, and run the bonnie++ command above
without the rest of the tests, it completes in about 13 min.
I divided up the other tests and narrowed it down to a cpu offlining test -
when that test runs, followed by this disk stress test, that's when it gets so
horribly slow.

This was all done using checkbox-snappy as the test suite, but if you
have another way to get bonnie++ on here, it can be reproduced without
it (or you can use bonnie++ from checkbox-snappy easily by doing 'sudo
/snap/bin/checkbox-snappy.shell')

Here's the basic instructions to reproduce (on core18-i386):
$ sudo bash -c "echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online"
$ sudo bash -c "echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu2/online"
$ sudo bash -c "echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/online"
$ sudo bash -c "echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online"
$ sudo bash -c "echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu2/online"
$ sudo bash -c "echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/online"
$ sudo /snap/bin/checkbox-snappy.shell
# bonnie++ -d /var/lib/snapd/hostfs/writable -u root -r 8000

Nothing particularly interesting in dmesg during all of this other than the
NOHZ messages during cpu offline:
[ 189.085026] smpboot: CPU 1 is now offline
[ 199.371529] smpboot: CPU 2 is now offline

4.15.0-55.60-246 - passed after some timeouts/retries, took 41m though
4.15.0-55.60-253 - passed in 20min
4.15.0-56.62-263 - fails - seems to take much much longer from this point on

*These results were from that test as part of the full test run,
including the cpu offlining test. When the test is run by itself on the
same system, it takes only around 13min

[Bug 1841070] Re: S3 sleep/suspend fails with Linux 4.15.0-58-generic

2019-08-28 Thread Patrick Wigmore
> This probably means linux-modules-extra isn't installed.
You're quite right, it wasn't installed. After installing it, the graphical
glitches go away, and the WiFi works. The sleep issue remains, in both -56 and
-57.
