Thank you very much.

I applied the test kernel to 3 of our production systems (since there's no
way to trigger either bug artificially). I know I shouldn't but I'm willing
to take the heat for problems arising from doing that.

I'll write you as soon as there's a hint of a problem on these machines.

Best,

Frank

Typically those outlook.office365.com accounts don't have IMAP enabled,
so you need to use an add-on to connect via their Exchange protocol.

In TB 60.9 we've made this more discoverable: https://www-

[Bug 1847566] [NEW] Login is slower the older the session

2019-10-09 Thread guus
Public bug reported:

Login takes several seconds after a session is a day old. Initially it is fast.
Closing all programs and locking/login doesn't help.
Logout/login DOES help.
It feels as if the time is related to the maximum RAM used.

Output of journalctl -b around the time of login:

exit 0

exec dpkg-statoverride --update --add root root 0644 "/boot/vmlinuz-${version}"

[Bug 1846371]

2019-10-09 Thread Gandalf-aviary
Yeah, one of the main themes of bug 1462839 is to handle missing
resources. The Crux is to find a sweet spot between loading "missing"
contexts and skipping "mostly ok" ones.

I hope someone will tackle that soon since it hinders us.

Thank you Dave for putting works to solve this bug!

[Bug 1846371]

2019-10-09 Thread Dtownsend
So the main problem here is that as things stand synchronously loading
ftl files from langpacks fail. Synchronous loads use
[`Cu.readUTF8URI`](https://searchfox.org/mozilla-
central/rev/05a22d864814cb1e4352faa4004e1f975c7d2eb9/intl/l10n/L10nRegistry.jsm#754)
which underneath uses the `URLPreloader` which [only supports file or
omnijar urls](https://searchfox.org/mozilla-
central/rev/05a22d864814cb1e4352faa4004e1f975c7d2eb9/js/xpconnect/loader/URLPreloader.cpp#565).
So attempting to load strings for browser.xhtml which uses synchronous
localization fails for the langpack and so falls back to the built-in
localization (yay for fallback!).

Unfortunately we cache these load failures which effectively poison the
langpack for future localization passes. In particular we cache the fact
that `branding/brand.ftl` isn't available in the langpack and then any
attempt to generate bundles that include `branding/brand.ftl` as a
resource (which the majority of pages do) fail because that file is
cached as missing. That seems like a different bug, I had the impression
that fluent would fall back on a per-resource level, not ignore the
entire locale if just one resource is missing, but we don't need to
solve that to fix this.

There are a couple of ways to solve this. Probably the ideal solution
would be to make the `URLPreloader` support loading out of langpacks.
But for a safer patch for beta I've just made `loadSync` fallback to an
alternative method of loading the ftl file in the event that
`Cu.readUTF8URI` fails.

I fixed this in grub recently, although only for multipath, not other uses
of device mapper. grub-mkconfig and whatever makes fstab files should be
consistent I guess...

[Bug 1845571] Re: ubiquity offers installation media as an install target

2019-10-09 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
** Description changed:

I guess this is actually a bug in some partman component, but well. In
both the desktop and ubuntu studio installers for eoan beta, I was
offered the installation media as a target disk. This seems unlikely to
  be correct.
+
+ ==
+
+ partman-auto must not use the _whole_ device, of anything that is
+ mounted on /cdrom.
+
+ Our ISOs are multipartition eltorito devices. And one can mount the top-
+ level device, or the first partition, to get the same content (depending
+ if one knows how to read partitions that is). Previously we were
+ mounting the top-level /dev/sda, but now we started to mount /dev/sda1,
+ unbreaking using other partitions of the installer media for purposes of
+ persistence & installer logs.
+
+ Partman & parted are actually very confused by our installer media, as
+ they get tricked by -isohybrid-apm-hfsplus into thinking it is MAC based
+ partition table, when in fact it's just MS-DOS or GPT depending how one
+ looks at it. At least blkid/udevadm correctly declare it el-torito
+ hybrid image.
+
+ Thus when parted init code tries to walk the partitions, and detect
+ installer media mounts none of that code actually runs, as no partitions
+ are detected partman (and parted_devices declares it unknown partition
+ table).
+
+ Hence I guess, the static strict check for the "whole $device mount on
+ /cdrom" was added.
+
+ But given the above change to mount just a partition this has now
+ started to fail. Imho we should expand the pattern to match at least
+ optionally match 'p?[0-9]*' - depending on how one re-rolls the iso, it
+ may or may not be multipartition one, with optionally 'p'-prefixed
+ (hello nvme) partition number, such that all of these cases are valid.

[Bug 1809407] Re: [nvidia] Corrupted wallpaper after resuming from suspend or hibernation

2019-10-09 Thread Shane Synan
I've had this issue in the past on Ubuntu 18.04 with the NVidia 340.x
driver series. Two days ago with driver 340.107 and the latest released
system updates, the lockscreen wallpaper corrupted for about 2 seconds
on resume from suspend, then the wallpaper reloaded, appearing fine. In
the past, the lockscreen wallpaper would remain corrupted for at least a
minute (presumably indefinitely, but I didn't wait to find out).

This issue might be somehow fixed, but I'll keep a look out to see if it
happens again and stays corrupted for longer than a minute.

2019-10-09 Thread Jason Gambrel
Thank you very much for the direction. This will be helpful when I
report any future bugs. I hadn't had time to look at this till today.
I decided to try and reproduce the bug to generate a new crash file, but
have been unable to reproduce it. One of the updates from the past few
days must have solved it.

Thank you.

Re: [Bug 1846424] Re: 19.10 ZFS Update failed on 2019-10-02

2019-10-09 Thread BertN45
I will read it a few times more, because it is complex. In the past I
booted from ext4 and I had stored all my ~15 Virtual Machines in vms/vms
(and on the desktop I have vms/kvm too). I was pleased with the
instantaneous response times in the VMs, because the Linux VMs did
almost completely run from L1ARC. So when I decided to boot from ZFS, I
decided to use the VMS datapool to avoid repartitioning the disk. That
vms datapool was already at the begin of the 1TB SSHD. That worked fine,
also when moving the disks from Phenom to Ryzen and during the upgrade
from 18.04 to 19.04 to 19.10. The first problem has been the update of
ZFS itself, which I start to understand now.

By the way today I did run into the same problems again. I did run a VM
on my desktop with Ubuntu 19.10 using ext4. After the release of the new
installer, I installed Ubuntu on ZFS on a seconds disk sdb. Despite a
minor problem it worked fine. I had a nice dual boot. Again till today
on my sda-ext4 installation, when zfsutils-linux was updated, the update
failed again in the that mount. It seems bpool or rpool also cause
problems in such a dual boot with ext4. The bypass is simple this time,
I remove sdb during the update process

However I think, it is strange to use something like "zfs mount -a" in
the update process itself, the system to be updated is already mounted.
Besides it makes the update process vulnerable.

Thank you for the explanation, that I will read again.

Hm, I wonder, if this is now the same issue as seen on ppc64le subiquity

`mac' and doesn't deal with it via partman which shows no partitions for
the device. and the state directory for it has no partitions.

[Bug 1845571] Re: ubiquity offers installation media as an install target

2019-10-09 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Reading a bit more code

ubiquity has partman/check.d/partition_too_small which does read
/cdrom/casper/filesystem.size (which is 5GiB) and should actually
prevent from successfully contining to install on the installation
media.

Also there is d-i/source/partman-auto/lib/auto-shared.sh
get_auto_disks() which should be skipping /cdrom , ie.

# Skip devices containing the installation medium
[ -e "$dev/installation_medium" ] && continue

# Skip installer disk
$(mount | grep -qF "$device on /cdrom ") && continue

So we need to check that those pieces are working correctly and that
devices smaller than 5GiB are never offered for installation *both* when
they are and are *not* installation media.

[Bug 1846424] Re: 19.10 ZFS Update failed on 2019-10-02

2019-10-09 Thread Richard Laager
You had a setup with multiple root filesystems which each had
canmount=on and mountpoint=/. So they both tried to automatically mount
at /. (When booting in the root-on-ZFS config, one was already mounted
as your root filesystem.) ZFS, unlike other Linux filesystems, refuses
to mount over non-empty directories. Thus, mounting over / fails. Thus
`zfs mount -a` would fail, which was the underlying command for zfs-
mount.service. As a result of the mount failing, you got into a state
where some datasets mounted, but not all of them. As a result of this,
you had empty directories for some mountpoints in the wrong filesystems.
As a result, those empty directories continued to break `zfs mount -a`.

In your case, it's likely that the relevant directory was /vms/vms. This
was preventing you from mounting the vms dataset at /vms. To be
absolutely clear, this was because /vms was non-empty, because it
contained /vms/vms.

You first fixed the underlying issue with the root filesystems by
setting canmount=noauto on both of them. That still left the second
problem. Once you `rmdir`ed the directory(ies) that were in the way,
mounting works correctly.

Separately from the issues above, it's best practice to NOT store anything in
the root dataset on a pool (the dataset with the same name as the pool, in this
case "vms"), because that dataset can never be renamed. If you're not actually
using the "vms" dataset itself, I suggest the following:
zfs unmount vms/vms
rmdir /vms/vms # this rmdir not required, but I like to cleanup completely
zfs unmount vms
zfs set canmount=off vms
zfs mount vms/vms

[Bug 1847548] Re: Update of zfs-linux fails

2019-10-09 Thread Richard Laager
The error is again related to something trying to mount at /. That means
you have something setup wrong. If it was setup properly, nothing should
be trying to _automatically_ (i.e. canmount=on) mount at /. (In a root-
on-ZFS setup, the root filesystem is canmount=noauto and mounted by the
initramfs, as this allows for multiple root filesystems e.g. for
rollbacks / multiple OSes.) Look at your mountpoints, figure out what
has mountpoint=/, and fix that one way or another.

Also, if zfs-mount.service is failing, you should be having that failure
on boot anyway. This isn't particularly related to the update process.

[Bug 1845571] Re: ubiquity offers installation media as an install target

2019-10-09 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
For the dell usecase, the expection is to "use free" or "wipe Ubuntu FOO
and reinstall", meaning that only free space is used or an existing
Ubuntu partition is wiped & reinstalled.

Meaning that the full device /dev/sdb (the install media) is not offered
for install target.

The only time we do support wiping and installing ont hte full /dev/sdb
which we booted from, is when casper was booted with toram option. In
which case yes, it's expected to wipe the disk one booted from.

[Bug 1847548] [NEW] Update of zfs-linux fails

2019-10-09 Thread BertN45
Public bug reported:

I have often problems with zfsutils-linux updates. I have in a Virtualbox VM a
dual boot from two disks,
- one from ext4 (sda), the one with the failing update and
- another one from zfs (sdb).

The whole update process is far from robust, any fly on the road causes a car
crash.
Why do datapools, that have nothing to do with the update itself, influence the
update.

Last week another update failed because there were somewhere apparently empty
directories.
Please avoid the dependencies on the whole zfs-world, if I want to update 2 or
3 packages in an ext4 system.

The attachment show a re-update try-out, forced through the apt remove of a
non-existing package. It contains:
- the second failed update
- zpool status, that show your new rpool of your standard zfs boot, installed
yesterday

[Bug 1847377] Re: snmptrapd.service uses MIBSDIRS instead of MIBDIRS

2019-10-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Yes, it does appear to be a typo, you're right. Grepping the source
tree shows "MIBSDIR" only appears in ./debian/snmptrapd.service and
./debian/snmpd.service, whereas "MIBDIRS" shows up 144 times in the main
source tree.

The issue appears to be present in both bionic (5.7.3+dfsg-1.8ubuntu3)
and eoan (5.7.3+dfsg-5ubuntu5). Looks like it should probably also
affect xenial and disco.

I notice, however, that none of these mibs directories actually exist,
at least not with just snmptrapd installed (are there any packages that
install mibs to any of these dirs?) The service itself seems to
function identically with the typo'd env var and with the fixed one.
I.e.:

$ sudo apt-get install -y snmptrapd
$ service snmptrapd status

[Bug 1847339] Re: Polkit asking for password repeatedly when installing

2019-10-09 Thread Andrew Hayzen
OK, as this is related to running in non-local sessions, I'm not sure
how common this use case is.

It also appears that the issue happens on other non-debian distros (eg Fedora
here https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/issues/3001 ) and that upstream state
that "When running via ssh, you are missing out on both subject.local and
auth_active, so polkit ends up asking every time.
Install a local rule if operating via ssh is important to you..." which
suggests they wouldn't accept such a change in any upstream polkit definitions.

The pkla file I believe comes from debian when the package is imported
into ubuntu (
https://salsa.debian.org/debian/flatpak/blob/debian/master/debian/org.freedesktop.Flatpak.pkla
). If this issue is important to you I would suggest reporting a bug
against the debian flatpak package asking for non-local session support,
if this is accepted then the fix will be pulled into Ubuntu when it is
imported. Or if any traction can be made upstream in their definitions
these will be pulled in later releases of flatpak. (and if either happen
backports can be discussed)

Until either of those have a something actionable (to allow or not allow
non-local session by default) I am going to mark this bug as "opinion",
as I don't want to carry any diff to debian and upstream but acknowledge
it as a discussion point.

Also I've finally found a friend willing to test it for me. He runs

how much this helps though as mine was also working before. Sorry I
can't find other Ubuntu/firefox user friends who speak the language and

[Bug 1847263] Re: multipath installations generate incorrect fstab

2019-10-09 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
And given that we have identical stock VG and LV names across all
installations, imho for LVM we might want to start using by-id symlink
names in /etc/fstab too, which encode unique UUID of the VG/LV or some
such.

Effectively, using UUIDs of the DM devices, for the same reasons we use
UUIDs of the filesystems for simple block devices.

I.e. UUID-harder, never less =)

[Bug 1845571] Re: ubiquity offers installation media as an install target

2019-10-09 Thread Brian Murray
For the record this happens when choosing use "Erase disk and install
Ubuntu", not in an advanced partitioning screen. Attached you'll find a
screenshot of issue with the install media as the default destination.
Although it might be because I used the following "kvm -m 4096 -boot d
-hda /misc/isos/ubuntu/eoan-desktop-amd64.iso -hdb /srv/vms/eoan.qemu".

[Bug 1834566] Re: Samsung Notebook 9 Pro - Internal Speaker Playback problem - HDA Intel - Realtek ALC298

2019-10-09 Thread Jason Gralinski
Same issue on Ubuntu 18.04 and 19.04.

I tested multiple Arch distros as well and ran into the same issue.

Sound through headphones and internal speakers is absent, USBC to
Headphone does work.
