[Bug 1842954] Re: AMD GPU hang/crash/black screen after suspend(ing)

2019-11-17 Thread Russell Smith
I'm also experiencing this problem after upgrading to Ubuntu 19.10. I'm
using xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu 19.0.1-1ubuntu1 so either it's not
completely fixed, or I'm experiencing a different but very similar
issue.

One of the linked bug reports suggested the crash occurs in the XFCE
compositor. I tried disabling the compositor:

xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing -s false

This seems to be a usable workaround for now, though it does introduce
some visual glitches.

--

More detail:

After booting to login screen, if I select an "XFCE" or "Xubuntu"
session and log in, the system crashes to a black screen and is
unresponsive to Ctrl-Alt-F2 or Ctrl-Alt-Del or anything else I try.
(Alt+SysRq+b does reboot though.)

Selecting an "Ubuntu" session is fine.

After rebooting, I see 232 lines in syslog like this:

WARNING: CPU: 2 PID: 274 at
drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/../display/dc/dcn10/dcn10_hw_sequencer.c:932

@ C.S.Cameron,

Yes, I think it is enough with a single test. Please tell us the result
of your test when usb-pack-efi is selected in the settings menu of
mkusb. Will it make a difference in order to make it possible to boot
into an iso file?

[Bug 1846148] Re: Realtek ALC256M with DTS Audio Processing internal microphone doesn't work on Redmi Book 14 2019

2019-11-17 Thread Lilian Tao
uname -a
Linux lilian-dev 5.0.0-37-generic #41+redmiv2 SMP Mon Nov 18 05:09:35 UTC 2019
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

1. installed as the order below:
  789 sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-5.0.0-37_5.0.0-37.41+redmiv2_all.deb
  790 sudo dpkg -i
linux-headers-5.0.0-37-generic_5.0.0-37.41+redmiv2_amd64.deb
  792 sudo dpkg -i linux-modules-5.0.0-37-generic_5.0.0-37.41+redmiv2_amd64.deb

2. restart and boot to the test kernel.

3. Open settings and find Input tag from Sound.
- The internal mic was not visible

3. insert the external mic
- It appears as "Microphone - BuiltinAudio"
- unplug it, still appears as "Microphone - BuiltinAudio"

4. Test recording for no external mic case:
- no sound at all.
- no change even change the input sound level to max in settings

5. Test recording for external mic case
- no sound at all.
- no change even change the input sound level to max in settings

[Bug 1852966] Re: pivot_root01 from ubuntu_ltp_syscalls failed on D-Oracle-5.0

2019-11-17 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
** Description changed:

This issue can be reproduced with 5.0.0-1008.13-oracle, and the manually

However, with the 5.0.0-1005.9-oracle regression testing report, this
test was not failing by then, so it looks like a test case issue to me.

[Bug 1842037] Re: SUNRPC: Use after free when GSSD credentials are invalid causes oops

2019-11-17 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hi Frank,

Thanks for testing the kernel in -proposed, it lets us mark the bug as
verified so the patches make it into the release, which will be
happening in about two weeks going by https://kernel.ubuntu.com/

Just to be clear, you tested the bionic-hwe kernel 5.0.0-37~18.04.1 from
bionic -proposed?

I have updated the tag, which in the future, can be done by clicking the
pencil icon at the Tags: section, at the end of the summary at the top
of the page, right before the first comment.

Thanks again for reporting the bugs and helping us test. There is
nothing more to do now but wait for the SRU complete. The kernel will be
released somewhere around the 2nd of December, give or take a few days
in case any CVEs turn up.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Bug 1850766] Re: Bluetooth headset selected as default sound output, yet sound outputs to laptop speakers

2019-11-17 Thread Pierre Equoy
I ran the following steps:

1. Power laptop on with bluetooth turned off
2. Turn BT on in gnome settings and set my BT headphones in pairing mode
3. Pair the headphones.
4. In Sound settings, it looks like the selected device is the BT headphones,
but if I play something it outputs on the laptop speakers.

output of `pactl list` gives something interesting though:

This matches what I have, but not what I see in Sound settings.

5. Now, if I select the speakers as the output device in the sound
settings, then back to BT device, the sound is correctly output to the
BT headphones (and not the laptop speakers), and I see this in `pactl
list`:

[Bug 1847361] Re: Upgrade of qemu binaries causes running instances not able to dynamically load modules

2019-11-17 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Yeah, the workaround can be a disk that "fails" which helps to be not
guest detectable:

Check libs before the workaround:
$ sudo lsof -p 9952 | awk '{print $9}' | grep '\.so' | sort | uniq > pre.libs

Then attach a XML that is valid for libvirt, but will fail to attach a disk
(after loading the .so files)

You'll get a fail (intentionally) like:
$ virsh attach-device guest1 non-disk.xml
error: Failed to attach device from on-disk.xml
error: internal error: unable to execute QEMU command 'device_add': Property
'virtio-blk-device.drive' can't find value 'drive-virtio-disk2'

Check after this:
$ sudo lsof -p 9952 | awk '{print $9}' | grep '\.so' | sort | uniq > post.libs

And we see all of them loaded:
$ diff -Naur pre.libs post.libs | grep '^+'

** Description changed:

  --- initial report ---

Upgrading qemu binaries causes the on-disk versions to change, but the
in-memory running instances still attempt to dynamically load a library
which matches its same version. This can cause running instances to fail
actions like hotplugging devices. This can be alleviated by migrating
the instance to a new host or restarting the instance, however in cloud
type environments there may be instances that cannot be migrated (sriov,
etc) or the cloud operator does not have permission to reboot.

This may be resolvable for many situations by changing the packaging to
keep older versions of qemu libraries around on disk (similar to how the
kernel package keeps older kernel versions around).

  --- testcase ---

  $ apt install uvtool-libvirt
  $ uvt-simplestreams-libvirt --verbose sync --source

In the log we can see:
  Failed to initialize module: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qemu/block-curl.so
Note: only modules from the same build can be loaded.

  --- solution options (WIP) ---

For a packaging solution we would need:
  - qemu-block-extra / qemu-system-gui binary packages would need
- sort of a -$buildid in the name. That could be the version
- string (sanitized for package name)
+   sort of a -$buildid in the name. That could be the version
+   string (sanitized for package name)
  - /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qemu/*.so would need a -$buildid
  - loading of modules from qemu would need to consider $buildid
- when creating module names.
- util/module.c in module_load_one / module_load_file
- It already searches in multiple dirs, maybe it could insert
- the $buildid there
+   when creating module names.
+   util/module.c in module_load_one / module_load_file
+   It already searches in multiple dirs, maybe it could insert
+   the $buildid there
  - We'd need a way of detecting running versions of qemu binaries
- and only make them uninstallable once the binaries are all
- gone. I have not seen something like that in apt yet (kernel
- is easy in comparison as only one can be loaded at a time).

thank you very much. I managed to install the proposed kernel on several
machines and had a lot of users testing them successfully. However, I can't
find a way to add a tag to a bug. Same goes for bug 1828978 which is fixed
in the same kernel.

Best,

Frank

[Bug 1847361] Re: Upgrade of qemu binaries causes running instances not able to dynamically load modules

2019-11-17 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
If "restricting features after upgrade" is not an option until we came up
upstream with a preferred approach to fix this the workarounds are:
- migrate away and back for upgrades (general practice, but sometimes
impossible e.g. due to passthrough)
- the .so by using the functionality before upgrade (e.g. attach and detach a
rbd device).
I guess there could even be a valid config but invalid target which would
achieve the same
  without the guest noticing.

@GrzesiekC, can you check for apparmor denials when running thunderbird?
I.e. have a terminal running "journalctl -f | grep DEN", and share the
output here.

Do you have an apparmor profile being enforced for thunderbird? I.e.
what is the output of:

sudo apparmor_status | grep thunderbird

1. installed as the order below:
sudo dpkg -i linux-image-xxx.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-modules-.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-modules-extra-xxx.deb

2. restart and boot to the test kernel.

3. Open settings and find Input tag from Sound.
- The internal mic was not visible

3. insert the external mic
- It appears as "Microphone - BuiltinAudio"
- unplug it, still appears as "Microphone - BuiltinAudio"

4. Test recording for no external mic case:
- Only random electric noise.

[Bug 1846148] Re: Realtek ALC256M with DTS Audio Processing internal microphone doesn't work on Redmi Book 14 2019

2019-11-17 Thread Hui Wang
Please install and test this kernel, at least you could see the internal
mic, and maybe the internal mic can work.

https://people.canonical.com/~hwang4/redmi/v1/

And please also test the external mic.

If they don't work as expected, please collect an alsa-info.txt with
coeff enabled.

sudo su
echo 1 > /sys/module/snd_hda_codec/parameters/dump_coef
Then run alsa-info to collect alsa-info.txt.

thx.

[Bug 1852510] Re: IO errors when writing large amounts of data to USB storage in eoan on RPI

2019-11-17 Thread Hui Wang
I tested the patch myself (arm64 and armhf kernels on different Pi
boards), it worked well. With this patch, the usb_owg could work well
even with HIGHMEM and VMSPLIT_3G enabled, so far we still could use a
single armhf kernel for Pi2/3/4 boards.

The testing kernel is at:
https://people.canonical.com/~hwang4/dwcotg/

And I also posted my patch to comment #22 of
https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/3332

[Bug 1852956] [NEW] Should be an easier way to unmark one in each group

2019-11-17 Thread Endolith
Public bug reported:

To do the same thing:

Using AllDup on Windows:

1. Run byte-by-byte duplicate checker on some folders
2. It finds lots of duplicates
3. Right-click one of them and click "Select all files inside the folder
structure of this file", press Ok
4. Press Delete button
5. Make sure "Don't process any groups with all files selected" is checked
6. It deletes a bunch of files while leaving alone any groups that have all
files selected, or that have no files selected.

Then I can do things like

7. Reverse file selection
8. Remove all groups with all files selected (the ones that don't have any file
in the folder of interest
9. Select all files except the oldest file (which selects all but one in each
group)
10. Delete

Using fslint on Ubuntu:

1. I run the duplicate file checker on some folders
2. It finds lots of duplicates
3. I right-click one of them and "Copy" (its path)
4. I right-click a gray bar and "Select using wildcard"
5. I paste the path
6. I remove most of the path, and add an asterisk to select everything in that
folder and its subfolders.
7. I press Delete
8. It asks "Are you sure you want to delete these 19786 items?"
9. I press Yes
10. It asks "Are you sure you want to delete all items in this group?"
11. I say No, and Ctrl+Click one of them to de-select it.
12. Return to step 7

But I have to return to Step 7 hundreds of times, so I can't
realistically do it this way.

Even if I want to delete all of them, I would either have to click Yes
hundreds of times for each group, or uncheck "ask me this in the future"
but I'm not sure I can get that prompt back after unchecking it?

I don't see any other software that performs these functions on Linux.
Is it possible to make it more flexible like AllDup?

[Bug 1852954] [NEW] After using iGVT-g guest and suspending system, GPU clock is locked at 100 MHz

2019-11-17 Thread Leonardo Müller
Public bug reported:

It was observed that after using an iGVT-g guest and suspending the
system, the GPU clock is locked to 100 MHz on wake up. Normally, the GPU
would idle at 300 MHz and go up to 1000 MHz when required, so the GPU
starts operating at only 1/3 of the normal idle clock and 1/10 of the
maximum clock.

A kernel WARNING appears on wake up, being something like:

[Bug 1770948] Re: Mouse cursor size is large and inconsistent on 4K displays in XFCE

2019-11-17 Thread Willy Nolan
Is this the same issue?

I have a 4k display and my laptop's builtin 1920x1080 display.

I have to use lightdm because my external monitor was not working with
GDM.

When I don't click on anything my cursor is large and white in color like this:
https://i.ibb.co/7zdLx51/cursor-big.png

When I click it gets smaller and turns black like this:
https://i.ibb.co/zGx025X/cursor-normal.png

This happens regardless of the screen I am using at the time.

[Bug 1852939] [NEW] Display fails to restore after Power Management prefs turn it off

2019-11-17 Thread Ian
Public bug reported:

1. Have Power Management preferences 'Put display to sleep when inactive
for..' to something other than 'never'.

2. Leave computer for longer than that.

3. Come back to find computer still running, but display will not resume
after pressing a key / moving the mouse.

Possibly related to playing video (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-435/+bug/1852570) because it doesn't happen every time, but has
happened at least four times since upgrading to Ubuntu MATE 19.10 with
this version of the graphics driver.

On the most recent occasion, syslog contains numerous lines like:

Nov 17 18:42:11 example org.mate.panel.applet.MateMenuAppletFactory[1267]:
[2737:2737:1117/184211.847879:ERROR:gles2_cmd_decoder.cc(5755)]
GLES2DecoderImpl::ResizeOffscreenFramebuffer failed because offscreen FBO was
incomplete.
Nov 17 18:42:11 example org.mate.panel.applet.MateMenuAppletFactory[1267]:

ContextResult::kFatalFailure: Could not allocate offscreen buffer storage.

.. repeated 'many' to 'several' times a second until I ssh'd in and
restarted it.

[Bug 1852936] [NEW] "Inappropriate audio coding" error when cdrecord attempts to use Audacity 16bit WAV files

2019-11-17 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

The 16-bit WAV files that Audacity exports are unsuitable for simply
creating a redbook CD. After exporting in format "WAV (Microsoft)
signed 16-bit PCM", the files are fed to "cdrecord", which then states
that the encoding is unusable.

If the files are non-compliant with the standard as written by
Microsoft, then this is a *bug*. If the files are compliant but
Audacity simply lacks the encoding capability to meet Redbook standards,
then please treat this as a *feature request*. FWIW, these are the
cdrecord-stated requirements for the Redbook standard:

"The file with data for this tracks should contain stereo, 16-bit
digital audio with 44100 samples/s. The byte order should be the
following: MSB left, LSB left, MSB right, LSB right, MSB left and so on.
The track should be a multiple of 2352 bytes."

*possible workaround*

Exporting as a custom ffmpeg pipe would perhaps work if someone knows
the exact settings. The codecs and other options are quite cryptic, so
I could not test this personally. If someone knows how to translate the
above-mentioned red book specs into settings in Audacity, please mention
it here. Thanks!

[Bug 1852837] Re: Ubuntu 19.10 boots into blinking underscore when manually restart, not even grub shows up!

2019-11-17 Thread Daniel
thanks for the tip, however, I'm getting blinking underscore right after bios
post!
not even grub shows up and nothing works!

I'm dual booting with windows 10 and if I restart from windows then
everything is fine and grub shows up! But restart from Ubuntu seems to
put the system in an unrecoverable state that even grub failes to start.

[Bug 1852935] [NEW] In Ubuntu Budgie, QT apps take a long time to open

2019-11-17 Thread metastork
Public bug reported:

Thought I'd post it here in case there's an obvious fix. In Ubuntu
budgie, QT apps such as VLC, VirtualBox and others take 20+ seconds (or
a long time) to open.

The issue is described here:
https://discourse.ubuntubudgie.org/t/slow-application-startup/2596/8
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1184774/some-applications-on-ubuntu-19-10-very-slow-to-start/1189599#1189599

It seems to be some issue with qt4 and qt5 library implementation in
Budgie (and possibly other Gnome based distros at the moment), as apt
purging 'qt5-gtk2-platformtheme' fixes the problem as described in the
Ubuntu Budgie discourse above (but it removes the GTK2 theming of QT
apps).

Adding an environment variable of:
export QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE=cleanlooks
also makes the QT apps start quickly but removes GTK theming (though,
strangely, if manually selecting the GTK2 theme option in the VLC preferences,
it works fine and VLC happily starts up fast, in (milli)seconds).

Using qt4-qtconfig or qt5ct packages does not seem to fix the problem,
in that the QT apps still start slowly, and those apps themselves also
take 20+ seconds to start.

[Bug 1849891] Re: Can not establish WIFI connection with Intel Wireless 7265 [8086:095a] subsystem id [8086:5110] after upgrade to Ubuntu 19.10

2019-11-17 Thread Bernhard Hayden
Since my upgrade today to 19.10 I am affected by the same bug, but with
different hardware

$ lspci -nnk | grep Network -A2
00:14.3 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Cannon Point-LP CNVi
[Wireless-AC] [8086:9df0] (rev 30)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Cannon Point-LP CNVi [Wireless-AC]
[8086:0034]
Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi

Tried backport-iwlwifi-dkms and the old kernel, none of which helped, so
I'm using the 11n_disable workaround as well for the time being.

[Bug 1811087] Re: [cosmic] lxd-tools replaced by lxd snap, which is missing 'fuidshift' binary

2019-11-17 Thread Harald Hetzner
Hm, I just figured out that I missed the last really useful comment
because I did not get an e-mail about it.

Anyway, https://github.com/lxc/lxc/issues/3186 now explains in more
detail how to quickly build fuidshift from source.

Thank you, Stéphane!

[Bug 1585332] Re: Graphical snaps don't honour the desktop theme

2019-11-17 Thread Ferry Toth
As a user I am experiencing 0 advantage from chromium packaged as a
snap. Except that it looks ugly.

Did I somehow miss the good stuff?

[Bug 1761377] Re: Installation fails when using an existing partition for /home : "ubi-usersetup failed with exit code 141" when installing (or upgrading to) 18.04 from USB

2019-11-17 Thread Kjetil Rydland
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1767799 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1767799

I had this issue and I also managed to solve it with (I think) pure luck.
I had an old LTS installed, and wanted to upgrade to 18.04. I decided to do a
clean install with a live-USB. I got this error but tried anyway. The
installation never finished and my system was broken. I recently tried again,
but this time I chose to NOT format / and I also didn't specify to use my old
/home as /home. The installation then went flawlessly and I had a working
18.04.3 installation.

However, I managed to install with a new username, not the one I had
been using. This meant I had no access to my old user files. I then
reinstalled again with the correct username, and again the install went
flawlessly. But I could not log in, I just got sent back to the login
prompt. I then installed ecryptfs-utils via tty, and log in now works
and my system is fine.

I'm not sure if this is helpful or related to this bug, but hopefully it
is.
